Create a guest bedroom that will spoil your visitors

Gracious hosting is all about making your guests feel comfortable. It’s also about making your home, their home, even if only for a short period of time. This is when some of those often-overlooked rooms come into focus – namely, the guest bedroom and bath. Follow these design tips to style these spaces as a cosy retreat your visitors will never want to leave!

Decorate with neutrals

If your goal is to make them comfortable, using a neutral colour palette of creams, whites and gentle greys will go a long way. Generally speaking, this family of hues is broadly appealing, which makes it a great choice for a guest bedroom, where one guest’s esthetic preferences and comfort level may differ dramatically from another’s.

Another reason neutral colours work well in a guest bedroom – or in any bedroom – is the atmosphere and ambience they lend to the space. Cool, calm and collected is the ultimate in guest room goals.

Finally, as we see colour trends fade in and out of style every year, a neutral colour scheme has

remained consistent. Going this route means you won’t have to redecorate any time soon.

Make it indulgent

Treat your guests to a little luxury for the duration of their stay. When it comes to extravagances, the best place to take your cues is from the hotel industry. WINTER CHEER FOR YOUR HOUSEPLANTS

With the days now noticeably shorter, we turn to our interior greenscapes to lift our spirits through the dark days of winter. While houseplant companions cheer up our homes, they too are feeling the effects of shorter days. Nobody understands this better than Darryl Cheng, author of The New Plant Parent. An engineer who has studied the relationship between houseplants and light, Cheng writes: “The impact of light cannot be overstated: No special fertilizer, distilled water or humidifiers will improve a houseplant in a poorly lit environment.”

Here are our top tips for ensuring the well-being of your cherished plants through the winter:

LIGHT

Light is the big one during this limited-daylight time of year. Placing your tropical plants in south-facing, unobstructed windows is ideal, but there is also nothing wrong with adding artificial light. However, take note: Cheng advises that many agricultural-grade grow lights are likely overkill. “Most of the tropicals people are growing as houseplants have a lower light demand than the high-yielding vegetable crops those lights are built for,” he writes. “If you have a regular white LED bulb, your plants will get enough spectrum at enough

intensity to survive.” Bear in mind this supplemental LED lighting is lower intensity than the sun, which can be compensated for with longer exposure — up to 12 hours a day won’t hurt — and with the efficiency of LED lights, there shouldn’t be too much cause for concern on your hydro bill.

LESS MOISTURE

The biggest cause for houseplant failure is too much love in the form of watering. Waterlogged potting soil will lead to root rot. If your plants are looking yellow or black and wilted, check to see if the soil is too wet by pushing your finger into the soil about three centimetres deep. Remove the dead foliage and repot into fresh, dry soil if necessary.

MORE MOISTURE

Many of the tropical plants we enjoy in our home are native to humid, rainforest-like environments – basically the opposite of our dry Canadian homes during the winter. Orchids, majesty palm, begonias, and Boston fern are some that will benefit from a daily misting with room temperature water in a fine spray bottle, generally when the soil starts to appear dry. Keep an eye out for brown or dry leaf tips. Important note: Succulents, fiddle leaf fig, and spider plants are among those that do not benefit from misting and can end up with the symptoms of overwatering when misted. The easiest way to decide whether to mist your houseplants or not is to consider where they came from. Those native to the

Mediterranean and Africa typically enjoy drier conditions than the lush tropical plants hailing from the rainforests of Southeast Asia and South America.

NEW YEAR DIET PROGRAM

Like many of us, the new year is a good time for indoor plants to cut back their food intake. Pay close attention — if there is new growth, continue fertilizing at a reduced rate. Most common houseplants slow down in the winter, so you can hold off fertilizing completely until early spring when you notice growth picking up again. In extreme cases, fertilizing in winter can turn soil salty and burn roots however, most often it is just a waste – the expensive fertilizer will end up flowing right through the soil.

Fill a cup with water and microwave on high for a few minutes. The steam will loosen any baked on food so you can easily wipe it clean.

These are germ incubators. Wash dish cloths regularly, and microwave damp sponges on high for several minutes to kill bacteria.

7 de-scale tHe kettle

Fill the kettle half-and-half with white vinegar and water and leave it to soak overnight. Using an old toothbrush, dislodge any stubborn bits of lime scale. Rinse out thoroughly a couple of times and then boil some water to eliminate any odour of vinegar.

8 tHe tootHbRusH

Use a toothbrush for hard-toreach areas in the bathroom and kitchen (for example, around the soap holder, taps and drain).

Located right next to downtown Winnipeg, running south to Fort Rouge, Osborne Village is a densely populated, well-traversed, artsy area of the city. With Wellington Crescent on one side and the Donald Street Bridge on the other, the urban residents are highly mobile, street savvy and aware of their surroundings.

The Village hosts fantastic funky shops, trendy nightclubs and unique restaurants known only on Osborne Street. If you’re looking for karaoke, you’re looking for Osborne. Osborne Village has an annual Canada Day Street Festival that features First Nations drumming, bands, an open market and street hockey.

Young, well-dressed business professionals enjoy their Starbucks in the sun next to street musicians and history students. On Osborne, trendy locals shift comfortably between quaint classic culture and dark court jesters. It’s an energizing mix to be in the midst of it. There is a marked difference between day traffic and

night walkers though. During the day, dads with strollers and cyclists swarm the streets. After business hours, groups of friends get together for food and wine or try performance art alone. Curiosity seekers are abundant and so are the amenities. The Village dances with lights riding the river.

Many new families call the Village home as well as some older tenants who enjoy their view from the highrise apartments, but most residents are typically young, single and working in the area. The most common age group is mid- to late20s, but there are urban professionals well above that who form a key demographic for services in the area. Families with children are typically affluent and educated with one or two children, sometimes living with other family units or singles in a grand three-storey house.

The face of the Village is young, metro and stunningly stylish. In this neighbourhood, public transit is the most frequent form of transportation down Osborne Street, after vehicle traffic. There are at least eight bus routes and the Rapid Transit station is located nearby. Parking is tight so people often walk, bike or bus in order to save a little bit of cash.

Osborne Village has more than 500 buildings – one-third is residential use. There are elementary schools and one middle school. The Village is close to the Misericordia Hospital and famous Firehall Station No. 4 sits on Stradbrook. The River Osborne Community Centre is further south at Confusion Corner.

Osborne Village is desirable and considered one of the best communities in the city. It is very vibrant and diverse with a thriving business and entertainment culture. People on the street both make and take away from the value of the Village.

SIX STEPS TO FINDING A GREAT RENTAL

Know your rental wants and needs before you start looking to simplify your search. CMHC offers some tips to help you find the right place to call “home.”

1. IDENTIFY YOUR RENTAL NEEDS: What’s your budget? Which neighbourhood do you prefer? How many bedrooms? Make a list of your needs and preferences to help narrow down that great rental opportunity.

2. ASK QUESTIONS: Have a list of questions ready to ask the landlord. Is parking included in the rent? Utilities? Ask about the lease and terms. Be clear on any policies that may affect your lifestyle.

3. FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT: Make a good impression when you meet the landlord. Dress neatly and arrive on time. Bring your rental history and references, a current employment letter, and a cheque so you can leave a deposit in case you’re interested in taking the place.

4. TAKE NOTES: If viewing several apartments, write down key features of each so you can compare later.

5. REVIEW YOUR LEASE: Rental agreements vary but generally include the names of the landlord and tenant, the address of the property, the amount of the rent, what is included in that cost, the rent payment due date, the deposit amount paid, the term of the

rental period, and details like who is responsible for upkeep. Ensure all this information is outlined.

6. TAKE NOTES – AGAIN: It’s time to move in! Before you do, you and your landlord should inspect your new home together. Document all issues so you won’t be held liable for any pre-existing damage when you leave.
