RESEARCH MOVERS BEFORE YOU HIRE
CHUCK RESNICK Hiring the right moving company can save you lots of work, stress and headaches. However, you’ll want to be careful that the company you hire is above board and upholds strict standards. How can you tell? Do your research. Is the company a member of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM)? You can also contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and your provincial government’s consumer protection agency.
You can also: Ask three movers for estimates in writing; get the terms and conditions of your move in writing; ensure you know how your goods will be protected for loss or damage. Does the company have a minimum charge, and how are you charged after that minimum is met? Will you be charged for fuel or travel time to and from their office to your home? Will there be a fuel surcharge or a stairs or longdistance walk charge if they have to park the truck some distance from your door? Is there a deposit required, and what kinds of payment options are available? Do they offer free quotes? How do they arrive at a valuation that is
covered by insurance? It’s best for everyone involved to have a moving contract that outlines what is expected. Read it and ask questions about anything you don’t understand. Hiring a company you can trust makes for a more comfortable, less stressful and successful move.

While many people idealize home ownership and cling to it as a goal, not everyone wants to own their own home. Especially after retirement, the “perks” of homeownership pale in comparison to the benefits of renting. If you’re thinking about making a change to your living situation, here are 10 good reasons why renting may be preferable to owning your home. 1. MOBILITY. If employment or other life circumstances require you to move to a different city (or province), it’s a lot easier to give your landlord notice and hunt for an apartment than it would be to put your home on the market, sell it and buy a new one. 2. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE.
Whether it’s shovelling snow for 90 days straight in winter, raking autumn leaves or mowing the lawn in summer, outdoor tasks are the responsibility of your landlord, superintendent or management company, unless your lease dictates otherwise. 3. FIXTURE REPAIR. When your shower stops running properly, your landlord is the one who has to call and pay for the plumber. If the fridge or stove needs replacing, that’s their financial responsibility. 4. INTEREST RATE INVULNERABILITY. Unlike
homeowners, your rent is fixed and can only increase by small increments dictated by law. Not so the financial market, which could see you renegotiating 24 Renters Guide | April 23–May 7, 2021
your mortgage every couple of years as interest rates and property values change. 5. ACCESS TO AMENITIES. Pools, gyms, party rooms and libraries are all fairly common features of upscale modern apartment buildings. In addition, highdensity housing is often situated in the heart of the city, close to entertainment and shopping, which opens up a world of possibilities for your social life. 6. NO DOWN PAYMENT. All you have to come up with to secure your apartment is enough to cover your rent and/or security deposit. Some landlords may ask for a security deposit rather than the last month, but it will usually end up being applied that way – at any rate, deposits aren’t excessive. With the average home price in Canada now well over $400k, even a very small down payment plus legal fees, plus home inspection, plus, plus, plus – it all adds up to a big investment and a lot of money to pay out on key day. 7. SAFETY. Living in a rental unit typically means living near a lot of other people, and while that can occasionally be irksome, those country music fans who hold a stomping hootenanny every Saturday night are also going to hear you scream if you’re in trouble, or notice if your car hasn’t moved or your mail starts piling up. 8. CHEAPER INSURANCE.
Unlike homeowners, renters do not have to insure the property – only the contents. When you get your renters’ insurance, expect to be paying

approximately half of what you would if you owned your home. Canadian renters’ insurance averages $20 to $30 a month in most parts of the country. 9. NO PROPERTY TAXES. While you can assume that at least some of the rent you pay goes towards covering that cost for your landlord, it isn’t your financial responsibility. Your rent remains stable and increases in a predictable fashion. 10. LOWER UTILITY COSTS.
Heating (or cooling) a larger space than that which you actually occupy is one of the downsides of homeownership. Rental units have more compact floorplans, and in the winter, you may even benefit from ambient heat from the building or apartments around you, depending on its layout. With Real estate prices rising, families are getting creative and moving into smaller spaces closer to the core. Apartments were once seen as a place for the young, or those who couldn’t buy, but now it’s a welcome and affordable lifestyle choice and more people are opting for urban convenience, smaller spaces they can call “home.” Going compact can be daunting for some, says Marie Potter, marketing director for Professional Organizers in Canada. “One way to approach small space living is to enjoy the benefits. Simply put, less space means less things, less mess, less stress and more time.” TIPS TO TRANSITION INTO A COMPACT HOME:
Office If you need a home office (or at least a workspace), it’s essential to have a filing system versus a piling system. Invest in a decent, compact filing cabinet on wheels that tucks under the desk. You’ll have every file at your fingertips if you set it up with hanging file folders and tabs in alphabetical order. If you don’t have a desk, use floating shelves and magazine holders, or a wall organizer to manage papers vertically. Stack and label clear bins with supplies on a shelf. baskets that hold fruit or other kitchen essentials. In very small spaces, install a wall-mounted table that folds down when you need it, and folds up and away when the meal is over. Open shelves will create the illusion of more space. Also consider items on wheels – they are easier to move around if necessary. Living space It’s best to keep things light and airy. Use limited colour palettes, plain white or mirrors to create the illusion of space. Seek multipurpose furniture such as an ottoman that can be used as an all-in-one foot rest, table and storage unit. Bathroom Hang a clear shower curtain or use a clear liner with mesh pockets behind it to store your bathroom necessities. Install a towel rack at the back of the tub, like you see in hotels. Have plenty of hooks to keep clothes off the floor. Stack clear, labelled bins under the sink for added storage. Bedroom Condo beds are all the rage for good reason: The mattress platform lifts up using pressurized pistons, so you can store and easily access belongings inside it. Otherwise, use under-the-bed bins for seasonal storage. Only have one set of sheets and towels, and just stay on top of laundry. Over-the-door hooks and a shoe organizer are a must. Thin design flock hangers create 30 per cent more space than plastic or wood hangers. If the bedroom is really
tiny, consider using curtains instead of bi-fold closet doors, or simply remove the closet doors for an open-concept closet. Here are some strategies to help you keep your home safe and sound. • Make sure your electrical outlets are covered. There are many kinds of outlet covers – choose the one that is right for you. • Confirm that you have reliable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure that the batteries are working. • Use doorknob covers on doors to non-childproofed areas (like the bathrooms and laundry room). Baby gates are also an effective solution for keeping kids in or out of a room.
• Don’t use toys or pillows in the crib, especially with young babies — your baby could suffocate. Never use an electric blanket for a child (could cause a fire). • Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub. Drowning can occur in seconds, and mere inches of water pose a risk. • Make sure your bathtub has a non-skid mat or pads to avoid slips. You can use a baby tub inside the bathtub — one with baby slings are especially helpful with infants. • Lock up all medications, alcoholic beverages, chemicals and cleaning products. Make sure matches and lighters are out
of reach. Use cabinet locks to secure these items. • Make sure cords for blinds are not tied together at the bottom (this is a strangulation hazard). • Make sure knives and sharp items are in an area where kids can’t access them. • Check toys for broken parts/ bits that are a choking hazard or sharp. Keep small toys for older children (like figurines, game board pieces and small building blocks) away from your baby.

hellen Buttigieg At first, you were afraid to put away winter gear because it was impossible to believe that unrelenting, snow-filled season was really over. But spring has slowly slid into place, and now you’re finding spring jackets and raincoats being layered on hangers atop winter jackets. The hall closet is bursting at the seams trying to contain the collection of everything from mitts and snow boots to umbrellas and Wellies. It’s time for the seasonal switch. Make some space for your spring and summer things, and don’t give Jack Frost another thought. Quick tips on organizing your home
Make room for spring. It’s that wonderful time of year again when we can put away the winter gear and lighten the load. Although there’s never enough storage, there are creative ways to better utilize existing spaces when storing out-of-season items. Here are some ideas to consider: Add another shelf above the existing one in all the closets, and purchase under-the-bed organizers. If your bed is not high enough, you can get a bed riser to lift it. Consider creating a document on your computer that serves as an index to outline where you’ve stored what. When winter arrives, you won’t have to rely on your memory to find what you need. 46 Renters Guide | April 23–May 7, 2021
How long have you been putting off that rummage sale? Have you been saving items for years with the intention of selling them, but never seem to get around to it? Pull out your calendar today and book a definite date to have your sale this spring. Blocking the time now increases the likelihood of following through with it later. Another option is to forgo the big sell-off entirely and donate these items instead. It takes several days to orchestrate a successful sale, so determine whether the money you’ll make is worth the time and energy it will take. After all, you can always get more money but you can never replace lost time. Jump-start your spring cleaning with baby steps. If you don’t know where to begin when it comes to spring-cleaning your home, start small. Pick just one room. Moving clockwise, remove anything that doesn’t belong in that room and place it in a “move elsewhere” box to deliver to the room it should live in. Pull out anything that doesn’t give you joy or value and place it in a giveaway box. Toss or recycle any papers and garbage that are left over. Designate this room as a “noclutter zone” so you will always have a sanctuary to escape to, regardless of what the rest of the house looks like. Have you stored your winter coats yet? If you’ve been putting off the task of storing your winter coats because you don’t have an extra closet, there’s a solution. A
sturdy, rolling garment rack makes an ideal spot to store winter coats during the summer. Be sure to dry-clean all items before storing, even if they look clean. Body oils and not-yetvisible food stains attract moths – especially on wool coats. Cover the clothes with a clean, cotton bed sheet or use a zippered canvas wardrobe cover specifically designed for this purpose to keep your clothes dust-free. If you don’t have room for a garment rack, store seasonal items in large garment bags, suitcases or underbed storage bins.
