Style versus comfort Style is certainly top-of-mind when decorating your home, but ignoring function and comfort is a big mistake. Think about how you intend to use the space, and go from there. For example, having a coffee table and side tables within reach of the seating highlights the space’s functionality and convenience, and it makes the room look complete. Slightly off-centre By no fault of homeowners, I often see the dining area light fixture off-centre to where the table should be. Rather than trying to centre the table to the fixture, place the table where it makes sense. Then, simply swag the chain of the fixture, so it’s centred to the table. Wrong starting point When arranging your bedroom furniture, start with the bed placement first. A bed that comfortably sits in the room with side tables and a headboard is all you need. Of course, accent chairs and a dresser are excellent additions, space permitting! Now, back up... Nothing is worse than walking into a room and being met by the back of a big, bulky sofa. When arranging your furniture, view your pieces from every angle. Reconsider your arrangement and alternate angles to create a more pleasing and inviting furniture layout.

Following sockets and outlets Just because your cable outlet is located on a certain wall does not mean your TV should be there. Think about what makes sense to how you plan to use the room, and its natural focal point. Remember, unsightly cables can be re-routed or covered. Maintain good balance Ensure your furnishings are equally distributed to maintain balance. Your main seating area should always have a focal point, whether it’s a window, a fireplace or an archway/opening into another room. If you don’t have one, you can create one using a piece of art or furniture, such as a beautiful console table. Forgetting flow and function When arranging furniture, consider how you will enter, exit and navigate the room. For living rooms, make sure that you can easily get in and out of seating areas without having to awkwardly dodge furnishings.

WHEN MOVING, EVERYONE WINS PLAYING BY THE RULES

CHUCK RESNICK When hiring a professional mover, one expects to have your possessions packed and/or transported safely. It is a common expectation, also shared by your movers. However, sometimes movers may be unable to take some of your belongings onto their truck. Federal and provincial regulations prohibit movers from transporting hazardous materials such as – but not limited to – propane canisters, flammables or gasoline cans unless they are empty of fuel, as well as paints, solvents, firearms or anything deemed to be a hazardous material. It is important for consumers to understand what can and cannot be moved before the day arrives. MOVERS ALSO ESTABLISH THEIR OWN GUIDELINES

At Two Men and a Truck - Canada, it is challenging for us to secure plants on our trucks and we prefer not to move valuables such as jewellery, stocks, bonds and cash – as examples. Common sense dictates that these are items you would want to take yourself. If you have items of extraordinary value such as paintings, sculptures and antiques, let your mover know ahead of time. goods. You may need to arrange for additional insurance. Your renter’s insurance policy may even have a rider for goods in transit. It’s best to check with your insurance company. It is critical to know and understand how much insurance your moving company carries. Most provinces have a “Condition of Carriage” and most movers have their own set insurance amount. For example, at Two Men and a Truck - Canada, you are insured up to $250,000, and we offer replacement cost with a $250 deductible. Extremely large items and tough-to-move items such as pianos, pool tables and massive wall units are a challenge. These types of large items should be discussed before moving day. We do move them every day. We use a piano board that makes it easier to move a baby grand, but it is much harder to move an upright piano, which takes muscle power, heavy duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. Another “rule” to be aware of if

you live in an apartment building or condominium is arranging with your super or property manager to reserve the elevator for the time of your move. Right up front, you should determine how this process works. Let your mover know where the loading/unloading zone is, or whether they will have to walk items through the lobby to get to the elevator. The more your mover knows, the more accurate their estimate will be. No one likes moving day surprises, including your mover. Communication is key. So, once we all know where we stand, we can work together for a successful move. TIPS FOR TRANSITIONING INTO A

SMALL LIVING SPACE MARIE POTTER

With Real estate prices rising, families are getting creative and moving into smaller spaces closer to the core. Apartments were once seen as a place for the young, or those who couldn’t buy, but now it’s a welcome and affordable lifestyle choice and more people are opting for urban convenience, smaller spaces they can call “home.” Going compact can be daunting for some, says Marie Potter, marketing director for Professional Organizers in Canada. “One way to approach small space living is to enjoy the benefits. Simply put, less space means less things, less mess, less stress and more time.” TIPS TO TRANSITION INTO A COMPACT HOME:

Office If you need a home office (or at least a workspace), it’s essential to have a filing system versus a piling system. Invest in a decent, compact filing cabinet on wheels that tucks under the desk. You’ll have every file at your fingertips if you set it up with hanging file folders and tabs in alphabetical order. If you don’t have a desk, use floating shelves and magazine holders, or a wall organizer to manage papers vertically. Stack and label clear bins with supplies on a shelf. baskets that hold fruit or other kitchen essentials. In very small spaces, install a wall-mounted table that folds down when you need it, and folds up and away when the meal is over. Open shelves will create the illusion of more space. Also consider items on wheels – they are easier to move around if necessary. Living space It’s best to keep things light and airy. Use limited colour palettes, plain white or mirrors to create the illusion of space. Seek multipurpose furniture such as an ottoman that can be used as an all-in-one foot rest, table and storage unit. Bathroom Hang a clear shower curtain or use a clear liner with mesh pockets behind it to store your bathroom necessities. Install a towel rack at the back of the tub, like you see in hotels. Have plenty of hooks to keep clothes off the floor. Stack clear, labelled bins under the sink for added storage. Bedroom Condo beds are all the rage for good reason: The mattress platform lifts up using pressurized pistons, so you can store and easily access belongings inside

it. Otherwise, use under-the-bed bins for seasonal storage. Only have one set of sheets and towels, and just stay on top of laundry. Over-the-door hooks and a shoe organizer are a must. Thin design flock hangers create 30 per cent more space than plastic or wood hangers. If the bedroom is really tiny, consider using curtains instead of bi-fold closet doors, or simply remove the closet doors for an open-concept closet. Need help clearing clutter and creating a cleaner look? Use boxes. But be aware – not all boxes are created equal. Some are for storing, some for sorting, and some for showcasing. For storage, boxes should be strong and sturdy, and don’t forget to label them effectively. For sorting, make sure they’re big enough, but not too cumbersome to carry from room to room. For showcasing, make sure they’re stylish. Create both impact and a sense of calm by choosing baskets or boxes in a similar style to use throughout your home. Whether you like wicker or leather, brightly coloured or neutral, consider buying extras as you may not be able to

find the same ones again later. Anytime you have a vast open storage area (i.e. toy chest), think of creative ways to subdivide it to keep it organized. Break big areas into smaller ones by using containers of various sizes. You can reuse the packages that regular household items come in: tissue boxes, cheque boxes and baby-wipe containers. In addition, you can subdivide using drawer dividers, shelves and stacking trays. If your collections are hidden away in a musty basement or forgotten in the corner of your closet, they’re clutter. Collections have their place, but they need to be displayed in a way that reflects their meaning to you. Small items can be mounted and framed in shadow boxes, which can hang on the wall or sit on a table. Larger items stay dust-free when they’re displayed in a shelving unit with glass doors.
