CHUCK RESNICK Hiring the right moving company can save you lots of work, stress and headaches. However, you’ll want to be careful that the company you hire is above board and upholds strict standards. How can you tell? Do your research. Is the company a member of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM)? You can also contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and your provincial government’s consumer protection agency.
You can also: Ask three movers for estimates in writing; get the terms and conditions of your move in writing; ensure you know how your goods will be protected for loss or damage. Does the company have a minimum charge, and how are you charged after that minimum is met? Will you be charged for fuel or travel time to and from their office to your home? Will there be a fuel surcharge or a stairs or longdistance walk charge if they have to park the truck some distance from your door? Is there a deposit required, and what kinds of payment options are available? Do they offer free quotes? How do they arrive at a valuation that is
covered by insurance? It’s best for everyone involved to have a moving contract that outlines what is expected. Read it and ask questions about anything you don’t understand. Hiring a company you can trust makes for a more comfortable, less stressful and successful move.

kathryn kusyszyn Employers check references, landlords check references, and if you’re considering someone as a roommate, you should check their references, too. A person can seem charming initially, then later on turn into a nightmare. Do your homework and avoid such situations. Have a rental application form that’s appropriate for your province. It will cover all the bases. Discuss how they feel about overnight visitors, smoking, pets, sharing household chores and other mutual responsibilities. Ask
why they left their last place and how long they lived there. The application should ask for references from a current employer, a previous landlord and at least one previous roommate. By providing contact info, the prospective roommate is giving you permission to contact them. When calling an employer, state that you are verifying the potential roommate’s employment status and character, not doing an employment check. Ask previous landlords how long the person lived there, whether they paid their rent on time and why they left. Past roommates can be revealing. Ask how long they have known the person and how long they lived together. Ask what they liked and disliked about living with them and
why they went separate ways. If someone cannot provide any references or if none of their references are forthcoming, beware. You will be living with this person in close quarters and relying on them to fulfil their responsibilities. You need to have a reasonable comfort level with them. ChIldproofIng challenges by Kim carlton Having a baby is an exciting, but a nerve-wracking experience. Here are some strategies to help you keep your home safe and sound. • Make sure your electrical outlets are covered. There are many kinds of outlet covers – choose the one that is right for you. • Confirm that you have reliable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure that the batteries are working. • Use doorknob covers on doors to non-childproofed areas (like the bathrooms and laundry room). Baby gates are also an effective solution for keeping kids in or out of a room.
• Don’t use toys or pillows in the crib, especially with young babies — your baby could suffocate. Never use an electric blanket for a child (could cause a fire). • Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub. Drowning can occur in seconds, and mere inches of water pose a risk. • Make sure your bathtub has a non-skid mat or pads to avoid slips. You can use a baby tub inside the bathtub — one with baby slings are especially helpful with infants. • Lock up all medications, alcoholic beverages, chemicals and cleaning products. Make sure matches and lighters are out
of reach. Use cabinet locks to secure these items. • Make sure cords for blinds are not tied together at the bottom (this is a strangulation hazard). • Make sure knives and sharp items are in an area where kids can’t access them. • Check toys for broken parts/ bits that are a choking hazard or sharp. Keep small toys for older children (like figurines, game board pieces and small building blocks) away from your baby.

If there is one lesson every landlord wants residents to remember is to not let strangers into the building. Don’t open the front door for people you don’t know, don’t answer the intercom or Enterphone to unlock the lobby door. Notify your superintendent when you see canvassers going door-to-door. You can never be too cautious. We recommend that residents lock their doors even when they’re inside their apartment. It’s too easy for people to just
