CHUCK RESNICK Hiring the right moving company can save you lots of work, stress and headaches. However, you’ll want to be careful that the company you hire is above board and upholds strict standards. How can you tell? Do your research. Is the company a member of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM)? You can also contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and your provincial government’s consumer protection agency.
You can also: Ask three movers for estimates in writing; get the terms and conditions of your move in writing; ensure you know how your goods will be protected for loss or damage. Does the company have a minimum charge, and how are you charged after that minimum is met? Will you be charged for fuel or travel time to and from their office to your home? Will there be a fuel surcharge or a stairs or longdistance walk charge if they have to park the truck some distance from your door? Is there a deposit required, and what kinds of payment options are available? Do they offer free quotes? How do they arrive at a valuation that is
covered by insurance? It’s best for everyone involved to have a moving contract that outlines what is expected. Read it and ask questions about anything you don’t understand. Hiring a company you can trust makes for a more comfortable, less stressful and successful move.

HOW TO BRIGHTEN UP YOUR APARTMENT

For some, the winter months can be tough to get through — it’s dark and cold, and it’s easy to feel a little lethargic. If you’re especially susceptible to feeling down during Canada’s darker months, it can be particularly hard to live in an apartment that doesn’t get much light. Here are a few tricks for brightening it up! This is an obvious one on the list, but it’s still worth mentioning. Your unit likely feels dark because you don’t have enough natural light coming in from small windows, but
it’s probably also because you’re lacking in artificial light too. Oftentimes when renting, we don’t think about changing the light fixtures in our space, but it’s an easy change and something that can make a dramatic difference. Mirrors give the illusion that a space is bigger. Hanging them not only helps make an area feel roomier, but because they reflect light, mirrors also essentially double the amount of light you have in your unit. Clutter darkens any space, so it’s especially important to keep things simple in a darker unit. Clear your counters and don’t add unnecessary furniture. A cramped space feels dark. Clean
countertops and closed storage space will keep your home looking clean and it will also make it feel lighter and brighter. If you have heavy or dark drapes, curtains or blinds on your windows, consider switching them out for lighter fabrics like sheer cloth. Light-weight fabric will maximize the sunlight entering your space, and still give you the privacy you need in your home. Bright-coloured drapes can add a nice contrast to white walls too. 3 To me, no living room is complete without including some pillows that bring extra comfort, as well as style and personality. If your room already has a lot of patterns from the sofa, window treatments or floor coverings, then you can select pillow fabrics that are quieter. Use your pillow selection to pull together other elements in the room, creating a cohesive colour palette. The pillows should complement the sofa or chair they are placed on. An easy formula is to pick one small print/ pattern, one large pattern, and one solid. For instance, if your room lets in a lot of natural light or is visible to your surrounding neighbours, I suggest having a privacy blind installed. This can be in the form of a roller shade or silhouettes. This type of window treatment helps to diffuse light and provide privacy; however, I often don’t stop there, as this style is most often functional and not decorative. On top of privacy shades, especially in a living room space, I like to add drapery panels to impart a decorative element to the windows. FINd the RIGHT BOX For YOUR NEEdS hellen buttigieg Need help clearing clutter and creating a cleaner look? Use boxes. But be aware – not all boxes are created equal. Some are for storing, some for sorting, and some for showcasing. For storage, boxes should be strong and sturdy, and don’t forget to label them effectively. For sorting, make sure they’re big enough, but not too cumbersome to carry from room to room. For showcasing, make sure they’re stylish. Create both impact and a sense of calm by choosing baskets or boxes in a similar style to use
throughout your home. Whether you like wicker or leather, brightly coloured or neutral, consider buying extras as you may not be able to find the same ones again later. Anytime you have a vast open storage area (i.e. toy chest), think of creative ways to subdivide it to keep it organized. Break big areas into smaller ones by using containers of various sizes. You can reuse the packages that regular household items come in: tissue boxes, cheque boxes and baby-wipe containers. In addition, you can subdivide using drawer dividers, shelves and stacking trays. If your collections are hidden away in a musty basement or forgotten in the corner of your closet, they’re clutter. Collections
have their place, but they need to be displayed in a way that reflects their meaning to you. Small items can be mounted and framed in shadow boxes, which can hang on the wall or sit on a table. Larger items stay dust-free when they’re displayed in a shelving unit with glass doors. EASY WAYS TO ORGANIZE A SMALLER KITCHEN
CHRISTINE PURFIELD Many people are opting for smaller living spaces, which furthers the need to maximize every square foot of their home. The kitchen is undoubtedly one of the most difficult rooms to organize when living in a small space. That said, here are some ideas to create storage in otherwise wasted space. Utilize the doors of under-thesink cupboards to store counterhogging items such as dishcloths, rubber gloves and scrubbies. Hang a pocket organizer on the inside of the door to store messy, but necessary items.
Extend your counter space by fitting a wooden cutting board over the sink. Use it to chop veggies, butter toast, hold the teapot or for any kitchen task that requires more room. Hang corkboards on the inside of cupboard doors to hold measuring cups, recipes or coupons. Invest in a kitchen table that folds flat to the wall. Or, if you’re the DIY type and have a kitchen nook, construct an eating area with a small bench and built-in storage under the seat. Install a magnetic strip over the sink or on the fridge. Use it to store cutting knives and get rid of that space-wasting wooden knife block.
Install stackable shelves in the cupboard to make use of the wasted space between existing shelves. ome offices are becoming the new norm for businesses and employees everywhere. So, how can we create a space that optimizes productivity within our own homes without taking over our personal space? I’m here to share some tips and tricks for creating an office space that works for you, no matter the size of your dwelling. The very first tip is to work in a space with a table or desk. Duh! I know, it seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people work from their sofas. Working from the couch not only sends your mind the wrong message, but it is incredibly hard on your body. Your laptop should never be on your lap (ironic, I know) unless you want to be dealing with severe back issues once this is all over. With your laptop on a desk or table, this allows you to sit in a chair with proper posture and your arms to function at a 90-degree angle. Trust me – your body will thank you later. Now that we know where to set up shop, how can we make this a great space for work during an eight-hour office day? The next thing I would recommend is to
create a space that is pleasant to work in. Natural light will help keep you alert. Working all day in a den with no windows can become exhausting, and therefore lower your level of productivity. On the other hand, dens are great for regular life, where you pop in and out for an hour to check email. During an entire day’s work, however, you might want to consider rearranging some furniture to place your desk near a window in such a way that your laptop doesn’t pick up a glare. If this means setting up a desk in a common area, that’s ok. Just make sure that everything in your office has a home so that at the end of the workday, you can put it all back where it belongs, and you’re not looking at a messy desk for the rest of the evening. This rule goes for any dedicated office spaces, as well. Just because you can close the door and hide the mess doesn’t mean you should. Every day should
be started with a clean slate, and that means a clean desk! A de-cluttered space is a decluttered mind. When your mind is clear, you’re not only happier but also more productive. There’s a lot to be said about valuing our mental health. This is why things such as natural light are so important. Also, consider decorating your home office space with some plants to help purify the air while you work, even if this means moving a little plant from the living room to your workspace during the day and moving it back when you’re done. My final tip is to create a schedule for your workday. This not only keeps you on track with work tasks, but also helps you avoid trips to the fridge every five minutes looking for a snack. Set specific times for lunch and breaks. Set the alarm if you have to. This will get you into a routine and boost your productivity throughout the day.
