MOVING ETIQUETTE CHUCK RESNICK Whether you are moving into or out of a new space, there are certain things to do to make things go as smoothly as possible. Think of the following tips as ‘moving etiquette’. • Let your neighbours at both ends know when to expect the movers to pull into your place. Ensure the movers park and unload to avoid blocking anyone else’s driveway or trespassing on other property.
• If you are booking a residential move, try and select 9 or 10 a.m. for your truck to arrive since people who work 9-to-5 are not home. You are less likely to cause them any inconvenience. • Book elevators in advance in the building you are leaving and the one you will be moving into so you have the benefit of arranging your time comfortably. Check to see if movers are restricted to using specific doors. • Have your pets cared for elsewhere. Moving means doors will be open for long periods, and animals wandering about can be dangerous for them and for the movers. • Most people wonder whether to tip movers. It is not compulsory,
so it is totally up to you. • Most moving companies are good about removing packing materials, crates, boxes, etc. when they leave. If anything is left behind, collect it yourself and dispose of it. • As items are moved out of rooms, sweep, mop and clean what you can. Some people hire cleaners before giving the key to the landlord or new owners. The hall closet is bursting at the seams trying to contain the collection of everything from mitts and snow boots to umbrellas and Wellies. It’s time for the seasonal switch. Make some space for your spring and summer things, and don’t give Jack Frost another thought. Quick tips on organizing your home
Make room for spring. It’s that wonderful time of year again when we can put away the winter gear and lighten the load. Although there’s never enough storage, there are creative ways to better utilize existing spaces when storing out-of-season items. Here are some ideas to consider: Add another shelf above the existing one in all the closets, and purchase under-the-bed organizers. If your bed is not high enough, you can get a bed riser to lift it. Consider creating a document on your computer that serves as an index to outline where you’ve stored what. It takes several days to orchestrate a successful sale, so determine whether the money you’ll make is worth the time and energy it will take. After all, you can always get more money but you can never replace lost time. Jump-start your spring cleaning with baby steps. If you don’t know where to begin when it comes to spring-cleaning your home, start small. Pick just one room. Moving clockwise, remove anything that doesn’t belong in that room and place it in a “move elsewhere” box to deliver to the room it should live in. Pull out anything that doesn’t give you joy or value and place it in a giveaway box. Toss or recycle any papers and garbage that are left over. Designate this room as a “noclutter zone” so you will always have a sanctuary to escape to, regardless of what the rest of the house looks like. Have you stored your winter coats yet? If you’ve been putting off the task of storing your winter coats because you don’t have an extra closet, there’s a solution. A
sturdy, rolling garment rack makes an ideal spot to store winter coats during the summer. Be sure to dry-clean all items before storing, even if they look clean. Body oils and not-yetvisible food stains attract moths – especially on wool coats. Cover the clothes with a clean, cotton bed sheet or use a zippered canvas wardrobe cover specifically designed for this purpose to keep your clothes dust-free. If you don’t have room for a garment rack, store seasonal items in large garment bags, suitcases or underbed storage bins. what to look for in a rental Whether it’s your first apartment or your 10th, you’re going to want to find the home that best suits your needs. While looking for a new apartment, use this handy checklist to make sure you’ve covered all your bases. THE RENTAL UNIT
• Is there a storage place for extra belongings such as bikes, luggage, etc.? Who has access to this place? • Where is the closest bus stop? • Is the apartment near services that are used regularly? You need to take the elevator in your apartment building every day, and there are some huge pet peeves that come along for the ride. Here’s an elevator etiquette refresher. 1. Exit thEn EntEr. Let passengers off before boarding the elevator. 2. whEn to takE thE stairs.
One flight up or two flights down – use the stairs when
able. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but it helps keep the flow on a busy elevator. 3. hold thE door! Your neighbours will remember you watching the doors close on them – and not in a good way. Hold the door for others who are running to catch the elevator. 4. kids. If they’re old enough, let them push the button, but don’t let your children play with the panel or light up all the floors like a Christmas tree. That’s no way to impress the neighbours or make friends.

Style versus comfort Style is certainly top-of-mind when decorating your home, but ignoring function and comfort is a big mistake. Think about how you intend to use the space, and go from there. For example, having a coffee table and side tables within reach of the seating highlights the space’s functionality and convenience, and it makes the room look complete. Slightly off-centre By no fault of homeowners, I often see the dining area light fixture off-centre to where the table should be. Rather than trying to centre the table to the fixture, place the table where it makes sense. Then, simply swag the chain of the fixture, so it’s centred to the table. Wrong starting point When arranging your bedroom furniture, start with the bed placement first. A bed that comfortably sits in the room with side tables and a headboard is all you need. Of course, accent chairs and a dresser are excellent additions, space permitting! Now, back up... Nothing is worse than walking into a room and being met by the back of a big, bulky sofa. When arranging your furniture, view your pieces from every angle. Reconsider your arrangement and alternate angles to create a more pleasing and inviting furniture layout.
