Okay, so spring is still a few days away (officially March 19), and although it may still be cold and snowy outside, forgive me for the optimistic headline. Because regardless of the current temperatures, spring is just around the corner and with it, comes the urge to open up windows, let the air in, and sweep out the dust and dirt for a seasonal refresh. No matter how good we may be at keeping our spaces clean, long winter months of closed windows and indoor heating contribute to musty, stilted interiors that long for a good scrub. On page 6 of this issue of Renters Guide, you’ll find five easy cleaning hacks sure to get the cobwebs cleared and the dust busted. Spring is also a good time to declutter, starting with everyone’s weak spot – the clothes closet. If you have a hard time getting rid of things you no longer wear (but somehow need to keep), you’re not alone. Organizational expert, Hellen Buttigieg, offers up the top seven excuses people make to hold onto their stuff. Check out what she has to say on page 25 and then, when you’ve freed up some space in your closet, reward yourself with a shopping spree. Hack #3 - area rugs
Use a damp cloth or wet pillowcase (reuse old pillowcases!) to wipe ceiling fans that have accumulated cobwebs and dust during the winter. If you’re unable to reach the blades this way, try using a microfibre duster with a large extension pole for hard-to- reach places.
Bring area rugs outside on a dry day and beat them with a broom to remove dirt, lint and debris. Spray the rugs outside with a natural carpet deodorizer to refresh them and let them air dry. After bringing them back inside, vacuum rugs thoroughly. Hack #4 - Linens and curtains

Take the glass light bulb covers off ceiling fans and chandeliers and stick them in the dishwasher. They come out sparkling clean, and it’s less work for your tired hands.
It’s a good idea to freshen up pillows, blankets, comforters and even curtains as they have likely accumulated dust and odours. For a quick refresh, gather and hang linens and curtains outside on a clothesline. For a deeper clean, you may want to throw them into
the washing machine if the tag indicates it’s safe to do so, then hang them outside. This is both eco-friendly and economical. Hack #5 - Walls
Fill your sink with a natural, general purpose cleaner such as water and vinegar. Dip your very clean mop into the sink, remove all excess solution, and then mop your walls. This will remove most stains with ease! No rinsing is required, if you keep the mop dry enough.

In modern times, more women (and men), whether writers or not, are enjoying the benefits of solitary living. Primary among the benefits of living alone is the freedom to come and go as one likes, do as one pleases, and not answer to anyone. There is no need to deal with others’ preferences in the areas of music, food, decorating, entertainment, temperature and
above all, cleanliness. Only one person’s mess to clean up, one person’s laundry, one person’s dishes… ah, heavenly! Other perks are privacy and the opportunity for full selfexpression. No one is present to cramp one’s style. This type of home is conducive to productivity, since there is no one around with whom to get into long conversations. The next Great Canadian novel is more likely to be written without the distraction of others. Especially for introverts, who recharge by spending time alone, this living arrangement is desirable and potentially essential for their well-being. A single-inhabitant home can
