Top 8 renter issues JAne HermAn Harmonious living is all about treating others with respect and consideration. Start by making a concerted effort by avoiding these ‘top eight renter issues.’ 1. Keep the noise down. Take off your high heels at the door, refrain from vacuuming, using power tools or hanging pictures at 10 p.m. 2. When in the elevator, hold it for a neighbour. Likewise, don’t hold it unnecessarily, like while you’re waiting for your spouse/ roommate to put their coat on,

lock the door, and walk all the way down the hall. 3. No Smoking. If smoking is not allowed in your building or on the floor, don’t do it. 4. Respect and maintain common areas as if they were an extension of your own home. 5. Ensure your pet is a good neighbour, too. Walk your pet regularly, and stoop’n’scoop. Also, make sure your pet doesn’t howl all day or bark all night. 6. Keep an eye on the time and on your laundry regularly. Don’t leave your stuff sitting in the washer or dryer after it has finished. 7. Remember to dress appropriately when taking out

trash, recycling, picking up mail, doing laundry or getting something from your car. 8. Respect your neighbours’ right to privacy. Helping friends move Jennifer Braun The year’s most popular moving dates are coming up. I want to suggest you actually consider helping a friend move. Why? Because it won’t be as bad as you think, and your fellow renter would really appreciate it. If a friend asks you to help them move, it does not mean you will be facilitating the entire move. In fact, I really do not suggest relying on friends for a complete move, but rather for a pair of helping hands. There are many ways you can help with a move, including before the move, during the move and

even after the move. Getting personal belongings organized and neatly packed into boxes is actually half the work. Moving also involves a lot of cleaning – be it the old place or the new place that still needs to be vacuumed and dusted before bringing in furniture. Then, after all that work, there’s unpacking and getting organized. So, before you say no to helping with a move, consider asking your friend what they need help with. Your strength at some point may be needed, but just being there to help pack, clean and organize can also be a big help. All that being said, helping friends move still isn’t the most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. That’s why I say

WHY YOU’RE IN DEBT GAIL VAZ-OXLADE

teasing yourself by drooling over a bunch of stuff you don’t need. DO YOU USE CREDIT TO BUY THINGS YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO BUY WITH CASH?

People who are in debt often say they no longer want to be in debt. And often they take the steps to get themselves out. But, it seems to me, there are people who claim they want to get out of debt but do little to change their behaviour and the outcome. They keep on doing the things that got them into debt in the first place. Here are four questions you may want to ask about why you’re in the hole.

If you can’t afford to pay for something in cash today, you should not be buying that thing, I don’t care how important you think it is, how great a deal you’re getting, or how desperate you feel. Using credit is no way to get out of debt. Put away all forms of credit and commit to building yourself a budget that balances. If you want something, you’ll have to give up something else to accumulate the cash you need to buy it.

DO YOU BUY STUFF YOU DON’T NEED?

DO YOU BUY THINGS FOR A ONE-TIME USE THAT YOU COULD BORROW FROM A FRIEND OR RENT?

The biggest cue that you’ve got the impulse monkey on your back are the things you have bought but not used: The clothes with the tags still on, the shoes you have yet to wear, the new dishes you’ve used once in the six months that you’ve owned them. Impulse shoppers are the first to admit they have a problem and the last to do anything about it. If you’re an impulse shopper, you need to remove the fuel for the impulse. That means cutting up your credit cards – or disabling them in some other fashion – and limiting the amount of cash you carry. It also means leaving your debit card at home unless you’re headed out to take care of a need: Gas, groceries, etc. When you do go shopping, you have to use a list and stick to it. Window shopping is torture for the impulse shopper so don’t browse stores since you’re just 28  Renters Guide  |  Oct. 23–Nov. 6, 2020

Practically everyone is guilty of this. You need something such as a sewing machine or power washer twice a year so you go and buy one and then watch it – and the money you spent, likely on credit – sit and grow cobwebs (and interest charges?). What’s with us all? In the old days, friends borrowed from each other and stuff got way more use. Now our possessions are so much a part of who we are we a) hate to lend and b) hate to have to admit we don’t already have one. Dumb! DO YOU BUY CERTAIN BRANDS BECAUSE THEY ARE A STATUS SYMBOL?

While any car gets you from point A to point B, high-cost, brand-name buggies come with “oohs” and “ahhs” from friends and relatives. Ditto the D&G

sunglasses, the LV handbags, the CL shoes . . . I could go on forever. If you’re paying a premium to have a brand name, you have to ask yourself why. Is it because you don’t have confidence in your own sense of style? Is it because you’re trying to emulate the dudes and dames of TV and movie fame, wearing what they wear, driving what they drive, eating what they eat? How come? Hey, I’m all for spending your money on the things that bring you pleasure, so if you’re not using credit to make expensive brands part of your image, I’m not talking to you. But if you are using credit, what makes you think you have the right to this stuff if you can’t afford to pay for it?
