WITH FALL JUST AROUND THE CORNER, DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE TRENDS THAT YOU ARE EXCITED TO WORK WITH? I’m loving that mid-

century modern is back in a big way. It has a slight modern twist. I think it will really add some sophistication and masculinity to interior spaces.

2

WHERE DO YOU GO TO GET YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? I travel

a ton. I love visiting design hubs like Paris, London, Palm Springs,

Miami, NYC, the list goes on and on. I also love exploring design hotels, museums, libraries…

3

WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF DÉCOR YOU LIKE TO SPLURGE ON? I love

quality in furniture and accessories. Probably my biggest splurge is

lighting. I think lighting is the jewelry of the home.

4

DO YOU HAVE ANY TRIED-AND-TRUE DIY TRICKS THAT HAVE A TENDENCY PASS OFF AS AN EXPENSIVE BUY? Gold leaf, I could gold

leaf anything. Old frames instantly become luxurious, crown molding is kicked up a notch—get out your gold leaf for an instant luxury look.

5

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPACE TO STYLE IN A HOME AND WHY? I

love the formal living room or parlour. It’s the hub of all things good. I

love to entertain and I think the formal gathering place in the home is an opportunity to bring in chic design. It’s more about the design and less about function. It’s the room where memories are made.

FOLLOW REGARDING THE NUMBER OF ACCENT DÉCOR PIECES YOU USE? (FOR EX: NUMBER OF PILLOWS ON A SOFA OR VASES ON A TABLE?) I think we need to toss rules out the window

when it comes to accessorizing. Accessories are the “winks” in the home - the pieces that show off our personality and individuality. So have fun, if its looks right it is right- play with the set-up of accessories till the look right to you.

7

WHERE DO YOU STAND ON OVERALL HOME STYLE – DO YOU THINK EACH ROOM SHOULD HAVE ITS OWN STORY? OR DO

YOU PREFER THE HOME TO HAVE A COMPREHENSIVE STYLE? I

like a little cohesiveness… I don’t like a frenetic home, its feels forced and inauthentic. A home should reflect you and have nods to your various loves but it shouldn’t be “around the world” in 7 rooms.

RAISING ROOF THE

Building a Dream by Marie Soprovich Owner Aquarian Renovations

H

omeowner Dirk Chan bought a sprawling bungalow in a very desirable neighbourhood near the river and knew that “one day” he would renovate it. Like many busy business owners, Dirk put off the renovation until the need became so great that the renovation was essential. “The house was stuck in the 60’s complete with a blue shag carpet and a very outdated layout. The paint was flaking off the outside of the house and my home was the dirge of the neighbourhood for six years…” Dirk recalls with a twist of humour. “It was time to either fix it up or sell it.” Add to that the embarrassment of things just not working – especially the plumbing! The time was up! Dirk remembers the turning point in the renovating decision process. He remembered two critical incidents that were decisive turning points one being a missed flight that created some significant “think time” but the biggest was the “water leak in all

12 YPNEXTHOME.CA

BEFORE

three bathrooms. These were so bad that I had to turn the main water valve off and on just to take a shower! Then one day a most embarrassing thing happened when I was hosting a barbeque in my back yard and I had to leave the water on! The steam from the leaky shower in the basement was so bad it set off the alarm and the fire department came.” That was the last straw for this homeowner and he was motivated to create some change. Dirk had the right idea about his renovation and his priority was for quality of life and decided to go BIG… Deciding to go big was not about adding additional square footage but increasing the ceiling height and creating an open concept dream kitchen and living space that embodies entertainment, wonderful meals, outstanding wine and great company. The dream home Dirk had always wanted was about to unfold as he planned the renovation with designers and builders at Aquarian. “Location is everything,” Dirk reminds us. “Laurier Heights has such large lots, unique houses, is extremely quiet, very private, filled with mature trees and has great resale value if you ever want to leave.” Dirk had contemplated the downtown condo scene but realized that, “I know I won’t lose money when it does come time to sell this property so why not have my dream home built here and live in it for twenty or more years!” The Aquarian team couldn’t agree with him more. This house was rock solid and plenty large so this homeowner’s vision did not include changing the footprint but he was pretty clear on what he did want

to create. “I wanted to have high ceilings to give the bungalow a sense of height and grandeur along with an open concept that still enabled me to have a large area in the kitchen and dining area where I could seat up to 20 for dinner. I wanted all new electrical, plumbing and wiring. The budget was important but so was the high quality workmanship essential for a neighbourhood like this.” Dirk goes on to describe his thought process as he looked for just the right contractor for his renovation. “Word of mouth is always the best testimonial and there were glowing reviews. I wanted an experienced company who had been around for a long time and as a business owner, I know what it takes to maintain and grow a business. I needed a professional who would get it done in the timeline I needed it completed in, so selecting Aquarian for the job was the perfect fit for me and I am really glad I did.” As the design process unfolded, homeowner Dirk “loved the interaction with the Aquarian team” and found the 3-D renderings to be very helpful in “envisioning what could be done, how the colour scheme could work and the functional areas of the kitchen flow with the ultra large island design. The energy in the house was intriguing and with the use of arches and tall walls for art along with the copper hood over the fireplace and my custom wine cellar complete with a theatre room makes for a really cool place and that was what I wanted for my place. Now that the house is finished it is amazing to see just how close the 3-D visuals are to the final product. I love it! The openness, the height and vaulted ceilings create a look and feel so much bigger than it actually is. I love the layout, it is functional first yet feels distinctive and grand.” When in the design process, this savvy homeowner

also took his renovation design features into the future. Dirk’s intention is to live in this home for a very long time to come and both the technology preparations and the structural items that support longevity for this homeowner were included. The master bedroom walk-in closet holds the washer and dryer so no stair climbing is necessary. The stairs going to the basement have been reinforced for a future chair lift and the backs of all the toilets have outlets in place for the inevitable electric toilets that the homeowner expects will become common place. Technological advances are part Dirk’s world and he also saw value for the installation of wired tubing from a centrally located wiring closet into and throughout the house so that when fiber optics become available it will be easy to access the fibre optics from any point in the house. A gorgeous hardwood floor with hand- scraped hickory replaced the blue shag and the homeowner’s love of iron worked well in the railings. The lighting fixtures from Hubbarton-Forge matched the antique furniture and the modern style dining tables and chairs are superb. The beautiful collection of artwork that the homeowner had amassed over the years finished a very classy look in this home. “I entertain a great deal so the gourmet kitchen was built with that in mind. I won’t run out of kitchen counter space again now. The Sub-Zero, Wolf and Miele appliances make entertaining and cooking a joy.” The ensuite bath, the rain fall shower, side jets, heated towel racks and floors coupled with the motion activated lights are a soothing balm to the water issues of the past. This homeowner couldn’t be more pleased with his renovation, the process and most importantly, the results. The temperature controlled and highly customized wine cellar and the entertainment centre in the basement are highlights that just keep delighting the homeowner and his guests. “The art and beauty of this home just keep astounding me. I deeply appreciate the Aquarian team and sub trades for their passion and dedication. They worked on my house as if they were building their own. ” When thinking back on the project Homeowner Dirk says, “I really appreciated the Friday meetings with the site supervisor, as no matter how much planning was done there were things I didn’t envision and some quick decision making could still be made. To have this kind of interaction with the site supervisor and trades definitely made the finished product even better than the drawing board. I take such joy in knowing my home is a place where I can relax and enjoy my 14 YPNEXTHOME.CA

"The openness, the height and vaulted ceilings create a look and feel so much bigger than it actually is." personalized space with friends and family. Everyone just loves the grandness and words like ‘wow’ and ‘stunning’ are common reactions. My friends are a discerning bunch and they all say the finishing is out of the ordinary and the eight month timeframe in which this project was completed is also an eye opener when I tell them.” This homeowner will enjoy the fruits of his investment for a very long time to come. Cheers to those who are fortunate enough to enjoy his hospitality, share a meal, toast with a glass of wine or simply have a tour of his home.

s a custom home builder and renovator, Ackard Contractors is constantly researching new products to ensure clients are receiving the utmost up-to-date trends and latest improved designs. When designing kitchens, we want our clients to not only have a space that functions well, but will also reflect their specific needs and tastes. Today’s kitchens are favoring a streamline look that features large windows with minimal upper cabinets. Open cabinets are popular for customers who desire items within reach. Flat panel and shaker style cabinet doors are easy to maintain and provide a timeless style. Soft close hardware for both cabinet doors and drawers offer a slam proof solution along with pull out pantries both full height and half height. Colour is trending towards light, bright and timeless white or even warm gray tones. Clients are also enjoying textures such as distressed finishes or top glazing that add character. Universal design or “aging in place” design is becoming more common. As clients plan for future retirement, they can continue to live in their home safely and independently as they get older. Ackard’s team will provide you with the most current creative solutions and expert designs. Visit our website and give us a call to experience the results you will love.

Tips and Tricks

Decoding

THE CODE By Michael Nyikes

Q A

A reader recently asked whether computeraided design programs have safety code regulations built into the software so that the drawings produced will automatically meet building and fire code require-ments? The short answer is no, but the long answer is “sort of”. Let me explain. Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design using a software program. Working in both 2D and 3D formats, the main purpose of CAD programs are to increase the productivity and efficiency of a designer, improve the quality and accuracy of the design, facilitate better communications through documentation, and to create a drawing of something that can be constructed or manufactured. There are a wide range of CAD programs on the market at different price-points tailored to suit the needs of everyone from kids to seasoned design professionals. The inexpensive CAD programs give limited functionality that allow for basic designing. The higher priced CAD programs have more “bells and whistles” including elaborate product libraries, options to do material costing, photo-rendering abilities, as well as allowing the user to input specific design parameters to meet safety code requirements in their area. As an example, if the building code stipulates that all concrete driveway slabs must be 4 inches thick, or perhaps that all exterior walls must be constructed with 2”x6” wood studs, then those types of parameters can be established within the CAD program by the designer. Therefore every time he uses his “slab tool” in CAD to draw a concrete driveway slab, or his “exterior wall tool” to draw an exterior wood wall, they will automatically be drawn to the correct size in order to meet the code requirements. It’s important to note that although the options for this type of specification and customization within CAD programs are limitless, its success relies completely on the experience and skill of the designer who is inputting the parameters. With new editions of safety codes being released every five years or so (not to mention numerous interim changes happening regularly throughout), it is crucial for design

professionals to remain knowledgable on current code requirements and changes from ongoing training and updates. Future Decoding the Code columns will continue to answer readers’ questions about how the provincial safety codes affect their projects. Email your questions to me at decodingthecode@gmail. com. Be sure to include which city you live in, as well as your phone number in case I need to follow up with you.

Tips And Tricks

Want to improve your home’s curb appeal?

THINK CONCRETE! By Renée Majeau, Co-owner City MiniMix Concrete

a retaining wall or curbing into your landscaping, concrete can make a vivid impact! According to Kent Majeau of City MiniMix Concrete “hardscaping is becoming increasingly popular with homeowners because concrete is modern and clean all while being practical and cost-efficient. Landscapers are doing extremely beautiful and creative things with concrete.” For more ideas on using concrete to improve your home’s curb appeal, check out these fantastic books: Quick & Easy Curb Appeal and Hardscaping With Decorative Concrete.

WHEN YOU THINK OF IMPROVING YOUR HOME’S CURB APPEAL, WHAT COMES TO

mind? Most homeowners immediately think of trimmed hedges, a fresh coat of paint and strategically placed potted plants or flowers. But did you know that an inspired concrete project can dramatically improve the value and curb appeal of your home? Here are three creative ways to use concrete to improve curb appeal:

1

USE CONCRETE TO INJECT TEXTURE AND COLOUR INTO YOUR FRONT YARD. Concrete is versatile – it comes in a vast array of colours, designs and patterns, including stamped, stenciled, exposed aggregate, polished and more. Why not consider adding interest and creativity to your outdoor space by pouring a colourful patio or stamping your driveway with an interesting pattern? A striking concrete walkway in an off-white colour can add depth interest to your home’s curb appeal.

Renée Majeau is co-owner of City MiniMix Concrete, and also works as a business instructor in the JR Shaw School of Business at NAIT in Edmonton, AB. When she is not busy managing the office or handling the sales & marketing (writing & blogging!) for City MiniMix Concrete, she enjoys doing DIY concrete projects and is also the chair of Krete for Kids, a playground construction grant program which donates concrete to communities and schools in need. Visit www.cityminimix.com or call 780.974.7969

2

Concrete is extremely durable – it can withstand the harshest of Canadian winters, and it requires very little maintenance. If you have crumbling or cracked stairs, sidewalks or driveway, concrete offers big bang for your buck - it never rots or splinters, is pest-resistant and does not require re-staining year after year. New concrete stairs and a sidewalk as well as a fresh coat of paint can radically change the look of your home! USE CONCRETE TO REPAIR ANY CRUMBLING STAIRS OR SIDEWALKS.

3

Concrete is functional and strong – it can be used effectively to create dramatic architectural or landscaping features in your front yard, often allowing homeowners to seamlessly blend interior and exterior living spaces. Whether you want to incorporate raised beds, USE CONCRETE TO ADD INTERESTING ARCHITECTURAL OR LANDSCAPING DETAILS.

Go With Glass

Window + Door Trends 2015 By Aynsley Dueck, Marketing Manager

IF THERE WAS EVER AN EXCITING TIME

to discuss windows and doors, the time is now. New technology – beautiful views – more colours and accessories – natural light and fresh air. The combination just might have the biggest impact on your home renovation; so go with glass. These are some of the biggest trends for windows and doors in 2015: OVERSIZED OPENINGS

Homeowners are drawn to natural light like never before. Dave Smeding from Shield Windows & Doors comments, “We recently cut a new opening in a kitchen to fit a 16’ wide sliding door. It really opened up the space, and updated the look of the home.” Replacing smaller openings with large, spanning openings can have an incredible impact on the home, inside AND out. 22 YPNEXTHOME.CA

Some homes already have the benefit of large openings, especially on the front of the house, but the wood frames have since rotted out. Fiberglass frames work well to achieve the large size requirements, even with triple pane glass, and fewer mullions. With technological advancements in insulating glass, large openings can also be comfortable. The combination of argon gas and customizable low emissivity coatings creates a better insulating window, in hot summers and cold winters. A good window expert can even provide advice on how to tailor glass that faces different elevations, while considering roof overhangs, shade from nearby trees, the quantity of windows, and the size of the room. BOLD FRAMES

In recent years, white frames have been popular for two main reasons – simplicity and cost. White continues to be strong, and as a classic colour, it will never go out of style. But in recent years, homeowners are looking to other neutral colours – black, silver, slate, and dark brown. With modern technology, these colours are now available for the interior or exterior. “Black has been especially popular recently,” comments Dave Smeding. “It blends in with wood siding or stucco on the exterior – and on the interior it contrasts nicely with light walls and wood flooring.”

MANY HOMEOWNERS PREFER THE DISAPPEARING SCREENS, AS THEY DO NOT COVER UP ‘STATEMENT’ FRONT DOORS WITH UNIQUE DESIGN DETAILS. INFINITY GLASS

Infinity pools create a lovely illusion of endless water. In the same way, infinity glass creates the illusion of an endless space. When windows stretch floorto-ceiling, or at least to the floor, they eliminate the usual boundary between interior exterior spaces. The result is a brighter, more spacious-feeling room, with the calming effect of nature. FRESH AIR

Homeowners are asking for greater access to fresh air. Venting windows, or operators, used to be smaller, and allowed less air passage. Now, with stronger frames and tougher hardware, crank windows such as casements and awnings can stretch 7’ or 8’ wide or tall, respectively. With such a big operator, the view is virtually unobstructed. Doors should also be considered for access to fresh air. Sliding doors are convenient, as they do not use up any additional space inside or outside when open. Swinging doors can offer ventilation with disappearing screens or storm doors. Many homeowners prefer the disappearing screens, as they do not cover up ‘statement’ front doors with unique design details. CLERESTORY WINDOWS

Clerestory windows have been particularly popular in recent residential projects. They are typically horizontal windows in rooms with high ceilings. Often grouped in sets of three or more, the repetition or rhythm is an attractive architectural element. These windows can also provide natural ventilation with electric operators, controlled by a switch. duxtonwindows.com SEPT - OCT, 2015  |  HOME DECOR AND RENOVATIONS  23

What the Trendsetters

WANT FOR 2016 T

here are four design trends you need to know about for 2016 and beyond: fresh neutrals, white kitchens, smart mudrooms, and modern organic. Our clients have come to us this year requesting these exact things for their homes, and the good news is that there’s still time to be an early adopter. The even better

By Tracy Fortin

news is that all four of these trends have timeless qualities built right into them, so right now is a unique opportunity to invest in your home’s current and future appeal at the same time, with the same tile. If you’re embarking on any design or reno projects in 2016, make sure that at least one of them is one of these:

MODERN ORGANIC

Picture the modern organic home as the child of Restoration Hardware and the Apple Store. It’s all the best parts of the rustic and minimalist trends, and the finished look is perfect for 2016 and beyond: it’s both sleek and textured, cool and warm, bright and monochromatic. Modern organic homes feel perfectly liveable and sinkright-in comfortable, but with the added bonus of your laptop suddenly looking to be part of an intentional tabletop vignette. Nice styling, you. 24 YPNEXTHOME.CA

The modern organic trend is especially timely for fall and winter. Rustic elements warm up any space in cooler weather, and they fit in perfectly with roaring fireplaces and a good book (read on your very modern tablet, of course). Want to see more of this style? Visit our website and subscribe to our newsletter for exclusive photos of a 4000-square-foot remodel we recently completed. It’s a perfect example of a modern organic home right here in Edmonton. We’d love to hear what you’re planning for your home in 2016. Are any of the four big trends on your project list?

SMART MUDROOMS

This seems like a trend out of left field, but if you think about it, don’t we all want a smart mudroom? Especially now that the kids are back in school, and especially as we watch for the season’s first flurries, a mudroom should be a practical oasis in your home: it’s a space that quarantines the mess of the outside world and is small enough to style easily and keep reasonably well organized. Think about adding a charging station or a useful dog shower in this area, and remember what comes into this room that you want to avoid coming any further. FRESH NEUTRALS

After a long stretch with brown interiors (think espresso millwork and chocolate hardwood), Edmonton’s trendsetters are now asking for a completely different neutral palette: white and grey. We’re hearing requests for “clean and fresh” from all our clients lately. We’re throwing off the heavy, dark colours of the early 2000s and rediscovering the other half of the fan deck. Want to nudge your own home into 2016? Let us save you from the horror that is trying to pick modern neutral paint colours from the seemingly endless options: Ben Moore’s White Dove and Pewter Grey are my two favourites right now because they’re so warm and sophisticated. They look especially good as a neutral backdrop to strategic pops of your favourite bright colours. WHITE KITCHENS

A far cry from the hospital cafeterias of yore, today’s most-requested kitchens are either white or off-white, and incredibly welcoming. We’ve all seen them in movies and magazines, but now they’re coming off the sound stages and into real homes. The trick to having a warm, inviting white kitchen is to get your lighting just right. We can’t overestimate the importance of this; lighting is the difference between ambiance and ambulance. To get your lighting perfect, layer functional overhead pots and subdued under-cabinet lights, and then add the wow factor with pendants. And here’s your bonus for installing a white kitchen: it’s the only kitchen that is completely timeless. Dark or wood-tone cabinetry and trendy backsplashes all tie your kitchen to a specific decade, but a thoughtfully planned white kitchen transcends time. Get it right, and it will look fresh and current for decades to come.

Homeowners need to realize that their contractor is going to get to know them on a very personal level as they will be in their space, observing their lifestyle habits, meeting their pets, learning about family patterns, likes and dislikes and personal tastes.
