There are so many new upgrades, products and finishings available today that, if you’re not careful you can end up blowing your budget in no time. Jo Alcorn, design specialist appearing on HGTV, says to choose your products wisely and splurge on the right components. Countertops, cabinets, faucets, appliances, lighting fixtures, and floors are all great places to get the biggest bang for your buck. And Jo adds that splurging on the high visibility, high functionality items – you will never regret walking into a room you love! Just like a good meal, every kitchen needs its fixings. From countertop appliances, sets of pots and pans, and well-crafted accessories, it’s the little touches can make all the difference for any cook. The holidays will soon be upon us and are a time of reflection and giving thanks for all the blessings in our lives. It is also a time to give back - to our families, friends and community. A group of renovators and their suppliers belonging to the Canadian Homebuilders’ Association - Edmonton Region (CHBA-ER) Renovation Committee, did just that when they paid tribute to Renovation Month by organizing and delivering a community service project to WINGS, a very deserving charity in the Edmonton area. The support from the renovators and suppliers was overwhelming, and the moms and children at the shelter were thrilled with their new space! See page 20 to read about all the amazing work done by this generous group. Whether you’re planning a small project or a major home transformation, we have the information to help you every step of the way. Heed the advice of the professionals gracing our pages, and do it right the first time. Hiring a professional means you can renovate with confidence, and that your renovation dreams can be realized. All of us at Home Décor & Renovations would like to thank our readers and advertisers for your support and wish you all the best of the season. We look forward to a great 2017! COOKING UP A KITCHEN where to save, where to splurge By Jo Alcorn | Photography by Jason Hartog
WHEN IT’S TIME FOR A NEW DESIGN you want to get the most bang for your buck. In a home I recently designed for a family, they longed for an open concept main floor for greater interaction as a family and more fluent entertaining. While not every budget will allow for such a large scale renovation, the lessons are the same: choose your products wisely and splurge on the right components. The kitchen is the heart of every home and a natural gathering place. No matter the size of your surface area, countertops should be on your splurge list. Kitchen islands are a focal point and a common gathering zone so be sure to love the countertops you choose. 8 YPNEXTHOME.CA
Your cabinets need to be useful and maximize the space available. I always recommend you find a good, reputable, local company that has some great past projects for you to look at for inspiration. Additionally, I urge all my clients to go the extra mile and get soft-close hardware; you might not see this little gem but the luxury of no more slamming drawers or doors in the kitchen is something you’ll thank me for! A company I have been working with more and more lately is called GRASS, the maker of what I would consider the Cadillac of soft-close hardware. This company aligns with such brands as Armani/ Dada so you know you are getting luxury when you choose their hardware. GRASS is available all over Canada for every cabinet
manufacturer…all you have to do is ask for it. Oh how I love to install a new faucet in any kitchen I work on! I love all the new features added to faucets in recent years, but one of my all-time favorites is the tap technology. Dirty hands are a breeze to clean with a simple tap and on flows the water. In this kitchen I installed the Delta Trinsic with Touch 20 technology in matte black. This faucet is stylish and adds the right amount of drama! Get appliances that will work with your family’s lifestyle. Here I chose Samsung’s Chef Collection in stainless steel; these premium kitchen appliances are gold star and have been tested and approved by Michelin Star Chefs. And don’t forget the
range hood; the Lux Island low profile range hood from Zephyr provided an unobstructed view through the kitchen to the front hallway and it delivered the minimalist look we were going for. As a bonus, it has a wireless remote control. Lighting fixtures are both hanging art and a staple within the overall design concept. Here I went with a more industrial look pendant over the island to tie in the exposed beams, and then matched it with two round lights over the table. These beauties are from DVI Canada. Incorporating touches of nature in an indoor space is just logical, as we all crave outdoor time. For this project we included a table made from raw suar wood. The bench seating NOV - DEC, 2016 | HOME DECOR AND RENOVATIONS 9
The kitchen is the heart of every home and a natural gathering place. No matter the size of your surface area, countertops should be on your splurge list. is perfect for a large family, and the rustic finish will help to disguise the family’s wear and tear. This stylish and functional table is from Artemano. The nature theme continues with table top faux plants, sourced from Bouclair as well as other final touches like pillows to pull the space together. Open concept requires a coherent look within the entire space, but rooms still need to have distinction. In the living room I used FLOR tiles to make it its own space, while still having it tie into the master space. I love that FLOR has the ability to replace a single tile should it be soiled or damaged. Simply put, splurge on the high visibility, high functionality items – you will never regret walking into a room you love!

LUXURY AND BEAUTY COME HOME
BEFORE
by Marie Soprovich Owner Aquarian Renovations LUXURY IS MORE THAN A BUCKET LIST. Everything necessary for the boundless joy and appreciation of life is here and in the beauty of these surroundings, a peaceful and gracious place to relax, unwind and recharge is found. This renovation story is about transforming a very dated 1980’s living space into modern classic elegance with a style that will transcend generations. This fresh, clean, bright and oh so chic Master bedroom, ensuite and walk-in closets is a very delightful space to live in. With the magnitude and transformative detail that went into this renovation, the story deserves to be told in stages… and so we start at the beginning of the day… where the creature comforts greet the homeowners with a delight and joy, gently restoring their energy for the fullness of another day. 16 YPNEXTHOME.CA
The original bathroom was a show stopper in the 80’s with the boxed-in jetted tub and deck area where extra towels and knickknacks could be stored. The shower in comparison was small and dark and used far more than the tub. This exactly highlights the difference between a 1980’s bathroom and the style and practicality of today’s ensuite. Homeowners have found that they use the shower most of the time and the big boxy tubs take up a lot of space for the usage it gets, not to mention the tank full of hot water it takes to fill that tub! Many homeowners are looking to create the reversal of the forgone style and have bigger showers with rain heads, body spray, steam showers, benches and niches for all the shower gels and body washes. The big tubs are being replaced with smaller soaker tubs for
those times they really can run a bath and relax. Heather is delighted, “The space has been redefined and we love it. Both Angus and I were surprised with just how much space we were able to reclaim by closing in the four windows, removing the pillars and the boxed-in tub. Our bathroom is spacious with a look and feel of a luxurious hotel bathroom. It is also amazing how little things, like the hot towel bar delights my husband. It feels like a spa. We love the shower amenities and enjoy the bright, clean look.” The transformation in this ensuite sparkles with newness and the Ella free standing tub, named after Ella Fitsgerald, takes centre stage. Heather is delighted with the intricacies of the design on this tub and how it matches the swirls and curls in chrome design and dazzling crystal light fixture overhead. “The
BEFORE
lighting is timeless and with the help of designers from Aquarian and Lori Elms Interiors, we really married the masculine and the feminine in this space. The design, the selection of product and the construction were superb and we are so delighted with the results. The design elements really work and they flow from one to another.” The elegance of the tub is highlighted against the clean white lines and enhanced even further by the timeless use of marble, which will never go out of style. The long linear drains that have become popular in the modern shower design are excellent for a number of reasons explain the Aquarian design team. “First off, it allows for the use of larger
tiles in the shower floor because the drain slants towards the large long trough drain and the days of having to have small little tiles and a centre drain are gone.” The shower has become a focal point in this ensuite and with a thoughtful selection of a beautiful wispy grey and white marble Penny Round accent tile, your eyes are drawn as it flows serenely from the ceiling through the shower into the room. This accent tile might be small, but its sophisticated touch pulls the tones together complementing the whiteness of the marble along with the details and care that have gone into the selection of all materials and finishing in this elegant ensuite renovation. The mirrors were also selected for their simple elegance and are not over powering. The “His and Her” dressing rooms also demonstrate a growing trend for space, organization and a design that reflects the personality and style of the
owners. The masculine dark colours highlight the impeccable style and organization of the man of the house. There is a place for everything and everything has its place. The rich wood tones are highlighted by the area for hanging suits, shirts, pants, even a section for golf shirts and of course shoes. Organization and easy access to the ensuite and a quiet side door to the main hall are perfect for that early morning work shift when the house is quiet. Her dressing room is pure feminine elegance. The Swarovski crystal door knobs shimmer and the opal white quartz counter tops with the Swarovski crystal chandelier are highlighted by the natural lighting in the day and shimmer with energy in the night. The most elegant choice of drapery enhances the window and these are just a few of the beautiful and sophisticated choices that make this room decidedly “hers”. The built-in NOV - DEC, 2016 | HOME DECOR AND RENOVATIONS 17

storage, the perfect places to hang those long evening gowns and the shorter more compact areas for the jackets, blouses and sweaters are an organizational dream. A women’s dressing room isn’t complete without well planned and accessible shoe and footwear storage units where all treasures are neatly and impeccably organized. Indeed, there is a place for everything. Each closet speaks to the owner – his masculine and hers feminine. Heather tells another story of how she had shared a closet with her husband and in the planning stages of the design, Tyler McNaughton, of Aquarian said, “Heather, you know, we can put a wall down here and make your own closet!” Heather continues to describe, “It was a labour of love getting this closet designed and finished just the way I envisioned it... and I love it! Such a bright, elegant room. Of all the places in the house where we renovated, this one brought the most challenges with product and sub trades, but Aquarian always said, we can do 18 YPNEXTHOME.CA
better and the results are amazing. This space is beautiful.” The master suite is a peaceful, spacious and even more elegantly designed and decorated room with natural light and plenty of space to move around in. With all the built in closet space there is no need for dressers in this room which adds to the calm and elegant simplicity. “This design frees the mind,” says interior designer Lori Elms. “Heather selected the finest of fabrics to complement the quality of the renovation and the colours she selected for the walls enhance the beauty of everything that has gone into this renovation. The results are truly stunning.” The TV and fireplace add to the comfort of the bedroom as do the recovered chair and ottoman. The beautiful end tables and the high end bedding will stand the test of time. The results are stunning. Heather shared, “Angus and I look forward to the weekend mornings where we wake up and enjoy a cappuccino and talk to each other in the calm ambiance of our beautiful surroundings. It’s so relaxing.” With impeccable planning, the
selection of precisely the right product to fit the new look and the quality, care and attention that went into this renovation, the homeowners along with the Aquarian Renovation and design team, have taken the invisible and made it visible… and oh what a transformation this has been. This portion of the renovation not only says, “Have a good night sleep!” to the homeowners, but also says, “Good morning!” and “Today is going to be an incredible new day!” As in a tour of a castle, the private chambers of the king and queen are often the most interesting part and a delight to be privy to. Here is another equal delight, the opportunity to see the luxurious transformation of this space. Follow along in the upcoming articles to see what the rest of the day brings for these homeowners as their entire home is made new again.

RENOVATION MONTH
makes an impact with community service work OCTOBER IS RENOVATION MONTH and to honour our industry and the Edmonton community, a group of forward thinking renovators and suppliers from the Canadian Homebuilders’ Association Edmonton Region (CHBA-ER) organized a second annual Community Service Day. Sydney Bond of Effect Home Builders, the special committee chair for this event reported that, “Once we announced this year’s project there was no shortage of people willing to do the work. Everyone was contacting me with people and donations and that made my job easy. It is remarkable how even though we come from different companies we were seamless as if we had worked together for years. The staff and residence at WINGS of Providence were so happy with the transformation of their space. The whole project was extremely fulfilling and we made a difference for this vulnerable group in our city.” Renovation Month is a Canada wide event and CHBA-ER renovators use this month to focus on a special public event that brings awareness to the work our industry is engaged in and ultimately help homeowners made the best possible decisions about their home renovation projects. Renovation committee Co-Chair and owner of Aquarian Renovations, Marie 20 YPNEXTHOME.CA
Soprovich adds that, “Community service work is a powerful way to make a statement about giving back to the community. Last year the committee focused work on the Pilgrim’s Hospice and I know that there are still people from our collective companies who are volunteering their time on weekends to help with small repairs, volunteering to work with patients and even working on fundraising committees. Volunteering and giving of our time and resources is such an import part of who we are and what we do. It makes us better people and better people run better companies and do their work with more heart. The trickle down effect is huge. We also have a variety of companies on a day like this who are working shoulder to shoulder and that builds relationships within the industry. This again is such a powerful example of how volunteerism and personal and professional leadership make the world a better place. If a home owner is reading this and wondering what renovation company to call for their project… the list of contributors to a successful project like this is a good place to start.” Rhonda, a manager at Wings of Providence responds with, “Wow, what a whirlwind of activity last week. It looks absolutely amazing here at WINGS. The moms in the group this morning all commented on the new look and said it looks like a whole new room. The Child Care is bright and fresh. The hallway looks 10 times bigger! The pergola outside is so modern – and the guys worked so hard through the blizzard on Friday to get it done. We bought the guys (Andy Bannock from Apollo Sunrooms and Ben from Benjamin Matthew contracting) lunch and one of them wouldn’t even stop working to eat – he was that determined to finish!” Rhonda sums it up when she says, “Thank you so much CHBA ER renovators and suppliers for the volunteer work you have done here at WINGS. What a difference a day can make. We can’t thank you enough.” WINGS of Providence shelter provides safe, transitional housing with client-centred supportive programs in order to give the necessary time to begin healing from the physical and emotional wounds of an abusive relationship. Throughout the six-month residency at WINGS, they participate in wrap-around services in addition to group and individual counselling. Topics discussed in group sessions help to foster parenting and life skills, as well as help mothers understand and better cope with the effects of family violence. These programs assist the family in working towards independence. Renovation month provides an ideal opportunity to bring together a team of professional renovators and their suppliers to help support this important community program.
In marking Renovation Month, it is important to acknowledge not only the efforts of this outstanding group but the potential this commitment to community service work holds for other greater Edmonton area service needs. Following are the renovators and suppliers involved in making this project such a success.

Tips and Tricks
A 380 mm
THE CODE By Michael Nyikes
A
Unless a basement bedroom has a door that leads directly to the exterior (as in the case of a stairwell or walk-out basement), or the basement is sprinklered, each bedroom must have at least one window that can be opened from the inside without the use of tools or technical knowledge. This window must provide an unobstructed opening with minimum area of 0.35 metres squared (3.77 square feet or 543 square inches), and have no dimension less than 380 mm (15 inches). See the drawings below for further clarification. If a window opens into a window-well (which many basement windows do), a clearance of at least 550 mm (approximately 22 inches) between the window and the wall of the window-well is required as per the provincial code. An awning-style window opening into a window-well may pose a challenge in maintaining this clear-ance due to the angle and direction it opens at, and it could interfere with the occupant’s ability to exit through the window-well in case of emergency. Therefore awning windows are not recommended for use in basement bedrooms. The required clearances must be maintained when the window is in the open position.
