Renovation INSPIRATION

O PEPPER RODRIGUEZ, EDITOR

ne of the main purposes of this magazine has always been to inspire homeowners to take up a hammer and saw and start working on their own home renovation project; to apply some elbow grease and fashion an abode that fit ones lifestyle. And the stories we have in this issue - particularly in the Alberta portion – are a well of inspiration. First off, we have Edmonton’s own DIY Mommy who took her considerable do-it-yourself skills and applied it to renovating a tiny lakeside cabin and make it into the family’s own dream vacation home, and a source of rental income as well. In Calgary, we spoke to a parttime handyman, Amadeo Giron Jr., to see how he was able to bring a vision for a more contemporary kitchen while saving a ton by doing most of the work

himself. Then we have design and décor pro, Trisha Isabey, give us tips in how she was able to mold the best of the Old World and the new to come up with a kitchen design that’s timeless. Thanks as well to everyone who came by our booth at the last Calgary Home+ Garden Show last March to say “hi” and to join our contest. I’ve forgotten how fun those shows are and interacting with others in the home improvement industry and the readers. That last show was a sure-fire indication that there is still a strong appetite for what this magazine offers – inspiration! We’ll see you again at the next one. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022 WINNER OF THE TRISHA ISABEY LIFESTYLE CONTEST – SIN NGA SINDY CHAN, CALGARY.

f home is where the heart is, then the kitchen is its heartbeat. As the epicentre of the home, the kitchen is where we gather, create, nourish and entertain. RENO + DECOR magazine is proud to announce the finalists in the Renovation

categories for the 2022 CHBA– Edmonton Region Awards of Excellence. Winners in these categories will be announced on April 2, 2022, at the Awards of Excellence in Housing gala. See page 74 to check out the renovators that have been recognized as the best in the industry. Congratulations to all the finalists! We hope everyone’s enjoying the magazine. home decor Presence, optimism & joy:

with fashion flair

by SALINA YARA HALABI

T

he world of fashion and interior design have always influenced one another. Whether it’s trends off the runway, or a style aesthetic that’s gaining popularity on social platforms, we often see themes and colour palettes seamlessly transition from the fashion industry over to home interior finishings and decor. 2022 is no exception. After two years of global-wide disruptions, the need to break free from feelings of gloom and escape a stagnant lifestyle have reached a peak. The result? An appetite for adventure and an optimistic outlook for brighter days ahead. If you’ve recently picked up a fashion magazine, or scrolled through Instagram, you’ll see fashion that not only demands attention, but also inspires. Now, it’s time to bring that sentiment into our personal spaces. Enter maximalism. At its root, maximalism is a reaction against minimalism (think: more is more!). It’s a call for vibrant colour on walls and furniture, décor with eclectic patterns, and details that have an underlying ode to the places we miss or have been longing to visit. It’s a welcomed design shift that’s focused on establishing presence and encouraging personal expression. And, ultimately, it helps ensure that the environments we spend the most time within are igniting our imagination and providing a sense of joy. Because, after all, home should always be our happiest escape.

t a time when we are more at home than ever before, find a bright spot in your day – at your door! Since most exterior paint colours are neutral, the entry door is the perfect place to draw the eye and use a pop of colour. (And if you ever change your mind, all you need is a can of paint and some elbow grease!) Homeowners that pick a bright colour are always very proud of their

entranceway – “people recognize it as the one with the red door!” states one homeowner – it makes your home totally unique and welcoming. With so much white or light stucco on homes, it is easy and impactful to add some colour.

Selecting a colour When you are selecting a colour, don’t worry about trends – focus on what will complement your home’s existing features, and what you like. Colours can look right on traditional and contemporary homes alike – a yellow door could suit a craftsman style home as much as it can suit a minimalist home. You can select a bright colour for the exterior, and a more neutral colour for the interior, called “split finish”. Just remember that the door opens into the home,

so ideally, the exterior colour will mesh with the interior as well. A good tip to tie the door into the windows is to use the same colour frame. For example, white window frames could tie into the white door frame, surrounding a classic red door panel. Or, to keep things simple, continue that classic red from the door panel onto the door frames as well. Doors often have a different look than windows, so it’s okay to do something different. When in doubt, consult a designer – they can be very reasonably priced for a quick consultation, and you can always tackle more projects together if you find there’s a good synergy.

Neutrals

Woodgrain stains

Glossy black doors are a huge trend right now. It also provides a great background for nice quality hardware, in a bright finish such as Satin Nickel. Also, if the home is already a bright colour, a neutral may be the right choice. One word of caution – if the exterior has a lot of white, which has probably changed in hue over time, steer away from using white again. It will never quite match, and you might be better off taking cues from the brown or grey roof instead. Playing off of the roof, or another feature, will help tie the colour scheme together.

Natural-looking woodgrain stains are a pretty safe option, if you are looking for something more special, without going overboard. Woodgrain doors are also a good option if you’d like something that will conceal dirt and dents as time wears on. The texture offers a better cover for imperfections than a smooth finish in one colour. Woodgrain also offers a lot of warmth and interest on an otherwise simple façade. Used equally on traditional and modern homes alike, it is a simple and impactful way to draw attention to the front door.

Small kitchen

ideas

Slammed for space in your kitchen? Don’t fret. “In a small space, it’s all about finding the balance between the perfect function and the meaningful beauty that surrounds you,” says Richard Ouellette of Les Ensembliers. R+D asked for his top three tips for working with a petite cooking space. 1. The best way to make sure your small space functions the way you want it to is to start with a well laid-out plan. There are some things that simply won’t work in a smaller kitchen. Make a list of your must-haves and work with a professional to ensure every inch is maximized. 2. Create zones in your space to give you different experiences and moments throughout your day. 3. Choosing the right appliances for your space and needs is critical. I love the JennAir Urban Living collection specifically for this reason. The Urban Living series appliances are built with the same exceptional luxury details, functions and quality as a regular-size appliance. Spring and summer are around the corner and we are ready to begin enjoying our outdoor spaces. We call it “living inside out” — making your outdoor spaces as fabulous as your indoors. In preparation for the great weather, below is a checklist to help create your outdoor entertaining oasis:

Moonstone

Next, let’s talk tile… There are so many options available these days for tile, but it’s most important to make sure you always use a tile that is specifically made for exterior use. Opt for full-bodied colour porcelain tiles such as Ciot’s Moonstone Collection, available in a variety of colours and fascinating finishes and textures. Looking for something fun? Check out our large assortment of patterned porcelain tiles that are inspired by encaustic cement tiles. They are a great way to add style and charm to your exterior kitchen backsplash, while having the added benefit of porcelain’s durability with easy maintenance and no sealing required. Why not refresh your pool with a vibrant mosaic made for an outdoor application? A trim of mosaic along the edge of the pool is a great way to add a burst of colour to your space. It is also a good idea to consider a porcelain paver, such as Ciot’s Stoncrete and X-Rock Collections to complete your look and create a unique pattern in between your greenery.

Trees by MARK & BEN CULLEN

T

here is a well-known leadership theory that says selecting one word to be your focus for the year will create clarity, passion, power and lifechanging impact. With this in mind, our word for 2022 is: Trees. Trees are the world’s most advanced breathing machines, a miracle of nature that has not been matched for efficiency and economy by anything created by humankind. We need more of them. We have all experienced the many health benefits of getting out into nature or ‘forest bathing’ – breathing clean air, watching wildlife, birds and insects while we enjoy the shade and the quiet. But most importantly, trees efficiently store carbon emissions that help to fight our climate change emergency. While it has always been this way, the number of trees is in decline. We need to act fast to save these miracles of nature and ensure a safe future for people and the planet. Design trends are finding inspiration in nature, sustainability and bringing the outdoors, inside. Perhaps you’ve been considering a landscape project for your home, be it a balcony project or a more ambitious endeavour. We also have some expansion plans. On November 11, 2022, the last tree of the Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign will be planted, marking the completion of a project that has created living tributes to Canadians

who have or who are serving during times of conflict. Seven years and $12 million later, more than two million trees will be planted by this date. This initiative has inspired us to expand our mission through our new national charity, Canadian Trees for Life. Launched in 2021, with $2 million in seed funding from Natural Resources Canada through the federal government’s 2 Billion Trees Committment program, Trees for Life wants to continue the momentum started last year, right across Canada. We planted more than 270,000 trees in 2021, and we are aiming to double that number in 2022. Trees for Life’s primary objective is to mobilize community-based tree-planting initiatives across Canada. Using our insights and networks, Trees for Life will provide Canadian tree-planting organizations with the tools, resources, and horticultural trade networks to enable them to grow existing tree-planting initiatives, implement new ones, and educate their communities about the value of trees. If you haven’t got your one-word focus for the year, consider ‘trees’, for all the life-changing impact they bring.

Join us in assisting communities across Canada to dramatically increase their tree canopies:

K

itchen design is an everevolving process. It embraces functionality, balance, the perfect layout, smart storage solutions, proper lighting and ventilation and the right cabinetry choice, all while honouring style and

esthetics. Exceptional design is an aspiration for most kitchen designers, and just as important, are wheelchair accessible kitchens built with ADA compliance in mind. While ADA-compliant kitchens have advanced over the years, the reality is, there currently are more

kitchens that don’t require ADA compliance than those that do. But with the senior population projected to increase and aging in place a viable option, we anticipate a shift in the kitchen design industry toward even more advancements to cater to that need.

In an effort to address that demand, designing with accessibility in mind is becoming an important consideration in residential architecture and design. In addition, kitchen furniture and cabinet manufacturers and suppliers are introducing innovative and cutting-edge systems to support and accommodate this growth.

What makes a great accessible kitchen design?

Photo: Fisher paykal

An ideal layout should have a lot of maneuvering space and take into consideration all the needs of the user. You want to avoid areas that have cross routes and parallel surfaces, and limit travel distances between functional zones. Kitchen styles to consider are the single row (if you are limited for space), and L-shaped kitchen, a U-shaped kitchen, an L-shaped kitchen with an island, and a semi-island with at least 60 inches minimum of accessible space between counters and opposing sides.

FUNCTIONAL ZONES Functional zones facilitate the process of prepping and making meals. It includes countertops and food prep zones, food storage, tableware and cutlery storage, a clean-up area, as well as cooking zones. The goal is to eliminate any barriers that can interfere with being able to

THE PERFECT LAYOUT

comfortably work in the kitchen. Equally important, the design needs to consider the user’s motor skills in relation to their preferred movement if they are using a wheelchair, a walker or other mobility device. Whether right-handed or left-handed, they tend to use their dominant hand to use their device and the opposite hand to perform tasks such as opening drawers and moving things around.

ADAPTABILITY This kind of design involves rethinking how a kitchen functions. That means adjusting sink and countertop heights; installing induction countertops and motorized cabinet systems; addressing knee and toe guidelines, incorporating appliances with mobility enhancements such as pull-out dishwasher drawers; incorporating smart storage solutions; and installing flooring that is as flat as possible with few grade changes. While ADA compliance takes centre stage, you don’t need to compromise

in style and esthetics. Final finishes such as cabinetry, tile backsplash, and flooring still have a role to play in the design scheme. There is ample room to add character and texture, colour and to play with tones.

OPTIMAL LIGTING, VENTILATION + AUDIBILITY The perfect mixture of ambient, task and accent lighting enhances the kitchen design while providing functional capability and access within the space. For those with a level of hearing loss, audibility is key and can be addressed by installing timer buzzers and smoke alarms to assist the user. Depending on the electrical code of your region, installing switches and receptacles within the cabinets and drawers that also store appliance can provide efficient access and use. We are watching the development of accessible kitchen design and look forward to the innovative solutions that designers and architects come up with.

CREATE A WORKABLE HOME OFFICE, EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU DON’T HAVE THE SPACE

W

by BRODY ROBINSON

hether you’re new to working from home or have done it since the beginning of the pandemic, a home office has become a necessity for people just like you. Your office could currently be in your spare bedroom or in a small corner of your apartment; it doesn’t matter if you have a designated area or you are working on the kitchen table, now is an ideal time to update your space. At this year’s National Home Show: The Big One, you will find inspiration for your home office and other renovation and space-saving needs.

workable home office, even in the tightest of spaces.

The right location The ideal home office is one that is in a space where you won’t be distracted. Privacy is vital if you find yourself at home all day with your family. The right location is key, as is making sure your office has a door. Shutting out distractions and shutting in work allows you the needed disconnect between work and life. Each can be enjoyed, but make sure to keep them separate.

The right lighting When it comes to a home office, the right light is crucial. Natural light is the best – many famous authors try to situate themselves near a window to use natural light, encouraging creativity and increasing productivity. With the pandemic keeping so many of us indoors, try to let in some natural light and take in the outdoors while you work.

Ergonomic-friendly furniture “With the new normal of parents working from home, and online school for students, the home office needs an upgrade,” says Denise Hayward, show director for the National Home Show: The Big One. “You may think you don’t have the space for a home office – but think again!” To help you get inspired, here are some tips to help you create a

Whether it’s the kind of chair you buy, the height of your desk, or your computer setup, your home office should have ergonomic components. If a home office is becoming your new normal, don’t be afraid to splurge. Your back will thank you for it!

Crafty and convertible Make the most of a tight situation by using convertible furniture

and decor. Your space can be aesthetically pleasing and great for extra storage. Create an area that’s transformable enough to use for both work and everyday life, making it fit your needs. Get creative with desks that fold into walls, modular shelving or seats that function as storage boxes for a multi-purpose and multi-functional space.

Make it your own Your home office is still your office and should represent you. Choose a colour scheme that matches your overall aesthetic and you will look forward to sitting at your desk every day. Add those plants that bring some nature in or an animal print to spice up your space. This is your home office – make it your own with whatever makes you happy!

Check out the National Home Show: The Big One, April 15-24, 2022 at Toronto’s Enercare Centre for more ideas on how to transform your space and make your home office work for you. Clean lines, traditional flooring and hits

of bold colour breathe new life into this home

W

hen Jude Kamal and her design team at Sansa Interiors met with her clients, they quickly relized the builder-grade home needed a serious contemporary update. The 3,000-sq.-ft. home had clean lines but outdated interiors.

APRIL/MAY 2022

So, Kamal and her team quickly got to work brainstorming a fresh and modern design scheme. “We knew that functionality was their top concern, so we approached their house renovation in layers. We brought in materials and finishes that would complement the function of

the space, while still making it feel brand new; this enabled us to stay within budget,” says Kamal. With pandemic restrictions in full effect, it became a challenge for the design team to get permits, find specific finishes, and have crews into the house to complete the renovation.

“We had this

grand

vision of a massive custom sectional sofa that could seat all of our clients’ guests.”

“Even though the permits forced the project to be delayed by a month, we were still able to get creative in how we phased out the construction to keep the delays at a minimum,” says Kamal. “COVID-19 may have made the process more challenging, but it didn’t affect the quality of the end result.”

For this project, Kamal and her team drew inspiration from Moroccan architecture (since their clients appreciated its simplicity and organic feel) and modern design. They gutted the home’s inside while honouring the original architecture, which allowed the rooms to flow better.

renoanddecor.com

43

In addition, they kept the colour palette neutral and introduced light wood tones and minimalist-inspired furniture to create a modern and streamlined home. In the kitchen, they introduced a bold cobalt blue, echoing a typical shade found in Moroccan architecture. A more modern, subtle blue was used in the laundry room. Kamal and her team got creative when designing the perfect space for their clients to entertain and throw large parties. “We had this grand vision of a massive custom sectional sofa that could seat all of our clients’ guests. We were told it was impossible to build what we were trying to achieve, but we refused to take no for an answer,” says Kamal.

Through various experiments with cardboard test models, the team was able to come up with a way to create a large enough sectional that was sturdy in build and could still fit through the door. “As a final touch, we worked closely with the millworker to detail this perfect custom sectional that would fit seamlessly into our clients’ space, using a fabric that was both easily cleaned and had a high thread count so it could withstand heavy use,” Kamal explains. By prioritizing crucial rooms, Kamal and her team were able to create a beautiful and functional family home for their clients. For more information, visit sansainteriors.com

COOKING UP

FIRE SAFETY IN THE KITCHEN

The kitchen is known as the heart of the home for a reason. It’s the place we gather to share meals and create memories every day. But did you know cooking is a leading cause of home fires and home-fire deaths?* Before the next time you turn on the oven, stove or other cooking appliance, make sure you follow these fire safety tips to keep your home and family protected *Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners

ESTABLISH KID-SAFE ZONES Never leave cooking unattended and designate a “kidfree zone” of at least one metre around the stove and any area where hot food or drinks are being prepared. Create a space away from any kitchen appliances where kids can play freely while still being supervised. Make sure to keep knives and appliance cords away from edges for when young children do enter the kitchen.

CLEAN THE APPLIANCES Food splashes and splatters all the time, but don’t leave the mess. Keep your appliances clean of grease and food debris that could potentially catch flame, and don’t forget to clean your oven at least every three to six months.

AVOID POTENTIAL BURNS Cook on the back burners of the stove whenever possible and keep all pot and pan handles turned inward and away from the stove edge to avoid bumping them. To prevent hot food or steam from burning your skin, always stir and lift pan lids away from you. Keep oven mitts and potholders near the stove so you can quickly access them when needed and remember to place hot items in the centre of counters on non-slip placemats.

INSTALL AND TEST SMOKE ALARMS

KEEP A FIRE SUPPRESSANT ON HAND

The National Fire Protection Association recommends protecting your home by installing smoke alarms on every level, including the basement and inside every bedroom. Alarms should be tested every month and the batteries changed every six months. For convenient protection, upgrade to First Alert 10-year sealed battery alarms to eliminate battery replacements and late-night battery chirps for a decade. Even with 10-year alarms installed, it’s still important to regularly test them.

Always have a fire extinguishing device in a close and easily accessible location when cooking. Keeping one on hand is important but knowing how to use it makes all the difference when a fire does happen and every second counts. For an easy-to-use solution, the First Alert EZ Fire Spray features a lightweight spray-can design with no pins or levers – just point and spray.

Spruce up your space with spring-inspired floral wallpaper

N

o doubt you are familiar with the classic spring saying, “April showers, bring May flowers.” We hold on to the hope that by May, boom, everything will be in bloom, and suddenly all is right in our world. But don’t you wish you could capture that special spring feeling at home all year round? Besides your budding plant family, incorporating floral wallpaper will give you that springtime look, toute l’année. When choosing the right floral wallpaper, remember to select a motif that you won’t tire of. Although wallpaper has come a long way in terms of installation (hello, peel and stick!), it still takes time and effort to hang correctly. So, it’s a good idea to get a sample piece before you commit to an entire wall. And, speaking of walls, remember, less is more when working with florals. For example, you may (in a burst of spring fever) have a desire to wallpaper an entire room. While this is definitely a bold statement, you may find it overwhelming over time. Choosing to create one feature wall in a space will give you the look you are after without going over the top. Today you can find a variety of floral wallpaper to choose from in different styles and price points. Here are some of our favourites.

magine it: the smell of popcorn, the muted whispers and finally, brilliant images and striking sound filling the room as the movie starts. You can see yourself in the comfort of your living room, watching with friends and family and then suddenly, you wake up and realize it’s only a dream. You can turn that dream into a reality, and your living room into a home theatre, by including a state-of-the-art, large-screen TV from Hisense and discover a whole new way to watch watch movies, listen to music and play games. Hisense, one of the top five television brands in the world and the top-selling TV in China, has just released its L9G Series 4K Smart TriChroma Laser TV, and it’s the kind of cutting-edge technology you’ve been dreaming of. And, what’s really great about it is that it won’t matter where you decide to set it up. With its anti-glare technology, the sunlight from your floor-to-ceiling windows or the glow

from the lamps on an end table won’t interfere or degrade your viewing experience. The ALR screen blocks more than 85 per cent of glare, so all you see are crisp, bright images, no matter where you are in the room. “The L9G is an exceptional TV, with the most true-to-life images to be seen on a screen,” says Lindsay Takashima, vicepresident of sales, consumer electronics, from Hisense Canada. “The result is an image that projects images on your screen the way the director intended us to see them in a theatre-like way, but now, we can do it from the comfort of our home.” Seamlessly integrated into any decor, the TV allows you and your family to enjoy your individual activities, whether it’s intense gaming, watching sports, or getting absorbed in fast-paced action movies. The audio component is amazing, with speakers that push sound to every corner of the room, creating an unparalleled 3D audio experience — you really will think you’re in a movie theatre.

as the long-standing trend of the all-white kitchen finally fizzled out? I’ve recently seen some bolder trends bubbling up to the surface, as is the case in this dramatic kitchen design, which became a showpiece in a brand-new build that I recently undertook with my team. The

ask: A sophisticated space, anything but common white or neutral. Here’s where we went with it. We were starting from the ground up, and as a designer, that’s an ideal scenario, giving us complete flexibility with our design direction. As with all our projects, our clients – in this case a young professional couple with two young children – guided the concept

for the space. They were big on entertaining and, like the thoughtful hosts they were, they wanted their space to make a big splash. At the same time, their busy lives demanded practicality and integrated ease. We looked to high-contrast elements to make the statement our clients were hoping for. We maintained the light, contemporary

colour palette of a gentle hint of grey, and dressed it up with high-contrast black elements. These included the dark-veined marble countertops and backsplash, and an amazing dark obsidian range with chrome inserts that echoed the hue of the central island – an instant focal point and natural gathering place within this open-concept kitchen and living area. When planning your kitchen (and hopefully you’re working with a professional designer), choose your focal point first. Then, plan everything else around it. In most kitchens, the main focus is the range hood and island, which anchor the entire composition, and are organic attractions from both a style and function perspective. Choose something that stands out, but still aligns with the overall esthetic of the space. The kitchen island requires some special consideration, since it’s a central element, physically and in terms of use. Determine what the primary purpose of your island will be in your kitchen, since it can serve many different functions, from food preparation, dining and entertaining, to storage. Not only will this inform the specs, but it will affect other aspects of your kitchen as well. In this kitchen design, we maximized the island by satisfying all three. Our clients requested a raised breakfast bar to visually conceal the cooking clutter at counter level

tip: If your island is dark, try to use a lighter floor tile to create contrast and make the island “pop.”

when entertaining guests. This allows visitors to sit and still contribute to the conversation, removed from the mess. While we’re talking function, storage is a recurring theme in this kitchen design, and this was a high priority for us. The kitchen can get cluttered quickly with all the action it sees on a daily basis. To get ahead of the mess, we included features such as built-in spice racks, pull-out garbage bins, extradeep pots-and-pans drawers tucked underneath the cooktop, and a Lazy Susan in corner cabinets that maximize every inch while keeping kitchen essentials conveniently on hand. Last, but not least, lighting was an important consideration – natural and artificial. Aside from functional

necessity, lighting also creates ambience and highlights thoughtful features. Avoid blocking natural light that streams through windows and doorways, keeping sightlines open. Then, get creative with your lighting plan. Along with standard pot lights, add pendants, under- and in-cabinet lighting and even wall sconces, to add interest. In this kitchen, we went against traditional upper cabinets windowside for that very reason, opting instead for a simple stone ledge. A new kitchen is a big investment. Ensure you’re working with a professional designer so all your wants and needs are “baked in” the design plan.

tips & tricks

Deciding whom to

HIRE

Once you have interviewed renovators, checked their references and received written price quotes from those you are interested in hiring, it’s time to decide who will be doing your job Renovators should be allowed adequate time to prepare a bid for your project, and you must ensure that each renovator is working with the same plans and specifications. For all but the simplest projects, you should expect the renovator to present their bid in person, so that they can discuss each aspect with you an answer any question you may have.

1

Decide the importance of each aspect of your evaluation. While overall price is important, it is only one factor. Many homeowners who have successfully completed major home renovations speak about the importance of “peace of mind” – working with a renovator they trusted and felt confident in.

6

2 Once you have met with the renovators who are bidding on your job, you should review each set of bid documents carefully before deciding who to hire.

5

If you have a particularly strong sense of confidence in one of the renovators, they are probably your best choice, even if their price is not the lowest. In the end, you should choose the renovator based on your sense of the overall value they can provide to you.

Compare every aspect of their bids – the description of the work, specifications (materials and products), price and allowances, deposit and payment milestones, project schedule and any additional recommendations or ideas for your project.

Review the information you collected during and after your initial impressions of each renovator, and what their previous customers had to say about them.

Before family to enjoy. The website is every homemaker’s friend. It seems she took her own DIY décor advice and put it to practice when she and her husband, Sean – a general contractor and electrician who owns The Greenovator Corp. – made the decision to renovate their own cabin by the lake. The cabin – located on the shores of Spring Lake, less than an hour west of Edmonton – became a dream project for the pair. The Little Lake House as they called it has become the family’s vacation home, and one that also brings in extra income as a rental. Christina says it was a dilapidated, little cabin when they first saw it in October 2020, but it still managed 60

to steal their hearts. “The cabin was in the most beautiful location on the shores of serene Spring Lake, but it needed some care. In October 2020, we purchased the property, and shortly thereafter demolition began!” Today, the Little Lake House is a two-bedroom, one-bathroom home fashioned in a modern coastal style, that sleeps up to five people. The cabin is heated for year-round use and has been renovated from the studs up in 2021. A real pandemic-project if there ever was one.

It was a labour of love for Christina and Sean. “From the fresh, white shiplap ceilings capped with crown moulding to the accents of brushed gold and grey-blues – the style of our lake house is modern yet calming. The view of the lake from the open-concept kitchen and living room is our favourite thing about this home,” she says. We sat down with Christina to chat about how they came about with their Little Lake House vacation home, with a specific focus on how renovating the kitchen came about.

R+D: What was the biggest challenge in renovating the kitchen of the lake house? Christina: It’s a tiny kitchen and breakfast nook combo, so it was challenging to come up with a new, more modern layout that functioned as both a kitchen and dining area. We ended up landing on a vintage eat-in style kitchen and I absolutely love how it turned out!

R+D: Is there a difference when planning the design for a vacation home and the actual home? Christina: There sure is. With a vacation rental, creating simple spaces to relax in is key whereas in a full-time residence creating storage is important. We also chose finishes that were extremely durable and easy to clean because we knew our cabin would see lots of different guests and need to be cleaned often.

R+D: How did you approach the design for the lake home’s kitchen? What was the main thing you set out to accomplish for this portion of the project? Christina: We wanted the kitchen to feel more open and more modern.

Since the home is small, we also wanted to make the room feel bigger through the use of light colours and a simple design.

R+D: Can you give us the details of the features you used for the kitchen renovation? What kind of countertop? What kind of cabinetry, backsplach, flooring, etc? Christina: This was a very budgetfriendly kitchen renovation! The counters are laminate marble-look countertops from IKEA, the cabinets are stock cabinets from The Home Depot, the backsplash is shiplap painted with a durable kitchen & bath paint, and the flooring is luxury vinyl plank from Diving Flooring.

R+D: How much was the total cost for the work on the lake home, how big of a portion did the kitchen renovation take? Christina: The whole renovation was about $50,000, and it would have been at least double that if we hadn’t been able to do the labour ourselves. The kitchen renovation cost was about $7,000, but we did get some items like the cabinets, trim and

flooring sponsored as we featured them on my YouTube channel, blog & social channels. We also installed used appliances to save even more money.

R+D: What advice can you give to people wanting to do a similar undertaking? Christina: Do your research and plan ahead! Renovations almost always take more time and money than planned. Check out your community’s short term rental bylaws to see what’s allowed. Source all of your items well in advance because everything is taking a lot longer to find right now.

R+D: By the way, did the lakeside location play a role in how you plan your design? Christina: The lake did help me choose the colour scheme (white, blue & gold) and the feel (relaxing modern coastal) of the cabin. I wanted it to compliment the location & make our guests feel cozy and peaceful. Mixing your

styles by C. MARIE HEBSON

Mixing style genres isn’t easy - but when done right, your home feels more custom and personalized to your tastes. I learned the different style genres from Ethan Allen out of New York, NY. Basically any furniture frame, colour, fabric or picture can be tweaked to fit within your style genre by knowing the rules and when you can break them. Below are four different kitchens I’ve designed over the years where I’ve combined two different styles. Its always important to add those whimsical touches in statues, cool light fixtures or art. When looking to personalize your space, call Marie from interiorsBYDESIGNinc.

The Look: Contemporary Minimalist Here we paired a more traditional palette in walnut, copper, chrome and navy blue. The affect was truly lovely, warm and inviting. Texture is critical in creating that warm inviting vibe.

The look: Mediterranean Modern I selected more traditional casegoods, paired with more modern upholstered furnishings. The fit and finishes were all pulled from this gorgeous Alga Green Quartzite Countertop. This was one of the first lottery show homes to showcase a mix of cabinetry in all white for the kitchen, stained wood for the bathrooms. Designed in 2010 this home is still a show stopper. 62

The Look: East Coast Cottage Mixing west coast aesthetics with east coast cottage isn’t easy - but we achieved that here by ensuring that the black painted cabinetry was light and bright through the use of unique light fixtures and bright wallpaper and artwork. This is such a fun vibrant home, the bright pops of colour are a sure winner to Alberta’s long cold winters.

The Look: Modern Farmhouse with a Boho Vibe Softening the whites to a soft off-white, paired with rich natural wired brushed oak and recycled black glass backsplash, this kitchen was such a hit with both young and old alike. It is timeless. The Boho came in with faux fur furnishings and unique light fixtures

Sweat equity

PAYS OFF

T

by PEPPER RODRIGUEZ he best equity is sweat equity – ask any home DIYer. But when it comes to renovating a kitchen, it helps to really know what you’re doing and sometimes even that might not be enough. Amadeo Giron Jr. had been used to doing his own home renovations, he can be described as a semi-pro handyman. He doesn’t do it full-time, as he is employed as a piping designer for an oil and gas firm. Mainly, he just does it to help out. He has done all the decks and fencing in all their previous homes,

not to mention for their friends. He has also worked on developing the basements of their homes – the present one and two of their previous ones – largely by himself – installing everything from walls to ceilings and floors. But when it came time to renovate their kitchen, he knew he was going to need more than just willing hands to help. Amadeo, his wife Raquel and daughter, Patricia, have been living in their northwest Calgary home for the better part of 15 years. Built in the early 2000s, the Girons had fully

maximized the potential of their twostorey home with walk-out basement. The backyard is a great entertaining place, the basement has become a stylish and comfy entertainment/gym/ home office combo. Their kitchen – though large and spacious with a corner walk-in pantry – was beginning to show its age. The original kitchen had an angled centre island topped with black granite and plenty of kitchen counterspace. Reddish brown hardwood flooring gave it a dark patina that worked well with the traditional Craftsman style that was popular in the early 2000s.

g n i r u D They had already once attempted to renovate the kitchen on their own by repainting what was originally maple cabinets to white and retaining the black granite countertops and appliances. But they knew they had to do something more drastic, as they were looking to update to a more contemporary look. “Renovating the kitchen seemed less expensive and less stressful than moving to a new home, besides we like the community we live in,” Raquel tells Reno + Decor. Amadeo, “Nyoy” to his friends, knew doing the entire kitchen renovation may be beyond even his considerable prowess to do by himself. So they did their due diligence and shopped around the kitchen renovation companies in Calgary.

The average cost to change the kitchen cabinetry and the countertops plus most of the appliances hovered just under the $50,000 mark. But they found out that by doing the dismantling of the old kitchen themselves, they can save up to $17,000. “We also found out we could make a couple of hundred bucks by selling the old cabinetry and granite on Facebook Marketplace. We didn’t even realize that was a thing,” Amadeo says. So, he got down to it. Every spare moment he could get away from his full-time job for the next three weeks was spent working on the kitchen. The cabinetry was the first to go down. “That was the most challenging part, we didn’t realize how heavy those were and my wife and I were finally able to bring it down. But my

back ached for days.” He then had to take down the drywall and install new electric wiring for the new appliance configuration they were planning. “That’s where I needed more help from my electrician friends to help me figure out the required amperage,” he says. The granite removal, he left to the professionals. “That was going to be way too heavy to remove by ourselves.” They did also find buyers for those reused online too. They did end up hiring Ekko Cabinetry Ltd to complete the renovation - installing the white, glossy-finish cabinets. Crown Granite & Marble Inc did the countertops and House of Mirrors was hired for the backsplash. Other than those, most of the initial work they did themselves. renoanddecor.com

65

Before That included reworking the flooring around the kitchen to follow the contour of the new centre island. “It’s a good thing our builder left plenty of spares of the original planks we used when we had the house built,” he says. Finally, all was set for the cabinet installers to come in. They chose a glossy white cabinetry that extended all the up to their nine-foot ceilings on the main floor. “Our old cabinetry left maybe a foot of space between the ceiling. The new design allows for more storage, and looks way more stylish,” Raquel says. They still chose stainless steel appliances, but they are now wall-mounted making for a more seamless look. The white quartz countertops further emphasized the stylishness of the kitchen. With the tall windows and high ceilings they already have in the 66

main floor, it worked to accentuate the room and make it seem larger than it is. Challenges remained - the glass backsplash they chose to replace the old tile one has not arrived yet due to the prevailing global supply chain issues. But the new kitchen they envisioned is already taking shape. “After months of not being able to enjoy a properly homecooked meal, we were finally able to cook our favourite Filipino dishes again,” Raquel says. The long and the short of it is that they were able to accomplish the remodelling of their kitchen more economically than they would have otherwise had. Maybe marrying a semi-pro handyman pays for itself, Raquel jokes. Nyoy laughs along, hoping renovating the bathrooms won’t be happening too soon. His advice: doing the grunt work themselves may be more economical, but even then one should really have to know what they are getting in to when undertaking a total kitchen renovation. Otherwise, the money you hope to save can quickly end up costing more.

Kitchen

trends for 2022

T

he kitchen is the heart of any home. Not only does it serve our utilitarian needs, but it also doubles as a home office, family zone for homework and catching up at the end of the day, as well as a key area for entertaining. If you’re looking to renovate this multi-functional, multifaceted room, then let’s take a look at some of the trends you’ll be seeing this year and beyond.

Colour From customized storage solutions to coffee stations and bar areas for entertaining, kitchens have evolved into highly stylized spaces that reflect our personality and the way we live. When it comes to cabinets, colour is definitely the way to go. The standout colour this year is blue. Whether it’s a daring shade of navy, cobalt or teal, blue is popping up in kitchens everywhere. Though some of these shades are quite bold, blue is still a colour that is both comfortable and serene; as long as it’s not overdone.

Wood accents Beautiful marbles, quartz and warm wood tones are still a mainstay in our kitchens. Wood flooring is a definite, but so is adding wood accents in other areas of your space. A beautiful wood with a natural grain for a large island countertop can be a wonderful centrepiece, as can a beautifully grained walnut as an accent detail to portions of cabinetry. Accenting your bold-toned blue cabinetry with touches of a warm gold for your hardware will make it stand out even more.

Backsplash When it comes to your kitchen backsplash, I’m a big lover of Zellige tile. This is a wonderful tile, most often square in shape and highly lustrous with a pattern of irregular lines that

evokes a desirous hand-made vibe. The tile is simplistic and calm, yet offers so much texture and interest in a space without being a prominent pattern.

Eclectic vibe Blending different eras creates a unique look, so don’t hesitate to introduce vintage finds or antique collectibles to your more contemporary kitchen. Find some great salvaged barstools and re-cover them in a funky bold pattern. A great antique cabinet can be painted a trendy colour and turned into a bar in a modern space. Whichever way you decide to design and accessorize your kitchen, this is definitely the year to inject some uniqueness into your space and make it all your own!

Modern

Meets Old

O

ld world” and modern – at first glance a contradiction of characteristics, and also my objective as the designer on this kitchen project. This kitchen was designed for an active family with kids, dogs and high expectations for a space that combines classic European charm with modern conveniences. Oh, and it had to be durable (remember: kids and dogs). Generally speaking, there’s a lot riding on the kitchen design. Designing this space can often be a huge investment, and to be honest, not always the easiest process. However, most would agree that with a renovated or updated kitchen is often topping the list our home musthaves today. Since the kitchen sets the aesthetic tone for the rest of the space, it is often the starting point for the rest

of the home. But great kitchen design is more than just skin deep. From a technical perspective, the success of the design directly correlates to how smoothly (or strenuously) your “everyday” goes. This kitchen project has it all, and arguably the best part? It’s built right in. Here’s our recipe for success. The homeowner was a key inspiration behind the design, in terms of style and function. She loves to cook and entertain, so the kitchen fittingly focussed on the LaCanche oven, for its practical uses and its amazing aesthetic value. You might not realize it at first glance, but with convenient arm’s reach to the right is a huge double fridge, softened with beautiful panelling that matches the cabinetry. We further prioritized beautiful function in the form of custom cabinets, the central island and a dedicated pantry area.

renoanddecor.com

69

The island is another common kitchen focal point, thanks to its central positioning and multiple practical purposes, whether it’s used for food prep, serving or dining. Once you’ve identified your primary (and secondary) use of the island, ensure it’s built to accommodate your needs. For example, an integrated wine fridge; a shelf for serving-ware and table linens; or storage for cutting boards, knives and spices. To top it off (literally) we finished this island showpiece with a real honed marble countertop. Marble is porous and can scratch, but in our case this characteristic worked in our favour. The homeowner welcomed the stories and memories told over time by a natural patina. When doing custom cabinets, I like extended uppers to help maximize every inch of available space. And as I’ve learned, storage space is always in demand. Typically, that spot between your cabinets and ceiling are left blank, empty and wasted. What if you could add an extra cabinet shelf to every

70

RENO + DECOR |   APRIL/MAY 2022

cabinet? While the area beneath the ceiling can be a bit harder to reach, it’s an ideal place to tuck away occasional or seasonal items. To balance the clients’ functional needs and aesthetic goals, we used a combination of open and closed cabinets and shelves, which supply valuable storage space while adding visual interest and helping tell the homeowner’s story. We finished the cabinets in a natural colour palette that echoes a more traditional aesthetic. This particular kitchen afforded us the luxury of space, so we indulged in a Butler’s Pantry, accessed through an arched doorway that was designed to feel like it has a history behind it. Ample storage, durable countertops and a locally sourced stone backsplash coordinate with the authentic feel of the connected kitchen.

The overall palette was inspired by nature, and features wood tones with “watery” touches of blue, green and soft white. The palette flows from the kitchen into the adjoining open-concept living area. Retractable glass doors provide a

seamless transition from the kitchen to the outdoor living area. This kitchen satisfied the homeowners cravings for a space that started out as a design dichotomy, but ended up beings exactly what they wanted and needed.

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and the cookware and small appliances complete the scene. They can be as functional or as stylish as you want and they are a great way to add a splash of colour or spice up the style in this most used part of the home. We went around local Calgary and Edmonton kitchen stores to see what they have to offer.
