The nearest hospitals are the Health Sciences Centre downtown and Concordia Hospital, plus the family health centre.
The most common ways to get around the main routes are by vehicle and bus. There are 14 bus routes and major roads to follow, but the side roads and pathways that follow the river and through residential blocks are ideal for foot traffic and cyclists. The airport is past the city centre, at least 13 kilometres away.

WINTER CHEER FOR YOUR HOUSEPLANTS
With the days now noticeably shorter, we turn to our interior greenscapes to lift our spirits through the dark days of winter.
While houseplant companions cheer up our homes, they too are feeling the effects of shorter days. Nobody understands this better than Darryl Cheng, author of The New Plant Parent. An engineer who has studied the relationship between houseplants and light, Cheng writes: “The impact of light cannot be overstated: No special fertilizer, distilled water or humidifiers will improve a houseplant in a poorly lit environment.”
Here are our top tips for ensuring the well-being of your cherished plants through the winter:
LIGHT
Light is the big one during this limited-daylight time of year. Placing your tropical plants in south-facing, unobstructed windows is ideal, but there is also nothing wrong with adding artificial light. However, take note: Cheng advises that many agricultural-grade grow lights are likely overkill. “Most of the tropicals people are growing as houseplants have a lower light demand than the high-yielding vegetable crops those lights are built for,” he writes. “If you have a regular white LED bulb, your plants will get enough spectrum at enough
intensity to survive.” Bear in mind this supplemental LED lighting is lower intensity than the sun, which can be compensated for with longer exposure — up to 12 hours a day won’t hurt — and with the efficiency of LED lights, there shouldn’t be too much cause for concern on your hydro bill.
LESS MOISTURE
The biggest cause for houseplant failure is too much love in the form of watering. Waterlogged potting soil will lead to root rot. If your plants are looking yellow or black and wilted, check to see if the soil is too wet by pushing your finger into the soil about three centimetres deep. Remove the dead foliage and repot into fresh, dry soil if necessary.
MORE MOISTURE
Many of the tropical plants we enjoy in our home are native to humid, rainforest-like environments – basically the opposite of our dry Canadian homes during the winter. Orchids, majesty palm, begonias, and Boston fern are some that will benefit from a daily misting with room temperature water in a fine spray bottle, generally when the soil starts to appear dry. Keep an eye out for brown or dry leaf tips. Important note: Succulents, fiddle leaf fig, and spider plants are among those that do not benefit from misting and can end up with the symptoms of overwatering when misted. The easiest way to decide whether to mist your houseplants or not is to consider where they came from. Those native to the
Mediterranean and Africa typically enjoy drier conditions than the lush tropical plants hailing from the rainforests of Southeast Asia and South America.
NEW YEAR DIET PROGRAM
Like many of us, the new year is a good time for indoor plants to cut back their food intake. Pay close attention — if there is new growth, continue fertilizing at a reduced rate. Most common houseplants slow down in the winter, so you can hold off fertilizing completely until early spring when you notice growth picking up again. In extreme cases, fertilizing in winter can turn soil salty and burn roots however, most often it is just a waste – the expensive fertilizer will end up flowing right through the soil.

Whether you are moving into or out of a new space, there are certain things to do to make things go as smoothly as possible. Think of the following tips as ‘moving etiquette’.
• Let your neighbours at both ends know when to expect the movers to pull into your place. Ensure the movers park and unload to avoid blocking anyone else’s driveway or trespassing on other property.
• If you are booking a residential move, try and select 9 or 10 a.m. for your truck to arrive since people who work 9-to-5 are not home. You are less likely to cause them any inconvenience.
• Book elevators in advance in the building you are leaving and the one you will be moving into so you have the benefit of arranging your time comfortably. Check to see if movers are restricted to using specific doors.
• Have your pets cared for elsewhere. Moving means doors will be open for long periods, and animals wandering about can be dangerous for them and for the movers.
• Most people wonder whether to tip movers. It is not compulsory, so it is totally up to you.
• Most moving companies are good about removing packing materials, crates, boxes, etc. when they leave. If anything is left behind, collect it yourself and dispose of it.
• As items are moved out of rooms, sweep, mop and clean what you can. Some people hire cleaners before giving the key to the landlord or new owners.

While many people idealize home ownership and cling to it as a goal, not everyone wants to own their own home. Especially after retirement, the “perks” of homeownership pale in comparison to the benefits of renting. If you’re thinking about making a change to your living situation, here are 10 good reasons why renting may be preferable to owning your home.
1. MOBILITY. If employment or other life circumstances require you to move to a different city (or province), it’s a lot easier to give your landlord notice and hunt for an apartment than it would be to put your home on the market, sell it and buy a new one.
2. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE. Whether it’s shovelling snow for 90 days straight in winter, raking autumn leaves or mowing the lawn in summer, outdoor tasks are the responsibility of your landlord, superintendent or management company, unless your lease dictates otherwise.

5. ACCESS TO AMENITIES. Pools, gyms, party rooms and libraries are all fairly common features of upscale modern apartment buildings. In addition, highdensity housing is often situated in the heart of the city, close to entertainment and shopping, which opens up a world of possibilities for your social life.
6. NO DOWN PAYMENT. All you have to come up with to secure your apartment is enough to cover your rent and/or security deposit. Some landlords may ask for a security deposit rather than the last month, but it will usually end up being applied that way – at any rate, deposits aren’t excessive. With the average home price in Canada now well over $400k, even a very small down payment plus legal fees, plus home inspection, plus, plus, plus – it all adds up to a big investment and a lot of money to pay out on key day.
7. SAFETY. Living in a rental unit typically means living near a lot of other people, and while that can occasionally be irksome, those country music fans who hold a stomping hootenanny every Saturday night are also going to hear you scream if you’re in trouble, or notice if your car hasn’t moved or your mail starts piling up.
8. CHEAPER INSURANCE. Unlike homeowners, renters do not have to insure the property – only the contents. When you get your renters’ insurance, expect to be paying
approximately half of what you would if you owned your home. Canadian renters’ insurance averages $20 to $30 a month in most parts of the country.
9. NO PROPERTY TAXES. While you can assume that at least some of the rent you pay goes towards covering that cost for your landlord, it isn’t your financial responsibility. Your rent remains stable and increases in a predictable fashion.
10. LOWER UTILITY COSTS. Heating (or cooling) a larger space than that which you actually occupy is one of the downsides of homeownership. Rental units have more compact floorplans, and in the winter, you may even benefit from ambient heat from the building or apartments around you, depending on its layout.

If a fIre burns down your buIldIng:
Property insurance: Your landlord’s property insurance would pay for the demolition of the building (if necessary), as well the expenses to repair or rebuild it. Their insurance would not cover your personal belongings.
Versus Renters’ insurance: In most cases, renters’ insurance would cover all
of the contents in your unit in the case of a fire.
If someone gets hurt
In your home:
Property insurance: If someone slips on a spill and is hurt in your home, your landlord’s insurance would not help if that person decided to sue you.
Versus Renters’ insurance: If you had liability coverage included in your renters’ insurance, it would protect you financially if you unintentionally caused bodily harm to someone in your home.
If someone breaks In and steals your stuff: Property insurance: The landlord’s property insurance doesn’t extend
to the contents of your unit. Without renters’ insurance, you’d be on the hook for replacing everything in this situation.
Versus Renters’ insurance: In most cases, your renters’ insurance policy covers your possessions and personal property if your apartment gets broken into.
