When my glamourous client presented me with the design freedom to create a colourful penthouse in the sky, I jumped at the chance. The 365-degree views of the lake are the perfect backdrop for my canvas of bold blues and saturated pinks.

When designing an open-concept space with colourful pieces, it’s important to consider the flow and sightlines in the rooms from various angles, ensuring that the entire colour palette works in harmony.

Add the magic of colour to your home. For some inspiration, here are my top three tricks to achieving a luxurious colourful look in any space.

Use a pattern as the jumping-off colour palette in your room. Art, a rug or accent pillows are the perfect accessories to use as the basis to your vibrant room scheme.

The custom pink settee that sits like a reigning queen in the entrance gives visitors a sneak peek into the vibrant pops of colour that awaits them as they pass from room to room. The watery hue is echoed in the rich blue custom velvet sofa that forms the basis of this welcoming seating area. I opted for an oversized coffee table that proudly displays a mix of books, candles and my client’s colourful collectables.

Consider slipcovers as a budget-friendly alternative to colourful custom upholstery.

APARTMENT SAFETY AND SECURITY TIPS

If there is one lesson every landlord wants residents to remember is to not let strangers into the building. Don’t open the front door for people you don’t know, don’t answer the intercom or Enterphone to unlock the lobby door. Notify your superintendent when you see canvassers going door-to-door. You can never be too cautious. We recommend that residents lock their doors even when they’re inside their apartment. It’s too easy for people to just

walk right in. It is amazing how many people walk into an apartment because they got off on the wrong floor or simply because they weren’t paying attention. It can be an innocent enough mistake but it can also be awkward and embarrassing.

Stop newspaper delivery when you’re going away for even a few days. Nothing says ‘noone’s home’ louder than a pile of newspapers sitting outside the door.

Another thing to consider is tenants’ insurance, which generally costs about $250 per year. The landlord’s insurance doesn’t cover the contents of a unit, only the floors and walls –basically the shell of your suite.

They are not responsible for your personal effects. Many landlords make having tenants’ insurance a requirement for signing a lease, but some residents choose to ignore it. Keep in mind if you cause a flood or a fire, then you could be held responsible for all resulting damage including any to the walls and floors. What’s $250 when you’re talking about peace of mind? ST. VITAL

BETWEEN TWO RIVERS

St. Vital is a sprawling suburban area in Winnipeg wading far and wide between two rivers. The Red River marks the west boundary and the Seine River marks the east. Carriere Avenue is the northern boundary and the rural municipality of Ritchot is the southern boundary.

Newer, amenity-oriented neighbourhoods dominate the landscape in clusters in smiling St. Vital. The suburban style of family living close to the country gets richer in the south, but all homes and residents seem fairly prosperous and settled. Old St. Vital has some francophone history, yet it’s largely overshadowed by modern cosmopolitan consumers who want to shop and live in luxury by the river.

As the middle child in a French family of three sisters, St. Vital starts out as gregariously urban with long rows of strip malls braided alongside a huge shopping mall and cosy middle-class lots near the river.

Furthest south, the landscape suddenly becomes rural, running past shops into pastures of prairie grass and corn mazes. Professional residents know how to maneouvre around roadblocks from busy Bishop Grandin Boulevard to the farmers’ markets.

Starting out traditionally Francophone, St. Vital has grown and significantly changed over the years. Decades ago, she became

overwhelmingly Anglophone, but now there is a lot of variation between neighbourhoods and more ethnic diversity among new residents. More seniors typically reside along the northwest and residents with higher incomes and education are located further south.

St. Vital offers a lot for middleincome families. A smaller budget might find North St. Vital more central and affordable. Big budgets build in the south.

The growing trend toward diversity and demand for new housing has made St. Vital homeownership-competitive. With Baby Boomers retiring, there is also a growing need for multi-family homes and services. Apartments, condos and townhouses situated close to the malls and main bus

routes have much to offer with balconies, granite counters, large suites with lofts and some with a highrise view.

Traffic is constant east to west and on main cross streets, covering large expanses of land by high-speed roads. Buses are frequent, especially at the northern intersections. Pedestrians and cyclists congregate closer to the south by the mall or on residential streets. A trip to the airport could be half an hour.

Major parks and centres include St. Vital Park near the Red River, Maple Grove at the southern tip, plus Jonathan Toews Community Centre and St. Vital Centennial Arena.

St. Vital is loved by residents and visitors. The shopping is stupendous, but a car is a must.

The year’s most popular moving dates are coming up. I want to suggest you actually consider helping a friend move. Why?

Because it won’t be as bad as you think, and your fellow renter would really appreciate it.

If a friend asks you to help them move, it does not mean you will be facilitating the entire move. In fact, I really do not suggest relying on friends for a complete move, but rather for a pair of helping hands.

There are many ways you can help with a move, including before the move, during the move and

Moving also involves a lot of cleaning – be it the old place or the new place that still needs to be vacuumed and dusted before bringing in furniture. Then, after all that work, there’s unpacking and getting organized.

So, before you say no to helping with a move, consider asking your friend what they need help with. Your strength at some point may be needed, but just being there to help pack, clean and organize can also be a big help. All that being said, helping friends move still isn’t the most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. That’s why I say

HOW TO DEAL WITH REPLENISHABLES

Living with roommates has many benefits but it can get a little tricky if you don’t decide how to deal with the usual living costs that go along with rent. I’m talking about replenishables such as toilet paper, food, dish soap, light bulbs, paper towels, etc. The sooner you choose the best way for you and your roomies to buy this stuff, the better. It will help you avoid fighting over who uses the most toilet paper.

TAKE TURNS BUYING: This works if – and only if – everyone agrees to it. If not, it’s chaos. You probably don’t want to buy toilet paper and just assume your roommate will grab it next time, because that roommate might never buy any. Be clear — I’ll buy this pack; you buy the next.

Decide who buys what and for where if you’re going to take turns. Same goes for groceries, cleaning supplies and anything else you might share.

THE SLUSH FUND: If you think it’s necessary, create a fund that you all contribute to that will be there when you need essentials. Placing a jar in the kitchen works as long as everyone agrees not to use the funds for take-out (it can be tempting when you get low on groceries). Decide on an amount that everyone will contribute on a weekly or monthly basis, and confirm what the funds will be

used for to buy. Will they strictly be used for household supplies or will they pay for groceries, too?

KEEP THINGS SEPARATE: If you can’t all agree on the best way to deal with replenishables, it’s best to keep it all separate. If you’re living with someone you strictly consider a roommate, and not necessarily a friend, this is often the best bet. It can get tiresome to split up toilet paper but it can also avoid awkward scenarios and fights about money. There’s nothing wrong with keeping things to yourself, plus it can make your monthly budgeting a lot easier.

EMBRACE FAMILY LIVING: If you’re close with your roommates, you might not need an actual system. For some roommates, especially those who have lived together for a long time, these things just work themselves out. You’ll grab toilet paper when it’s on sale, and so

will your roommate. You’ll make dinner, they’ll do the dishes, and vice versa. If you like to bake, and your roommates like to eat your baking, they’ll make sure the house is always stocked with flour.

When you live like this, you have more of a family dynamic than a roommate agreement. It can be wonderful to have a relationship like this, but it’s not for everyone. Make sure you’re all on board before you start using your roomies’ shampoo or eating their cereal!

When it comes to ensuring a successful move, timing is everything! So the first question to ask is, are you moving yourself, or will you hire movers? Be sure to book the moving company or truck at least a month ahead, if not more.

Next, are you going to do the packing or let the professionals do the job for you? If you are thinking DIY, start collecting/buying boxes and packing material.

Professional movers usually sell standard-sized boxes that are sturdy and easy to stack, as well as paper that can protect your items without leaving newsprint behind. Finally, which of your belongings do you want/need to move? Why not purge all of those unnecessary items you don’t need?

The following is a handy reference for what to do when.

A MONTH BEFORE THE MOVE …

• De-clutter, pitch, give away, donate — whatever — but pare down your goods.

• Obtain change-of-address cards from the post office.

• Notify magazines, insurance companies, banks, credit card companies, schools, employers, etc. of your change of address.

• If you are moving to a new home or condo that includes appliances, ask for the owner’s manuals ahead of time.

ONE TO TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE…

• Make a closet of items you will need to clean the place once furniture is moved (broom, dustpan, cleansers, etc.).

• Either start packing or make sure your mover begins. Label boxes as you pack with the contents and which room each will go into at your new digs. Write the destination room on the top and sides of each box.

• Schedule disconnects for utilities and phone, but make sure you still have the use of your phone line on moving day. Arrange for hook-ups at the other end.

• Cancel newspapers and any companies you use for services.

• Send change-of-address cards.

THE DAY BEFORE THE MOVE…

• Clean out and dry the fridge and freezer.

• Get to a bank or bank machine and take out enough cash to tide you over.

• Pack a last-minute essentials bag/box.

• Arrange for children and pets to be looked after elsewhere on moving day.

ON MOVING DAY…

• Double and triple check all rooms, closets, garage, basement, attic etc., to ensure that you have all of your things and the areas are left clean.

• Carry your own (family’s) valuables to the move and all other important documents.

throughout your home. Whether you like wicker or leather, brightly coloured or neutral, consider buying extras as you may not be able to find the same ones again later.

Need help clearing clutter and creating a cleaner look? Use boxes. But be aware – not all boxes are created equal. Some are for storing, some for sorting, and some for showcasing. For storage, boxes should be strong and sturdy, and don’t forget to label them effectively. For sorting, make sure they’re big enough, but not too cumbersome to carry from room to room. For showcasing, make sure they’re stylish.

Create both impact and a sense of calm by choosing baskets or boxes in a similar style to use

Anytime you have a vast open storage area (i.e. toy chest), think of creative ways to subdivide it to keep it organized. Break big areas into smaller ones by using containers of various sizes. You can reuse the packages that regular household items come in: tissue boxes, cheque boxes and baby-wipe containers. In addition, you can subdivide using drawer dividers, shelves and stacking trays.

If your collections are hidden away in a musty basement or forgotten in the corner of your closet, they’re clutter. Collections

have their place, but they need to be displayed in a way that reflects their meaning to you. Small items can be mounted and framed in shadow boxes, which can hang on the wall or sit on a table. Larger items stay dust-free when they’re displayed in a shelving unit with glass doors.

Gracious hosting is all about making your guests feel comfortable. It’s also about making your home, their home, even if only for a short period of time. This is when some of those often-overlooked rooms come into focus – namely, the guest bedroom and bath. Follow these design tips to style these spaces as a cosy retreat your visitors will never want to leave!

Decorate with neutrals

If your goal is to make them comfortable, using a neutral colour palette of creams, whites and gentle greys will go a long way. Generally speaking, this family of hues is broadly appealing, which makes it a great choice for a guest bedroom, where one guest’s esthetic preferences and comfort level may differ dramatically from another’s.

Another reason neutral colours work well in a guest bedroom – or in any bedroom – is the atmosphere and ambience they lend to the space. Cool, calm and collected is the ultimate in guest room goals.

Finally, as we see colour trends fade in and out of style every year, a neutral colour scheme has

remained consistent. Going this route means you won’t have to redecorate any time soon.

Make it indulgent

Treat your guests to a little luxury for the duration of their stay. When it comes to extravagances, the best place to take your cues is from the hotel industry. Think back to your favourite vacation accommodation, and remember what made your stay so memorable. Then, incorporate some of these elements into your bedrooms at home. Fresh soft bedding, piles of pillows and extra blankets are sleep essentials, especially during the winter months. In the guest bath, ensure there are plenty of plush towels and toiletries at your guests’ disposal.

From a decor perspective, you can incorporate little luxuries into the room in the form of a textured feature wall, elegant window coverings, modern lighting, and furnishings that are both practical and stylish.

Enhance function and interest

Some thoughtful accessories and pieces of furniture, beyond the bed

and night tables, can really give your guests added independence and flexibility in their room.

Assume that visitors will be using the room to relax and do their own thing at times, so aim for comfort and function. Incorporate a small sitting area tucked into the corner of a room to add visual interest, while providing a place for people to sit, take a phone call, or just relax

With that said, don’t overburden the room, or your guests, with too much “stuff.” Keep the space clean and clutter-free to maintain its sense of rest and relaxation.

Creating a “home away from home” is easy when you have the right inspiration. But while your goal is to indulge your guests, remember that the room is in your home, so it should align with your own esthetic preferences and practical needs. With the right pieces in place, you just might find yourself spending a lot more time in the guest room.
