surprised when they learn what their potential renovation will cost them, and the cost always seems to be higher than what they expected. Doing some research into what things on your wish list have the biggest impact on your budget will help put you in the driver’s seat to make the decisions that are right for you. Understanding the costs early in the project will help you to make smart decisions in your renovation, and hiring a professional to guide you through these decisions is a sure way to know you are getting the most ‘bang for your buck’. Talk to a qualified designer or contractor early in your project; this allows you to understand if your wish list/ project scope and budget are in line. Generally this conversation is had within the very first meeting. Being honest and upfront about your expectations will allow the professional you choose to give you realistic feedback on what is achievable for your budget. Ensure that you have a completed budget prior to starting any demolition on your home, this will offer some certainty on what you will ultimately spend on your project. In order to get an accurate budget, you must first complete the design, because it’s impossible for any contractor to know what your renovation will cost without the drawings, as well as material and fixture specifications to show what is going back in the house. Renovations that have the most impact on a home’s occupants are usually ones that have the most changes, such as switching room function and modifications to the flow of the home. Unfortunately, these are also the renovations that come with the highest price tag. Structural, electrical and plumbing

My House Design/Build/Team Innovative thinking brings Vancouver design firm international acclaim OFTEN, THE MOST EXCITING DESIGN ARISES OUT OF A SITUATION in which the renovation
team must think outside the box. This is certainly the case in the My House Design/Build/Team’s remodel of the home pictured on these pages. When Graeme Huguet first sat down with the owners of this West Vancouver house, who had recently retired and moved here from Edmonton, it was clear that the home’s selling point was its view of English Bay and Stanley Park. It was also clear that the current layout wasn’t making the most of that view and that the function and finishings were very much in need of an 8 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS FEB - MAR 2014
update. The original floorplan had lot of living area relegated to the basement and main floor. What the couple could really use was a third level to make the most of their view, but they were already at the maximum allowable building height and square footage for their lot. Where some design firms might have seen limitations, My House saw potential. Although bylaws restricted them from increasing the envelope of the house, the vaulted ceiling on the main floor left plenty of room to create a second floor over the living room. In order to keep the house within the allowable square footage, part of the basement was filled in, turning it into a 4’11” crawl space for storage and mechanicals. Since the family was already using their basement as storage, this meant that no room would really be lost.
MAKE THE MOST OF THE SPACE YOU USE… THE MOST
AGING IN PLACE DESIGN
The family seldom went downstairs before the renovation, so the team at My House ensured that the rooms in the basement became secondary rooms post-renovation: a rec room, two guest bedrooms, a workshop, a craft room and storage/ mechanical space. On the new second floor, a 600-sq.-ft. master bedroom suite now capitalizes on the fantastic view and truly makes the most of the layout. From the bedroom, sliding glass doors open to a balcony that allows the owners to step out into their view. In the ensuite bathroom, a picture window above the luxurious soaker tub ensures that access to the view extends into this area as well. A separate oversized glassframed shower and clean lines throughout this bathroom echo the elegant modern redesign on the floors below.
My House also ensured that the house will be a place where the couple can live for many years to come by maintaining an existing first-floor bedroom (the former master bedroom), which now functions as the house’s primary guest bedroom, but might one day be useful if the couple decides to restrict the majority of their living to one floor. BRIGHT AND OPEN
Somehow, while including more living space above ground, My House has increased the sense of openness in this area of the home. Huguet FEB - MAR 2014 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 9
HAVING THE MAIN FLOOR ALL ON ONE LEVEL KEEPS THE DESIGN NEAT AND CLEAN, WHICH ALSO FURTHERS THE FEELING OF SPACIOUSNESS indicates that despite giving more actual volume to the area, “the vaulted ceiling made the dining room look separate from the kitchen.” My House created a feeling of openness by knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, and the new oversized kitchen island further pulls these rooms together, making them the perfect place for entertaining. Transformation to the entranceway also created a new feeling of airiness on the main level. The entranceway was pulled in by four feet, moving stairs that were once in the home’s foyer outside the house. This served the dual purpose of increasing the property’s curb appeal and, as Huguet says, making the entranceway feel “more natural,” as we’re accustomed to climbing stairs up to a home’s front door, rather than doing so after entering. Having the main floor all on one level keeps the design neat and clean, which also furthers the feeling of spaciousness. Another means of increasing the openness, Huguet explains, was “turning the staircase to the basement around, so stairs going into the basement now come from the South side, the view side, and this allowed us to have an open staircase going to the third floor.” Not only does the open staircase keep the spectacular panoramic view accessible from the point of entry to the home, but it’s also an architectural feature that

adds visual interest to the current design. Using glulam wood beams and glass throughout the entranceway brought in an abundance of natural light. My House used special glazing windows to repel the hot sun and keep the heat in during the winter, meaning that the couple doesn’t need to install any window coverings that would obstruct the view. GOING GREEN
The home has also been modernized by making it more environmentally friendly, and it’s now a certified Built Green Gold Level home. With heat mirror glass on the south wall, new Icynene spray foam insulation, a high-efficiency furnace,
heat-pump hot water on demand, Energy Star-rated new vinyl windows, low-flow toilets and faucets and dimmer switches throughout; all of which add up to a home that will maximize energy efficiency for years to come. Low VOC paint and Green Certified cabinet construction were used throughout the renovation, to boot, further lessening the impact of the remodel on the environment. AWARD-WINNING DESIGN
So innovative is this renovation, that it has brought MyHouse acclaim that goes beyond Vancouver, winning the 2013 North American QR Master Design Awards’ Judges’ Vision Award (and making My House the first British Columbia company to win this prestigious award), as well as receiving local praise in the form of a 2012 Georgie and 2013 Ovation Award. My House is, of course, no stranger to accolades: Not only is this project a Georgie and Ovation winner, but as
a company, My House has won over a hundred industryrelated awards in the past. The secret of My House’s success might lie in the fact that, unlike many other design/build firms, this company does most work in house. Not only is it a design/build firm, but the full company name, My House Design/ Build/ Team, includes the word “team” for a reason. Huguet explains that the resources the company has in house allows it to tailor a team to each specific project: “A small project, like renovating a kitchen in a condo takes a different kind of team than building a custom home, but we have the versatility within our company to adapt to any size or type of project.” For the project shown on these pages, that meant assembling a team that could tackle what Huguet terms “making a new lifestyle fit into an older style home.” Somehow, the team has made this home feel entirely new in the process. Mission accomplished.

Q&A with Shaun Krahn and Phong Ho of Kitchen Craft Cabinetry A Solutions-Oriented Firm with a Philosophy of Harmony by STEPHANIE MACDONALD SM: Can you tell me what makes your cabinets eco-friendly? KC: We have achieved certification in the Kitchen Cabinetry Manufactures Association (KCMA) Environmental Stewardship Program, ensuring our products meet the lowest emission standards for better indoor air quality. We employ the use of 100 per cent recycled materials, as well as those sourced from accredited sustainable foresters, and we have adopted a company-wide reduce and recycle program. SM: Can you tell me about the project that you’ve decided to feature here? KC: The cabinet door style is named Sheffield. It is maple and the paint is Seashell with a Pewter Glaze.

Here’s what they had to say about how they gained their great reputation and built the success of Kitchen Craft Cabinetry. SM: What are the advantages of working with a company that specializes in kitchens, such as yours? KC: There are many; however, the main advantage is that our extensive experience allows us to be able to foresee issues that might arise and provide solutions before building costs are incurred. Importantly, we also look at the project from another angle, from the client’s point of view, and really study how they use the kitchen on a daily basis. From this information we design a workspace that is both beautiful and highly functional. SM: Do you do a lot of repeat business or get many clients through word of mouth? KC: Yes, we pride ourselves on giving our customers the best overall experience, and as a result, repeat clients or referrals support most of our business. In addition, we’ve been in business for over 40 years, and our product is manufactured in Canada and is backed by an industry leading “Lifetime Limited Warranty” which is important to many people.

SM: Did this project present any unique challenges? KC: Working with client’s wish list, their particular visions and dreams, all while addressing practical concerns. One issue was with the main kitchen ceiling. The original plan for the ceiling was simply too high and we had to request that the builder re-design it to be practical, functional and more visually pleasing. SM: How did you meet these challenges? KC: The most important part was presenting viable options and making sure the client understood — and was an important part — of the design and decision process. SM: How do you assess what a client needs/ wants in a kitchen? KC: This requires many detailed questions, for example: Who is the primary user? What meals are typically prepared here? What is the client’s wish list and design vision? In this case, the grandmother who lives here wished to use the large island for entertaining her friends. My solution was to have the island with two levels so she could meet with her friends for coffee and social activities while still maintaining the functional aspect of the countertop for everyday use. SM: When designing a kitchen, do you look at the rest of the house, so that the kitchen is in harmony with it? KC: Absolutely, it’s important to look at the entire scope of work needed and ensure all designs are in harmony with each other.

From a design perspective, the home was a great opportunity to elevate and enhance the modern lifestyle of an active family with two boys. The home provides a bedroom with bathroom and balcony for each family member, two home offices, guest bedroom and that all-important mortgage helper. All topped with a rooftop deck embracing the fabulous views of downtown Vancouver and the North Shore mountains The building’s exterior features a harmonious blend of Hardie panels, aluminum trim and cedar siding creating a new dynamic on the street. Interior finishes feature TGI lumber, Italian tiling, yellow birch hardwood flooring, quartz countertops, custom bamboo and silver-toned kitchen cabinets, while on the technology side there are built-in speakers for entertainment and LED lighting throughout the house.

the coordinating box spring – as it absorbs up to 50 per cent of the body’s impact.” Semkuley also suggests getting comfy and cosy in store by laying on it like you would normally sleep, to see if the mattress is a right fit. Whether you prefer a mattress that is firm, made of organic material or one that comes with a pillow top for extra comfort, buy the best one you can afford.

Get your home in the swing of spring INEXPENSIVE SUGGESTIONS TO GET A HEAD START ON SPRINGTIME DÉCOR by JULIA SMITH WHILE OUR WINTER HAS BEEN
relatively rain-free by Vancouver standards, most of us are still happily anticipating the arrival of longer days and sunshine. Even before the skies are blue and the trees blossom, you can fake it till you make it with these inexpensive recommendations to enliven your interiors with the bright and colourful energy of springtime. BRING SOME BLOOMS INSIDE
Easy and uplifting, fresh flowers in your home are a simple and inexpensive way to enhance your interior. You could splurge on a custom bouquet created for you by a favourite florist, pick up some tulips or peonies while grocery shopping, or snip a few sprigs from your own garden. Witch hazel and pussy willows are abundant at this time of year and blossoms are not far behind. Use an unexpected vessel instead of a traditional vase. Granny’s antique teapot, a champagne flute or teacup can be repurposed for this occasion. Placing flowers under a bell cloche is another interesting way to display them but they don’t tend to last very long that way. FOOD USED AS DÉCOR
A pile of saucy red apples or perky lemons can also brighten your countertops. Place them on a fresh white cake platter or a silver tea tray and you will have an edible centerpiece. PRETTY UP YOUR PLATES
I have a stack of plain everyday white china as well as my wedding-gift goldrimmed set. I love these standbys and wouldn’t get rid of them for the world but sometimes my table just needs a little “perk up”. To this end I use colourful accent plates, napkins, napkin rings or glassware. You can splurge on some colourful crystal glasses you’ve been eyeing or purchase inexpensive napkins. Adding a variety of colour may be a little much, unless you are going for the gypsy bohemian look, so try to pick one or two colours and run with those. 26 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS FEB - MAR 2014
ADD COLOUR
The go-to designer suggestion of refreshing with paint is a go-to for a reason. It works. Spruce up your space with a coat of paint in your most well used room. Another way to add life without the fuss and mess of painting is to change your throw pillows and blankets. Try to pick one or two colours that coordinate with your existing furniture and use those as your accents. To avoid the space becoming too busy, mix patterns in the same shade or colour and give the eyes a break by incorporating a neutral. CHANGE YOUR WALL DECOR
This doesn’t necessarily scream “SPRING!” but it will certainly perk up your interior. There are plenty of ideas online for the DIY’ers ranging from the simple to the more challenging. Trending on many interior design blogs is the use of classical ceiling medallions or rosettes as wall hangings. These can be painted to match your walls to give a more subtle, textural effect or sprayed a crisp colour to stand out. A mix of framed art, photos and ephemera covering a wall is another option or hanging one large oversized statement piece is another. Etsy and local art colleges are great sources for reasonably priced original artwork or you or your children can create your own masterpieces.

or an interior designer, life is all about looking for big inspirations. They can be found in any place, at any time of day, and can come from the grandest spaces or the smallest details. My recent travels to design destinations such as Paris, New York, London, Miami and Vancouver exposed me to many beautiful spaces. I’m always looking for ways to take what I discover and translate it for my clients.
I never worry too much about following trends – I love to study them, but then translate the ideas into timeless statements. However, very often in design, one perfect new piece is all you need to completely change and update the look of a space. So, to help get you feeling as inspired for 2014 as I am, here’s my list of 10 room-transforming ideas you’ll be sure to fall in love with this year. 1 CRISP COPPER After years of cool silver hues ruling the metal market, warm tones are returning to reclaim the throne. The must-have metal of the moment, however, isn’t classic gold, but copper in all forms: bronze, brass and the inviting reds of pure copper itself. A few copper accents (or one bold light fixture) adds immense depth to a colour palette despite functioning as a neutral. GET THE LOOK Marvel at the handmade brass lights from Pavilion, or try the sparkling Crystal Bulb available through Klaus Nienkamper (available with an elegant copper pendant cord, or as a stand-alone cut crystal bulb you can use to add sparkle to an existing fixture). 2 PERFECT PERFORATIONS Perforated metal, especially in warm tones, will be popular this year, popping up in fashion and jewellery and now interior design. 3 ANTIQUED MIRROR Grand mirrors have long been used to open spaces visually, but aren’t always a true feature themselves. Sometimes, using a few copies of one deceptively simple object can create the biggest impact. 5 WOVEN WONDERS Weaving of string, cord and even straw, popular in worldly safari-inspired looks, is showing up in modern forms lately. Try this material for an oversized pendant lamp to add rich texture in a simple but eye-catching silhouette. Mix a masculine classic such as a Mid-Century Modern lounge chair into your living room, den or even bedroom for instant Mad Men appeal — the look is trendy, but timeless. GET THE LOOK Browse vintage shops like Decorum (in person or online at 1stdibs.com). The sumptuous, leather, vintage Mies chairs adds a perfect anchor of gentlemanly heritage to any space.

For 2014, more and more people are embracing colour in a big way. Expect to see eclectic mixes of bright hues, dark, moody walls and especially painted doors. 8 DRAMATIC PLASTIC Although moulded plastic in interior design has been a staple since the 1960s, lately it’s seen a huge resurgence, especially when colourful or transparent, and mixed with more traditional materials (such as wood or stone) for playful contrast. Try switching to airy plastic chairs in your dining room, for a whole new eclectic vibe. GET THE LOOK Kartell’s Masters chair (a combination of three classic chair silhouettes) in this years must-have shade of sage green, available through online stores like allmodern.com. GET THE LOOK The La Mise sofa from Italinteriors, in a trendy but classic royal blue, can add a pop of colour to subdued spaces or act as a near-neutral in an already eclectic mix. 10 ARCHITECTURAL TOUCHES Any trip to Paris will leave you awed by the grand mouldings, lavish libraries and rich heritage details that dress the famous city, but I found hotel La Maison Champs Elysees especially inspiring: their use of trompe l’oeil papers to enrich more architecturally minimal rooms is chic, clever and memorable.

A neutral or classic all-white bathroom décor can have added character with striking, dramatic pops of colors. There are more options in color with the vanity, faucet, fixtures, flooring, tiles, bathtub, toilet and lighting. Also, since the bathroom can be one of the smallest rooms in your home, storage should be an essential consideration. You can continue to be creative in maximizing your space while balancing aesthetics. Ledges in showers, tub-side shelving and building in medicine cabinets are options for functional storage. Mirrors are effective at creating additional visual space. Additionally, decide on which items you would like to indulge on like a rain showerhead, soaker tub or floating vanity. An ergonomic kitchen contributes to efficiency and eliminates unnecessary steps and time. While planning your new kitchen, think about what bothers you most in your current kitchen. Is there enough space for pots and pans? Are they close enough to the stove? Is there a cabinet that seems impossible to get organized?
A new client told me how more space was needed for a family room and two more bedrooms. We took a little time to understand these needs — as solutions to a deeper need. The home’s shortcomings were few, and mostly related to how it was laid out. The layout no longer effectively served the growing family. It turned out the additional space was just the highest of the family’s many priorities. Initially, they felt addressing all of their needs were out of the question, so they hadn’t asked us to look at the kitchen and other areas.
Here are some kitchen planning tips: • Choose drawers for lower cabinets and create easy access to those difficult to reach items at the back of a cupboard. • Plan for countertop space near the cook top and ovens. • Install the dishwasher near the dish storage area. • Plan a work space near the sink. • Store your plates in a bottom drawer — you can lift them easily. • Left handed? Think of the location of the appliances; for example, place the dishwasher to the left of the sink. • Plan sufficient lighting above your work space, but do have a fixture for general lighting as well. Ergonomic design in the kitchen is a must. Not only will it facilitate meal preparation but it will help eliminate those extra steps that we don’t have time for. Allow your well-planned kitchen to simplify your life.

Through focusing on the priorities of a longer list of needs, we learned of a number of other challenges that could be included in an overall assessment of the family home. And after sifting through a handful of possible solutions and their relative merits, everybody at the meeting table took stock. Eureka! Almost every concern about the home had been addressed. The chosen design solution was simple, and it bore no resemblance to the original design conversation. We reflected silently on this for just a moment, and then we all broke into laughter. It was the beginning of a great renovation!

The bottom line for you as a judge is, of course, The Look. As a contractor, I consider Function before all else; beauty smoothly follows a clear, efficient design. Detailing can include how effectively the designer and tradespeople have integrated the working aspects of the kitchen to leverage both eye appeal and easy use of that expensive gadgetry. In a renovation, the existing kitchen’s services and floorplan provide design constraint and inspiration for our designer. Many of our best renovations succeeded because of space considerations, treasured aspects of the home and a challenging layout of adjacent rooms. Energy use and Green considerations are achieved with careful selection of appliances and water fixtures. Always consider health and air quality. Most products are thoroughly supported by great documentation, giving the consumer and contractor added confidence in selecting the right products.

As always, it was an exuberant evening filled with plenty of glitz and glam to celebrate the best of the best in BC’s dynamic residential building industry. “Tonight we honour the CHBA-BC members who build, renovate, develop, design, sell, decorate, landscape and market the best of the best projects 38 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS FEB - MAR 2014
in all of British Columbia,” said Rob Capar, president of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC (CHBA-BC). “Finalists and winners exemplify the high calibre of expertise and hard work associated with our member companies, as well as the fact that BC is a true leader of innovative design and quality construction.” Schreyer Construction Ltd was the only finalist to take home multiple golds in this year’s renovation categories by garnering top honours three times for Cedar Ridge Home in Whistler. “This is a very modern look for Whistler,” said Katarina Schreyer, “but one that people are beginning to ask for here.” Adding a layer of visual

With space at a premium plus the classic challenge of a townhome — no possibility to expand the home’s overall footprint — Schreyer Construction chose to remove interior walls and relocate the staircase to this home’s upper floor. The result is a dramatic great room featuring
open, entertainment-oriented kitchen and casual area focused on a new, linear fireplace where the owners and their guests can chill out, relax and socialize. Behind the scenes, an under-utilized crawlspace provides an easily accessed location for the updated mechanical systems. On the main floor, three cramped and uninviting rooms — kitchen, dining and living — are now an open, fluid great room. The living room’s focal point is a massive seven-foot wide, horizontal fireplace accented by a suspended slab, polished concrete hearth and wood surround. two small bedrooms were combined to form a second master suite with private ensuite and seating area for the couple’s adult son who acts as interpreter and caregiver. Introducing an often playful new twist to repurposing and recycling, Naikoon Contracting Ltd transformed an uninspired bungalow on The Drive into a vibrant, trend-setting home that honours its location in the heart of one of Vancouver’s most artistic and eclectic neighbourhoods. An entire upper floor was added to give the exterior a stylish, contemporary outlook. Then the true “fun” began.
Named simply 1975 Parker Street, this home’s whimsical yet practical features include pendant lighting made from recycled oxygen cylinder caps above the kitchen island. However, it’s the central staircase and landing that are arguably this home’s most dramatic feature and a “true labour of love” according to Naikoon president Joe Geluch. Twenty-two engineered MicroLam beams were first prepped with a CNC router and then many painstakingly sanded for over 80 hours before being assembled and glued to create this one-of-a-kind focal point and showpiece of design inspiration. Kitchen Over $100,000 went to Copper Creek Homes for the Pol Residence. Part of a larger makeover, the kitchen’s existing footprint was expanded by approximately four feet allowing a full bank of windows to be installed above the sink. Removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room gives an open, fluid connectivity throughout the main living area, making it more usable for the entire family. An island in antique grey with black wash completes the ambiance of a culinary hub that’s evolved over time but with every contemporary convenience. Top honours for Best Condo Renovation under $300,000 went to Klondike Contracting for Sky-High Sanctuary. A down-to-the-studs remake, this renovation was competed in an astonishing seven weeks. The existing, dated and worn kitchen, sunroom and living room were combined into an open great room that maximizes enjoyment of the stunning cityscape views. Carefully selected features — including an economical but dramatic lighting set into the now coved kitchen ceiling — keep the look simple while still making a bold design statement. Add in some punches of colour and texture through use of purple accessories, and presto… contemporary sizzle. The Ins and Outs of Exterior Doors
Security, maintenance and energy efficiency by SHELL BUSEY
AS THE FIRST THING YOU SEE WHEN YOU ENTER, DOORS GIVE PEOPLE THEIR
first impression of your home. Replacing old doors not only improves the look of your home both inside and out, it improves energy efficiency and security as well. Entry doors can be a prominent focal point, making it worthwhile to update old entrance doors to enhance curb appeal and minimize required maintenance. An entrance door is any door that exits to the outside from the home or allows access into the home. An entrance door does not have to be the front door, it could also be a side door, patio door or garage door. So what kind of door do you need? Well folks, you have to be careful what you buy, especially with respect to security, door quality and energy efficiency of the new door. There are many choices available when purchasing entrance doors, but you must seek out the best value within your budget – good, better, best. Here are some guidelines to follow: Wood doors come in a variety of different styles such as solid wood, plywood-faced and hollow doors. Wood doors look great but do require the most maintenance of all door types. Make sure the wood door is professionally finished to maximize the lifespan of the door. Keep in mind that you may have to strip, sand and re-stain the door every few years depending on how the elements affect the door. Metal insulated doors are another common choice for entrance doors. When selecting a metal door, there are many grades available, however they do look very similar to one-another so it can be confusing to tell them apart. I recommend that you pick the door up and feel the weight difference between the different qualities of metal doors. Fibreglass insulated doors are very popular, and I think they give you the best bang for your buck. They are durable, can be stained or painted and are insulated. These doors are available in a wood grain finish that offers the appearance of real wood but will never rot, making the doors maintenance-friendly. The best door frames are composite frame with a composite sill, aluminum clad with a built-in drainage system in place. If you are putting glass in the door, make sure it is safely glass. In some cases you will be advised to use high-quality laminated glass in sidelites (glass beside entrance) for reasons of security. There are many different options in door hardware that you can choose to go along with your new door. Hardware is available in different finishes, such as brass, brushed nickel and antique finishes. Do not forget to address the security performance of new hardware, consider a three-point locking system with locking bolts at the bottom, middle and top of the door. You have two choices with how your door opens: in-swing and out-swing. Most doors today are in-swing, meaning they swing in to the inside of your home. If you do have an out-swing entrance door make sure you have security pins in the door hinges to stop any intruder from removing the hinge pins and removing the door. But do note that out-swinging doors can add security because breaking the door in from the outside is very difficult. So, when considering a replacement entrance door system, remember to keep these features in mind – security, maintenance and energy efficiency.

BC Home + Garden Show with Manager Jill Kivett HD&R: Who are you looking forward to meeting at this year’s show? JK: I am so excited to meet Mike Holmes Jr. and his sister Sherry. They are, of course, the children of Mike Holmes himself. I love that there is a next generation of reno celebrities coming up the ranks!

We caught up with the show’s manager, Jill Kivett, and got a preview of all the exciting things we can expect from this year’s show. HD&R: Anything new and exciting happening in the world of Garden design that might surprise us? JK: Being from Alberta originally, I’m just always blown away by how you can garden 12 months of the year in the Lower Mainland. Growing your own food continues to be a trend, but in this climate you can switch out plants in the winter months and grow your own kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cabbage, continuing the “yard to table” trend all year ‘round. HD&R: What are you keeping your eye out for you to use personally, in your own home? JK: Kitchen cabinets! My 30-year-old townhouse has been fully renovated with the exception of the original kitchen cabinets. They have been painted over and over – it’s time for a refresh! Lucky for me, we have a bunch of great companies in the show that can assist with this – Troico Home Solutions and ENH Cabinets come to mind. HD&R: What do you think the Home & Garden show offers exhibitors and visitors that other shows don’t? JK: Gardens! The BC Home + Garden Show is the only place to see over 7,000 square feet of gardens in February, inside and out of the rain! There is so much inspiration – if you want to do-it-yourself or hire a professional landscaper. HD&R: As Spring is hopefully around the corner, what can we look forward to in terms of outdoor living and furniture ideas? JK: Outdoor kitchens have been trendy for many years but now there are even more creative options. How about including an outdoor brick oven right beside the BBQ? Fresh, homemade pizzas made right there in your backyard are simply amazing! We will also have a ton of stylish, modern furniture options at the show – gone are the days of the round plastic table with four rickety chairs. There will be sectionals, pillows, and dining sets galore in many different colours and styles to suit all types of personal tastes.

with Bryan and Sarah Baeumler, of HGTV’s House of Bryan, to discuss their upcoming appearance at B.C.’s Home + Garden Show. Now filming their third season of the show — and experiencing their third renovation as a family, this time in the country — they had some great advice for our readers on how to weather the storms of a major renovation. 48 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS FEB - MAR 2014
DD: What will you be talking about at the BC Home + Garden Show? SB: LOTS! We’ll cover what it’s like to renovate, build and work with your spouse — and the additional stress that’s added by having a film crew there to watch it all. We’ll also talk about how to avoid some of the problems that people typically run into, from both of our perspectives. DD: What does the next season of House of Bryan have in store? BB: It’s going to be a crazy season. We moved to the country, into an older home with a terrible layout for a family with three kids – then we brought home a fourth! You’ll see a great adventure, along with the trials and tribulations (and there have been a lot of them) that come along with moving your family out of a custom built home in the suburbs, to a forest in the middle of nowhere. Not only are we putting on an addition, but we’re also living in the adjoining house the entire time — something I never recommend, which means I’ve discarded my own advice. It’s been a challenge…but it’s going to be a great show.
NOW FILMING THEIR THIRD SEASON OF THE SHOW — AND EXPERIENCING THEIR THIRD RENOVATION AS A FAMILY, THIS TIME IN THE COUNTRY — THEY HAD SOME GREAT ADVICE FOR OUR READERS ON HOW TO WEATHER THE STORMS OF A MAJOR RENOVATION.
DD: Can you explain what prompted your decision to move to the country? SB: It’s always been something that we’ve talked about…but never very seriously. It was definitely an impulse purchase…we took the scenic route home one day and saw a for sale sign. I think two weeks later it was ours! DD: My family and I just moved into a house that we’d like to put an addition on… eventually. My husband thinks we’ll be able to live in our home while the work is being done, but I have my doubts! I’d love to hear from both of you about how your decision to live in your new country home for the third installation of the House of Bryan panned out. What challenges did that present? Would you ever do that again? BB: I think the decision to live through it has to be made very carefully… there are a lot of factors to consider. My goal initially was to (for the most part) avoid encroaching into the existing house at all until the addition was completed — but that hasn’t exactly happened! Our current living space gets smaller week by week. It’s tight, but there’s an end in sight so we’re managing. You really have to watch the show to see all the details — but let’s just say it’s not always a walk in the park! DD: It’s often said that a renovation puts a lot of stress on a marriage. What are your tips on minimizing this stress and emerging from a renovation as happy a couple (or happier!) than you entered it? SB: It’s true…there is a lot of stress. You are spending a lot of money, and making a lot of decisions very quickly. Anyone that thinks they can go through a major renovation or build together and not have a few good fights has their head in the clouds. You definitely have to pick your battles…at the end of the day, if building a house together ends your relationship, you probably didn’t need the house to begin with! DD: Bryan, you’ve lived in Vancouver before. Any chance you and Sarah might want to build a House of Bryan out West one day? BB: We would LOVE to build a house out West…we’ve talked about that ever since moving back to Ontario. Will we? That’s a tough question…we have four busy kids that spend a lot of quality time with their grandparents, aunts/uncles, nieces and nephews…maybe one day! In the meantime, we’ll visit as often as possible… DD: How do you handle the unexpected that almost invariably arises over the course of a renovation/ build? BB: I’m never surprised…you have to expect the unexpected, and just deal with any changes or problems that arise. Renovating or building is a fluid process, and you have to roll with the punches. If you’re managing the job properly, there will always be good surprises to balance out the bad. The key is to keep the destination in relative focus, while paying close attention to every twist and turn the journey throws at you. DD: Has being on the opposite side of a build/ renovation changed your perspective on clients’ renovations? BB: Not at all — I’ve always demanded the same attention to detail for my clients as I do for myself. I think being in the middle of my own build/reno keeps the needs and concerns of my clients very fresh, and in the forefront of my mind. There’s nothing like being immersed in your work! DD: Bryan, can you offer our readers any tips on hiring a contractor? BB: Yes — go to www.baeumlerapproved.com! The key is to make sure they have all of their important stuff: license, insurance, WSIB, experience, lots of good homeowner and trade references etc., etc., but the most important part is the communication and trust between the homeowner and contractor. People have to use their common sense: don’t hire the first guy that’s available, make sure you have a contract, don’t pay too much up front, don’t pay for things that haven’t been completed, don’t micromanage and, above all, realize that you get what you pay for in most cases. The sad thing is that we’ve all been saying this stuff for years, and everyone knows it, but someone reading this right now will go out and hire the first unlicensed, uninsured, lowest priced guy they meet that will take cash with no contract to save a few bucks, and a few months from now they’ll be singing the blues about getting screwed over by a contractor.
