As the days grow warmer and we open our windows to let in the fresh air, we also risk letting in pesky insects and flies. A friend of mine recently told me the tranquility of her sunroom is being disrupted by some wasps. So far, she has managed to find someone to guide the stinging, buzzing pests outside, but she’s finding it hard to relax in her sunroom, lest they return. Her husband suggested calling an exterminator to see if there is a nest, but although my friend is afraid of wasps, she doesn’t want to kill them. I get her desire to respect all living things, but frankly, I’ve never been a fan of spiders, flies, ants or anything creepy crawly when I’m outside, never mind when they invade my living space. As kind-hearted as I am, it’s wham-slam, into the garbage can as soon as I see an ant, spider or bug in my house. And if I had an infestation, I would call my landlord to take care of it. If you’re being pestered by unwanted house guests, call your landlord. It is their responsibility to take care of the problem. Most landlords appreciate knowing about a situation when it starts, as they would prefer to keep their properties clean. On page 18 of this issue of Renters Guide, you can learn more about how to prevent, and get rid of, some of the more comment household pests. FIND THE RIGHT CONTAINER HELLEN BUTTIGIEG Need help clearing clutter and creating a cleaner look? Use boxes. But be aware – not all boxes are created equal. Some are for storing, some for sorting, and some for showcasing. For storage, boxes should be strong and sturdy, and don’t forget to label them. For sorting, make sure they’re big enough, but not too cumbersome to carry from room to room. For showcasing, make sure they’re stylish. Create both impact and a sense of calm by choosing baskets or boxes in a similar

style to use throughout your home. Whether you like wicker or leather, brightly coloured or neutral, consider buying extras as you may not be able to find the same ones again later. Anytime you have a vast open storage area (i.e. toy chest), think of creative ways to subdivide it to keep it organized. Break big areas into smaller ones by using containers of various sizes. You can reuse the packages that regular household items come in: Tissue boxes, cheque boxes and baby-wipe containers. In addition, you can subdivide using drawer dividers, shelves and stacking trays. If your collections are hidden away in a musty basement or forgotten in the corner of your

closet, they’re clutter. Collections have their place, but they need to be displayed in a way that reflects their meaning to you. Small items can be mounted and framed in shadow boxes, which can hang on the wall or sit on a table. Larger items stay dust-free when they’re displayed in a shelving unit with glass doors. Go to merriamwebster.com and you will see housewarming defined as “a party to celebrate the taking possession of a house or premises.” There is nothing in this definition that speaks directly to the act of buying a home. So why are renters questioning their right to a housewarming?

When you rent, you are moving into a new home and you are taking possession of a property, be it for a determined or undetermined amount of time. Now of course, renters use your judgment. Is your rental a place where you will be short term? Or is it that place where you’re settling in to stay? If the answer is the latter, you have the right to want to celebrate this turning point in your life. For the sake of all renters, throw a housewarming! An apartment is a legitimate home. And let me be clear; call it a housewarming. Don’t start making excuses to your friends and family like “I just wanted to

get together” or “I’m only renting, but wanted to show you my new place anyway.” No, no, no… you are having a housewarming because you want to celebrate moving into your new home! DON’T BUG ME GET RID OF CREEPY, CRAWLY HOUSE GUESTS It can happen to anyone at any time: you’re sitting in the living room peacefully watching TV and munching on popcorn when suddenly you’re hit by an unwanted guest — a carpenter ant. The lowly black insect may seem lonely crawling along the edge of your coffee table, but you know that if there is one, there have got to be more. Household pests can crop up in some rental properties. These opportunistic pests live anywhere they can find food, water, warmth and shelter. Some pests can become a serious health hazard and your landlord is responsible for getting rid of them. If you’ve already tried to fix the problem with a product from the hardware

store but have had no success, tell your landlord. He or she is obliged to hire a professional exterminator. Most landlords want to help, as it’s in their best interest to keep their properties clean. If your landlord is reluctant to do anything, the local

health department can aid you in handling the pest problem. Although you may never be disturbed by carpenter ants or silverfish, it’s a good idea to learn how to identify pests, their risks and how to get rid of them.

SILVERFISH Long, flat silver-grey body. Broad at head and narrow at rear. Move quickly. Prefer damp, warm areas. Active at night. Contaminate food.

BEDBUGS Small, oval and flattened. Reddish-brown. Active at night. Bites leave minor to severe lumps or swelling and can cause bleeding.

ELIMINATION/PREVENTION Clean and air bedding. Replace mattresses that are infected. Vacuum frequently.

CARPENTER ANTS Large black ant or black with red marks. Active at night. Prefer moist areas. Live in walls, ceilings, doors and insulation. Destroy wood structures by tunnelling. Carry germs with their bite.

ELIMINATION/PREVENTION Keep areas dry. Remove food sources. Seal honey, jelly, fruit and meat. Keep areas around the outside of house free of wood. Spread diatomaceous earth along the foundation. If an infestation is present, locate and destroy the nest.
