EDITOR’S NOTE

GET CREATIVE WITH YOUR NEW SPACE While it’s true I have been a homeowner, the real truth is that I am a renter at heart. As the years go by, I admit to being less fond of the moving process, but the prospect of finding a new place to live still fills me with excitement. Yes, many people like to stay in the same place for a long time, and I get that, especially when children are in the mix. But as my children grew, their needs changed, and for me, that meant finding a new rental. When they were youngsters, I wanted a home with a yard, close to parks where they could run around and play. It also had to be near their elementary school. In high school and college, living close to public transit suited us better. That way they could easily get to school and friends on their own, and downtown for weekend entertainment. When one child moved into her own place, we needed less space and so the hunt for a new apartment began. Each move gave us the opportunity to decorate and get creative. It didn’t have to be anything big or expensive; a new side table, window treatments, or something as simple as putting the furniture in a new configuration. Moving allowed my children to make any place they lived in feel comfortable and homey. Winnipeg is a great city for renters. Let Renters Guide help you find your next great space to get creative.

Kathryn Kusyszyn You’re taking the plunge into entrepreneurship. Now you need to decide where to set up your workspace in your home. Here are some considerations for effectiveness and productivity. First off is the actual location. How much space is required and the type of space available will dictate where to set up shop. A den, spare bedroom or mudroom can easily suit this purpose and claiming part of a basement could work as well. Consider converting a large foyer or the space under a staircase or

enclose a porch or a balcony. At the very least, designate a corner of one room as work-only space. Make a list of the needs and desires for the type of work you’re going to perform. You may prefer features such as privacy, quiet, optimal ventilation, natural light, bright colours, artwork and an inspiring view. Choose the elements that are crucial for you to be at your best. Fulfill the needs first; the majority of desires will follow. Ensure there is enough power to handle a space heater or fan, computer, printer, desk lighting and whatever else you need all at once. Beware of tripping hazards like extension cords and power bars. If you will be seeing clients or colleagues in your space, there are

other considerations. Check the local bylaws regarding signage and parking. The front walk will need to be well maintained, with snow and ice removed when necessary. Clear entryways and preferably a direct route to the workspace rather than through the living space are ideal. Entering a workspace that meets your needs allows the mind to focus.
