When it comes to rentals, we all have questions — from the rules of renting, to leases, pets, sublets and more. Each province has its own act governing rental and tenancy rules and laws. If you want real answers to your questions, you need to go right to the source — the governing body. Whether you’ve got a small issue or a very serious problem, it’s likely that you’re not the first person to experience it. In fact, whatever it is, it’s probably covered by your province’s act. So if you think you have your own solution, think again. It may not be the correct legal route to solving your problem. For example, many people think they can withhold rent to get the landlord to fix something. In reality, if you withhold rent, it may give the landlord grounds to evict you. You’re not allowed to withhold rent unless you’ve got a ruling against your landlord through the board. Most landlords want to solve issues amicably. But if that’s not the case, check your residential tenancy act. It sets out what your legal entitlements and remedies are. And you don’t always have to go to court. You can opt for mediation as an intermediary step. Often a quick call or search will help with the answers you need. And when it’s time to make a move, let Renters Guide help. You don’t need to spend your hard-earned money on expensive storage solutions – chances are, you may have the thrifty answers in your home already! Use what you have. Get creative. Before rushing out to buy bins and baskets, look around your home for containers you can re-purpose. Here are some ideas: » Use egg cartons or ice cube trays to organize earring sets, cuff
links or hair accessories. » Try empty plastic baby-wipe containers for crayons, first aid or sewing supplies, and they stack easily on a shelf. » Empty baby food jars are good for touch-up paint, spare buttons, or screws and nails. » Re-purpose a mug holder into a scarf or baseball cap holder. » Empty tissue boxes can hold plastic grocery bags or, with the top cut off, packets of gravy and instant soup. » Pre-washed salad bags are perfect for storing special occasion shoes, keeping them visible yet dust-free. Eliminate the clothes you don’t wear to make room for new items. Use the “one in – one out”
rule: For every item you bring home, let go of one. Corral coin clutter. Do you have loose change in every part of your home? Grab a clear jar and label it Fun Funds. Deposit those coins. Helping friends move Jennifer Braun The year’s most popular moving dates are coming up. I want to suggest you actually consider helping a friend move. Why? Because it won’t be as bad as you think, and your fellow renter would really appreciate it. If a friend asks you to help them move, it does not mean you will be facilitating the entire move. In fact, I really do not suggest relying on friends for a complete move, but rather for a pair of helping hands. There are many ways you can help with a move, including before the move, during the move and
even after the move. Getting personal belongings organized and neatly packed into boxes is actually half the work. Moving also involves a lot of cleaning – be it the old place or the new place that still needs to be vacuumed and dusted before bringing in furniture. Then, after all that work, there’s unpacking and getting organized. So, before you say no to helping with a move, consider asking your friend what they need help with. Your strength at some point may be needed, but just being there to help pack, clean and organize can also be a big help. All that being said, helping friends move still isn’t the most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. That’s why I say
