A Family Collection | A National Museum | An International Treasure House

The Wallace Collection is a national museum in an historic London town house. The collection was acquired principally in the nineteenth century by the third and fourth Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace. In the twenty-nine galleries are unsurpassed displays of French eighteenth-century paintings, furniture and porcelain together with superb Old Master paintings. A magnificent collection of princely arms and armour is shown in three galleries and there are further important displays of gold boxes, miniatures, sculpture and Medieval and Renaissance works of art. Treasure of the Month Highlights great works of art in the Wallace Collection

Painted enamel plates with scenes from the story of Joseph, France, Limoges, ‘IC’ workshop, c.1600 The story of Joseph in the biblical book of Genesis is packed with dramatic events and emotional turmoil. These two plates were originally part of a set of twelve depicting episodes from the narrative. The prolific workshop using the mark ‘IC’ produced several sets of plates on this theme. Talks: Suzanne Higgott, 10 and 25 June at 1pm

July

Lustred maiolica dish, Women Bathing, Maestro Giorgio Andreoli’s workshop, Italy, 1525 This exquisite dish depicts a group of women enjoying the cooling waters of a shady and secluded woodland pool, set within a border of elaborate grotesque ornament. Its vibrant palette is enhanced by the rich metallic iridescence of red and gold lustre, also used to great effect on the back. Talks: Suzanne Higgott, 1 and 23 July at 1pm

August

Scallop-shaped snuff box, Jean Ducrollay, Paris, 1744 This cleverly designed gold box combines the shape of a shell with the fan-tail feathers of a peacock. It was used for snuff, a powdered tobacco much used by the aristocracy in the 18th century. A wonderful example of Ducrollay’s craftsmanship, it would have been a prized possession of the duc d’Aumont (1709–82), who once owned it. Talks: Carmen Holdsworth Delgado, 6 and 20 August at 1pm

The Discovery of Paris: Watercolours by Early NineteenthCentury British Artists

Treasures from the Barber Institute of Fine Arts

20 June – 15 September 2013

16 May – 1 September 2013

Focusing on the period c.1802–40 and featuring sixty watercolours, plus a dozen preparatory drawings and associated prints, this exhibition includes outstanding works by Turner, Girtin and Bonington, and other artists who are now less familiar, such as Thomas Shotter Boys and William Callow. Paris had been painted many times before, but never more beautifully than by nineteenthcentury British artists, and very rarely by artists of such high standing in their own countries. Their styles vary widely, from the crystalline precision of Thomas Shotter Boys, whose superb watercolours will be some of the stars of the show, to the incomparable verve of Turner at his most intense. Rarely seen works have been lent by great museums including Tate, the V&A, the British Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, as well as several private collectors.

The Barber Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Birmingham was founded in December 1932 by Hattie, Lady Barber. She stipulated The Butleigh Salt, that works of art acquired London, 1606/7, for it should be 'of that silver gilt, © The standard of quality required Henry Barber Trust, by the National Gallery and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University the Wallace Collection'. To of Birmingham mark its 80th anniversary, the Barber is lending key works this summer to both the National Gallery (paintings) and the Wallace Collection (sculpture and decorative arts). Objects lent to the Wallace include an ancient Greek helmet, a superb Jacobean silvergilt salt, and a precious bloodstone bowl.

Exhibition talks every Thursday and the first Saturday of the month at 1pm

Conservation Display True Colours Revealed – the treatment of a chest of drawers for Marie-Antoinette Until early 2014

Thomas Shotter Boys, The Boulevard des Capucines at the corner with the Rue de la Paix, 1833, © The Trustees of the British Museum, detail

This display examines the recent conservation treatment of a chest of drawers (commode) made for Queen Marie-Antoinette by Jean-Henri Riesener and now on display in the Study at the Wallace Collection. Treatment has revealed how this remarkable piece of furniture might have looked when the Queen took delivery of it at Versailles in 1780, for use in her cabinet intérieur, her most private room. Originally vibrantly coloured, the woods were chosen for their highly coloured hues or stained blue, yellow, pink and green to match the décor of the room. Exquisite pieces of furniture such as this enable us to glimpse something of the beauty of the original scheme of the cabinet intérieur. See calendar for details of talks on the special displays

Special Talks & Lectures Free, no need to book unless otherwise stated. Talks in the galleries are strictly limited to 25 people with places allocated on a first come first served basis. Please see the calendar for details of further themed talks by Curators, Conservators and Guide Lecturers
