Bro. Jamel Vanderburg (Xi Spr. ‘08) , a graduate student researcher, delved into the intricacies of government response to natural disasters at the recent International Graduate Student Conference in Hawaii Titled "Distorted Disasters and How Policy is Perceived," Vanderburg's study scrutinized the disconnect between governmental actions and community needs during crises
Drawing from interviews with survivors of Hurricane Katrina and the Maui wildfires, Vanderburg shed light on the persistent discrepancies in disaster relief efforts By examining conditions preceding these calamities, the study unearthed insights into potential shortcomings in governmental responses
Vanderburg's research holds significant implications for policy formulation and disaster management strategies, advocating for a more personalized and equitable approach to allocating resources. A Melodic Masterpiece: 'Watch Night' Production Soars at Ground Zero
A Tribute to Artistic Triumph and Cultural Significance
Friday, January 12th, 2024
The Baltimore Sun has praised Bro. Ken Alston Jr. for his "heart-piercingly beautiful voice," Watch Night, coconceived and written by Marc Bamuthi Joseph, and co-conceived, choreographed, and directed by Bill T Jones, features music by Tamar-kali Brown and dramaturgy by Lauren Whitehead
Alston ’07, an initiate of the Delta Lambda Chapter and currently serving the Kappa Xi Lambda Chapter, Wall Street Alphas, was cast by the Telsey Company for his rare vocal type. After participating in the workshop in 2022, Alston secured the role of "Super/Natural," a character that requires two singers with unique voice types to create an ethereal and otherworldly effect.
What sets this performance apart is the venue itself. The production took place at the Perelman Performing Arts Center (PACNYC), located at the heart of Ground Zero World Trade Center in New York. This inaugural theatrical production at PACNYC marks a significant milestone for the arts community.
Brother Alston takes great pride in representing his city and his organization at a venue so close to the moniker of his current chapter. The thriving arts scene within Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is vast and we support and showcase Alpha Arts across the globe.
