theeditor Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Wadham Lodge for this afternoon’s Ryman League Division 1 North match with AFC Sudbury. We wish their players, supporters and officials a pleasant stay with us. We also extend a warm welcome to this afternoon’s team of match officials. It’s been a long while since our last home game, and I trust that you all had an enjoyable festive period, helped most certainly by our 1-0 victory over Wroxham last weekend. Because of the two postponements over Christmas, the fixtures have started to pile up, so much so that we’ll be playing eight games in January. If we can build on our win at Wroxham, there’s no reason why these eight games can’t be used as a springboard to pull ourselves out of the bottom three. However, if we continue to struggle through them, the situation could prove to be very grave indeed. As I expected, Brentwood have put a few results together and hauled themselves out of the relegation places, and were replaced by Erith & Belvedere. Wroxham’s defeat by us means they’re now down to 21st, and should the bottom three sides pick up a few points in the next few weeks,
a whole number of clubs could be drawn down into the relegation dog-fight. Ware have a new Chairman and manager, who have left Broxbourne Borough after only half a season in charge. I sincerely hope that they haven’t left Broxbourne in too bad a state, and that the Herts club will be able to continue untroubled for the rest of the season. This does however meant that Ware will be looking to get themselves any way possible. They lost
andrzej perkins: 3
3-1 to Heybridge last week, but were much improved on recent Ware performances by all accounts. It is at this stage in the season where results really do begin to make a difference. Put a decent run together, and we’ll be back amongst the rest of the bottom half of the table. But if we fail to do so, our days at this level will be numbered.

Then on 72 Cowely doubled Sudbury’s advantage.
Sam Clarke A former Gt Wakering player, He was allowed to bounce off three defenders before curling the ball home past the stranded Myers. In the dying embers of the game, Sudbury confirmed their win with another longrange effort from Forshaw.

thetreesurgeon Today we play our first Saturday fixture of 2014 against AFC Sudbury (always allowing for the inclement weather that decimated most of the Christmas matches in Division One North) Sudbury are once again sitting in mid table, which given their previous achievements in their previous League seems unlikely. Every season they start in the Ryman league, myself and I think almost every other club, are expecting them to be up in the promotion race (also in previous years they have always been the bookies favourites for the title before a ball is kicked). I think it demonstrates just how tough this Division is to get out of (or in our case this season - to stay in). We had a good Christmas period with an excellent away win at Wroxham, after the Boxing day postponement, in a game where neither side looked particularly good defensively and both sides missed a hat full of chances But, importantly, we managed to win the game, when in the past, this season we have tended to be the side who conceded the only goal in a tight game and we achieved our first “double” of the season.
Hopefully, our visit to Redbridge on New Years Day has improved our points tally even further. Today, I want to reflect on something I was already aware of, but, that has been brought home to me in recent weeks, about the state of our task to re-establish our club as a leading light in the Borough firstly and in non league in general. A couple of weeks before Christmas we reenacted that good old Christmas tradition of sending the children up into the loft to rescue as many of the old Christmas decorations as possible (I say children - the youngest is in his twenties). In between tangles lights, mountains of tinsel and the odd bauble, they also discovered hidden treasure - a pile of old programmes and one of my old scrapbooks with match cuttings from the 1980’s There used to be a programme on the BBC in the 1990’s called “The Rock & Roll Years” - which featured a different year each week, with news clips with a soundtrack of the popular “hits” of that year. I loved watching those programmes but, after the initial enjoyment had subsided, I was left with a very hollow feeling as it brought home my own
mortality when I realised how many years ago that featured year was in the past. It was the same feeling with the scrapbook - the 1980’s was a time of almost continued success under George Wakeling when we played as Leyton - Wingate and after enjoying reading about all the wins and success, I longed to be back there again. But, the point I am getting to (rather slowly you will feel) was the attendances at those games. A few 400 and 500 crowds in games against Leytonstone - Ilford (which you could understand, being a local derby and both sides doing really well) - another in the same region for the FA Trophy games against Boston United and Macclesfield, once again, no surprise - but, what really took my breath away, was a figure in excess of 300 for an Essex Senior Cup game against Barking. Now, I know that the Essex Senior Cup in those days was still reasonably highly regarded and not the mid-week “fill in” it has become in recent times, but, nevertheless, that is still some turn out - what would we give to get a couple of those size crowds this season. Our Committee has to manage on 50 people if we are lucky and out of that
charlie ward: 9 we still have find officials expenses as well as other standard running cost for match days, like the electricity for the floodlights and buildings and hot water for the showers etc. So any time anyone gets the hump with the way the club is bring run, just put things into perspective - it is a miracle that given the rapid decline in interest and
attendances at our games (in common with many other clubs in our area at our level) we are able to keep going at all. I just hope that today we will see our numbers boosted by the additional travelling support that AFC Sudbury always seem to bring and that we will repaying them with typical hospitality off the field, but, a thumping on it
leaving them to travel back pointless. Now that Christmas is over, all that good will has disappeared. Three points today will do much to bolster our confidence and hope we can still be playing Ryman League football once again, to the hardly fifty people who bother to turn at the majority of our games.

what’s in a name? stuart hamonds WHAT’S IN a name? Not a lot if you’re one of the myriad of Non-League and lower Football League players who share the same christian and surnames, but it can get confusing. Take last Saturday for example. I get the St Albans City teamsheet for their FA Trophy second round tie with Cambridge United at Clarence Park, and find that Danny Green is on the bench - but then he’s not, as striker Mark Nwokeji feels an injury in the warmup and the two swap places. Now, is this the Danny Green who John Still plucked from Bishop’s Stortford’s right-wing when he was Dagenham & Redbridge manager, and turned him into a League One player? Or is it the ‘other’ Danny Green who went from Billericay to Dagenham a year later, and who also played on the right flank, and had been at Bishop’s Stortford previously. No, because the first is now at Charlton Athletic, the second is at
Maidenhead and a local reporter informs me that this one came from Harpenden Town, has spent time on loan at Potters Bar Town this term and plays rightback or central midfield. But, lo and behold, he comes into the team on the right wing! These lads’ stats have all probably merged into one on the internet – and there are others, like the two Mike Greens who both play for Gloucester City, or the fatherson, managerplayer combinations we’ve seen over the years with the Craig Edwards at Grays,
Chelmsford and Billericay, and Chris Kinnears at Dover.
There are the two Steve Browns who have both managed or coached at Dover, and it must be something about the name Danny, because boy, just like with the Greens I’ve had trouble with the two Danny Rowes up north. It doesn’t help that these same-namers tend to
frequent the same part of the country, and often the same clubs. So one Danny Rowe has played up front for Barrow and Stockport - and so has the other! Oh what fun it was to try and decipher which was which when they were both at County and going by the names of Danny L Rowe and Danny M Rowe. One is now at Lincoln City, and I think it was the one I once interviewed in the middle of a purple patch at Edgeley Park about his formative years at Manchester United. The other, last Sunday’s copy of The NLP informed me, came on as sub in Macclesfield’s 1-0 win over Salisbury. But who the ‘L’ is who I have not really got a clue! THE OTHER name game I like are the famous names – or ones very similar – in the NonLeague ranks. I was impressed by Stourbridge left-back Jamie Oliver at Stevenage recently. Thankfully he kept his clothes on, but couldn’t come up with a recipe for 15
minutes of FA Cup fame. Another one who starred in this year’s qualifying rounds is Brighouse Town’s Nick Jaggar, while Jason Bourne has reigned supreme during Tunbridge Wells’ recent FA Vase efforts. At Chester we used to have the original Mark Wright and David Cameron, as manager and striker respectively, while the various Non-League versions of Michael Jackson and Robbie Williams have provided plenty of entertaining headlines over the years. See how many grass-roots celebs you spot over the festive period and let me know at stuarthammonds@gmail.com or @stuhammonds_NLP Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

CLASSIC PROGRAMME Forest have had the pleasure of a few encounters with AFC Sudbury in recent years. I know that the Beer Hunter has almost missed some of those due to being unavoidably delayed en route to their ground! In 1999 an amalgamation of Sudbury Town and Sudbury Wanderers resulted in the formation of today’s AFC Sudbury. As Leyton Wingate we did meet the old Sudbury Town club back in October 1988 in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Challenge Cup. A game we lost by two goals to one, scored by Stevie Lane. At the time we were comfortably positioned, midtable of the Premier Division of the Vauxhall-Opel League. Following on from a poor start to the season having picking up only four points from the first five games, although we were now on an unbeaten run of nine games, under manager, George Wakeling, who had a very good side which included Peter Mills in goal, Steve’s Robinson, Hamburger and Lane and Paul Taylor – the scorer of the last ever goal in the old Amateur Cup Final at Wembley. Our defeat did come as a shock as we had cruised past Halstead Town in the previous round scoring seven

goals. True Sudbury Town were top of their league and had reached the semi-final of the FA Vase the previous season. The other big news of the week was LeytonstoneIlford’s attempt to redevelope
the old Chingford Town ground which had been turned down by the Epping Forest Conservators. One of the many problems facing non-league clubs in this area.

thegreatest of great escapes They say those who are adrift in the relegation area by Christmas are doomed for the drop, but that’s not always the case. Here are some of the all-time greatest escapes: 5) Brighton ,1997 Brighton were 11 points adrift at the foot of Division Three in December 1996. Everything that could go wrong was going wrong, including plans to sell their stadium off and a two-point penalty following a pitch invasion. The Seagulls went on a tremendous run from March and ensured they stayed in the Football League with a 1-1 draw against Hereford on the final day of the season.
4) West Ham, 2007 It all seems so long ago when Carlos Tevez scored a winning goal against future employers Manchester United to keep West Ham in the Premier League and relegate Sheffield United. The Argentinian striker, whose transfer was the subject of close legal scrutiny, was the Hammers’ talisman in a six-week run to avoid the drop.
3) West Brom, 2005 With the odds stacked against the Baggies on the final day of the season, they
did the only thing they could and beat Portsmouth 2-0. Elsewhere, Crystal Palace drew with Charlton, while Norwich and Southampton both lost. West Brom became
the first club to be bottom of the Premier League at Christmas and avoid relegation. 2) Oldham Athletic, 1993 Most teams would be happy to overturn an eight-point
1)
deficit in the final seven weeks of the season, but Oldham did it in seven days! Joe Royle’s men won their final three matches of the season against titlecontenders Aston Villa, Liverpool and
Southampton. Safety was secured on the final day of the season as they defeated the Saints 4-3 in an end-to-end encounter.
Eintracht Frankfurt, 1999 It was calculators all round for Frankfurt in 1999. They were four points behind with four games left, but three wins in a row gave them the slimmest of slim chances of survival. On the last day of the
season they needed to beat Champions League hopefuls Kaiserslautern and, if results went against them elsewhere, score five goals. With time ticking away in the firsthalf and the score at 1-1, Frankfurt’s only hope was to score three more goals to pick off Nurnberg who were 2-0 down against Freiburg. They scored three goals in 12 second half minutes to put them tantalisingly close to safety, only for Nurnberg to pull a goal back in the 86th minute of their game. But there was one final twist as Jan Aage Fjortoft netted to keep Frankfurt up on goals scored. So with all this in mind, maybe it isn’t all doom and gloom for Forest. Stranger things have happened and hopefully next year Forest will feature in one of these lists. Sam Puleston

STORM DAMAGE SEES INVICTA`S GROUND SHUT Much of the stand roof was blown off by the gales which lashed the Kent Coast earlier in the week and has ended up halfway down the slope above the Polo Ground changing rooms. The club`s landlords Shepway Council closed the ground at The Fullicks Stadium because of the danger to the public, and sadly, as much as anything because of the Christmas ‘recess’, the club have been unable to do very much to rectify the situation in the short-time. Chairman Mark Jenner said: “The next stage is to get contractors on site to make the stand safe. I do not believe volunteers should be doing any more than picking up debris as we carry no insurance for building work or demolition and this is serious stuff that needs to be done by qualified contractors.”
