Photo: andrzej perkins Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Wadham Lodge for this evening’s Ryman League Cup 2nd round match with Harlow Town. We welcome Harlow’s players, officials and supporters and hope they have a pleasant stay with us. We also extend a warm welcome to this evening’s team of match officials. Well, what a difference a few weeks can make. Back in August, we were thoroughly humiliated when we went to Aveley and lost 7-0 in the FA Cup. However, we got our revenge on Saturday as we beat them 2-1 in the league to pick up our second victory of the season. I wasn’t at the game, but by all accounts (both ours and theirs), we fully deserved the three points. I think it goes
to show you that the team Turgut and Colin put together were not a million miles away from starting to turn things around. However, it cannot be denied that the influence of Robert Pattwell – our new Assistant Manager – must have had some bearing on our win at the weekend. On Saturday alone we fielded four players that Rob brought in, and I believe there are more to come. One of these players, Rak Hudson, amassed over 100 appearances for Hendon in the Premier Division, and despite still being in his midtwenties, has a wealth of experience. A few of Rob’s new signings played in a friendly match against the under 21s last Wednesday evening, and while a few of them were still
a bit out of match practice, there were some indications that we may be on the path to turn things around. I believe Hudson played as a midfielder for most of his time at Hendon, but was playing at the back in the aforementioned friendly against the under 21s. He may have been carrying a bit of timber, but his positioning was excellent and didn’t set a foot wrong all game. We’ve been under the cosh in most of the games we’ve played so far this season, and the defence’s natural reaction was understandably to launch the ball as far away as possible. In the friendly I saw, Hudson seemed to give himself a lot more time on the ball and always seemed to have the time and space to bring the ball down rather than hoof it clear at the first attempt. Saturday’s win wasn’t just down to one player – it was a team effort where everybody dug deep and fought for the three points. I’m not sure what kind of side we’ll be putting out this evening, but hopefully we’ve turned the corner and we can start putting a few decent results together and claw ourselves away from the bottom of the table.

thetreesurgeon Tonight we entertain Harlow Town in the League Cup which at least gives us relief from our woes in the League. Harlow seem to be on an upward trend at the moment, after a pretty awful season last term, where they actually finished one off the bottom. We, on the other hand, are obviously in bottom spot with a lot to do in the coming months to get ourselves out of the dreaded drop zone, but, this match will give us a chance to see what we can do without League points at stake. We will want to do better than our last cup game when we were blown away in the FA Trophy at Folkstone. Last Saturday, we had the daunting task of travelling to Aveley, who have already given us a good hiding in the FA Cup. Because these notes had to be forwarded prior to the weekend, I do not know what the result was and can only hope we some somehow managed to get points from the game. Everyone at club knows the situation and has different opinions about how to put things right, but, only the management can put things right and they are so obviously working hard to make the changes to get us points.
It will take a big turnaround, but, we all know the people at the club will work tirelessly to see the team prosper. We have some talented players in the team and if we can get some experience into the squad to give them a helping hand - we just need to start being tougher in games defending properly for the entire game and not fall prey to the collapse we saw in the final ten minutes or so, at Folkstone where we shipped an incredible three goals. We have shown that we can get goals, albeit, inconsistently, but, every time we score a few, we seem to spring several leaks at the other end - also, at times when we struggle to find the net, we seem incapable of keeping a clean sheet. I think we also need to be aware of too much changing leads to inconsistency performances - players need time to settle in and they especially need time, if, as is the case with our group of players, the majority have hardly had any experience at our level of football. It is hard enough for players to adjust when those around them are familiar faces, but, if they are seeing two or three new players each game.
It will be interesting to see what strength of line up’s both teams put out tonight, I dare say that Harlow will want to give a few of their squad players a game and possibly, we might see this as a chance to give run outs to a few lads who are not currently in the starting line up, but, I would prefer to see us with what we consider to be our strongest line up (whatever that may be), as I have said, to try and get a bit of consistency in our team. Whatever happens, I have a feeling it will be an open game, with both sides going for the win, with the result having to be settled tonight. If we can get a victory tonight, it might be just the springboard we need to start us on an upward trend.

thebeerhunter Well, at least the pain of the Folkestone result was slightly eased by the friendly welcome we received and the choice of three good bottled beers in their main bar. A warm welcome to tonight’s visitors from Harlow, whom we are due to visit in the League on November 9th. It’s a long hike to their ground from the station, and an even longer hike from the two nearest real-ale pubs which are on the other side of the tracks in Burnt Mill Lane. The Moorhen is visible from the station – a big food-and-families oriented pub with a garden, with Greene King on handpump. However, the Beer Hunter prefers the Dusty Miller, a very pleasant McMullen’s house, again with a garden and offering good food – but that’s even further up the same road and you need to allow a good 40 minutes for the walk to the ground (which has a bar, but no real ale on our last visit). If any of our visitors tonight have other Harlow pub recommendations, let us know! Prior to that, however, we have away trips to Maldon (in the Essex Senior Cup) and Tilbury. Delightful, historic riverside Maldon is the Beer Hunter’s favourite Essex town, and the best pub in it – the Blue Boar – is
conveniently situated right by the town-centre bus stop from Chelmsford. This splendid 14th century coaching inn has oak beams, a massive fireplace with real fire, hunting trophies on the walls (hmmm…...) and its own Farmer’s Ales, brewed in the stable block behind the pub and served straight from the barrel. Voted local CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2010 and 2011, meals and snacks are also served. The only drawback is that it’s at the opposite end of town from the football ground, about 35 minutes’ walk away – and once installed here, it can be hard to tear yourself away! Allow a bit longer, however, and you can stop off en route at the Queens Arms by the river on The Hythe. Although the emphasis here is on food, there’s a cosy small bar to the right of the entrance, and a good selection of beers to savour while enjoying the riverside views (eg Adnams, Timothy Taylor’s, Dark Star and others). If you’ve made an afternoon of it to explore this fascinating old town before the game in the evening, stroll along the riverbank to the statue commemorating the Battle of Maldon on its isolated promontory – an atmospheric spot in which to
contemplate the mysteries of life, football and everything. The club bar has a Greene King handpump, but alas it’s not always in use. Atmospheric in a rather different way is Tilbury, particularly down by the jetty (thank you, Feelgoods fans!) for the Gravesend Ferry – and that’s a trip well worth making too. However, the football ground is on the other side of town and has no pubs anywhere near it. Indeed, beer hunters are advised to get off the train one stop early at Grays, cross the tracks and head down towards the river, where you will find two cracking pubs on opposite corners of the same road junction. The White Hart is a big, lively pub with two house beers (Crouch Vale and Sharp’s), three guest ales and a range of Belgian bottled beers, while the Theobald Arms is a small, quiet traditional local with an everchanging selection featuring local independent breweries. It also has a highly-unusual hexagonal pool table. Both are former Local Pub of the Year winners, so you can’t go wrong with either. From here it’s a short walk back to Grays Bus Station and the bus to Tilbury’s ground, where there is a bar but no real ale.
