david chapman: 3 Its nice to see our old friends Erith & Belvedere once again. Surprisingly we do have quite a bit of history between us. We actually played the Belverdere club in the old London League way back in 1922. This was the year before that club joined Erith to become Erith & Belverdere. The first encounter between Leyton and Erith & Belverdere was in the London Senior Cup in January 1938. This game ended suddenly abandoned when the the Dere’s were winning one nil. Supporters really got their money’s worth as the replayed game ended in our defeat by 6 goals to 5 with the Dere’s last three goals coming in the final period of extra time. The game must have ended in a gentlemanly handshake as the following season, played under war-time regulations, saw home and away friendlies played over Christmas Day and Boxing Day. In more recent times our paths have crossed again in the Athenian League and last about ten years ago when we flirted with the Southern League. The programme comes from a war-time fixture in the London Senior Cup which we won by 5

goals to 1. Both sides played whoever could turn out on the day. For Erith their attack was led by twentyyear-old Stan Aldous. Stan later became a professional with our neighbours Leyton Orient. Our side was really

make-do-and-mend with Bert Gibbs in goal and Jock Watson as captain. Up front we had the help of a couple of right Charlie’s in Phillips and Hodges, both from Eton Manor.

thetreesurgeon Today we renew our rivalry with Erith & Belvedere, who were our opponents for several years in both the Athenian and isthmian League in the past. They are back in the Ryman League after promotion from the Kent League, so congratulations to them on that achievement. That’s about as gracious as I hope it gets today, as I want us to send them away empty handed come 4.45 this evening. They are not perhaps as high up the table as they would like and if we can win today, it will not only boost our chances of getting off the bottom of the table, but, keep them nervously looking over their shoulder, at the teams like us in the chasing pack of clubs, trying to get away from the relegation zone. Last Saturday we had a similar confrontation against another newly promoted club, Barkingside and let ourselves down badly. It was a substandard performance from us, especially, in the first half, where we gave the ball away cheaply and seemed not to be able to get any constructive moves going. The fact that they were only one goal ahead at half time, when things could have been much worse, was enough of an incentive for us

to lift our game a notch or two and there is no doubt we were dominant in the second half. But, running a game is no good, if there is not an end product and despite a lot of huffing and puffing, we ran out of steam and allowed our visitors to stroll away with all three points. There were mitigating circumstances, in the fact that we lost bot Richard Worrell and Rak Hudson to injury from our mid-week cup game and we definitely did miss their influence on our team and two of our new signings, Lee & Dominic, both strikers, we injured and unavailable respectively. The good news is that all of our absentees are expected to be available for selection today and that has to give us a better chance of getting a win today. It is all very well getting a good win over teams like Aveley, but, the really important wins are against teams like Barkingside and Erith, who currently, are involved in the same region of the table as ourselves. Today, I hope we will have learnt lessons from last week and start brightly and take the game to our visitors and not give them a comfortable start to the game – we need to impose ourselves, look sharp and not give them time to settle, get

an early goal, if we can, then make sure we keep them on the back foot by continuing to attack them. With all players available, we now have competition for places all over the field and congratulations to the management team for strengthening the squad so we do have genuine competition for all departments, which can only be a good thing. If a player feels he has no serious challenger for his place, he will become complacent and relax his standards and that effects the whole team. We should not have that happening now, with new places coming in to fight for the shirt of those already in the team. Without trying to put too much pressure on the team, games like today are vital to us, so we do not lose touch with teams above us – we should feel we have a chance of winning (with all due respect to Erith) and not be feeling we face an impossible task. We all know we have several players with bundles of skill, but, what we need to prove is that we have the strength of character to battle when things are not going according to plan and have the toughness to get through games on sheer bloody

on our travels: 5 mindedness. If the management do bring in a few more new faces, it will obviously take a while for them to fit in, but, in truth, we have not got loads of time for them to get on the same wavelength of the side, so hopefully, the lack of midweek game will have helped them acclimatise as much as possible to the team pattern of play and let’s hope they are quick learners.

We are not dead and buried yet, but, it is obvious that we have one hell of a battle on to reach and overtake the three or four clubs above us – Redbridge managed it last season and we have to show the same tenacity as them, picking up valuable points from games, they were perhaps, not expected to get anything from and winning those “dreaded six pointers” along the way.

I am looking forward to seeing the new lads in action and some much need goals going in – now we seem to be more durable at the back, we just need to ramp up our goal scoring and I think we will start to see the benefits. Hopefully, today we will “turn up” right from the start and send the visitors from Kent, home empty handed.

thebeerhunter A very warm welcome to our visitors from Erith & Belvedere, for our first meeting with them in this League. We wish them all the best for their first season in the Ryman (except for today of course!). Our next away trip is to Maldon & Tiptree Utd in the Essex Senior Cup. Delightful, historic riverside Maldon is the Beer Hunter’s favourite Essex town, and the best pub in it – the Blue Boar – is conveniently situated right by the town-centre bus stop from Chelmsford. This splendid 14th century coaching inn has oak beams, a massive fireplace with real fire, hunting trophies on the walls (hmmm…...) and its own Farmer’s Ales, brewed in the stable block behind the pub and served straight from the barrel. Voted local CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2010 and 2011, meals and

snacks are also served. The only drawback is that it’s at the opposite end of town from the football ground, about 35 minutes’ walk away – and once installed here, it can be hard to tear yourself away! Allow a bit longer, however, and you can stop off en route at the Queens Arms by the river on The Hythe. If you’ve made an afternoon of it to explore this fascinating old town before the game in the evening, stroll along the riverbank to the statue commemorating the Battle of Maldon on its isolated promontory – an atmospheric spot in which to contemplate the mysteries of life, football and everything. The club bar has a Greene King handpump, but alas it’s not always in use. Atmospheric in a rather different way is Tilbury, particularly down by the jetty (thank you, Feelgoods fans!) for the Gravesend Ferry – and

that’s a trip well worth making too. However, the football ground is on the other side of town and has no pubs anywhere near it. Indeed, beer hunters are advised to get off the train one stop early at Grays, cross the tracks and head down towards the river, where you will find two cracking pubs on opposite corners of the same road junction. The White Hart is a big, lively pub with two house beers (Crouch Vale and Sharp’s), three guest ales and a range of Belgian bottled beers, while the Theobald Arms is a small, quiet traditional local with an everchanging selection featuring local independent breweries. It also has a highly-unusual hexagonal pool table.
