Record-breaking sum raised by Hull businesses for sailors’ children’s clothing

More than £72,000 was raised by Hull’s business community at an annual charity business lunch. The Sailors’ Children’s Society Sportsman’s Lunch on October 13 at the Double Tree by Hilton saw nearly 700 businesspeople digging deep for winter clothing grants as the cost-ofliving crisis fuelled a surge in demand for help. The urgent funds were donated through tickets, sponsorship, auctions and a raffle, beating last year’s previous record-holding figure of £55,000. The national charity, which started in Hull in 1821, supports the children of seafarers all over the country and has held the Sportsman’s Lunch for more than two decades. Guests at this year’s event, sponsored by Williamsons Solicitors and Beerhouse Vehicle Rental, were entertained by star speaker the Welsh former Rugby Union referee and television personality Nigel Owens. The auction, which raised £29,300, was hosted by Caroline Hawley from BBC One’s Bargain Hunt, who was joined by her husband, the ex-footballer John Hawley. For the third consecutive year, former Olympians Jamie Baulch and Colin Jackson attended after being inspired to provide ongoing help to the charity. Jamie hosted the silent auction and Colin donated a group training session as an auction prize which raised more than £6,000 with the winning bid going to RSM.

Natasha Barley, the organisation’s new CEO, said that the lunch was key to raising money to help those in desperate need and that she was ‘bowled over by the phenomenal result’. to right: Nick Millar, James Legal; Paul Worthy, Hamers; Nigel Owens, guest speaker; Andrew “I know how Left Manderfield, Streets Accountants; Chris Towne, the charity’s chair of trustees; Mark Campey, precious our annual Beerhouse Vehicle Rental and Bill Waddington, Williamsons Solicitors fundraising lunch is to our loyal attendees so I really wanted to make our auctioneer Caroline Hawley and our main sponsors Williamsons Solicitors and Beerhouse this one extra special. Major £31 million funding boost for Yorkshire and Humberside bus services as fare cap set to be extended

• £31 million of redirected HS2 funding confirmed for next financial year to improve bus services in Yorkshire and Humberside • Funding is the first allocation of a £1 billion investment into bus services across the North and Midlands as part of the Network North Plan • Comes as ‘Get Around for £2’ cost-of-living support scheme set to be extended from 1 November Yorkshire and Humberside is set to benefit from over £31 million of new funding to improve bus services over the next financial year, the Transport Secretary has announced today (Monday 23 October). This is the first tranche of £1 billion worth of new funding that the government is dedicating to bus services across the North and the Midlands as part of the Network North Plan - with further funding allocations to be announced in due course. While is up to local authorities in partnership with operators to decide how best to use the funding, the total £150m funding for next year across the North and Midlands is enough to support up to 25 million miles of new bus services, helping local authorities provide more regular and reliable services or cheaper fares delivered through fare initiatives and ticket price caps. The funding has only been made possible thanks to this government making the right long-term decisions for a brighter future. The reallocation of HS2 funding as part of Network North ensures that we can deliver our new £36 billion plan to

improve the daily transport connections that matter most to people, benefitting more people, in more places, more quickly. The £150 million from redirected HS2 funding is dedicated to levelling up bus services, with areas across the North and Midlands given extra support for bus services to become more frequent, more reliable, cheaper and easier to use. Local authorities may use the additional funding to reintroduce evening services to support the night time economy, increase service frequency meaning less waiting time for passengers, introduce new routes to ensure areas previously unconnected are now connected or introduce a Demand Responsive Transport service to improve connectivity in rural areas. This funding comes on top of the Government’s unprecedented investment of over £3.5 billion for the bus sector since March 2020 to support its recovery from the pandemic, drive improvements to local bus services and encourage more use of buses. The “Get Around For £2” bus fare cap scheme will also be extended again to continue to help people save money. The cap had been due to rise to £2.50 but will instead remain at £2 and continue until 31 December 2024 thanks to the redirected HS2 funding behind the new Network North plan. This takes total Government investment to cap bus fares at £2 to nearly £600 million. Since the £2 bus fare cap was introduced across the UK on 1 January 2023, millions of passengers have benefitted from lower fares. The Get Around for £2 scheme has helped cut bus fares

in England outside London by 7.4% between June 2022 and June 2023, with savings even bigger in rural areas where fares have dropped by almost 11%. According to initial analysis from a recent report published by the Department, the scheme has helped encouraged people to get back on the bus, with almost half of respondents saying the fare cap is the main reason they are using the bus more. As part of the Network North plan, we announced that we will spend £2.5 billion to fund in full the long-promised mass transit system in Leeds and West Yorkshire and we will allocate a further £4 billion for local transport across the North’s six city regions to improve connectivity in their areas, benefiting millions of people. Today also sees Yorkshire and Humberside’s Community services for older people and vulnerable passengers receive a 60% funding boost. These “life-saver” services are vital for older and vulnerable people to get to the shops, medical appointments and see loved ones. The funding increase, made through the Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG), will help keep fares down and has been hailed by charities and vulnerable passengers who have difficulty using regular buses and rely on community services to get around and combat loneliness. This boost comes as part of the Government’s nearly £260 million annual BSOG payments to support bus services in England outside of London. This also includes up to £213 million for commercial bus operators and, for the tenth year, £42 million for Local Authorities.

NG-CAD Group is on the doorstep of the region’s onshore and offshore renewable, oil and gas sectors in its new location at The Deep Business Centre where it will also be targeting general industry in a move driven by confidence and curiosity.

ENG-CAD Group was launched 15 years ago by Managing Director David Tucker, an experienced engineer who established the business in the onshore and offshore industries and expanded into sectors including renewables, marine, nuclear, utilities and food.

Graham Manning, Business Development Manager at ENG-CAD, said the company, based in Great Yarmouth, has worked in the Humber area in the past and now feels that the time is right to take a foothold on the estuary.

The company’s key engineering services include structural design and calculations, stress analysis, piping isometrics, site /plant surveying (3D scanning and Total Station), third party inspection, 3D modelling and CAD drawing.

He said: “Having worked previously with a number of businesses in the Hull and Humber area we are aware of the massive opportunities that exist here given the huge amount of ‘all sector’ industry. We also see an appetite for growth and sense that there could be room for another company here to provide the range of technical engineering and survey services that we offer.”

Graham said: “Currently, we have ten core people in the business including structural engineers, design engineers, surveyors and draughtsmen and we also use local contractors where necessary and available, including many from the Humber, Yorkshire, and North East regions. “We are dipping our toe in the water by opening an office at The Deep, where the beauty of this

That, in turn, has generated growing demand for high-quality new homes in and around Immingham.

The Port of Immingham is a key gateway for trade to and from Europe and beyond and the area is playing a key role in the Humber’s growing status as a magnet for investment, capitalising on the region’s reputation as the UK’s Energy Estuary.

The site already has outline planning approval for 525 homes, so the new application is seeking consent for the detailed design and layout of the development.

amily-owned Beal has submitted a planning application for more than 500 new homes on a 57-acre site at Immingham in North East Lincolnshire.

The proposed development will provide a range of two, three and four-bedroom homes to support major investment in the area and underlines the company’s commitment to economic development within the region.

The south bank of the Humber is home to a series of blue chip businesses, including Ørsted, Phillips 66, Centrica and Wren Kitchens, with many of them investing in new facilities and projects, creating new, skilled jobs in the area.

East Yorkshire-based Beal has submitted a “reserved matters” planning application to North East Lincolnshire Council for 525 homes, with landscaping, areas of public open space and associated works, on land off Stallingborough Road, close to the centre of Immingham.

The proposed development features a wide variety of homes, from two-bedroom terraced starter homes to four-bedroom detached properties, reflecting local demand and catering for a broad range of homebuyers.

10

Beal Homes The Greenways Beal Homes is at the forefront of regeneration across the region, including by delivering the £210m The Greenways development in Goole.

Beal Chief Executive Richard Beal said: “This application sets out our plans to bring hundreds of much-needed, highquality new homes to Immingham. “It represents a major vote of confidence in the housing market in the town and the wider area. We see Immingham as a place with strong pent-up demand for new homes as well as potential for further growth, driven by major investment on the south bank of the Humber. “We propose to deliver this development over coming years, meaning we will be investing millions of pounds into the area year after year, creating new jobs in construction and supporting services. “The plans are for a wide range of properties, including starter homes that will enable local first-time buyers to take their first step onto the housing ladder.”

Launching the Waterline Summit 2023, this event will bring together international speakers, innovative thinkers, and industry experts as well as key government figures to discuss the crucial role the Humber region must play as the UK’s biggest carbon emitter with the greatest decarbonisation potential.

Net Zero Humber: How far we have come

Positioning the Humber as central to the global climate challenge facing world leaders and connecting the Humber globally. As we launch our 5th consecutive Waterline Summit, our first event will explore the core themes such as adaptation & resilience, sustainable finance, built environment, offshore wind, carbon capture and the energy transition. Aligning with the aims of COP28, we will take a look at our regional progress made so far, discussing the progress and impact of actions taken by our local businesses and communities, as well as identifying opportunities for action where there are gaps. Businesses large and small will come together with academics, industry experts and young people, to learn, discuss and tackle the greatest challenge of our time, as we all work together to reach net zero. Host: Clare Hayward MBE DL, Chair (Interim), NP11 Keynote Speaker (Online): The Rt Hon Chris Skidmore MP, Chair Net Zero Review Panelists: • Henri Murison, Chief Executive, Northern Powerhouse Partnership • Corrine Barry, East Coast Director, RWE • Arianna Abdul-Nour, Co-Chair, Cop28 FLN Delegation 2023 • Professor Briony McDonagh, Professor of Environmental Humanities and Interim Director of the Energy and Environment Institute, University of Hull

As the Humber continues on its journey to Net Zero, we take a look at how far we have come, how we got here, what there is still to do and how we can achieve it. The Government has introduced ambitious targets to reach Net Zero by 2050 and the Humber plays a vital role in order to achieve this. The Humber Industrial Cluster omits more CO2 than any other in the country and is therefore essential to reaching this target. Luckily, we are a region full of innovative thinkers and rich in research talent which can be drawn on to ensure we are doing the right thing and moving in the right direction. We will be discussing how we can ensure a sustainable future through innovation. You will get the opportunity to engage in insightful conversations with SMEs who have been working with researchers at the University of Hull and initiatives such as Oh Yes! Net Zero to deliver their net zero goals and develop innovative products to help them maintain a competitive advantage locally and globally. Day 3

Wednesday 15th November

ENERGY TRANSITION DAY We need the global transition to clean power to be at least four times faster than it is at present. The power sector accounts for a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions. As demand for energy grows, the power sector must grow and decarbonise in parallel. Dramatic cost reductions in solar and wind energy mean that renewables are now cheaper than new coal in most parts of the world, and bring benefits via improved air quality, energy access and security, and creating jobs in new industries. 9am - 10:30am: Innovation and Collaboration: Shaping a Sustainable Humber Registration link - https://www.eventbrite. co.uk/e/innovation-and-collaborationshaping-a-sustainable-humber-tickets741403536937?aff=oddtdtcreator Join us for a pivotal event that unites two transformative initiatives for the Humber region: the “Humber 2030 Vision” and the “Humber Freeport”. These initiatives are not just about decarbonising the UK’s most carbon-intensive industrial cluster, but also about harnessing business opportunities and fostering a skilled workforce for a sustainable future. The Humber 2030 Vision is spearheading the UK’s most significant decarbonisation challenge with a £15bn investment in an array of projects, from carbon capture and storage to lowcarbon hydrogen. These projects are crucial for achieving the UK’s net-zero goals by 2050 and offer a wealth of opportunities for businesses in the supply chain. Furthermore, they promise to generate new high-skilled green jobs, which will be supported by innovative training facilities. The Humber Freeport will serve as a hub for global trade and investment, driving clean growth and contributing to the levelling up agenda. It will leverage the region’s strengths in renewable energy, clean growth and advanced manufacturing, particularly focusing on offshore wind to attract manufacturers and developers. The Freeport will also foster innovation and boost research and development, and economic growth. Don’t miss the chance to learn more about how these two game-changing opportunities for the Humber will reshape our region and create a sustainable, prosperous future. Host - Richard Gwilliam, UK BECCS Programme Director, Drax

Panelists • Katie Hedges, Head of Membership & Low Carbon Strategy, CATCH • Chris Gilbert, Humber Decarbonisation Project Manager, Phillips 66 • Simon Green, Interim CEO, Humber Freeport • Jo Barnes, Managing Director, Sewell Estates • Harry Jones, Freeports Programme Director, Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities About Humber 2030 Vision: Decarbonising the Humber, the industrial cluster emitting more CO2 than any other in the country, is essential to achieve net zero. It is critical to supporting jobs and economic growth and delivering a sustainable future for generations to come. Businesses are working closely together, pledging £15bn in investment to deliver these projects, while developing cutting-edge training facilities to ensure local people are equipped to take on new high-skilled green jobs. About Humber Freeport: The Freeport will play a crucial role promoting economic activity, attracting investment, and stimulating trade - it will create a hub for global trade and investment, drive clean growth and contribute to realising the levelling up agenda. The Freeport will act as a catalyst to create hotbeds for innovation and research and development,

17

which will then create new markets for UK products and services and drive productivity improvements. This is turn will promote regeneration through the creation of high-skilled jobs in ports linked to the areas around them, ensuring sustainable economic growth and regeneration for communities that need it most. The Humber Freeport will build on existing strengths of the region, including renewable energy, clean growth, and advanced manufacturing. The Humber will use the leverage of the Freeport to accelerate investment in offshore wind, which will attract national and international manufacturers and developers. As well as a strong focus on delivering the net zero agenda, the Humber Freeport will focus keenly on working hand in hand with The University of Hull and The University of Lincoln to deliver a virtual Innovation Hub to propel innovations catalysed by the Freeport and increase R&D investment and economic growth. Bringing these game-changing opportunities to this region will create well-paid jobs for local people, support the extended local supply chain and local economy, and accelerate the Humber’s demonstration of a new green economy, helping to realise government’s Net Zero ambitions by 2050.

Why now is the perfect time to take action to cut your carbon footprint Established in 2022, Oh Yes! Net Zero is a collaborative movement of Hull and Humber-based organisations committed to taking action to achieve their net zero ambitions.

W

e spoke to Melissa Rackham, Oh Yes! Net Zero’s community engagement manager, who explained how the campaign is bringing together organisations across the region to foster collaboration and provide practical support in reducing carbon emissions – and why there has never been a better time for local businesses to plan for a net zero future.

So, how and why was Oh Yes! Net Zero formed? “Oh Yes! Net Zero was established in March 2022 by founding partners Reckitt, Hull City Council, Future Humber and the University of Hull, with the aim of demonstrating how a city region can come together and make a positive impact. “The UK has committed to meeting the ambitions of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, which means achieving net zero by 2050.

“Hull and the Humber is the most carbon-intensive industrial cluster in the UK and is critical to the UK reaching its 2050 goal. “While that’s the driver behind Oh Yes! Net Zero, leading the way on decarbonisation will also help our region flourish through new jobs in a green economy, lower energy bills and cleaner air.”

Who’s involved – and how do they benefit?

their carbon emissions and make their organisations more sustainable generally. “The breadth of our membership means there are countless opportunities for people to learn from each other and share best practice.”

What type of carbonreduction actions are members taking?

“Over 170 organisations have joined Oh Yes! Net Zero, from micro-businesses, SMEs and multinationals to public sector organisations, charities and community groups.

“For some members, joining Oh Yes! Net Zero is the beginning of their decarbonisation journey. They know reducing their carbon emissions is something they need to address but may still not be quite sure where to start – and that’s why they’ve joined.

“As well as events, webinars and content focusing on practical tips and advice, members benefit from hearing what others are doing to cut

“Other members are much further along the path to net zero. A good example is packaging firm Springfield Solutions, which began its carbon

“It’s now not just about saving energy but about the bigger picture and the implications of the UK and the world not achieving net zero. Most importantly, he has brought Springfield employees along on the journey too, and they are now a key part of driving the changes to become more sustainable.

What about collaboration? How are members working together?

Springfield Solutions and C3 Group share carbon reduction advice at a recent members’ event

“Among our membership are sustainability consultancy firms including BACB Renewables and C3 Group, who are helping other organisations get started or make progress towards net zero by sharing their knowledge and expertise.”

What’s your advice for businesses that want to cut their emissions but don’t know where to start? “Firstly, start today by joining Oh Yes! Net Zero. Membership is free and gives you access to practical advice and real support from a network of local organisations that share your desire to take action. “Secondly, don’t be daunted. Every business on the path to net zero started from the same place, and once you’ve taken the first step of understanding your current carbon footprint, even the smallest steps you take to reduce it can make a big difference.”

Ørsted uses giant drones to increase efficiency and safety in industry world first

Offshore wind giant Ørsted has become the first offshore wind company in the world to use autonomous giant drones to transport cargo to turbines.

B

uilding on its previous expertise using smaller drones in other countries, Ørsted is now trialling the 58kg drones, with a wingspan of 2.6 metres to transport cargo of up to 68kg, in the UK. The drone size is the equivalent weight of a large baby giraffe, with the wingspan of an albatross. The use of these drones to deliver cargo to Ørsted’s Hornsea 1 windfarm will reduce costs and time as well as improving operational safety and efficiency. Drones mean less work disturbance as turbines don’t have to be shut down when cargo is delivered. They avoid risk,

making it safer for personnel working on the wind farm and minimise the need for multiple journeys by ship, reducing carbon emissions and climate change impacts. Instead, the drones will be operated from existing crew transfer vessels (CTVs) and Service Operating Vessels (SOVs) which are already on site. Ørsted has used smaller drones for some time with much lighter loads and is now leading the industry in deployment on a larger scale. The company is actively seeking partnerships with the best drone cargo operators and services providers to help grow the supply chain in the UK.

24

Mikkel Haugaard Windolf who is heading the project for Ørsted’s offshore logistics team said: “At Ørsted we want to use our industry leading position to help push forward innovations that reduce costs and maximise efficiency and safety in the offshore wind sector. Drone cargo delivery is an important step in that direction. “We believe the UK can be the first country to commercialise this system in offshore wind farms, acting as global leaders.”

Cabinet approves district heat project to move forward T

Hull City Council’s Cabinet has given the go ahead to the Hull District Heat Network (HDHN), the council’s long-term, cost-saving energy supply project.

he decision means the council will form a Limited Liability Company (LLC) to manage HDHN.

There are a range of benefits for both the city and the council as the project progresses, including supplying reliable and affordable lowcarbon heating. Alongside this, the company will also create local jobs by employing specialist, skilled workers to ensure HDHN operates efficiently, protecting both the council and customers in the long-term by ensuring a reliable and resilient long-term supply of locally sourced low carbon heat and reducing dependence on fossil fuel. The LLC will be regulated by Ofgem to ensure it is fully compliant with the latest guidelines. The Hull District Heat Network is just one of the ambitious projects delivered by the council as it carries out its 2030 Carbon Neutral Strategy and reaffirms the council’s commitment to addressing climate change. The next phase of HDHN will feature stakeholder engagement through the winter which will begin shortly. In February 2024, the project’s Full Business Case will be presented, showcasing how the district heat network will make its way to consumers through underground pipes. It will also detail how each phase will progress and how it will save both the council, and therefore Hull taxpayers, money long-term.

Cllr Jack Haines, the council’s portfolio holder for communities and climate change, said: “This is a project that has fantastic potential and can now be pushed forward. “Unlike the government nationally, Hull City Council is absolutely committed to ensuring it remains a leading authority when it comes to tackling climate change. “We are aware first-hand of the effects in can have on our city and it is important we sustain our long-term future, both environmentally and financially. “At a time when so many people are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, this is another example of how the council will support them.”

Decarbonisation investment welcome, but faster progress is needed says Logistics UK The creation of Freight Week – aimed at highlighting the essential role logistics plays in the UK economy – and the package of decarbonisation measures announced on 19th October by government is positive says business group Logistics UK, however it urges that progress must be actioned faster if deadlines are to be met. Kate Jennings, Director of Policy at Logistics UK, comments: “We welcome government’s recognition of the how important freight is for creating new jobs, growing the economy and achieving net zero. It is encouraging to see government making long-awaited progress on its promises to help decarbonise our sector, including announcing the outcome of the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure competition (ZERFD). However ultimately, we need this progress to be faster, and support actioned promptly if we are to meet impending decarbonisation deadlines.

“We very much welcome the Call for Evidence to inform and support the development of the zero emission HGV and coach infrastructure strategy which is due to be published in 2024. We have continued to strongly advocate to government that this infrastructure strategy receives adequate input from industry to make sure, when it is eventually rolled out, it is in the right places to serve the sector in the most efficient manner possible. “Similarly, Logistics UK has been calling for a review into the Mode Shift Revenue Support (MSRS) scheme which currently disproportionately benefits the rail sector; 2022 research indicated that 95% of the funding from this scheme had been allocated to rail freight. While rail provides strong opportunities for modal shift and must be supported, action must be taken to prevent disadvantaging water freight, which also brings many social and economic benefits. We therefore look forward to inputting into this review.”

Logistics UK is one of the UK’s leading business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With decarbonisation, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. Logistics UK supports, shapes and stands up for safe and efficient logistics, and is the only business group which represents the whole industry, with members from the road, rail, water and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers whose businesses depend on the efficient movement of goods. The Business Imperative of Legal Services in Selling Your Business

The decision to sell a business is a momentous one, fraught with complexities and legal intricacies that can significantly impact the outcome of the transaction.

A

s an entrepreneur, your life’s work is embodied in your business, making the sale process a critical juncture that demands meticulous planning, negotiation, and execution. In this high-stakes endeavour, enlisting the expertise of legal services is not merely advisable; it is a business imperative that can pave the way for a successful and seamless transition. Navigating the Legal Landscape Selling a business involves navigating a labyrinthine legal landscape, replete with contractual obligations, regulatory compliance, tax implications, intellectual property concerns, and potential liabilities. Without a comprehensive understanding of these legal nuances, entrepreneurs risk exposing themselves to unforeseen legal and financial challenges that could cast a shadow over what should be a triumphant culmination of their efforts. Legal professionals with expertise in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) bring invaluable insights to the table. They can help you assess the true value of your business, structure the deal to maximise financial benefits, and identify potential legal pitfalls that could undermine the

transaction. From confidentiality agreements to due diligence, from negotiating purchase agreements to drafting non-compete clauses, legal experts safeguard your interests throughout the sale process. Mitigating Risk and Ensuring Compliance The sale of a business involves a myriad of regulatory obligations, ranging from industryspecific regulations to labour and employment laws. Failing to address these legal obligations could result in costly fines, legal disputes, and reputational damage. Legal services play a pivotal role in ensuring that your business is compliant with all applicable laws and regulations, mitigating the risk of post-sale liabilities that could haunt both you and the new owner. Moreover, legal professionals can conduct thorough due diligence to uncover any hidden legal risks that might not be immediately apparent. This diligence helps you identify and address potential obstacles before they escalate into post-sale legal disputes, fostering a smoother transition and protecting the integrity of the deal. Negotiating for Optimal Outcomes Negotiating the terms of a business sale requires

finesse, acumen, and an unwavering focus on your best interests. Legal experts bring their negotiation prowess to the table, advocating for terms that align with your goals and priorities. They can craft purchase agreements that provide adequate protections, including warranties and indemnities that shield you from future claims arising from pre-sale activities. Furthermore, legal professionals can anticipate potential areas of contention and negotiate fair resolutions that satisfy all parties involved. Whether it’s determining the allocation of assets, addressing intellectual property rights, or handling post-closure matters, legal services are an essential asset in ensuring that negotiations result in outcomes that are favourable and sustainable. From mitigating risks and ensuring compliance to negotiating optimal terms, legal professionals bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. As you embark on the journey of selling your business, harnessing the power of legal expertise is a savvy business decision that safeguards your interests, maximizes value, and paves the way for a brighter future beyond the sale.

The line up this year will ensure that the discussions focus on the Waterline Summit 2023’s key theme – “Action on Climate Change in the Humber”.

The Summit will be held across three days, 13-15 November, at the University’s Aura Innovation Centre – the Humber’s net zero centre, Bridgehead Business Park, Hessle.

Louise Smith, Director of the University’s Aura Innovation Centre, said: “The recent Storm Babet, which caused loss of life, untold damage and closed down the UK’s rail network on shows how the effects of Climate Change are increasingly affecting each one of us – especially here in the Humber where the waterline rising is so evident. We cannot sit back and just catastrophise about it. We do need action, any action is better than no action. The Humber is a very innovative region. It is resilient and has adapted to centuries of change and climate effects. Now, more than ever, we need to bring that innovative thinking and strength through collaboration to the forefront to meet the challenge.

The Waterline Summit will shine a light on the positive action taking place across the region to tackle the biggest challenge the world faces. The University of Hull has a significant role to play within this through its cutting-edge, renewable energy research and low carbon business support initiatives.

“As a University we have a responsibility to not only transmit knowledge but through our teaching and research to work with innovative businesses (large and small), local and regional government as well as the community to deliver real solutions to meet our net zero targets. We can only do this by working together. The Waterline Summit is where we highlight what we are doing and talk about how we are building momentum as a region, which is focused on meeting the challenges and opportunities that Climate Change throws at us. I would urge you to be part of the growing numbers who are acting, not just talking.”

Day 1 of the Summit will bring together international speakers, innovative thinkers, academia and industry experts as well as key government figures to discuss the crucial role the Humber region must play as the UK’s biggest carbon emitter with the greatest decarbonisation potential. The launch event will be opened by keynote speaker, the Rt Hon Chris Skidmore MP, Chair, Net Zero Review and will be followed by a panel discussion. The panel will feature Briony McDonagh, Interim Director of the University’s Energy and Environment Institute. Professor McDonagh will be speaking about the Institute’s cutting-edge research into environmental resilience and energy sustainability in the Humber Region, as well as its global research which has taken place in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, in Africa and in the Amazon River in South America. The second event on launch day will focus on our regional progress made so far, and will focus on the region’s business community which is making great contributions towards the region’s net zero goals. The event will bring together large and small businesses, such as Smith and Nephew, Groupe Atlantic, Bio D and Willerby, to discuss how innovation

and collaboration is key to driving change. The panel will also include the University of Hull’s Dr Sarah Shaw, Reader in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, who will be highlighting how business support is at the heart of the University’s strategy to tackle the climate crisis. Dr Shaw will be providing examples of how the University is working with businesses to provide support and guidance – be it from providing knowledge transfer partnerships to carbon mapping. The second day of the conference will be centred around the theme of “Adaptation and Resilience” through a series of fringe events. One of these events will see the Energy and Environment Institute partnering with global leaders in sustainable development, Arup on an engaging and interactive session to share and explore new approaches to planning climate adaptation and resilience. The afternoon session event is delivered by the University’s Knowledge Exchange Team, showcasing Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and how they can help businesses innovate and grow. The Humber Offshore Wind Cluster will be closing the second day with a drinks reception whilst celebrating the success of the last year in its journey to clean growth. The third, and final, the Energy Transition day will provide an insight into the breadth of opportunities presented by the transition to a net zero economy and the projects and partnerships of all scales being delivered across the region.

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE: University recognised for helping guide region to economic growth The University of Hull has been recognised nationally for its work to promote economic growth and regeneration in this year’s Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF), published by Research England.

T

he results reveal the University has been classed as having ‘Very High Engagement’, the highest ranking in this category.

The KEF3 data also highlights the University as one of the top performing in the country when it comes to research partnerships and in our work with the public and third sector. Professor Dave Petley, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hull, said: “I’m delighted we have been recognised for the work we are doing to promote local growth and regeneration. It is such a crucial part of our commitment to the community in which we are rooted. We will continue to drive future growth alongside our partners and promote economic prosperity for the Humber region. “Knowledge exchange is a crucial part of our work and we are committed to helping to shape our region in a positive way. We approach this civic responsibility with commitment and expertise, and we believe these KEF3 results reflect the achievements of the partnerships we have built, and the way we are sharing advanced knowledge and research with industry, business, and third-sector organisations.” Professor Dave Petley

The University has been supporting local growth and regeneration through innovation support ecosystems for regional SMEs via funded programmes with the Flood Innovation Centre, Aura, and SparkFund. Led by the University of Hull, Aura finds solutions for the challenges facing the region and the world, ranging from technical and operational to economic and societal. So far, Aura has supported more than 1000 businesses to access low carbon innovation support, helping the region’s ambitious drive to net zero. A further five thousand businesses, individuals and researchers have participated in workshops briefings and events at the Innovation Centre, in Hessle. SparkFund, a £20 million innovation and grants programme, has supported SMEs in the Humber, York and North Yorkshire to move their business forward through innovation and Research & Development focusing on low carbon. And a total of £3.5 million has been distributed via the Flood Innovation Centre, which has supported 83 SMEs to develop new flood resilience products and services. In addition, for a decade, the University has been delivering Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), which unite graduates with business partners across the region, giving them a competitive advantage, increased turnover and entry into new markets. Over two thirds of our graduate associates have been offered permanent positions with the company at the end of their KTP.

Professor Dave Petley, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hull

Emma Calverley, Director of the University’s Knowledge Exchange, said: “These results are testament to the work that goes on across the University community to ensure that we contribute to research partnerships, to help grow the region’s economy and to be an integral part of the region by helping to shape its future. “We are delighted to see improvements in our KEF assessment in terms of promoting local growth and regeneration, and to continue to perform with strength in other areas. We will endeavour to build on the success we have achieved. We will do this by uniting with our partners across the region and we look forward to identifying new ways of working within the community that is integral to our success.” Emma Calverley KEF forms the third pillar of assessment of universities’ activities, alongside the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and was developed by Research England to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge exchange in universities. It is the third year universities have been benchmarked against seven key areas, providing a picture of how they engage with external partners to contribute both to the economy and society.

The University of Hull has joined the prestigious Turing University Network.

he Alan Turing Institute unites worldclass research, to apply it to national and global challenges, build skills for the future, and inform debate. It is named in honour of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing is considered to have laid the foundations for modern-day data science and Artificial Intelligence. The Institute’s goals are to undertake world-class research in data science and Artificial Intelligence, apply its research to real-world problems, drive economic impact and societal good, lead the training of a new generation of scientists, and shape the public conversation around data and algorithms. The network launched as a pilot in April with a cohort of 36 university partners. It has now been announced that a further 29 have joined, taking the total number of universities in the network to 65. This gives a wide scope of opportunities for the University of Hull to forge partnerships and share excellence in the fields of data science and AI. The Turing University Network provides all UK universities with an interest in data science and AI the opportunity to engage and collaborate both with the Institute and its broader networks. The University of Hull has joined the prestigious Turing University Network. Professor Dhaval Thakker, who led the University of Hull’s bid to join The Turing University Network, believes being part of the network will promote digital innovation across the University and the Humber region. He explained: “Representing the Hull and Humber region, our inclusion in the network can help broaden the reach of the Turing’s activities in the North of England. We believe that our region has more to gain than most from an increase in digital innovation, given the potential for automation and decarbonisation of our manufacturing industries, as well as the real potential for economic growth in a geographic area which does face challenges. Participating in the Turing Network will provide us with access to a UK-wide community in which to share ideas, foster innovation and drive collective growth. Professor Dhaval Thakker
