JULY - DECEMBER 2023 | THE CAXTON THEATRE

THE CAXTON PLAYERS

Dear Patrons

Welcome to the second half of the Caxton Theatre’s 80th Anniversary year of 2023. The first half saw some cracking productions beginning with Bette and Joan by Anton Burge which was received extremely well.

Terence Frisby’s Funny about Love followed; a laugh a minute comedy again well received and by a much larger audience. A jump in your seat thriller came next as Ira Levin’s Deathtrap hit the stage and the final play of our first half of 2023 was the hugely funny Birthdays Past, Birthdays Present by Alan Ayckbourn. A big well done to all those taking part both on stage and backstage and our heartfelt thanks to all of you who came to see us.

Our second half of the season is equally exciting. She Kills Monsters is a new play by Qui Nguyan, a comedy romp into the world of the fantasy role playing game of Dungeons & Dragons. No previous D&D experience necessary! Next is Home, I’m Darling by Laura Wade, a new period comedy which has had excellent reviews on its recent tour. After the great success of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we bring Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a bloody tale of treachery and greed, to the Caxton Stage. Our season ends with family Christmas favourite The Railway Children, adapted by Mike Kenny from the book by E. Nesbit. A young family have to move from their London home to West Yorkshire when their Father is mysteriously arrested.

I would like to extend my thanks to all the volunteers who help around the theatre: Front of House personnel, Bar staff, Refreshment sellers, Box Office staff and our fund raisers all of whom you, our patrons, see around the theatre. Also big thanks to those who do a great deal of work behind the scenes: our Lighting and Sound Technicians, the set builders, set painters, backstage crew. It really does take a large team of people to put on a single production and we put on eight a year. My thanks also to you for your support and appreciation of all the people who give up their

time for nothing but love of theatre, to look after you and entertain you. If you feel you would like to volunteer and become a member of this wonderful Caxton family, the membership application form is within this brochure or you can contact us at caxton.membership@ outlook.com and join online.

If you’d simply like to know more about our Caxton family without any obligation to join formally, you can come along to our Thursday open and social nights where you can meet current members for an informal chat and get a taste of the next play to be cast, with the Director describing the play and the cast needed for the production. It is always a friendly gathering in the Studio Bar area where you are guaranteed a warm welcome and the Bar is always open. Look out for dates on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

We are constantly striving to make improvements within the theatre. Our newly refurbished Studio Bar and coffee bar are prime examples of this. We are aware of our current problems with keeping our patrons comfortable in the theatre auditorium so one of our priorities in 2023 is improving our heating system within the auditorium area. If sufficient funds can be raised you will have a much more cosy 2024.

This brochure contains our plans for July –December 2023 but may be subject to change. For further information, photographs and updates check website www.caxtontheatre.com our Facebook page The Caxton Theatre Grimsby and Twitter feed @thecaxton1.

We look hope to see you again soon.

SHE KILLS MONSTERS

She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans, a young woman grieving for her deceased sister. The Evans sisters never were especially close, but after Tilly’s death Agnes receives a notebook containing a game scenario created by her sister. She discovers that Tilly was a wellknown Dungeons & Dragons player, and that she was passionate about fantasy gaming. In order to unlock more secrets about her mysterious young sibling, Agnes recruits a “dungeon master” named Chuck to help her understand and grieve Tilly. In This high-octane dramatic comedy, laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres and 90’s pop culture, acclaimed playwright Nguyen offers a heartpounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

It’s Caxtons 80th birthday this year. We’re celebrating with a party at the Oaklands for our members, family and friends. We’re also having a Grand Raffle which will be drawn on 5th July at the theatre.

On 2nd September, we have a fashion show and shopping experience for ladies (no men’s clothes, sadly) from 2pm. Tickets £5.

We’re taking part in Heritage Lincolnshire, opening the theatre on Sunday 10th September from 11-4. We shall be displaying some archive material and our more interesting costumes and props in the bar and in the coffee lounge. Theatre tours will be available, the bar will be open.

OPEN NIGHTS AND AUDITIONS

Anyone is welcome to come along to our regular open nights (8 every year) and to audition to be in any Caxton Main House Play – in fact this is how most of our members arrive!

We hold an open night, usually on a Thursday, before every play about to be cast. The format varies according to the Director. Generally, the taster for the play and the characters will last for about an hour after which there is the opportunity to socialise. You can also decide if you fancy having a go. If the answer is yes, then you should come to the audition night, usually the following Tuesday. Alternatively, come to an open night purely as a social event, to meet new people. The bar will be open and you can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome.

Auditions are held before a panel of three directors, who will select the best mix of people to form the cast. You will not have to act in front of everyone else, nor learn the audition piece by heart.

We choose a variety of plays each season so there are roles to suit all talents, sizes and ages. Experienced actors and complete novices are welcomed every year; our directors are always looking for new talent to nurture and develop.

A Caxton play takes about 12 weeks from first rehearsal to opening night. Rehearsals are usually three nights a week, at the discretion of the director, but minor players rehearse significantly less. Everyone is part of the team and preparing a play is seen as a social event and a chance for fun and friendship.

Details of open nights and auditions can be found on our website www.caxtontheatre.com, Facebook (thecaxtontheatre) and twitter @caxton1
