Chamber Expo 2024 offers ‘Early Bird’ stand deals for Humber businesses

ONE of the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce’s flagship events is back with its successful one-day format taking centre stage in the heart of Humber Business Week 2024 – and this year we are joining forces with the Ministry of Defence and their Military Expo.

This year we are teaming up with the Ministry of Defence, 150 Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corp and the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Yorkshire and The Humber and will have a selection of military vehicles outside Chamber Expo, which will be sure to mobilise lots of attention.

We will also be hosting our second International Trade Conference as part of Chamber Expo 2024 on Tuesday, June 4th, and this year’s venue will be the Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel, Willerby, Hull, HU10 6EB.

Stands are now available for booking through the Chamber’s website or by contacting David Hooper or Kay Hudson who will be happy to help – so don’t miss out on our Early Bird booking offer!

As usual, Chamber Expo 2024 will host all kinds of businesses from both banks of the Humber and the spacious venue can accommodate outside stand space for larger exhibitors, including the region’s motor dealers taking part in the Chamber Expo Motor Show, plus military suppliers. We may also have a few surprise visitors, so put the date in your diary now!

This year’s standholders can look forward to a hot buffet lunch and electricity included in the price of the stand, while parking and entry to Chamber Expo 2024 will be complimentary.

The Chamber’s famous Speed Networking will also return this year, providing a great opportunity to meet some potential new customers from around the region.

Members and non-members alike are welcome to book a stand and everyone is welcome to visit – you don’t have to be a Chamber member to exhibit, or to attend on the day. The Chamber’s ever-popular Expo provides a great opportunity for networking and making introductions to potential

suppliers of everything from cakes to cranes.

So don’t miss out, book your stand now and take advantage of our Early Bird stand deal –£399 per stand if you book before 30th April, after which date the cost will be £450 per stand.

Few economic bright spots as many challenges persist for Humber firms

WITH a continuing lack of clarity on possible interest rate cuts, businesses are still hoping for positive news, but since this report was compiled, both house prices and energy prices have dropped, raising hopes that we will soon see a cut.

Our latest survey, conducted between 12th February and 12th March, revealed that Home Sales dropped further this quarter, dropping another 10 points to -36, while Home Orders fared slightly better, dropping five points to -42.

Exports continued their steady recovery this quarter with the balance figure for Export Sales increasing by 12 points, but remaining in negative territory at -38.

Export Orders did slightly better still, increasing by 15 points to -31.

However, Employment took a tumble, with the number of firms saying they had tried to recruit staff in the last three months dropping by 18 points to -22.

Expected Employment for the next three months increased slightly, up by two points to 9.

More firms reported that they had tried to recruit staff in the last three months, up by 10 points from 49 to 59%. Most of those who had tried to recruit were hoping to fill full-time positions, with more of those positions being

for permanent roles this quarter.

There was a slight decrease in the number of firms looking to recruit part-time staff, down two points to 27.

The number of temporary jobs also increased by 1 point, up to 91.

Fewer firms reported difficulties in recruiting the right kind of staff, down by 5 points to 77. The kind of roles firms were trying to fill varies, but the biggest jump this quarter was Unskilled and Semi-Skilled jobs which were up 13 points at 30.

Management positions also saw a sizeable increase, up 16 points to a balance figure of 60 this quarter.

Cashflow in the last three months was a on the up, but still in negative territory with the balance figure improving to -19.

Raw material and finance costs were both down this quarter, while pay settlements and other overheads all increased marginally.

The biggest external concerns were

Competition and Inflation this quarter, although interest rates were still a worry.

Investment in Plant and Machinery was also down considerably, dropping 18 points to -22. Investment in training was also down, dropping another 7 points to a balance of -14.

Profit Expectations for the next 12 months were also down by three points to a balance figure of -14, but in better news, Turnover Expectations saw a healthy increase, clinging by 8 points to a balance figure of 14.

More firms expected to see their prices rise in the coming months, too, with the balance figure rising by two points to +2.

Only 23% of firms said they were working at full capacity this quarter, indicating that the business is still in the doldrums, to some degree.

Future Parliament Programme helps students make the transition from apathy to advocacy

Rwanda, school uniforms and trans issues were addressed by potential politicians of the future as they were given a glimpse into the day-to-day workload of a local MP.

Ten students who took part in the Future Parliament Programme also spoke on what they see as priority social issues including poverty, pensions and benefits.

Some of the students joined the project in support of their ambition to become an MP. Others found the experience useful as they explored other career opportunities in politics as a researcher, case worker – and even the House of Commons speaker.

Hull West and Hessle MP Emma Hardy, who devised the project, said: “Everyone who was involved in organising and delivering Future Parliament was blown away by the progress which the young people made over just three days.

“They turned up on day one as ten individuals. Some had an early passion for politics and others just a curiosity. Some were looking for inspiration – with one admitting she didn’t think she would ever vote because she had never known her parents use their votes.

“But by the end of day three all ten had prepared speeches about live political issues. Eight read them out as we created our own chamber of the House of Commons. The other two took on the role of Parliamentary researchers and heard their speeches read out by others playing the part of MPs.

“By working as a team, conducting thorough research and studying videos of speaking techniques they organised their thoughts, assembled compelling arguments and developed the confidence which inspired them to make the move from apathy to advocacy.”

Ms Hardy worked with Hull College and the University of Hull to recruit people aged 16 to 19 from across her constituency for the series of briefings and workshops which included recreating Parliamentary debates,

holding discussions with local authority leaders and being grilled by experienced journalists.

The main aim of the initiative was to raise awareness of politics among young people and build interest in a city which has delivered some of the lowest turnouts in the UK at general and local elections.

The “Turnout at elections” report in the House of Commons Library, published in 2023, document examines the 2019 general election and finds that across all 650 constituencies Hull North was 647th with a turnout of 52.2 per cent, Hull West and Hessle was 648th with 52.1 per cent and Hull East was last with 49.3 per cent.

Mihaela Constantin, a student at Hull College, said: “My ambition is to become a prosecution lawyer and I think this will help me because it is great experience and it will help to open some doors. I have become more interested in politics because of this and I wish we’d been able to do it for longer.”

Thayaparan Tharanikan, also from Hull College, added: “I want to study medicine and become a cardiologist and the experience of conducting research and giving my own speech in front of an audience has really helped me with my confidence.”

Cianan Sheekey, who is studying Politics, English Language and Geography at St Mary’s College in Hull, said: “I want to do a degree in politics and become an MP or pursue some other political role and this will help me make more links in the political sphere.

“When we started everyone in the group was

really nervous, not knowing what to expect but they all enjoyed it and developed their ability.”

Professor Stephen Hardy, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Law and Politics at the University of Hull said: “The whole purpose of the project was for young people to understand how they are governed so they can engage more effectively with those who make the decisions that affect their lives.

“What this has shown is that young people do want to take part but sometimes they feel excluded. Once this small cohort found out how to engage, they flourished and grew not just because of the knowledge they gained but also the greater understanding and the skills they developed during their journey.”

Lynette Leith, Vice Principal of Hull College, told the students: “One thing that has really struck me is how powerful your voices are. You have embraced that learning and developed that thinking and those skills and you have really done yourselves proud.

“You have really contributed to this city and our country, how we think and how things look and feel in our lives. You have engaged in something that’s quite remarkable and done a brilliant job and I am genuinely proud.”

Speaking to the future

OWC2024 to share unique insight with the region’s offshore wind sector

The future of offshore wind in the Humber is the focus of the region’s leading 2024 renewables event.

Offshore Wind Connections organised by the influential business group Humber Marine & Renewables, is being held on May 1 and 2 in partnership with the Humber Renewables Awards. It will see a host of industry experts take to the stage to discuss the trajectory of the sector and how the Humber can maintain and develop its national and international presence.

With headline sponsorship from RWE and a list of many other high-profile supporters, OWC2024 is entering its 11th year and has gained momentum alongside the exponential growth of the thriving industry.

It is being held at Hull’s DoubleTree by Hilton where hundreds of delegates will converge to take advantage of its niche trade exhibition, networking and speaker sessions.

OWC2024 will be officially opened on the evening of May 1 by Humber Marine & Renewables Chairman Iain Butterworth, followed by the popular RenewableUK Connect networking event which will carry on late into the evening. Street food and a drink is being provided as part of the ticket.

Taking to the platform on the second and main day of the conference, is a combination of keynote speakers and panels of experts who will engage in insightful discussion, chaired by former Business Live journalist Dave Laister.

The panel sessions will bring together government, academia and industry (including OEMs and SMEs), to give unique perspectives and provide learning opportunities for audience and panellists alike. More than 30 experts are taking part in the on-stage discussions where hot topics of the day will be explored. >>>

With its overarching future theme, topics will include the contribution of offshore wind to net zero targets, the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, development of the supply chain, innovation and sustainability, regional infrastructure and skills development.

Influential guests will provide spotlights and in-depth information on significant developments with highlights including the conference keynote speaker Corrine Barry, RWE’s UK East Coast Director for Net Zero. Also speaking will be Dan McGrail from RenewableUK, Morten Holm from platinum sponsor Orsted, Bailey Bradley from XceCO (Lynn and Inner Dowsing) and Chris Jenner from Outer Dowsing.

The list of sponsors has continued to grow. In addition to lead sponsor RWE and platinum sponsor Orsted, the conference has attracted gold sponsors Associated British Ports, Andrew Jackson Solicitors, Aquila, Bacon Engineering, Butterworth Marine, MMS Offshore Renewables, North Yorkshire Council and Pentagon Marine. Silver sponsors are Humber Freeport, Xocean and ORE Catapult with RSM sponsoring the networking drinks.

Support for the conference includes many organisations working behind the scenes to make it a success, in particular the Humber Offshore Wind Cluster who are shaping and curating the speaker roster and panel sessions. Other supporters include the Department for Business & Trade, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Council, RenewableUK, RSM and The Supply Chain Network.

Iain Butterworth, chair of Humber Marine & Renewables and owner of maritime consultancy Butterworth Marine, said that he hoped that this year’s OWC would be the best to date.

“We are once again combining it with the Humber Renewables Awards which will provide a real buzz around the event with many of the finalists also involved in the conference.

“There is no other opportunity like this for the industry to come together, network and collaborate to help shape the future of the sector as well as celebrate what has been achieved to date by individuals, companies and the whole region.

“We can learn from each other, drawing on the breadth of experience in the room to help ensure the ongoing wellbeing and development of offshore wind in the Humber, North Yorkshire and beyond.”

Camilla Carlbom

Flinn, a director of Humber Marine & Renewables and of shipping company Pentagon Marine, said

“There is an incredible amount of preparation work from many companies and organisations to make OWC2024 a valuable resource for those who invest their time in attending.

“It’s the industry event of the year for the region, and with more than a decade of shared experience and growth behind us, we have another wonderful opportunity to meet, network and plan for the future with colleagues old and new. It’s collaboration in action!”

Last year’s OWC celebrated the 10th anniversary, marking a decade of offshore wind gains in the region.

RWE has been pioneering offshore wind in the UK for more than two decades. Since then, both our technical expertise and offshore portfolio have grown substantially.

RWE recognises suppliers as being the backbone of our success. Throughout our journey, we have sought to maximise UK supplier opportunities, working in partnership with our skilled and diverse supplier network. Together, we have been at the forefront of innovation and driven both regional and industry-wide successes in terms of local regeneration, job creation, Gross Value Add (GVA), infrastructure opportunities and enhanced supplier capabilities.

At a regional level, we recognise the importance of creating opportunities to deliver new supplier networks and regional growth by fostering local businesses, skills and innovation activities.

Over time, our approach to supplier engagement has become more holistic as we strive to maximise the opportunities from our projects progressing through development. To that end, we have created the Supplier Transparency and Engagement Programme (STEP), a more proactive approach to supplier engagement.

Shortlist revealed for 2024 Humber Renewables Awards

Finalists in the Humber Renewables Awards 2024 have been revealed.

Judges have assessed nominations, forming the shortlist of businesses, organisations and individuals vying for the honours. They will be presented at the gala dinner event, once again the finale to the Offshore Wind Connections conference and exhibition, in Hull, on May 2.

Humber Renewables Awards, now in their 12th year, celebrate achievements in a sector that has transformed the region’s economy, eigniting a maritime passion for many while underlining the long-standing critical energy role the region holds, and the transition required. On the judging panel this year was Iain Butterworth, chair of Humber Marine & Renewables; Camilla Carlbom Flinn, director of Pentagon Marine; Sheena McGuinness, head of renewables and cleantech at financial consultancy giant RSM UK and David Laister, PR and media director at marketing consultancy Fred.

Mr Butterworth (pictured above), in his first year at the helm of HMR, organiser of Offshore Wind Connections, said: “It was a pleasure to be involved having thoroughly enjoyed the event as an onlooker in previous years. It was incredibly difficult to reach decisions in some categories, there were big debates with strong opinions put forward over who should get the awards.”

Mrs Carlbom Flinn (pictured above), a fellow HMR director, who recently oversaw the acquisition of her fourth generation Carlbom Shipping business by the London-based entity she is now part of, has been part of the panel for several years. She said:

Thousands of homes and businesses in rural South Yorkshire will get access to gigabit-capable broadband after Quickline Communications was awarded a second contract under the government’s £5 billion Project Gigabit programme.

Quickline awarded second government contract to connect thousands of homes in hard-to-reach communities

Project Gigabit is the UK government’s programme to connect hard-to-reach areas which, without government intervention, would miss out on fast and reliable, gigabit capable broadband.

The latest win means Quickline is now one of only a handful of providers across England with multiple Project Gigabit contracts, covering a combined total of more than 60,000 premises and worth over £104 million in public funding.

The new deal will fund the rollout of a full fibre network to up to 32,100 premises across rural South Yorkshire, along with homes and businesses in East Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

It comes just weeks after East Yorkshirebased Quickline was awarded a £60 million Project Gigabit contract covering 29,000 rural premises in West Yorkshire and parts of North and East Yorkshire.

The new contract will see the connection of outlying communities situated around Barnsley, Doncaster, Epworth, Goole, Maltby, Penistone, Rotherham, Sheffield and Worksop.

Quickline will connect a further 29,000 homes and businesses as part of its commercial network build.

Quickline’s full fibre network will be built using advanced XGS-PON technology, which can support speeds of up to 10 Gbps and plays a crucial role in shaping the future of digital connectivity.

The latest contract was awarded to Quickline following a competitive public procurement process and is worth £44 million in government subsidy.

It makes Quickline, which is backed by Northleaf Capital Partners, one of the UK’s largest rural broadband providers.

Including its associated commercial fibre build and its current coverage, Quickline’s full fibre footprint will ensure over 200,000 deep rural premises are taken out of broadband poverty. This is in addition to another 200,000 rural premises able to connect to Quickline’s next generation fixed wireless network.

As well as building a broadband network, Quickline will also play a key role in ensuring economic growth across the region with the delivery of a wide-ranging social values programme seeing the creation of jobs, apprenticeships, training courses, work placements, workshops, mentoring and more.

Quickline CEO Sean Royce said: “We are incredibly proud to have been awarded a second Project Gigabit contract and one that is again in a very important area for us.

“Our roots are in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and as a broadband provider we have a very strong regional focus. We employ people from Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, we deliver broadband to the people of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and we want to play our part in the growth and economic development of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

“Winning the contract for South Yorkshire, on the back of the one for West Yorkshire, reinforces the important role

Quickline is playing in connecting

hard-to-reach communities across the region, and how we are supporting the government in achieving its ambitions.”

Digital Infrastructure Minister Julia Lopez said: “Thanks to Project Gigabit, thousands of rural homes and businesses across South Yorkshire will soon be able to access the fastest broadband speeds on the market.

“Today marks an important milestone in our drive to tackle poor connectivity in Yorkshire. From Barnsley to Doncaster, patchy connectivity will soon be a thing of the past and lightning-fast broadband will open up new opportunities, driving employment and economic growth.”

Following the signing of the contract, Quickline has rapidly started work in the region. Teams are now active in the village of Woodsetts, in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, and in the Westwoodside area of North Lincolnshire, with the first customers set to be connected by the end of the summer.

Boost for drivers as millions delivered for EV chargepoints across the country Boost drivers for country

Dedicated chargepoint funding will support people in making the switch from petrol and diesel cars to electric vehicles.

● 44 more councils across England to benefit from funding to boost chargepoint rollout

● funding forms part of £381 million dedicated fund to roll out chargepoints throughout the country

● EV chargepoint grant expanded to those without a driveway as part of government’s Plan for Drivers

● comes as over 56,000 public chargepoints have now been installed across the UK – up 47% from this time last year

Charging electric vehicles is set to get even easier thanks to hundreds of millions of funding made available for local authorities, homeowners and renters today (18 March 2024).

The government continues to deliver its £381 million Local Electric Vehicle (LEVI) fund to councils, which can choose where is best to install chargepoints in their local area. Following the approval of the first five local authority applications in February, payments to 44 additional councils from Torbay to Tees Valley, worth over £185 million, have now been approved to help residents charge their vehicles.

The funding will support the delivery of thousands of chargepoints across England, helping more drivers get from A to B easily and supporting families in making the switch. Additionally, the local authorities that have already been allocated to the second round of LEVI funding will be able to apply to the fund from 2 April 2024, following those who have received funding in the first round and in a further boost to the chargepoint rollout.

Technology and Decarbonisation

Minister, Anthony Browne, said: “This government has a plan to help speed up the installation of EV chargepoints, which we’re getting on and delivering.

This dedicated funding to local councils is part of our plan to ensure people can switch from a petrol or diesel car to an EV when they choose to do so.”

Minister for Affordability and Skills

Amanda Solloway said: “This funding will make it easier for people to switch to electric vehicles.

By bolstering our public charging network, we are not only making electric vehicles more accessible, but also driving the transition towards a cleaner, greener future.“

To further support electric vehicle (EV) drivers and families looking to switch to electric, the government is ensuring households without driveways or dedicated parking spaces can access the electric vehicle chargepoint grant. Delivering on our Plan for Drivers commitment

to make EVs a more practical option, the £350 grant will be widened to those who own or rent and have access to adequate street parking.

The funding will drive down the cost of EV ownership by providing up to 75% off the cost of purchasing and installing a chargepoint, and applicants must also have permission from their council to install a cross-pavement charging solution. Applications can be made online.

To help councils deliver EV infrastructure, the government-funded electric vehicle infrastructure training course will launch in full this week following a successful trial. The course is open to all local authorities and will cover key topics from technology to procurement. LEVI funding has already helped to place almost 150 dedicated EV officers in councils to support chargepoint planning and delivery.

Ensuring collaboration between government and industry, today also marks the launch of the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Forum.

20
EV CHARGING COMMERCE-INDUSTRY.CO.UK

The forum, chaired by ministers and AA President, Edmund King, will discuss how best to tackle barriers and accelerate the delivery of charging infrastructure. Wider membership will be set out in due course.

Edmund King OBE, AA president, said: “AA surveys show that one of the main reasons why many drivers are hesitant towards switching to EVs is the perception that there are not enough charging points. To give confidence to drivers now and for the future, we need to overcome these barriers, which will help unlock cleaner, greener motoring for all. Extending grants to those without off-street parking is a step in the right direction.

I’m proud to be co-chairing the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Forum as I’m committed to helping consumers transition to zero emission vehicles and an efficient, affordable, accessible charging infrastructure is key to that. I’m also confident that the UK’s brilliant charging and automotive industry can deliver and play a key part in the UK’s net zero ambitions.”

More and more drivers are making the switch to electric vehicles, with fully electric vehicles accounting for over 16% of the new UK car market in 2023, according to industry statistics. Government and industry are working to install chargepoints at speed, with 56,983 public chargepoints now installed across the UK – a 47% increase compared to this time last year.

Today’s announcement comes following the introduction of the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate into law earlier this year, which is the most ambitious regulatory framework for the switch to electric vehicles of any country in the world. The ZEV mandate requires 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain to be zero emission by 2030, and 100% by 2035, providing certainty to both consumers and industry while helping to safeguard skilled UK jobs in the car industry.

This government has a plan to help speed up the installation of EV chargepoints, which we’re getting on and delivering. This dedicated funding to local councils is part of our plan to ensure people can switch from a petrol or diesel car to an EV when they choose to do so.

£5.8 million award to energise UK’s offshore wind ambitions led by the University of Hull

The Centre will play a key role in both developing the skills needed to drive this exciting technology and in providing underpinning research across a wide variety of activities in this field.

Professor Dave Petley, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hull

It is part of the UK’s biggest-ever investment in engineering and physical sciences doctoral skills, totalling more than £1 billion in government, university and industry spend, announced by Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan. This will fund 65 Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) CDTs to support leading research in areas of national importance including net zero, AI, defence and security, healthcare and quantum technologies.

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Offshore Wind Energy Sustainability and Resilience led by the University of Hull’s Energy and Environment Institute, will unite over 40 industry partners, Durham University, Loughborough University, and the University of Sheffield.

University of Hull Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dave Petley, said:

“I’m absolutely delighted that our new Centre for Doctoral Training has been funded. Offshore wind is a key part of the UK, and indeed the global, energy mix as we move to Net Zero. The Centre will play a key role in both developing the skills needed to drive this exciting technology and in providing underpinning research across a wide variety of activities in

this field. It will continue to provide a brilliant network of key industrial partners and universities, allowing the UK to enhance its position as a world leader in offshore wind energy.”

The new Centre will combine the research power of each partner institution, drawing on academic strengths in engineering, environmental science, AI, socioeconomics and human factors. CDT Director, Professor Robert Dorrell, said:

“We are delighted in the award of this EPSRC CDT focused on offshore wind energy, which is now being developed at unprecedented scale in UK and global waters. Our CDT connects students from a diverse range of backgrounds, from engineering, environmental science and socio-economics, to deliver resilience in research addressing critical sector challenges. With the programme supported by continuous engagement with our key industry, policy and civic partners we will help develop the future leaders offshore wind urgently requires for the UK to meet net-zero 2050 targets.”

The Hull-led Centre is enhanced by an additional investment of over £12m from national and international offshore industry and university partners; investing in regional talent and skills and research excellence.

Over 40 offshore wind industry bodies have pledged their support for the new Centre, including match funding for up to 30 doctoral studentships that will be co-funded by industry sponsors. Jane Cooper, Director of Offshore Wind for RenewableUK, will Chair the CDT’s Strategic Advisory Board. Jane Cooper said:

“I’m thrilled to accept this invitation to chair the Aura Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT) in Offshore Wind Sustainability and Resilience, and I’m grateful to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for the funding they are providing towards this. The CDT will deepen understanding on a wide range of key issues to support the development of the offshore wind sector, including the environmental impact of offshore wind, the economics and development of new supply chains, the growing use of automation and how to integrate offshore grid into the network. I’m confident that the students who will be researching these areas will,

UNIVERSITY OF HULL NEWS COMMERCE-INDUSTRY.CO.UK 28
University of Hull students, like Maisy Bradbury and Nilotpal Dhar at Aura CDT, are undertaking key research for the offshore wind sector

in time, provide the expertise and knowledge to develop the innovative solutions and future leadership which are needed to deliver UK’s ambitious offshore wind targets”.

Professor Charlotte Deane, Executive Chair of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, part of UKRI (Research and Innovation), said:

“The Centres for Doctoral Training announced today will help to prepare the next generation of researchers, specialists and industry experts across a wide range of sectors and industries.

“The high calibre of both the new centres and applicants is a testament to the abundance of research excellence across the UK, and EPSRC’s role as part of UK Research and Innovation is to invest in this excellence to advance knowledge and deliver a sustainable, resilient and prosperous nation.”

The new CDT follows on from the hugely successful EPSRC-NERC CDT in Offshore Wind Energy and the Environment, awarded to University of Hull and partners in 2019. This previous EPSRC-NERC CDT award has already recruited, and is now training, over 60 doctoral researchers who are innovating solutions to engineering and environmental issues. These include exploring whether VR could be key to mitigating debilitating sea-sickness, working with Siemens to improve wind turbine manufacturing, and finding ways to protect wind turbine power cables in order to safeguard the energy supply delivered to the national grid.

What’s the deal on devolution?

Earlier this year, the University of Hull announced its commitment to supporting devolution.

The University of Hull is committed to supporting devolution for Hull and East Yorkshire and the significant opportunities it affords for growth and economic prosperity for the region.

Devolution will offer immediate political and financial support for a range of critical infrastructure projects. In addition, the £400m long-term investment will enable local leaders to address regional challenges, including housing, jobs, skills and transport and provide a catalyst for innovation and growth. A Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) will improve collaborative decision-making on issues affecting the whole of Hull and East Yorkshire, and an elected mayor will be a high-profile ambassador for inward investment and provide a strong voice with policymakers in Whitehall.

Universities have always played a crucial role in sparking growth and developing opportunities through their research, innovation and knowledge exchange. As the only higher education institution in Hull and East Yorkshire, we are proud of our role in the educational, social, economic and cultural development of our unique city and region.

As an anchor institution, the University is a vital driver of wealth creation via investment in local supply chains, talent pipelines (around 5,000 graduates each year), and support for the visitor economy.

Devolution unlocks the opportunity for our region to secure one of the Government’s Investment Zones, which will drive growth, increase jobs and encourage investment, underpinned by world-leading university research and innovation. These investment zones in other regions are expected to deliver huge benefits, for example the Advanced Manufacturing Investment Zone in South Yorkshire will leverage more

than £1.2bn of private funding, supporting more than 8,000 jobs by 2030. We expect similar benefits could be leveraged here.

A leading foreign trading port and gateway to Europe, our region is home to world-class companies, whose private investment is crucial to future success. The devolution deal will be a catalyst for inward investment and will support the Humber industrial cluster to thrive, working with the Freeport, Future Humber and the planned Greater Lincolnshire Mayoral Combined County Authority.

We have a strong track record of collaboration in the region, and the University is actively engaged in the proposed devolution deal. We will work with a future Mayor, industry partners and the community to address major social, economic and environmental issues, including cancer care, wound healing, clean energy, carbon capture and flood resilience.

As Hull and East Yorkshire’s university we generate £1.2 billion of Gross Value Added (GVA) annually supporting over 14,000 jobs and enriching the cultural life of our communities. Working alongside the MCA and local authorities we will offer compelling reasons to live, work and grow businesses in Hull and East Yorkshire.

The University of Hull is proud to have served Hull and East Yorkshire for approaching 100 years and as the region comes together to create an ambitious future vision for growth, we look forward to working as a trusted partner in this shared endeavour.

University of Hull works with Humber company to develop new online tool to help deliveries go green

The University of Hull’s Aura Innovation Centre has joined forces with Hull-based company iParcelBox to develop an online carbon footprint tool to help people make green choices when shopping online.

Over the last few years, online shopping has boomed. As e-commerce evolves and becomes more mainstream, it brings with it a number of challenges. Is it better for the environment to get our parcels delivered to our door, or to a pick-up point? Sometimes it’s hard to know which is the most sustainable option.

iParcelBox has worked with leading academics at the University of Hull

to undertake carbon mapping of e-commerce deliveries, creating a calculator which gives both retailers and customers a fair and unbiased comparison of the carbon footprint of different online purchasing options, enabling buyers to make informed decisions as to which delivery method is the greenest.

The journey started when iParcelBox, an innovative parcel delivery solution based in the Humber region, wanted

to understand exactly how green their product was. They provide a smart, secure and weatherproof drop-box, which the customer monitors and controls from their smartphone to securely receive parcels when they’re not home or can’t get to the door. This means parcels can be securely delivered first time, saving time for both delivery companies and customers, and also cutting down on the greenhouse gas emissions often associated with missed deliveries.

UNIVERSITY OF HULL NEWS COMMERCE-INDUSTRY.CO.UK 30

In order to reduce their own corporate emissions, many courier companies are encouraging customers to get their parcels delivered to local hubs, such as pick-up points or lockers, enabling them to claim lower emissions for the last leg of the delivery process. However, depending on the locations of the parcel pick-up hubs, such claims of environmental benefits from delivery companies ignore the fact that the customer will still have to collect their parcel from the local hub. This could involve a further journey if not within a short distance – a particular issue for out-of-town online-shoppers for whom walking, cycling or public transport may not be an option.

Paul Needler, iParcelBox’s CEO, knew that the Aura Innovation Centre (AIC) could help support small businesses to accelerate their low carbon innovations into commercialisation, so got in touch to see whether their idea was eligible for support and funding.

The AIC matched iParcelBox up with the University of Hull Business School’s logistics and supply chain expert Dr Sushma Kumari, who leads a masters course in the subject.

Brian Houston, InventX Manager at the AIC, said: “The University of Hull has worldclass expertise in logistics, so when Paul got in touch we knew there’d be academics who’d love to get their hands on such an innovative and fascinating project. We were able to

secure funding for the project, which paid for the researchers’ time, and the result has been this fantastic online tool. Given the continued growth of online shopping, the potential for benefits to lowering emissions on deliveries could be a big contribution to meeting net zero targets.”

Paul Needler, CEO at iParcelBox, said: “It’s great that consumers will finally have access to a simple tool they can use to make informed decisions about how to minimise the emissions associated with parcel deliveries, backed up with EU-funded academic research.

“For a large proportion of the population where collection involves either a dedicated vehicle journey or an extra leg to an existing trip, they may be surprised to find that at-home delivery to a secure location such as iParcelBox could be the greenest option.”

The e-commerce industry has previously suffered from a lack of reliable information for eco-conscious customers to use when considering how they get parcels delivered. This tool will deliver accurate, unbiased data to give consumers information on which of the available delivery options will be best for the planet. This should help customers make an informed decision when it comes to home delivery, and could even start to cause behavioural change – something which can only be good for sustainability.

The myparcel carbon calculator tool is now available for industry and customers to access at https://co2.myparcel.org.uk

Navigating the Global Waters: Freight Forwarding and Shipping Services

In an era where globalisation has shrunk distances and the demand for rapid, efficient transportation of goods has never been higher, the logistics industry has risen as the backbone of global trade. This complex network relies on a multitude of services to ensure the seamless movement of goods across borders.

Among these, freight forwarding, ship agencies, breakbulk services, machinery and vehicle shipping services, and regular sailings stand out as pivotal elements. Each plays a unique role in the logistics chain, offering solutions tailored to the diverse needs of international commerce.

Freight Forwarding: The Architects of Global Trade

Freight forwarders are the architects of the shipping world, designing and executing logistics plans that move goods from point A to B. They act as intermediaries between shippers and transportation services, leveraging their expertise and networks to negotiate the best prices and ensure efficient transit of goods. Their services include booking cargo space, negotiating freight charges, consolidating freight, and handling cargo insurance, customs documentation, and export documentation. By taking the

complexity out of logistics, freight forwarders enable businesses to focus on their core operations, safe in the knowledge that their goods are in expert hands.

Ship Agencies: Navigating Local Waters

Ship agencies represent the interests of ship owners and charterers, acting as their local point of contact in ports around the world. They co-ordinate all activities related to the vessel’s port call, from ensuring compliance with local regulations to arranging for pilotage, berth assignments, and the loading and unloading of cargo. Their deep understanding of local customs and practices ensures that vessels transit through ports efficiently and without delay, minimising turnaround time and costs.

Breakbulk Services: Handling the Heavyweights of Global Trade

Breakbulk services cater to cargo that cannot be transported in standard-sized shipping

containers due to its large dimensions or weight. This includes goods like construction equipment, large machinery, and oversized vehicles. Breakbulk cargo is loaded and unloaded individually, often using special equipment and handling techniques. The expertise involved in breakbulk shipping ensures that even the most challenging cargo reaches its destination safely and intact, opening up global markets for industries that deal in oversized or heavy-lift goods.

Machinery and Vehicle Shipping Services: Moving the Movers

Specialised logistics providers offer tailored services for the transportation of machinery and vehicles. This includes everything from construction and agricultural equipment to cars, trucks, and even boats. These providers understand the unique challenges associated with transporting valuable and often bulky items, offering solutions that ensure their safe, timely, and cost-effective delivery.

“Too

little,

too

late” to help logistics businesses, says industry body

Logistics UK has reacted with disappointment to today’s (3 April 2024) announcement on the intended charging structure for imported products of animal origin from the EU, such as fresh food, which is to be imposed as part of the government’s post-Brexit Border Target Operating Model.

“Logistics businesses have been pressing government for detail on the level of charges and how and when they will be implemented on imported goods since the Brexit vote,”

says Nichola Mallon, Head of Trade at business group Logistics UK, which represents the whole sector.

“With only 27 days to go until these new checks and charges are to be applied, the cumulative cost facing businesses, and details of the compliance regime that will underpin it, are still not clear.

“The charges to be imposed on imported goods - £29 for loads of medium and high-risk products of animal origin, such as foodstuffs, and £10 for low-risk products - at government-run Border Control Posts will have a significant impact on the cost of doing business with

the EU. While a cap on the maximum charge for any one consignment recognises the administrative complexity facing groupage operators, these charges will hit them and SMEs hardest.

“These charges, as well as all the other inspection fees to be charged by the Animal and Plant Health Agency, Port Health Authorities and Local Authorities, and the charges that will be set at commercially-run Border Control Posts, will need to be paid somewhere in the supply chain,” she continues. “Logistics businesses already run on extremely narrow margins and cannot simply absorb these additional costs, so it seems likely that they will have to be passed on to customers in the form of higher prices.”

According to Ms Mallon, logistics businesses have been making their feelings known to government about the proposed border charges for some time, but their opinions have been overlooked:

“81% of businesses that responded to the government’s own

consultation on its proposed charging structure at the border made it clear that these charges will have a fairly or extremely negative impact on their business. Today’s announcement makes it very clear that the government isn’t listening to those who make sure our shelves are stocked and at the lowest possible prices. As a sector we reiterate our call on the government to publish the modelling behind its assertion that the impact on food inflation will be 0.2% over three years: we believe the reality will be very different.”

Thriving Melton West business park to Evolve with new speculative development

Wykeland Group has announced a new development with outstanding sustainability credentials at the fast-growing Melton West business park in East Yorkshire.

Evolve @ Melton West will comprise two larger units of 37,000 sq ft and 22,000 sq ft and a terrace of five smaller units of 5,000 sq ft each, all available to let from early 2025.

The development will form part of the wider Melton West site, off the A63 west of Hull, and will create a total of 84,000 sq ft of business space, to enable companies to grow and expand their operations.

The £10m development is being delivered speculatively by leading Yorkshire commercial property developer Wykeland as the latest major investment at Wykeland’s thriving Melton West site.

Construction is expected to begin in May, with the new units due to be ready for occupation late in the first quarter of 2025.

The buildings will be EPC A-rated, with rooftop solar panels, green living walls and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Cycle storage shelters will form part of the development, which will also feature planted

green roofs, with fast electric vehicle charging also available for public use.

The buildings allow high levels of natural light in, thanks to translucent roof panels, creating bright and attractive workplaces and reducing the length of time when artificial lighting is required.

The project will create almost 100 jobs during the construction phase, with employment for around 150 full-time equivalent positions once the facilities are occupied.

Melton West is strategically located off the A63, providing easy access to the M62 corridor, M1 and A1. The business park’s occupiers include blue chip businesses such as Amazon, Heron Foods, shower maker Kohler Mira and generator manufacturer Allam Marine.

Almost 2.5m sq ft is already under construction at Melton West, including global medical technology business Smith+Nephew relocating from its existing site in Hull to a new £100m research and development and manufacturing facility, and a new Amazon distribution facility.

Companies House substantial fee increases for company incorporation and maintenance.

Companies House has announced significant increases in the fees associated with incorporating and maintaining a company, which came into effect on 1 May 2024. These changes mark a significant shift in the cost structure for businesses across the UK, reflecting Companies House’s move towards a cost recovery based fee system.

Currently, incorporation fees range from £10 to £40, depending on the method of registration. However, from 1 May, businesses across the UK will face heightened costs at every step, from registration to dissolution. Notable increases include a 300% rise in online registration fees for businesses and limited liability partnerships, now costing £50, and a sharp increase in the fee for same-day incorporation services from £30 to £78. Additionally, the cost for voluntary striking off has been adjusted from £8 to £33, affecting companies seeking to dissolve.

Overseas entities, looking to register with Companies House, will confront the most substantial hikes, with registration fees soaring to £234 from £100 and removal fees to £706 from £400.

The rise in fees also extends to annual

confirmation statements, mandatory for all companies, including dormant ones, which will see a costs increase from £13 to £34. This fee covers a 12-month period and is only paid with the first filing within this timeframe.

These increases will inevitably impact the cost structure of company formation agents, who typically add a minimal margin to the Companies House charges for their basic services. Consequently, businesses utilising these services will also experience a rise in fees.

Companies House justifies the updated fee structure as a necessary measure to cover the costs of their services comprehensively, adhering to a cost recovery basis without aiming for profit generation.

Businesses planning to incorporate or undergoing changes are advised to be aware

of these increased costs, ensuring compliance with the new fee structure post-1 May 2024.

Forrester Boyd Chartered Accountants advises businesses contemplating incorporation or facing operational changes to be aware of these increased costs. Our team is ready to provide expert advice and support tailored to your specific business needs.

Business Enterprise Fund to support 280 businesses and create 600 jobs with new £20m fund

Flexible finance provider the Business Enterprise Fund (BEF) has received a facility of £20m to boost support for small businesses, via an investment from Lloyds Bank & Big Society Capital).

In a bid to support local jobs and improve the economy, the investment is part of a £62m boost to help Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs) back businesses in the most deprived areas of England and Wales. The investment into CDFIs from a mainstream bank also marks a first in recent years.

BEF, which operates across Yorkshire and the Humber, the North East and the North West, is one of three CDFIs selected to receive the funding, with criteria ensuring that the money goes towards socially motivated lenders who are already lending around £100m per year to businesses which traditional and challenger banks or fintech can’t service.

The fund is designed to support underserved communities such as BAME and female led businesses; CDFIs have become known for working with such businesses and providing support where mainstream banking cannot.

BEF, which marks 20 years of lending in 2024, specialises in providing flexible finance to businesses in these communities, championing the significant positive effects that small business has in the post-industrial areas of the UK.

Stephen Waud, CEO of BEF comments: “It’s good news that mainstream lenders such as Lloyds Bank recognise the transformative effects that CDFIs have in the communities they serve. It’s all about providing business owners, and aspiring business owners booming with entrepreneurship and great ideas, with the opportunity to prove their ideas. There’s also a real focus on trickle up, rather than trickle-down economics, where job creation and wealth generation in these communities create proven change.

“We’re thrilled to be one of the CDFIs helping to utilise this fund and support small businesses and local economies. We plan to support over 280 businesses and create nearly 600 jobs with the funds that we have, helping both female and BAME led businesses with the opportunity to prove their success.”

Funded by Lloyds, Big Society Capital and contributions from participating CDFI, CIEF will provide the CDFI with the capital they need to meet growing demand from small businesses.

The fund, which follows on from a successful first phase of funding, will continue to be managed by Social Investment Scotland (SIS), which has been investing in the social sector since 2001 and is itself a CDFI. Responsible Finance and the Impact Investing Institute have both played a key role in bringing this second phase to fruition² along with the three participating CDFIs.

Elyn Corfield, CEO Business and Commercial Banking, Lloyds Bank, said: “Small and medium size enterprises are the heartbeat of the UK economy and as the largest domestic banking group, we have a proud history of supporting UK businesses to thrive. We’re therefore delighted to support the CDFI sector to back local businesses, with a focus on deprived areas, and ensure they have access to a range of financial options right for them. When local businesses flourish so do local communities and we hope our leadership within this second phase of CIEF will see many more areas of the UK succeed.”

Theodora Hadjimichael, CEO of Responsible Finance which represents the UK’s CDFIs, said: “Wherever they live, entrepreneurs need the right finance at the right time to develop their businesses. Yet many viable businesses based outside London or led by people from an ethnic minority background or by women, struggle to access the finance they need to grow. Lending from the UK’s CDFIs is meeting this gap, creating thousands of thriving businesses and banks’ future customers.

“We are thrilled to welcome Lloyds Bank’s commitment to our sector and the small businesses we serve, alongside BSC’s valued longstanding support. As we announce this historic investment, we urge other mainstream banks to join Lloyds. We call on Government to extend the Recovery Loan Scheme (RLS) which has proven so effective at unlocking finance for SMEs. RLS is a crucial way for securing investment like this and channelling it to underserved but viable businesses.”

Energy efficiency works for public buildings following successful funding application

Hull City Council is set to reaffirm its commitment to becoming carbon neutral as it prepares to launch a £2.5m energy efficiency scheme thanks to a successful funding bid.

unding of more than £1.5m from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme will support the project which will see three public sector buildings undergo energy efficiency and decarbonisation works.

The scheme is run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and is delivered by Salix Finance.

These works will be completed at Western Library on Boulevard, Streetlife Museum on High Street and Treasury Building on Guildhall Road.

The energy efficiency works will include Solar PV and enabling measures to allow connection for district heating to the Streetlife Museum and Treasury Building, with an air source heat pump to be installed at Western Library.

It is estimated that these works will provide carbon savings of 225 tonnes annually, as well as £99,000 of energy savings, whilst also contributing to securing Western Library’s status as a warm space.

The council has committed £1m towards delivery of the project which is expected to be delivered by spring 2026.

Cllr Jack Haines, the council’s portfolio holder for climate change, said:

“The council is delighted to be able to accept this funding from the government to bring forward its energy efficiency scheme.

“This project demonstrates the council’s commitment to tackling climate change and its carbon neutral and net zero targets.

“It will have a long-term benefit for the city, both from a carbon production perspective and energy savings costs.”

These works form part of the council’s Hull 2030 Carbon Neutral Strategy and 2045 net zero targets.

Community and stakeholder engagement will be completed as the project gets underway before approval will be sought for contractor procurement from the council’s Cabinet in May.

Salix director of programmes, Ian Rodger, said:

“We are delighted to be able to work with Hull City Council and to support it as part of its Carbon Neutral strategy.

“This project will deliver a significant reduction in the council’s carbon footprint, provide significant energy savings and make these three building better places to work and visit for local residents.”
