FEG Global Engineers’ Burning Question Ballot Results at PPMA Show 2023 Engineering Project Management firm FEG Global brought an interactive survey to their stand at this year’s PPMA exhibition. The survey asked engineers to answer, “What is the key cost driver for your current projects?” There were 4 available answers to choose from: Energy Cost, Maintenance Cost, Labour Cost or Growth/expansion cost and all respondents were able to take part via a token drop into an on-stand display – giving an instant visual representation of the most popular answers. The results of the survey were…. drum roll please…. 4th Place: Maintenance Costs with 20.52% of votes 3rd Place: Energy Costs with 24.35% of votes 2nd Place: Growth/Expansion Costs with 26.92% of votes

Chris Williams, MD of FEG Global, said, “Our clients all have different reasons for starting their projects – typically one of these 4 areas. It is interesting to see that there were votes cast across the board, showcasing all of the cost drivers play a huge part and are equally important factors.” The FEG team is taking the interactive survey on tour to several exhibitions this year and is hoping that the results will give an industrywide picture of project drivers for 2023.

Road to Digitalization - “mySüdmo” Virtual Configurator Optimizes Process Valve Selection The Corona pandemic has advanced virtual communication, particularly in B-to-B areas, due to its 24/7 availability, standardized processes, clear storage of information, and sustainability. The Pentair product configurator “mySüdmo,” is an excellent example of this modern communication tool, allowing customers to select the right process valve for their needs without installing an app or program. This browser-based application allows for easy access and customization, promoting sustainability and convenience in B-to-B communication. A guided selling approach based on carefully selected application questions The configurator uses a guided selling approach based on specific application questions, developed with sales and construction specialists. The process starts with “I need help with my selection” or “I already know my valve type.” Option 1 will provide options such as – brewery, production, aseptic / switching / tank bottom valves etc., activators & housing, resulting in a proposal that includes all relevant data, documentation and 3D animations, ensuring the customer knows exactly what they are getting. If the basic valve type is known, the selection is made via stored product series or product families. Providing a tailored proposal to the customer as soon as possible The system uses a shopping cart function to send a detailed enquiry to the responsible department, who checks the request’s plausibility and prepares an offer. This process is not automated but involves physical contact, aiming to speed up response and processing times. A virtual product range with over 100,00 valves The configurator maps double seat, single seat, and butterfly valves, aiming to make over 100,000 products available virtually. Documentation, videos, and language range expansion are currently being explored. The configurator is an in-house development, allowing for flexible implementation and market response. The goal is to provide higher efficiency, speed, and security for a better customer experience. mySüdmo can be reached via: mysudmo.pentair.com

Berry’s SuperCup Takes Reusable Role at Rugby World Cup Berry Global’s SuperCup reusable plastic cup has helped spectators at this year’s Rugby World Cup in France enjoy their favourite beverages while enabling organisers to comply with the country’s ban on single-use plastic cups.

Berry has partnered with InfinyCup, a family-owned company specialising in reusable food and beverage tableware for big events, to provide drinking cups for the stadiums in Bordeaux and Lille. InfinyCup’s extensive network and expertise, particularly in the world of sports, led to it being invited to present a solution for the Rugby World Cup. For this event, the company joined with Berry Global and Stratus, a producer of In-Mould Labelling, to offer customised versions of the Berry reusable plastic SuperCup.

All reusable drinking cups within the SuperCup range are dishwasher safe, helping to help ensure effortless cleaning. Even after multiple uses, they maintain their high quality and pleasant feel. The cups are also designed for efficiency, featuring an inner stacking rim that allows them to be stacked neatly.

SuperCup has a beer-like design and is at least 30% lighter than conventional reusable plastic beer cups available on the market. At the same time, the cups are exceptionally sturdy and built to last. Crafted from recyclable polypropylene (PP), the SuperCup not only promotes reuse, but also enables easy recycling after its useful life where the appropriate systems exist.

Amber Beverage Group to invest €35m in new Irish whiskey distillery

Smurfit Kappa’s innovative Design2Market Factory set for European expansion

New distillery will be one of the largest in the Irish whiskey category with the aim of building capacity for producing 4 million LPAs annually, while laying down and building reserves for the future. Walsh Whiskey Distillery at Dunleckney to become the brand home for Writers’ Tears® and The Irishman® super-premium whiskeys.

Smurfit Kappa’s Design2Market Factory will be expanding across Europe after a successful first year in operation. The innovative facility, which enables customers to test and adapt their packaging on a small scale before market launch will be replicated across Germany, Italy, Poland and the UK.

Amber Beverage Group (ABG) has signalled its intention to become one of the major global producers of Irish whiskey by investing up to €35 million in the construction of one of the largest distilleries in the category (subject to planning permission). Walsh Whiskey Distillery at Dunleckney will become the brand home for ABG’s two critically acclaimed super-premium whiskeys -Writers’ Tears® and The Irishman® which are exported to over 50 countries worldwide. ABG’s intention is that the distillery will be capable of reaching a production capacity of 4 million LPAs annually. The distillery’s capacity will facilitate ABG’s plans to lay down significant reserves of maturing whiskey over the long term.

The 3000m2 original innovation hub in the Netherlands has been home to over 50 successful projects for some of the world’s biggest consumer brands. Smurfit Kappa’s multi-disciplinary team takes a packaging challenge and designs a new solution which is ready to be tested in the market in just two weeks. In addition to reducing risk and turnaround time, Design2Market Factory provides customers with a sustainable packaging solution that reduces their carbon footprint and supports their recyclability targets.

Subject to planning approval, the new Walsh Whiskey Distillery at Dunleckney will be located on an historic 18th century site by the banks of the River Barrow in County Carlow, just over an hour from Ireland’s capital city, Dublin. It is hoped that construction of the distillery will commence later in 2024. The construction process will take approximately 18 months with commissioning of the distillery in 2026. Making the announcement, Jekaterina Stuge, CEO Of Amber Beverage Group, said: “This is ABG’s second major investment in the fast-growing Irish whiskey category following our acquisition of Walsh Whiskey and its superpremium Irish whiskey brands, Writers’ Tears and The Irishman, in 2021. In keeping with our growth ambitions as a rapidly growing global spirits company, once commissioned our distillery will enable ABG to become one of the major global producers of Irish whiskey and to leverage the exceptional growth the category is predicted to continue to experience for the foreseeable future.

The user-driven prototypes are designed in collaboration with customers combining creativity, technical expertise and advanced AI models to address specific needs. So far, the team has created, analysed and launched on the market many innovative solutions including shelf-ready packaging for detergent, a paper-based replacement for shrink wrap and a complete range of eCommerce solutions. Design2Market Factory also creates packaging solutions that meet Amazon’s certification standards. Arco Berkenbosch, Smurfit Kappa’s Chief Innovation Officer, said: “We are thrilled to have reached this milestone. The journey of the Design2Market Factory has been remarkable and the trust placed in us by many industryleading household names is testament to our commitment to innovation and excellence at speed. Broadening our European footprint will help more customers to stand out in an increasingly competitive landscape and achieve their sustainability goals in line with our Better Planet Packaging initiative.”

We will preserve the heritage of the historic site at Dunleckney, while introducing high-end production capabilities, married with a modern design to excite the senses of visitors to what will become a leading distillery and brand home for our whiskeys.” Bernard Walsh, Founder and Managing Director of Walsh Whiskey, said: “Located in the heart of Ireland’s barley growing region, with its own supply of natural water, the 18th century riverside location of Dunleckney has been a special location for producing drink and food since the 1700s. Milled corn, beer, and malted grain have all been produced at this site, so whiskey is a natural progression. Our immediate focus will be on producing pot still and single malt whiskeys in traditional copper pots.”

Popcorn Kitchen makes its eagerly anticipated move into top-grade confectionery October sees the eagerly anticipated launch of Popcorn Kitchen’s most ambitious NEW range launch yet; namely the creation of a giant 750g Salted Caramel chocolate bar and 3 x deliriously decadent 100g offerings including a: White Chocolate and Raspberry, Chocolate Orange and a truly immersive Salted Caramel.

Popcorn Kitchen is a bustling, small-batch popcorn provider that has enjoyed meteoric growth over the last 12-18 months largely on account of its single-minded mission to showcase popcorn’s more avant-garde aspirations, initially with its pioneering ‘home-poppin’ kits and NOW with its 4-strong confectionery collection. According to Popcorn Kitchen owner, Louise Webb, ‘The unprecedented success of our home poppin kits highlighted the alluring appeal of Belgian chocolate and best-in-class popcorn working side-by-side as luxurious bedfellows. The indulgent make-up of our popcorn (best ingredients,

involving flavour marriages….) means that its well-suited to make a seamless transition to top drawer confectionery hero.’ In the past popcorn themed chocolate bar unions have been thwarted by a penny-pinching commitment to low-grade chocolate, cloying sweetness and worst of all soggy popcorn with zero crunch. Popcorn Kitchen effortlessly bats all these historical hinderances with 3 sublime sweet treats sensations that will make any aspiring gifting or confectionery fixture burst with pride. Over the Moo’s ‘Dairy Free Wonder From Down Under’ Online Campaign Is Tasked With Supporting The Bite-Sized Business’s Middle East Push Over the Moo’s eagerly anticipated Kibson’s Launch in October will coincide with the launch of 4 ‘frustrated cows’ online ads tasked with conveying the brand’s proud, plant-based focus. Bite-sized ice cream propositions are the unrivalled ‘moo-mentum’ drivers within super-premium ice cream at this moment, offering that perfect balance of ‘me-time’ indulgence meets portion control. However, until now, within bite-sized there has been a disappointing dearth of discerning plant-based propositions, providing Over the Moo with the perfect opening to take its modern-day take on a smaller yet effortlessly elegant choc ice to an appreciative, international audience. According to Over the Moo UK founder, Simon Goodman ‘Whilst our initial focus was the UK’s buoyant indie ice cream scene (food halls, delis, cafes, garden centres) via a select number of expert specialist wholesalers: (DWF, CLF, Go Puff, Plant, Mighty Plants, On the Rocks…..) the speed at which the word has spread overseas regarding our unique take on ‘on-the-hoof’ means that our export focus has accelerated.’ N.B. Each bite (Vanilla & Salted Caramel is less than 30 calories a bite) This Christmas will also see Over the Moo initiate an eagerly anticipated ‘seasonal push’ within Costco. Overthemoo.co.uk

Find out what drives the beverage industry worldwide. Do you want to keep an eye on current topics along the entire process chain of the beverage industry? Brau Beviale 2023

Exhibitions

BrauBeviale in top form After a 4-year break in its exhibition schedule BrauBeviale in Nuremberg will start again from November 28-30, 2023. With a diverse range of exhibitors, precisely designed special areas and a broadly-based support program, visitors from the beer, soft drinks and mineral water industries, as well as from the wine, sparkling wine and spirits industries, will find practical solutions for their operational requirements in process technology, filling and packaging, or in logistics. At a press conference in Milan, the show organizers presented their program for this year and drew a close connection between the challenging economic environment and the clear responses offered by the show’s overall line-up. The organizers used three key topics to illustrate the current challenges in the beverage industry: In many segments, for example, consumption figures, and correspondingly production figures for many beverages, had not returned to 2019 levels even by the end of 2022. Furthermore, a shortage of appropriately skilled workers in the catering industry was contributing to the fact that out-of-home consumption in particular still had some catching up to do. Challenging economic environment There is always movement within the industry, and thus the number of breweries in Europe, with an increase of 614 during 2022, further demonstrates that forward-looking entrepreneurs continue to assess the potential in the European beverage market very positively. At the same time however, the enormous cost increases, which according to a survey by the German Brewers’ Association (Deutscher Brauer Bund), have resulted in a 140 percent increase in the price of new glass, a 135 percent increase in the price of carbon dioxide, and a 150 percent increase in the price of brewing malt, demand a high degree of flexibility in the procurement policies of beverage producers and breweries. In addition, the requirements recently published in the EU’s draft Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWR) bring new uncertainties, particularly with regard to the development of reusable packaging strategies in Europe. Solutions at BrauBeviale Beverage producers and brewers, as well as winemakers, are therefore

well advised to establish a solid basis for their investment programs by means of gathering comprehensive information on raw materials, new machinery, production solutions, or logistics concepts. BrauBeviale offers a comprehensive range of products and services for the entire process chain in nine halls covering approx. 40,000 m² of exhibition space with around 900 exhibitors. Alone 130 suppliers for packaging, closures, labelling, and secondary packaging will show their solutions for the tasks involved in productappropriate and efficient packaging. The pressing question of carbon dioxide supply, for example, will be addressed by 17 suppliers and answered with state-of-the-art solutions. Alternatively – raw material topics: answers to questions about securing raw materials can be discussed with a total of 88 suppliers. The product database is already online and can be accessed by all users in the beverage and brewing industry to obtain the comprehensive supplier information even before visiting the event. From July 25, the ticket store will be open so that planning for a visit to BrauBeviale can be easily started online. Support program for all visitor groups New in this year’s exhibition portfolio – around 70 percent of exhibitors will include an offering for the customer group winegrowers – is a special show on grape processing and cellar management in Hall 4A. In this way, the exhibition also offers interesting stimuli for operators in wine production. “We are investing in this special area,” explains Andrea Kalrait, Executive Director of BauBeviale, “in order to demonstrate that the range of products and services at BrauBeviale is very broadly diversified and that a visit is therefore also worthwhile for those in the wine industry.” The supporting program will again cover a wide range of topics: “Sustainability in the light of climate and market changes”, “Industry Hotspots Future” to “Corporate profiling via sustainability”, to “Containers, Systems under Pressure” and on to “Raw Materials” demonstrate how brewers and beverage producers or even vintners can deal with the current challenges. The Forum BrauBeviale in Hall 1 is the address for visitors who want to find impulses for this. Furthermore, this is also the address for all visitors with a focus on marketing: “Branding the Brain” or sustainability in brand communication are the current hot topics for all interested parties. But also the special areas with the Expert Forum, an exhibitor platform in Hall 4 or the Logistics Lounge, (also in Hall 4) will provide for knowledge enhancement and stimulating exchange. With the Craft Drinks Area in Hall 6, BauBeviale once again addresses a broad field of brewers and focuses on individual beer types and ingredients. The perfect place for beer connoisseurs or those who want to become one is the European Beer Star – this year in its 20th iteration. Over 500 breweries from 44 countries are sending entries. The brewers will showcase their brewing skills and face the critical palate of the jury.

The wide-ranging supporting program, which is free of charge for all visitors, will be available to view online at braubeviale.com from September. foodanddrinknetwork-uk.co.uk | 07

SGS explores the commercial opportunities available to manufacturers of paper-based packaging products The global paper-based packaging market is growing and by 2028 is expected to be worth USD 503.1 billion.[1] Reuse and recyclability are now key demands in many markets, so how can manufacturers demonstrate their paper-based packaging products are truly ‘green’? Packaging is important. It does more than just protect products; it also provides information about the contents and messaging about quality – high-quality packaging equates to a high-quality product in the mind of the consumer. A primary growth area for paper-based packaging is food contact packaging. The food contact packaging sector as a whole, incorporating all material types, is expected to grow from USD 331 billion in 2021 to USD 478 billion in 2028, with much of that growth predicted to be in the emerging markets of Asia and Latin America. Paper-based packaging constitutes the largest share of this market, with primary drivers being its adoption as a packaging material for a wide range of readily eatable foods, fresh vegetables and beverages, and its inherent sustainability. [2] Sustainability 50% of consumers now view sustainability as a ‘top 5 value driver,’ with 34% saying they are willing to pay more for sustainable products and services.[3] This push towards sustainability does not end with the product, it also includes the packaging. We are all more aware than ever before of the negative impacts of some packaging materials. Governments, industry and consumers are alert to the issues surrounding packaging waste, especially single-use plastics, and are actively looking for alternatives. Paper-based packaging makes a sensible alternative. There is a lot more to paper-based packaging than just paper bags. It can be formed into a variety of packaging types, including corrugated cardboard, folding cardboard boxes, pulp molded packaging, cartons, mailers/pouches and cushioning. Also, consumers appreciate the advantages of paper-based packaging, such as: • Widely recyclable • Often contains recycled materials • Bio-based – sourced from renewable plant materials and not fossil fuels • Better biodegradability • Can be made compatible with industrial composting • Facilitates food composting – easier channeling of food waste to composting Global initiatives Governments around the world are introducing legislation to encourage packaging recycling and the use of more sustainable

options. For example, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has an Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) program to encourage federal agencies to buy more sustainable products. [4] Similarly, Australian Federal Procurement Rules say packaging materials must contain at least 50% recycled materials, with paper packaging having a recycling content of 60%. In Europe, France is leading the way with laws such as its AntiWaste Law for a circular economy (AGEC), with progressive bans on single-use plastics, causing increased demand for paper alternatives. France has also introduced Decree 2022-748 (effective May 1, 2022), a mandatory directive requiring the proportion of recycled material to be identified and offer a 10% tax discount to manufacturers with paper packaging that has a recycled fiber content of over 50%. As consumers and government authorities push for more sustainable packaging options, the industry needs to respond in a way that is trusted and transparent. The only way to ensure paper-based packaging conforms to required standards for safety, performance and sustainability is through independent testing and audits. DTM Print

New EcoTec Label Line for Eco-Friendly Product Labelling Labels are a crucial part of any packaging. They have a strong impact on the purchasing process of consumers by drawing attention to a product. In addition, labels contain plenty of information that can influence consumers to buy a product or look for an alternative.

When buying a product, consumers also take into account how sustainable the product packaging and the used label are. Hence the question is plastic better than paper or vice versa? There is no general answer to this question. It is important though that the same materials are used for a packaging, for example a PET label on a PET bottle with a PET cap or a paper label on a cardboard box. Unlike composite packaging mono-packaging can be recycled as a whole and without the consumer having to manually separate the different materials that composite packaging are made of. If that doesn’t happen in advance the only way to recycle is thermal recycling, in other words waste incineration.

Eco-friendly printing solution DTM Print offers a range of different colour label printers. One of them is the LX610e Color Label Printer with the unique feature to print and cut any label shape with just one device in seconds. It combines colour inkjet label printing with a built-in digital diecutting mechanism, using an intuitive software with auto-trace function that will automatically find the edges of the artwork to print and cut out the label shape regardless of the complexity. LX610e supports an eco-friendly and sustainable business approach with a very low energy consumption, ultra-low weight by using less material, non-toxic ink supplies as well as 100% recyclable components.

In addition, the sustainability of a packaging can be increased by using environmentally friendly labels. DTM Print has bundled its selection of eco-friendly, recycled or natural labels under the new label line DTM EcoTec. As of now, the following four materials are part of the EcoTec line; further substrates will follow:

“To produce exceptional product labels for all kinds of applications you not only need advanced and resourcefriendly print technology as integrated in our colour label printers but also high-quality material,” explains Albion Bekolli, label specialist at DTM Print. “Every product leaves a footprint on our planet and using label material that is environmentally-friendly and sustainable helps to keep it as small as possible.”

DTM EcoTec Hemp Paper: This label consists of 100% hemp fibre. Hemp can be harvested up to three times a year, plantation trees only every seven years. Thanks to its fibres, which are five times longer than wood pulp, the material is particularly tearresistant and can be recycled very often. DTM EcoTec Grass Paper: The natural grass fibres of the label not only give the paper material its unique, natural look, but also reduce the amount of process water needed in the production process. The adhesive is an acrylic dispersion, permanent, solvent free and can be in direct food contact according to EU regulation No 10/2011. DTM EcoTec Paper Matte Nature: This paper label is made from 100% recycled backing from used label rolls. DTM EcoTec Poly Clear Gloss R90: It is a glossy clear poly label, which consists of 90% post-consumer recycled (also known as PCR) PET material. It features the same clarity, mechanical properties and printing characteristics as its non-PCR counterpart “DTM Poly Clear Gloss”. Using PCR material also establishes more recycling volume for the plastic production process and industry. In addition, the water-soluble adhesive of the aforementioned labels is below 0.01%. That means, it also passes the recycling process.

DataLase

DataLase achieves Grade A RecyClass Certification for plastic bottles using innovative label-free pigment technology DataLase, a world leader in photonic printing, has developed an innovative solution to address the environmental issues surrounding single-use plastic bottles. Their technology allows for the decoration of HDPE plastic bottles without the need for labels, inks, or other filmic material.

DataLase’s unique pigment, added during the masterbatch stage of HDPE bottle production, remains invisible until activated by laser. This technology, which has been tested and certified by RecyClass, the first approved certification system for plastic packaging recyclability, received a Grade A rating. Achieving the highest possible level indicates that ‘the packaging does not pose any recyclability issues and the recycled plastics can potentially feed a closed-loop scheme to be used in the same quality application’. The certification process, which included a stringent examination of the product’s chemical constituents and practical recycling tests, is valid until 2026 and highlights DataLase’s commitment to global sustainability goals. The achievement was made in collaboration with Innovate UK as part of a funded project. DataLase’s label-free pigment technology for plastic bottles offers significant benefits. The pigment is incorporated at low concentrations, ensuring no contamination or coloration during the bottle recycling process, and provides an energyefficient alternative to direct surface printing with wet-inks or surface destructive etching.

12 | foodanddrinknetwork-uk.co.uk

Furthermore, DataLase’s label-free solution eliminates the need for labels, inks, and consumables on plastic bottles, simplifying supply chains, lowering energy costs and lessening environmental impact. The durable graphics, barcodes, QR codes and serial numbers incorporated within the plastic bottle ensure its integrity is not compromised. The one-step method of incorporation makes the solution easy to use and implement. Commenting on the achievement, DataLase’s chief technology officer, Ally Grant, said: “We are delighted to be awarded a grade A certification for our technology. DataLase is revolutionising the plastic bottle industry by providing a solution that allows for decoration without compromising the recyclability of the bottles. This innovative solution not only potentially helps to address recyclability issues in the plastic bottle industry, but also empowers supply chain stakeholders in their sustainability efforts.” To find out more about DataLase visit www.DataLase.com

Love at first bite

Already settled among Argentine consumers, bon-o-bon was the first bonbon to establish the ‘Sweetness Week’ with its classic slogan, “a bon-o-bon for a kiss”.

Bon-o-Bon was established in 1984, when Fulvio Pagani sought to introduce a tempting, chocolate confectionery, aimed to be within everybody’s reach. Covered in a high-quality milk or white chocolate; these tasty, melt in your mouth bite sized truffles have a distinctive biscuit-like truffle within and are perfect to have as a snack, or to share with someone you love. Exporting 70% of its production to more than 60 countries, including the UK, this dynamic and fun brand have become the most famous, market leaders of chocolates, supplying the most popular and delicious treats in Argentina.

Bon-o-Bon’s packaging needed to compliment the idea of the products being brought back from travelling as a gift or present, so with our help, we established a recyclable material for both their packing formats whilst providing a premium look and feel. The patterned matt lacquer on the 25OPE/80PE pouch gives a distinctive contrast against the naturally glossy polyethylene material, offering a greater shelf presence.

The partnership with WHSmith will see the Bon-o-Bon brand land in travel and airport stores in the UK and major European countries and their travelling customers represent the ideal target audience for the delicious peanut butter with waffle chocolate as they are more discerning for impulse gifting. “We’re excited to be working with Arcor and the much-loved Bon-o-Bon choc brand. This supports our strategy of offering our travelling customers a wider range of the best international brands,” said Ben Storey, Senior Buyer, WHSmith Travel.

Four Corners Gin

Four Corners Gin:

A True Taste of America

Four Corners Gin is a unique gin that celebrates the essence of America through its unique blend of botanicals sourced from right across the United States.

It took a year to find the perfect botanicals that could represent the vast and diverse landscapes of America and almost another year to perfect the recipe. The result is a gin that pays homage to America’s stunning landscapes and iconic regions. It encapsulates the great American road trip in a bottle. Unlike most American gins that either draw from a specific region or incorporate foreign botanicals, Four Corners Gin is a celebration of the wealth of botanicals found in America. The continent’s unparalleled geographical diversity provides everything needed to craft what Four Corners believes is the world’s finest gin. Recognizing the significance of visual appeal in the world of spirits, the creators of Four Corners Gin aimed to fuse two iconic American styles into their packaging: the elegance of the Art Deco era, which pioneered cocktail culture, and the classic soda shop seltzer bottle. This blend resulted in a striking bluehued bottle adorned with a bold off-centred X decal, vividly narrating their unique story. Berlin Packaging played an essential role in creating the aesthetically beautiful and technically sound bottle that was competitively priced. They provided the added benefit of having a complete packaging solution and a local manager who was a direct point of contact. The team at Berlin

suggested a Vinolok Deco glass closure, which complemented the bottle design perfectly. Both the decoration, decal, and closure achieved the standout factor that was intended on the shelf. The ultimate goal was to create an aesthetically beautiful bottle that would captivate consumers. With Berlin Packaging’s assistance, this goal was unequivocally achieved. The feedback from consumers, media, content creators and trade has been overwhelmingly positive. The bottle’s design has encouraged active reuse as a water decanter, flower vase, candle or diffuser holder. The entire packaging, including the Vinolok closure, is recyclable, aligning with their commitment to sustainability. Looking ahead Four Corners Gin continues to collaborate with Berlin Packaging to enhance its sustainability efforts. They are exploring the incorporation of recycled glass into production and reducing the bottle’s weight. In summary, Four Corners Gin is a testament to the diverse beauty of America, encapsulating it in a visually striking and environmentally responsible package, thanks to the partnership with Berlin Packaging. This gin is more than just a beverage; it’s a symbol of innovation, craftsmanship, and a true taste of America.

Why FMCG contract supplier networks are turning to digitalisation Josephine Coombe, Chief Commercial Officer, Europe, Nulogy

In a volatile consumer market, the world’s leading fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands are increasingly turning to contract manufacturers, 3PLs and co-packers to handle late-stage customisation work and new product innovations. Product launches that involve seasonal localised, or premiumised packaging are all often outsourced to the external manufacturing or co-pack network. In relying on external partners, however, FMCGs risk losing visibility into the status of production and quality, which can hinder agility in the market and response times, and can thus risk damaging their brand reputation.

Specialist View

Find out how a Small Reduction in Production Costs can Dramatically Increase your Net Profit An article By Roy Green, Harford Control Ltd. November 2023

We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiastic responses and the immense interest generated during the PPMA event. Many attendees expressed a keen desire for additional information on wastage reduction and cost-saving strategies in manufacturing. It’s great to witness the industry’s resolute commitment to enhancing performance. Throughout the event, we had the privilege of listening to numerous manufacturers share their unique stories and challenges. During the event, we saw three types of visitors:

1. Some manufacturers recognised that they were lagging behind and were eager to initiate comprehensive improvements in their production processes immediately. 2. Others believed it was premature to take action and were not yet ready to invest capital in performance enhancements. 3. A few manufacturers preferred to maintain the status quo in their production processes, opting not to pursue improvements. Drawing from insights gleaned through the FDF State of Industry Survey, we observed that 54% of manufacturers prioritise innovation, while 41% focus on adapting their supply chains and restructuring operations. Additionally, 49% of respondents are planning to increase their capital investment expenditure over the next 12 months. These statistics underscore the majority of manufacturers’ commitment to growth, alongside their aspirations to reduce internal costs and enhance the bottom line.

Harford Control Ltd. In the words of Charles Darwin, “It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is best able to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.” From the survey, we can see many manufacturers are awakening to the need for proactive adaptation in response to the evolving industrial landscape.

Unlock the Opportunities for Financial Growth

Building on this backdrop of industry dynamics and the drive for excellence, our encounter with a vegetable manufacturer at the event stands as a potent example. The manufacturer was seeking a holistic MIS/MES solution to enhance their production process and reduce costs. To gain a deeper insight into their business, we delved into their annual accounts at Companies House. What we uncovered was truly eye-opening. This company’s impressive turnover stood at £400 million. However, a glance at their cost of sales justified a deeper look. The cost of sales had escalated to £390 million, leaving the gross profit at a mere £10 million. When factoring in other operational and administrative expenses, their net profit (before tax) was just £5 million. Imagine this scenario: even a mere 1% reduction in the Cost of Sales, as illustrated here, would result in a remarkable addition of £3.9 million to the bottom-line profit. That’s an almost 80% boost in the bottom line, all from a 1% reduction in the Cost of Sales. Such a transformation is not only realistic, but also a recurring reality that we’ve witnessed in numerous production sites. We’re fully geared up to help many more manufacturers achieve similar improvements. Our consultative approach consistently emphasises a deeper focus on performance improvement with a keen eye on the Cost of Sales, as this is often the largest area of expenditure and where substantial growth opportunities can be unlocked. So, what can we do to reduce the cost of sales?

Don’t Underestimate the Impact of Wastage

Wastage is a major issue, and it is everywhere throughout food manufacturing operations, from goods-in to despatch. Some obvious examples include wastage due to incorrect labels on packaging and overfilling.

During a visit to a coffee manufacturer, we were shocked by the quantity of wasted aluminised packs. The production line commenced at 8 am, and by 9 am, two substantial dump bags were already overflowing with this wasted, expensive packaging. To investigate this wastage, we embarked on a Gemba walk. We discovered that one of the primary reasons for these wasted coffee bags was the absence of date codes on the labels. The heater was not hot enough to imprint the date code, necessitating the disposal of many of these packaging bags. Others were due to inadequate pack seals and checkweigher rejects. Overfilling presented another critical and common wastage issue. During a pack weight audit of a milk factory supplying to schools, we noticed that every carton was filled beyond the required level by circa 10%. You might think this is an insignificant amount of milk, not seriously affecting costs. However, when we tallied the costs of this overfilling, it amounted to a daily loss of £450. Bearing in mind this was just one product on one production line, scaled up across the factory, the losses through overfill alone amounted to more than £0.5million per year. These instances represent just a couple of straightforward examples of wastage. By addressing and minimising these forms of wastage and enhancing your operational efficiency, you can significantly improve your bottom line. This is where Harford can step in and provide invaluable assistance.

A Fresh Perspective for your Business The Harford system is built to scale across entire factories, from goods-in to dispatch. Whether the challenges stem from mislabelling, quality issues, overfilling or lost efficiency, waste information can be collected, analysed and distributed in real-time to networked PCs, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. This empowers operators to make immediate adjustments, while managers gain the insights needed to make well-informed decisions on the spot. Compliance, quality, efficiency and yield can be comprehensively improved upon through the excellence of the Harford MIS/MES solution, coupled with the diligence and engagement of your production teams. This has frequently proven to reduce the cost of sales, thereby significantly improving pre-tax profits. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh perspective to uncover growth opportunities within your production process. If you’re ready to explore these possibilities, please reach out to us. Krones at BrauBeviale 2023 Food & Drink Network UK, 133 x 186 mm, Digitalisation M, CC-en91-AZ211 01/23

What would a BrauBeviale be without an insight into the development forge of Steinecker? This one is all about sustainability. With Brewnomic, the Freising team has set the industry standard for some time in order to make the brewing process energy self-sufficient and CO2 neutral and offers various concepts for energy recovery, residue recycling or process water saving. However, Steinecker does not only use its decades of expertise in process engineering for beer: Also products such as vegan alternatives to milk, meat or chocolate can be produced with the technology from Freising. At the BrauBeviale, Steinecker will show for the first time a bio reactor for the biotechnological production of alternative foods based on precision fermentation or biomass production with microalgae, fungi, microorganisms or other cell cultures. At the BrauBeviale, Krones presents the latest generation of the well-known beverage mixing system Contiflow. The revised machine design includes an integrated syrup supply

tank. On the one hand, syrup losses can be significantly minimised, an advantage that kicks in especially when the line and syrup room are not directly next to each other. On the other hand, depending on the tank concept, the changeover times can also be reduced, as the syrup of the next type can already be supplied in a second tank during ongoing production. Another highlight on the Krones stand is the Modulfill HES. The glass filler for beer and CSD is showcased with numerous further developments and innovations, such as the new filling valve, which improves machine hygiene and process times during filling. Of course, this was only a small glimpse of what Krones has in store in Hall 7A, Stand 510: With innovations from inspection technology, sustainable packaging solutions like LitePac Top or current projects from Kosme, KIC Krones and Evoguard, there are plenty more exciting solutions to discover.

FEG Global

Sustainability L-R Stuart Turnbull, Project Director and Akhil Surendran, Senior Project Engineer.

FEG Global Awarded Contract for International Sustainable Factory Design with WhatIF Foods North-East based Engineering Project Management company FEG Global has won the WhatIF contract for the concept design and feasibility phase of a new, sustainable factory in Tamale, Africa. A co-production facility, the site is as innovative as it is sustainable, using a self-sufficient model that co-generates its own energy through the pyrolysis process and use of agri-waste to create Biochar. As well as the sophisticated energy recovery operations, the site brings further positive environmental impact through acting as a community hub in its local town near Tamale, creating hundreds of jobs for direct employees and support services. FEG Global Managing Director Chris Williams said, “This was a chance to get involved with a company with a vision to change how things are done, and to look at meaningful energy recovery in a co-producing set-up. On top of this it is a project which helps farmers get out of poverty and provides good quality employment. We are proud to be involved in a project like this that can make a difference to the future of food production.” The WhatIF factory will produce various food products through the processing of bamnuts, including milk, milk powder and noodles. The discarded bamnut shells will go directly into the energy-production process of the plant to produce some 39GWh per annum by 2030 and become a entirely self-powering facility. Key to the awarding of the contract was an understanding of

how to design a site that could maintain the varying balance between food production and energy requirements within the daily processes, something that the engineering team at FEG Global were happy to work on with many years of both food production design and heat recovery under their belts. Chris from WhatIF foods said, “FEG Global stood out for us with their obvious experience in many areas of food production. Allergen Testing

Safeguarding Food Safety In the intricate landscape of food and feed processing, ensuring safety and compliance with legislation is paramount. Mycotoxins, naturally occurring toxic compounds produced by certain molds, pose a significant threat to the safety of food and feed products.

To address this concern, mycotoxin test kits have emerged as invaluable tools in the processing procedure, offering a reliable means to detect and quantify these contaminants. Understanding Mycotoxins Mycotoxins are toxic byproducts of fungal growth that can contaminate a wide range of agricultural products, including grains, nuts, and animal feed. These compounds are known for their harmful effects on both human and animal health. To ensure the safety of consumables, regulatory bodies around the world have established strict limits on mycotoxin levels in food and feed products. The Importance of Compliance Adhering to regulatory standards is not only a legal requirement but also crucial for maintaining public health and consumer trust. Failure to comply with mycotoxin regulations can lead to severe consequences, including product recalls, legal repercussions, and damage to a brand’s reputation. Therefore, implementing robust testing procedures throughout the processing chain is essential. Role of Mycotoxin Test Kits Mycotoxin test kits play a pivotal role in the monitoring and control of mycotoxin levels in food and feed products. These kits are designed to detect and quantify specific mycotoxins quickly and accurately. They provide a user-friendly and cost-effective solution for manufacturers to conduct routine testing, ensuring that their products meet the required safety standards. Eco-Fill Autoclaves The integration of eco-fill autoclaves in the food and drink industry represents a significant step towards sustainable and responsible production. As businesses prioritise environmental stewardship, these innovative sterilisation machines offer a dual advantage of maintaining high standards of safety and quality while reducing the industry’s ecological footprint. Water Activity Monitoring Image courtesy of Process Sensing Technologies ProcessSensing.com

Innovative Bluetooth water activity meter from Rotronic sets new standards Rotronic, part of Process Sensing Technology (PST) and the specialized manufacturer of humidity and temperature instrumentation, has launched a combined Bluetooth Water Activity meter with smartphone and tablet app. Called the AwEasy, the new stand-alone instrument is advanced, lightweight and compact, and is designed to produce extremely accurate reading simply and quickly – up to ten times faster than traditional devices. This makes it ideal for use by laboratory analysts, quality control teams and production staff who need to take spot-water activity measurements in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and chemical industries. The new AwEasy is the most recent addition to Rotronic’s existing range of water activity analyzers, meters and probes. The company believes that it is the first of its type to offer both Bluetooth connectivity with the ability to use a smartphone or tablet app, to store and analyze data and then automatically output reports as pdf documents, for use in quality control and traceability regimes. The AwEasy features a robust stainless steel and aluminum housing, measuring just 65mm tall and 68mm in diameter, with a top-mounted color LCD display, indicator ring and single control button. The instrument also incorporates Rotronic’s latest humidity and temperature sensing technologies. These are capable of providing levels of accuracy to within plus or minus 0.008aw, which is far better than competing devices in the same price range, while ensuring exceptional repeatability and stability.

Set-up and operation is carried out via the iOS or Android compatible app, with measurement simply requiring a test name and batch number. Analysis is automatic and can be displayed in detail, as raw data or on a choice of charts, with reports being exportable as pdf or csv files. The AwEasy has also been designed to minimize the time required for water activity measurements. These normally take up to 50 minutes, but with the AwEasy in Quick Function mode this time can be significantly reduced to around 5 minutes. Combined with the in-depth analysis reports, this enables the new AwEasy to offer considerable improvements in productivity, quality control and traceability. In areas such as factory environments, where connectivity may be an issue, or where the use of Smartphones is prohibited, the new AwEasy can be used on its own. Control of each analysis can be carried out directly from the front panel, with data being displayed on the LCD control panel and then automatically uploaded once the smartphone is back within range. As part of the PST group, Rotronic is able to provide a comprehensive range of technical and sales support services, including training, sensor calibration and repairs.

Saving on maintenance costs with digital services Emsland Frischgeflügel GmbH (Emsland Fresh Poultry GmbH) Saving 70 percent on maintenance costs and receiving a 30 percent subsidy: How Emsland Frischgeflügel GmbH succeeds with its new vacuum system from Busch Vacuum Solutions and why its technicians can now sleep soundly on weekends. Johannes Kohne and his colleague look attentively at the large screen in his office. What they see is the current performance data of all their vacuum pumps. “Everything is running smoothly,” says the Technical Manager of Emsland Frischgeflügel. Each pump’s data is available in real-time on the tablets of all 60 company technicians. This means that they always know the system’s current condition and can intervene if something does not run properly. Just a few rooms down, the 36 MINK vacuum pumps from Busch Vacuum Solutions are purring away. Very reliably, they supply the site’s transport system with vacuum. This ensures that waste from meat production, as well as ready-to-eat products, can be transported from Point A to Point B safely, effectively and hygienically by pneumatic suction conveying. QUALITY RIGHT FROM THE START “We don’t throw anything away; everything is processed – for human consumption or as high-quality animal feed,” emphasizes Kohne. The unconditional quality standard applies throughout the entire company: in their vacuum supply and products, as well as working conditions and animal welfare. 30 | foodanddrinknetwork-uk.co.uk

OTTO – DIGITAL SERVICES FROM BUSCH But that’s not all! Kohne also took advantage of digitalization for the changeover and had all 36 MINK pumps fitted with OTTO, the digital service innovation from Busch. In other words, they permanently send performance data such as pump temperature, vibrations, and inlet pressure to the cloud, which can then be accessed via PC, tablet or smartphone. “How high the transmission oil temperature is, whether the inlet pressure is constant, how high the exhaust air temperature is – we didn’t know all that before. And now, thanks to OTTO, we even have it on our tablet via the app,” says Kohne enthusiastically. “And thanks to the excellent cooperation between our IT department and Busch experts, the installation in our system has also worked extremely well.” Emsland Frischgeflügel has also signed an Active Service Contract for maintenance with Busch and trusts the vacuum specialists from Maulburg for maintenance. Through targeted, predictive maintenance, excessive wear and premature failure can be prevented. And in the event of a problem, Busch technicians can also connect to the system remotely.

Food Machinery Auctions

Maximising Efficiency and Savings

MAXIMISING EFFICIENCY AND SAVINGS:

The Benefits of Food Machinery Auctions

In the ever-evolving world of food production, efficiency is key. As technology advances and industries grow, the need for state-of-the-art machinery becomes crucial for maintaining high standards and meeting growing demands. However, acquiring new equipment can be a significant financial investment. This is where food machinery auctions come into play, offering a cost-effective solution for both purchasing used machinery and selling surplus equipment. One of the primary advantages of participating in food machinery auctions is the potential for significant cost savings. New food production machinery often comes with a hefty price tag, making it a challenging investment for smaller businesses or those looking to optimise their budget. Auctions provide a platform where buyers can acquire high-quality, used machinery at a fraction of the cost, allowing businesses to allocate their resources more efficiently. Food machinery auctions attract a wide range of sellers, including manufacturers, distributors, and businesses undergoing upgrades or closures. This diverse pool of sellers results in a broad selection of machinery being offered at auctions. Whether you are in the market for packaging equipment, processing machinery, or refrigeration units, auctions provide access to a variety of options, giving buyers the opportunity to find the specific equipment that meets their production needs. Auctions are known for their transparency, as they allow buyers to inspect equipment thoroughly before making a purchase. Sellers provide detailed information about the condition, usage history, and maintenance records of the machinery they are offering. This transparency ensures that buyers can make informed decisions, mitigating the risk associated with purchasing used equipment. Food machinery auctions offer a faster turnaround compared to traditional methods of buying and selling equipment. The auction process is streamlined, allowing buyers to acquire the equipment they need promptly. Similarly, sellers can quickly liquidate surplus machinery, freeing up valuable space and capital for other business needs. Online food machinery auctions have a global reach, connecting buyers and sellers from different parts of the world. This expanded marketplace provides businesses with the opportunity to access a broader range of equipment and potentially find better deals than what might be available locally. By participating in food machinery auctions, businesses contribute to sustainable practices by extending the lifecycle of machinery. Reusing and repurposing equipment through auctions reduces the environmental impact associated with manufacturing new machinery. It aligns with the growing trend of corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability in the business world. Food machinery auctions have emerged as a strategic avenue for businesses to optimise their operations, both in terms of purchasing used equipment and selling surplus machinery. The cost savings, diverse selection, transparency, quick turnaround, global reach, and environmental benefits make auctions an attractive option for those in the food production industry. Embracing the auction platform can be a smart and sustainable approach to meeting the demands of a dynamic and competitive market. 32 | foodanddrinknetwork-uk.co.uk
