CORROSION RESISTANT SOLUTIONS FROM

In an environment of increased operational requirements and tough regulatory guidelines, today’s bearings and power transmission products are exposed to a host of demanding conditions. Such conditions may include corrosive cleaning agents, high pressure washdown and a wide array of environmental factors that can negatively impact performance.

O

verall, a balance of material strength and corrosion resistance, sealing and lubrication are required for all products used where hygiene is of paramount importance. Due to the pandemic we’ve seen an increased attention to cleanliness, washdown procedures, and prevention of foreign contaminants from getting into the manufacturing process within fish

processing, food and beverage companies. Recently there has been concern about meat processing, a rise in contamination in fruits and vegetables and this has changed procedures in food manufacturing across the board. The result is that processers have become more aggressive with cleaning. While the positive is that cleaner equipment means a lower risk of contamination, older equipment

06

just isn’t built to handle this aggressive cleaning. As your facility continues to follow government guidelines using components made from corrosion resistant materials will help to extend the life of the product and cut down on nuisance maintenance, even when using some of the newer, harsher cleaning chemicals. Stainless steel tends to hold up the best, allowing for

Sustainable packaging s & labelling legislation Many of today’s food and beverage products are increasingly being packaged with sustainable materials, resulting in further growth for the market. A major catalyst in this process is the emergence of sustainable packaging materials that reduce the impact on the environment.

A

ccording to a recent report from ResearchAndMarkets.com, sustainable packaging is defined as an approach towards packaging that is sourced, developed, and used in a way that minimises environmental impact. Environmental concerns have led to a greater interest in sustainable packaging and processing operations due to consumer awareness. As part

of sustainability initiatives, manufacturers have reduced the source material by downgrading, creating thinner and lighter packaging, and reducing waste. Modern consumers increasingly consider ecofriendliness, ethics, quality, safety, and product costs when selecting products. Legislative packaging regulations also enforce a number of these issues, which will benefit the global green packaging market.

As the packaging materials can be recycled, renewed, and reused, eco-friendly biodegradable wrapping materials like paper and paper boards contribute to maintaining the sustainability of the environment. A more environmentally friendly packaging solution is needed to reduce the huge amount of solid waste generated each year. The rise of ‘zero waste’ shops and the

High-precision labelling from Germany

PACKAGING & LABELLING TRENDS

g solutions sharp increase in the use of refillable water bottles are just a few examples of how consumers are contributing to the reduction of waste. The majority of consumers believe it’s time to move away from single-use packaging in favour of packaging made from recycled materials. A change in consumer attitude towards plastic packaging and waste is starting to affect businesses, and they are making changes as a result. Sustainable practices are now a priority for many businesses since they understand that losing paying customers will cost them if it is not implemented correctly. The consumer pressure to be more environmentally responsible has resulted in businesses adopting voluntary targets and initiatives that go beyond regulatory requirements.

Plastic Packaging Tax A new Plastic Packaging Tax will be introduced in the UK in April 2022. This new tax will apply to plastic packaging manufactured in, or imported into the UK, which does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic. Plastic packaging is packaging that is predominantly plastic by weight.

It will not apply to any plastic packaging which contains at least 30% recycled plastic, or any packaging which is not predominantly plastic by weight. Imported plastic packaging will be liable to the tax, whether the packaging is unfilled or filled. The aim of the tax is to provide a clear economic incentive for businesses to use recycled plastic in the manufacture of plastic packaging, which will create greater demand for this material. In turn, this will stimulate increased levels of recycling and collection of plastic waste, diverting it away from landfill or incineration.

New Allergen Labelling Millions of people living with food allergies, intolerances and coeliac disease will be able to make safer choices about the food they buy as a new allergen labelling law came into effect in October 2021. The changes, also known as Natasha’s Law, require businesses to label all food that is prepacked for direct sale with a full list of ingredients, with the 14 major allergens emphasised in the list. They were introduced following the death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who died after

09

eating a pre-packaged baguette which at the time did not require ingredients labelling. Products that will now need to be labelled include pre-wrapped sandwiches, fast food that’s already in packaging before a customer places their order, and supermarket items such as cheeses and meat from the deli counter that are already wrapped and ready to be served. The new law applies to foods packaged on the same site at which they are sold before being ordered; foods pre-packaged elsewhere already require full ingredients labelling, with allergens emphasised in the list. According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the law creates more consistency in the labelling of pre-packed products and gives more protection for people with food allergies and intolerances when purchasing ‘grab and go’ foods.

“A CHANGE IN CONSUMER ATTITUDE TOWARDS PLASTIC PACKAGING AND WASTE IS STARTING TO AFFECT BUSINESSES, AND THEY ARE MAKING CHANGES AS A RESULT. “

LOMA SYSTEMS® X-RAY DETECTION SOLUTION STRIKES THE RIGHT BALANCE FOR KEPAK Leading meat processor, the Kepak Group, has recently invested in eight X5 Space Saver X-ray units from LOMA SYSTEMS®. Rustlers, a top 100 brand in the UK and Europe, which is built around taste, convenience and quality. Food safety standards are a major focus at Kirkham, which consistently achieves the highest grades in food safety & quality audits.

for detecting softer contaminants such as bone, ceramic and glass. In addition, X-ray would check the product’s integrity, plus product weight and volume to a 3g tolerance. The X-ray solution also needed to deliver a line throughput of 100 packs/minute to meet production requirements.

mploying over 4,500 people across 12 manufacturing facilities throughout Ireland and the UK, the family-owned group processes a broad range of fresh and value added meat products, serving the international foodservice and retail markets with prime cuts of meat, on-trend foodservice solutions and market leading consumer brands. Their portfolio includes Rustlers, Big Al’s, Feasters, Stript Snacks and Celtic Beef.

All of the site’s 8 processing lines had been using an ageing mix of metal detectors and checkweighers, which were not suitable to detect softer contaminants such as bones, as well as ensuring that a sauce sachet and cheese slice were correctly placed in the packs. Kepak wanted to increase their detection capabilities, but also continue to weigh their products and check product integrity, all within a smaller footprint.

Following extensive consultation, Loma was appointed to supply the Kirkham site with 8 of their market-leading, compact X5 Space Saver X-ray units, providing the very best detection levels - 0.4mm for very small metal contaminants and 0.8mm to 1.6mm to find softer contaminants.

Kepak’s Kirkham-UK site mainly manufactures a range of microwavable burgers and hot sandwiches that come in clear 100% recyclable packs, with additions such as cheese and sauce. The facility produces

Due to the complexities presented by the final ‘on-the-go’ burger product, it was decided that each line should have a new X-ray machine, to provide best-in-class metal contaminant detection and an equally impressive capability

E

Providing a line length of just 1000mm, the X-ray units were installed into Kepak’s production lines, successfully meeting Kepak’s exacting quality requirements for contaminant and product integrity checks, while providing first-class CCP protection. “We had very high expectations of Loma’s X-ray machines, which, given the nature of our product types, needed some detailed scoping to get the equipment to function perfectly,” said Lee Arkinstall, Project & Improvement Manager, Food Division, Kepak. “Once that had been achieved, we were delighted with the end result. Stringent HYGIENE AND FOOD SAFETY standards Food and consumer safety is of huge importance, and quality control is imperative throughout the production process. To ensure product integrity and to safeguard the quality of food products, it is vital that food processing companies invest in reliable and innovative solutions to prevent contamination and to maintain stringent hygiene and food safety standards.

FOOD SAFETY TESTING Food safety is an essential part of preserving consumer’s health and wellbeing; and globally, it is one of the most crucial issues. According to a report from ResearchAndMarkets.com, food supply is under constant threat around the world, and effective test products that can ensure food safety are in demand. Food safety testing means inspecting food products for disease-causing chemicals, organisms, and other hazardous materials. It mainly targets three primary food contaminants: pathogens, chemicals, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). However, the rising number of foodborne diseases, adulteration cases, and toxicity have threatened food safety and raised the need for food safety testing. Developing consumer interest in food quality with high technological advancements drives the food safety testing market worldwide. 12

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the food market, highlighting the significance of safe, healthy, and nutritious eating. Therefore, food security and food sustainability are recognised as strongly affected dimensions of food systems during the COVID-19 pandemic. Firm diligence on food safety will help countries mitigate the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic and enhance their strength for the long term by promoting and stimulating food and agricultural trade. Across the world, there are rising food poisoning cases due to mishandling of raw poultry and consumption of undercooked poultry and unpasteurised milk, implementing stringent food safety regulations, and expanding consumer awareness regarding health. Worldwide, consumers’ expanding demand for fresh and appropriate products has led to food security in the food industry.

SAFETY & HYGIENE

Additionally, the relatively high occurrence of foodborne diseases in many countries has raised concern and intense investigation of foodborne pathogens. Therefore, globally, there is a rising demand for the ‘Traditional Microbiology’ testing of food products. Microbiological testing aims to identify and restrict the growth of harmful microorganisms, leading to spoilage of foods, therefore ensuring safety from foodborne diseases.

will help the industry understand when to clean, how to clean and what chemicals to use to remove physical, chemical, and microbiological contaminants. To achieve this, the comprehensive guideline covers a number of specific areas, including:

FOOD FACTORY HYGIENE

• how to eliminate the virus that causes COVID-19 from a factory environment the various methods of cleaning and disinfection

During 2020, Campden BRI updated guidance on the design, implementation and control of cleaning and disinfection of food factories. The revised version is helping food and drink manufacturers to ensure their factories are cleaned and disinfected effectively so that they maintain a high hygienic standard and continue to produce safe products. This comes as a result of close collaboration with industry experts to align it with changes in the management of hygiene in food production ensuring it reflects the most up-to-date thinking, research, and developments. Phil Voysey, senior microbiologist and editor of the updated guidelines, said: “The coronavirus pandemic has seen factory cleaning prioritised like never before, but even prior to the public health crisis, food businesses needed to comply with the EU regulations related to the hygiene of foodstuffs to remain in business. We’re excited to release this revised version because it is not only up to date with the relevant regulations but is also refreshed with recent developments in the area of factory hygiene, including new controls and cleaning chemical products.”

• how to select the appropriate chemicals – based on differences in equipment, facilities and ingredients/foods being handled

• the equipment needed to carry out effective cleaning • how to build cleaning schedules the timing and frequency of cleaning, and • how to monitor factory cleanliness and verify that cleaning has been carried out successfully. Campden BRI collaborated with a working party made up of the food industry to ensure the guideline document – Cleaning and disinfection of food factories: a practical guide (Second edition) 2020 – is relevant to manufacturers and covers many of the cleaning-related challenges that they will come across. The new guidance is available from Campden BRI.

Food manufacturers, retailers and regulatory bodies prepared the new guidance in conjunction with Campden BRI scientists to provide a single source of information on cleaning and disinfecting a food factory. It

“The coronavirus pandemic has seen factory cleaning prioritised like never before, but even prior to the public health crisis, food businesses needed to comply with the EU regulations related to the hygiene of foodstuffs to remain in business.”

HIGH STANDARDS OF SANITATION Today’s food processing facilities must meet the requirements of regular audits. It is crucial to have systems in place which will pass the high standards of sanitation needed in today’s fast-paced food processing environments. The food and drink industry must adhere to strict guidelines for good hygiene and sanitation. HACCP procedures must be followed, and all machinery and equipment must be thoroughly cleaned and maintained to avoid contamination and to ensure maximum food safety. An increased number of food businesses are therefore working hard to improve and enhance their food safety management systems. The aim is to operate a clean and sanitised production and processing area, where contamination is minimised.

growth and water migration. This can lead to clumping, changes in consistency and reduced shelf-life. Manufacturers of foods and pharmaceutical products must, for example, show to the FDA and other authorities, that the water activity of a product has declined to such an extent that bacteria can no longer grow. Measurement solutions have therefore been developed by experts to ensure accurate results and to maintain product quality.

A food industry without measurement technology is inconceivable. Experts in this sector can therefore provide industry leading measurement devices for relative humidity, temperature, carbon dioxide, differential pressure and water activity used in all industries where superior measurement accuracy, stability and reliability are essential.

The measurement of physical parameters such as temperature and relative humidity is essential, both in the receiving inspection of incoming goods, storage, drying and baking processes, as well as in the transport of sensitive products. Water activity also plays an extremely important role in determining product quality.

According to experts, for quality control of the dry meat product, the aw value, which is determined with water activity instruments, is of decisive importance as sufficient moisture must be removed from the meat before packing so that no bacterial growth sets in and no condensation forms in the cellophane wrapping. The aim is to achieve a water activity level that allows for maximum retail weight with minimum bacterial growth.

PALLETISING SYSTEMS & EQUIPMENT

STATE-OF-THE-ART

palletising systems and solutions

The future of the supply chain is evolving as technology becomes more advanced than ever before. Automated solutions are now widely used for materials handling, and robotic palletising systems are used by many manufacturers to streamline the process and enhance end of line packaging systems in the factory or warehouse.

F

uture Market Insights predicts that the demand for robotic palletisers and depalletisers is likely to rise considerably in the future, and the food and beverages industry has emerged as the leading end user. Articulated robotic palletisers take up little space and are therefore preferred amongst many manufacturers. In this modern digital era, robotic palletisers are equipped with artificial intelligence in order to minimise errors and the probability of products being wrongly handled – they are therefore the ideal solution in many factories and warehouses worldwide.

delivery are believed to be driving the global pallet stretch wrapping machines market.

According to another report from Transparency Market Research, a growing demand for stable and efficient packaging, an increasing need for packed goods, and the rising demand for speed and secure product

Palletising systems are used when product versatility is required. The optimisation of the palletising equipment is performed by buffer systems, collaborating with robots or mechanical palletisers.

Pallet stretch wrappers are equipped with new designs and features to meet consumer demands. This type of wrapping machine helps in the unitisation of loads with effective and stable wrapping of heavy products on the pallet. Pallet stretch wrapping machines require minimal operator intervention. These machines are therefore an essential packaging solution for many manufacturers in the food and drink, retail, and logistics sectors.

Further research from IndustryARC suggests that the global palletising systems market has experienced an increase in demand in recent years. A palletiser is a machine which is used for transporting and storing goods stacked on a pallet and shipped as a unit load. It permits standardised ways of loading and the securing of boxes, bags, and drums on a pallet base. Palletising systems are used when product versatility is required. The optimisation of the palletising equipment is performed by buffer systems, collaborating with robots or mechanical palletisers. Mechanical palletising machines are particularly suitable for heavy load and high-speed applications with one or two different types of crates. Meanwhile, the robotic palletising system is designed to accumulate crates from different packaging lines simultaneously. It is a flexible system allowing the creation of pallets with numerous products, crates, and varieties from different production lines. Experts in this sector are able to supply complete lines incorporating, for example, case packers, sleeve wrappers, metal detectors, check weighers and pack/ pallet labellers. ‘Turnkey’ solutions can also be provided including case and pallet conveying systems. Finally, leading suppliers of palletisers, wrapping machines and automation systems provide high quality equipment and excellent support services to customers across the UK.

R&D TAX CREDIT CLAIMS

Will 2022 be the year you talk to an expert about an R&D Tax Credits Claim? At Cooden – R&D Tax Specialists, we were in somewhat celebratory mood as 2021 drew to a close. On 16 December we received the last payout of the year into our client account, it was for one of our newly acquired clients in 2021, a specialist veterinary care business based in Wales. This claim was momentous for Cooden as it saw our clients’ Research and Development tax savings top £5 million in a calendar year for the first time. 2021 has been a year of steady growth with a number of new significant businesses becoming clients. We’ve even taken on a Blue Chip Cyber Security business, with a number of claims for their UK-based entities. Our goal was to obtain 4 new clients who would have claims of over £75k, in the end we took on 6.

• If you are worried that we can’t handle large claims, our largest claim was for just under £700,000 for a scaling up Cyber-Security business and our next largest claim was over £575,000 for a technology company delivering banking solutions for Instant Payments.

It would appear as though our stress-free service offering has gone down very well with our customers. It consists of

• If you are worried, you’ll be wasting our time, you won’t, our smallest claim was for just under £1,500 for a start-up skincare business.

• a no-obligation discovery session to determine your eligibility prior to starting the claim; • a low-hassle data collection process for both the financial element and the technical element of claims; and • the use of our client account to receive funds and for visibility to chase HMRC when they haven’t been forthcoming. So, there really are few excuses left for you not to at least have an initial discussion with our Director, Simon Bulteel, but just in case you have any others: • If you are worried that it might not be worth it, our average claim value was just under £75,000;

• If you are worried that HMRC are going to punish you for making a claim, we’ve had one enquiry in 2021 into a Patent Box claim, where HMRC couldn’t find a patent in the name of the company. There really are no excuses left to stop you. We are here to guide you, just like we have over a 150 businesses before you, to a successful and rewarding R&D Tax Credits claim. With new changes coming in 2023, there has never been a better time to start claiming for your new product developments or improvements and with the ability to claim for two prior years, you could see a significant boost to your 2022 cashflow. ULMA PACKAGING UK SCALES UP PIONEERING PRODUCE SUPPLIER’S PLASTIC-FREE PACKAGING OPERATIONS

F

Fresh produce supplier Natoora has always placed sustainability at the forefront of its operations. So, when Natoora experienced growing demand from retail customers, the company required adaptable packaging machinery that could produce its new plasticfree produce packs at scale, without compromising its eco-conscious ethos. With this in mind, Natoora turned to ULMA Packaging UK to supply an innovative machinery solution so that the business could pack even more sustainable fruits and vegetables to stock shelves.

ounded in 2004 as the world’s first online farmer’s market, Natoora supplies directly sourced and seasonal produce to restaurants, retailers and straight to consumers through its own stores. The company aims to revolutionise the current food system and improve sustainability by building completely transparent supply chains from farm, to shelf, to plate. With business booming due to more awareness around the benefits of choosing

seasonal fruits and vegetables over intensively grown year-round produce, in 2019 the company decided to further expand its operations. At the same time as growing the business, it was important to Natoora that its produce should be packed using environmentally friendly materials. Key to this was developing plastic-free packaging. Natoora’s in-house team envisioned a fully recyclable, flow-wrapped punnet, featuring home compostable film from the Israeli flexible packaging provider TIPA. Unlike

24

traditional plastic flow-wrap, the TIPA material is certified as home compostable. However, identifying a packaging solution was only part of the challenge for Natoora. The company also needed to appropriately package the large quantities of punnets supplied to Natoora’s retail partners. It was therefore clear that investing in new and reliable packaging machinery was key to the business’s continued growth and advancement of its sustainability agenda.

ECO-CONSCIOUS OPERATIONS

Pioneering packaging To provide a solution to Natoora’s eco-conscious expansion brief, the search for a pioneering machinery packaging solution began. “We prioritise sustainability in all we do, so when developing a plastic-free packaging solution, we knew it was important to work within our retail partners’ frameworks,” says Jacopo Arpesani, Chief Operating Officer at Natoora. “We knew shoppers were drawn to the convenience of pre-packs, so a solution that could work at scale, eliminate plastic and work flawlessly within existing distribution systems was a must. “Yet in order to meaningfully change the way our customers would receive our produce both online and in-store, we needed machinery that could manufacture large volumes of our new, eco-friendly punnet. This new packaging solution would be key to meeting the growing demand for our produce, so ensuring it was compatible with the compostable TIPA film was also vital.” Natoora approached a number of packaging machinery suppliers to identify a solution appropriate to their needs, for their facility in Bermondsey, London. Specifically, any potential machine would need to address the complex logistics around moving and protecting incredibly ripe, seasonal produce supplied to Natoora’s retail partners. With the exception of hardy storage crops, such as onions and potatoes, softer produce needs more defence against product bruising. As such, the need for a scalable solution that could provide added, compostable packaging for more protection was paramount to avoid vast quantities of food going to waste. Furthermore, smaller items offered by Natoora that usually come in bunches, such as grapes or datterini tomatoes, required sealed packaging to avoid getting lost in transit.

ULMA Packaging UK ULMA Packaging UK stood out as the most capable and understanding of Natoora’s discerning environmental standards and priorities, while offering an extremely high level of service befitting their outstanding reputation as a packaging machinery provider to the produce sector. Particularly, the company was very impressed with ULMA’s commitment to developing a bespoke solution that could use the TIPA material. “Alongside equipment that was first class in terms of reliability and design, we wanted a supplier we could use as a consultant on how best to package and present products to the consumer,” explains Jacopo.“ With these aims in mind, ULMA really appealed to us – their team was friendly, approachable, knowledgeable, and, most of all, they cared about our business. They were very likeminded in their focus on sustainability, which was obviously very important to us.” Now tasked with providing an efficient, adaptable packaging machine suited to Natoora’s needs, ULMA carried out a detailed specification process, which considered the size and dimensions of the new punnet, and the fruit and vegetable produce it would contain. The ULMA team also visited Natoora’s facility to better gauge how the machinery would fit into the produce supplier’s existing production line and site processes, and ran trials with the TIPA material to ensure its viability. Following this important step, ULMA recommended the SIENNA Horizontal Flow Wrapper (HFFS). Ideally suited to flow-wrap irregularly shaped products such as fresh produce, the SIENNA is a highly flexible and reliable solution for the food industry. Its versatility means it is also compatible with various different materials, making it suitable to an extensive range of company needs

and packaging applications. Following the extensive research and development carried out on this project, this now includes the compostable film provided by TIPA. Sustainability in mind “The SIENNA is a very robust and adaptable machine that is extremely well-suited to packaging Natoora’s produce,” says Ed Williams, Sales Director at ULMA Packaging UK. “These characteristics have allowed the machine to slot seamlessly into the company’s operations and help meet ever-growing product demand from its retail partners. “Because of the SIENNA, Natoora can expand its commitment to a plastic-free future, enjoying peace-of-mind that more fully biodegradable packaging solutions will be put on shelves without sustainability being compromised. More so than ever, customers expect suppliers to reduce plastic while maintaining product quality, and our work with Natoora is a perfect example of how this can be done at scale. “Sustainable innovations such as those offered by Natoora and through our #ULMAweCare project are vital to reducing packaging and increasing the use of recyclable and biodegradable materials. To that end, we were incredibly pleased to work with Natoora, who share our ethos for embracing alternative machinery packaging solutions.” Profound effect ULMA’s packaging machinery is already having a profound effect on Natoora and its mission to transform how fresh produce is packed, moved and distributed through supply chains. Because of their ability to provide compostable packaging on a larger scale, the company are removing a staggering 2.2 million plastic pre-packs a year. “Our mission is to revolutionise the food system from start to finish, and ULMA are definitely helping us achieve this aim,” says Jacopo. “This would not have been possible without the SIENNA flow-wrapper, which has taken us to the next level as far as providing plastic-free packaging is concerned. “ULMA’s assistance throughout the specification and installation process has been nothing short of exceptional. They are very switched on to challenges facing the environment, and like us are passionate about leading the way in developing sustainable packaging solutions of the future.” For more information about ULMA Packaging UK’s SIENNA flow pack wrapper, visit https://www. ulmapackaging.com/en/packagingmachines/flow-pack-hffs/sienna

Mercedes-Benz Dealer Intercounty Truck & Van has been rewarded for its confidence and foresight in commissioning refrigerated conversions to vehicles that can then be sold from stock at short notice, with a breakthrough order from an award-winning foodservice business.

Intercounty’s Truck & Van’s ready-to-roll refrigerated Mercedes-Benz Sprinters are a cut above for Joseph & Henry

J

oseph & Henry’s four new Sprinters offer impressive carrying capacities and are the subject of contract hire agreements with its established partner, the commercial vehicle finance broker Balgores Leasing. The operator is a trading arm of JC Rook & Sons, which has been serving customers in Kent for more than 55 years. JC Rook & Sons has 11 butcher’s shops across the county and a Food Standards Agency-approved production and distribution facility in Ramsgate, where it makes pies, sausages and suet puddings. Joseph & Henry specialises in supplying trade customers, including restaurants, schools, hotels and pub chains. Between them, the two brands run more than 15 vans – the latest additions to the fleet are the first to wear three-pointed stars.

All are medium length L2 high-roofed H2 Sprinter 315 CDI variants with 3.5-tonne gross weights. The insulated, singlecompartment chiller conversions were undertaken by GRP Group, in Leeds, which also fitted GAH Rapier RC301 refrigeration units with single-phase electric standby. Deletion of the passenger seat and spare wheel contributes to the vehicle’s 1,040 kg payload allowance. Joseph & Henry acquired the Sprinters to support its continued expansion into Sussex; they are now operating from a new distribution centre in Shoreham. Flagship customers include Brighton’s iconic Grand Hotel, which receives deliveries six days a week of raw and cooked meats, plant-based food solutions and complementary products. Director Adrian Burr explained: “The Grand is one of our largest and most prestigious

26

customers in Sussex, and the association continues to help us win significant incremental business from local companies and organisations. The fact that we are able to meet the demands of highly regarded clients reflects the quality of the products and service we offer.” Mr Burr said that despite the challenging trading conditions resulting from successive Covid lockdowns, Joseph & Henry had remained focused on growth. “We have recruited 22 full time staff in Shoreham since the lifting of restrictions last May. It was a high-risk strategy to add another depot mid-pandemic, but it has paid off by helping us to achieve a four-fold growth in turnover this year alone.” Joseph & Henry switched to Mercedes-Benz on the advice of Balgores Leasing. “Availability was key,” recalled Adrian Burr. “We needed

extra vans quickly and the pre-converted Sprinters were available from Intercounty Truck & Van at short notice. We took three initially, and added a fourth a little while later. “It wasn’t only about the delivery timetable, though,” he said. “The historic association with the van manufacturer that dominates the shared JC Rook & Sons and Joseph & Henry fleet predates my own involvement. For my part, though, there was a strong appeal to the Mercedes-Benz product, given its premium positioning and the Sprinter’s unrivalled reputation for reliability and safety. This was a view shared by members of our delivery team. “The Mercedes-Benz star is synonymous with quality and engineering excellence, and that’s an association that can only complement our own brand image. Customer feedback is certainly very positive, so we are now considering another two Sprinters to support our continued expansion.”

Customer feedback is certainly very positive, so we are now considering another two Sprinters to support our continued expansion.” Intercounty Truck & Van operates from headquarters in Wellingborough and other branches in Boston, Milton Keynes,

Peterborough and Toddington. Mr Burr added: “The fact that we sourced the vans through Balgores Leasing meant we hadn’t engaged directly with the Dealer. We were really pleased, therefore, when Intercounty’s Regional Fleet Sales Manager James Holmes came down to Shoreham to give us a personal introduction to, and overview of, the new vans. That wasn’t a service we were expecting, but it was very much appreciated.” Joseph & Henry’s Sprinters employ the 150 hp/340 Nm version of Mercedes-Benz Vans’ latest 2.0-litre engine; the same four-cylinder unit is also available in 170 hp/380 Nm and 190 hp/450 Nm trim. Like all new Mercedes-Benz vans, they came with three-year unlimited mileage warranties, and MobiloVan cover, which includes free, round-the-clock emergency roadside assistance, 365 days a year. One such system, AutoAlign - recently launched in the UK, following a £2m/24-month development project and part funded by UK’s Clean Air Programme - is a dynamic and unique real time vehicle monitoring module designed to combat the problem of wheel misalignment. This condition says RL Automotive is unknowingly suffered by a third of all commercial vehicles and around half of all cars and vans in the UK.

n fact, during the development of AutoAlign, industry research gathered by RL Automotive concludes that on UK roads today, there are 18.7 million vehicles operating with incorrect wheel alignment – a potentially dangerous and costly condition which can go undetected for months. Currently, wheel alignment inspection is not part of scheduled maintenance or MOT tests, however misalignment results in excessive fuel costs and uneven tyre tread abrasion which

in turn can lead to tyre failure, accidents and excessive particulate emissions – a major environmental threat, as identified by the World Health Organisation. AutoAlign is a low-cost solution consisting of sensors fitted to the steering axle to detect wheel mis alignment as soon as it occurs. Therefore, early corrective action will greatly reduce carbon output and keep PM 10 and PM 2.5 tyre particulate emissions to a minimum.” AutoAlign is currently undergoing field trials with several strategic industrial fleet partners and is scheduled for release during the first quarter of 2022.

The importance of logistics to the economy

Logistics directly contributes to economic activity through investment in warehousing, road, rail, sea, and air transport. It also creates many excellent jobs, providing skilled careers for thousands. According to business group Logistics UK, all economic activity depends on the existence and efficiency of logistics.

E

xperts in this sector are therefore fundamental to economic growth by providing reliable and dedicated logistics, storage, warehousing, and distribution solutions. Time Critical transport and logistics solutions can be provided to customers all over the world, supporting a multitude of industry sectors. A choice of transportation methods is available to suit varying budgets and timelines. Skills Report and looking to the future Much has been made in the past year of the shortage of HGV drivers and other logistics workers. But after a challenging 12 months for the sector, a recent report published by Logistics UK shows there is cause for cautious optimism that the situation will improve. The Logistics UK Skills Report 2021, compiled in partnership with independent research agency Repgraph, reveals that significant steps have been taken to help address the recruitment issues which have plagued the sector for years, with government and industry working together to increase

capacity to test new drivers, provide new training schemes, and commit to improving facilities available to those working across the roads network. But as Elizabeth de Jong, policy director at Logistics UK explains, while there has been progress, there is still much work to do:

Logistics UK is one of the UK’s leading business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling, and moving of goods. “The flexibility and resilience of our sector in coping with a smaller workforce, coupled with issues caused by Brexit and supply chain disruption caused by worldwide container shipping issues, have been incredible,” she says, “and with higher wages now helping to plug the gaps in employment for companies which can afford them and an increase in HGV driver

tests of 25.6% and three-fold increase in applications for vocational provisional licences, there is hope that the shortage of HGV drivers will ease. “Government announcements to help address issues across our sector, including increasing driver testing throughput, funding Skills Bootcamps to train HGV drivers and a commitment to improved overnight parking provision, have been at pace. There needs to be continued focus from government to ensure they are delivered, so business and industry can take full advantage and continue to raise awareness of logistics and the opportunities it offers.” Logistics UK is one of the UK’s leading business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling, and moving of goods. With COVID-19, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc.

Do you know that when looking for a supplier of warehousing and distribution, that the logistics business you select and partner with, should be accredited to the highest possible Standard; and that Standard is BRCGS ‘AA’ for Storage and Distribution - that’s AMCO’s Standard!

Highest Possible Standard

Why would you trust your food, packaging materials or consumer finished goods to any logistics business that cannot prove they operate to the highest possible accreditation? Are your logistics partners all certified? Do they have certification on their vehicles? Are they using 3rd party transport? Is their warehousing certified? Can they handle any customs clearance you may need? Can they offer you a single European destination for export and then free European distribution? Are they financially robust? All important questions to ask when reviewing your supply chain and seeking new partners for your transport and warehousing. This Standard in the supply chain should be a fundamental requirement for retailers, manufacturers, and food service organisations. AMCO with its ‘AA’ Standard offer total assurance for your product safety, quality, integrity, and legality when it comes to storage and distribution. That is why leading manufacturers and some of the largest food companies in the world trust AMCO.

In safe hands

AMCO exceed the grade for food safety for a range of products including packaging materials,

consumer products, general merchandise, personal care and household goods. The Standard AMCO operate to, allows the supply chain of product certification to be completed. In the case of food, from grower and processer to the manufacturer and then from manufacturer to retailer. The Standard is designed to reflect best practice and facilitate a process of continuous improvement through risk-based product safety management systems. Many parts of the food and drink supply chain is burdened with risk. Today’s logistics demand intense professional operations that do so much more than just moving goods from A to B. The need for time-critical transport is often top of the list along with food safety. Having BRCGS Accreditation means AMCO can ensure the quality and safety of products during their storage and distribution throughout the supply chain. What about warehousing for food and drink? AMCO’s flagship Distribution Centre, AMCO Park is a BRCGS certified site for food, packaging, and consumer products, and its owned transport fleet is certified to carry food, packaging materials and consumer products to the standards laid down for health, safety and hygiene. 38 years of logistics experience means knowledgeable people. Knowledge of customs clearances and bonded facilities; knowledge of European Distribution and more. AMCO offer shipping and freight forwarding, have distribution in Dunkirk, Poland and Hungary, and operate their own fleet.

A view from the top We asked Don Mucci, AMCO’s Managing Director what his thoughts are on today’s supply chain for the Food and Beverage sector. “AMCO have many years’ expertise in retail distribution and storage, with customers from a number of sectors. We know our current and future customers want to know they are dealing with a business that has processes to a very high standard and that they can have confidence in their storage and distribution provider. Today, visibility and transparency in any supply chain is deemed critical, especially when supply chains are more complicated than ever. Being adaptable and forward-thinking in terms of mitigating supply chain disruptions such as the pandemic, shows organisational maturity. Our use of road freight down the Silk Road is a good example of this, and we are confident in our ability to deliver.” Trust AMCO for supply chain safety and integrity in the food and drink storage and distribution sector.

BREXIT - A YEAR ON

INDUSTRY INSIGHT | 2022

Astrid Geeraerts, Head of Investment at FIT

BREXIT – A YEAR ON –

HOW ARE UK COMPANIES MANAGING? 2022 marks one year since the end of the Brexit transition period. Flanders Trade & Investment (FIT) has been at the frontline helping UK companies navigate the new rules and enter the EU. What have been the challenges for UK companies trying to export and invest in the EU? How are UK companies overcoming them?

T

he changes introduced a year ago were numerous and varied between sectors, but the key ones were new requirements for customs documentation and declaration, changes to transport, logistics and fulfilment (which have caused the infamous delays), changes to product certification requirements and changes to duty and eligibility for preferential rates. Flanders Investment & Trade advises that the numerous UK companies they speak to have adapted to the changes in different ways to suit them. Most businesses have found the new customs controls a huge burden when the change first happened but are now adapting and have got used to them. Some are paying experts for help which, due to heavy demand, can be expensive, or they’re just paying the customs duty and increasing prices for customers. Astrid Geeraerts, Head of Investment at FIT advised; “One issue, that has become clear, is that each of the EU member states manages the new rules slightly differently. This has made it difficult for a company to export to different states. We advise companies to enter the

EU only once and then export from that country.” Last month FIT announced that they had attracted over £2bn in investment projects to the region from UK based businesses, following Brexit, as a result of this strategy. UK and other international companies are now using Flanders as a base for entering the EU. FIT reports that the delivery delays had started to ease but the busy Christmas period may cause a back log again. Companies are handling this by ensuring that that they manage expectations with their customers. FIT reports that the pandemic and Brexit has caused many to abandon the ‘Just in Time’ mantra. Instead, companies are encouraging their customers to order in advance and maintain good stocks so that delays have less impact. Taxes and duties have added to costs so many companies have had to review their pricing. In some cases, this has made companies uncompetitive with the EU, so they’ve had to find ways to bring their unit costs down and offer reductions for bulk orders.

32

Astrid Geeraerts concludes; “Much of the early disruption, caused by Brexit, has settled but I know that many companies continue to struggle, and some have abandoned even trying to trade with the EU. It’s important that UK companies know that many EU countries and regions, including Flanders, are very keen to maintain a trading relationship with the UK. It remains one of our key markets, so we’ve been very active over the year helping UK companies negotiate Brexit, and we don’t charge for that help.” FIT has advice for UK companies on their website (www.flandersinvestmentand trade.com/uk). This includes a Brexit impact scan service, which provides companies with a calculation of customs duties and additional costs for customs declarations, as well as an interactive report with possible Brexit strategies.
