Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce President

Welcome to 2022! Let’s hope that this year is a better one for all of us!

or many, 2021 was a tough year, which we can now start to put behind us and move into 2022 with renewed purpose and vigour.

Many businesses have struggled with increasing raw material prices and this is having a knockon effect across the whole of the economy. The Covid-19 pandemic has hung over us like a dull fog, while shipping delays and transportation costs have also been issues which have caused many problems for Chamber members and Humber businesses, yet, even in the face of all of these challenges, you have all been able to survive and move forward., which puts you in a good place for 2022.

The Bank of England announced an increase in interest rates in December last year in response to rising inflation and seems to be forward signalling more of the same in the year ahead. With inflation hitting an annualised 5.1% in November, we are facing a new landscape, where debt can be eroded more quickly.

The Humber region remains a great place to do business, there will be increased prosperity in the years ahead. With the Freeport programme, rapid expansion of Junction 36 at Goole and the push towards sustainable energy across the estuary, improvements in connectivity and a co-ordinated programme of skills and training designed to meet the needs of employers.

The Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce is right at the centre of business in the estuary and will lead the way on all fronts. As a member you are part of the team, benefiting from the services that we offer and I would encourage you to make time this year to attend some of the great events that we run.

The Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce is right at the centre of business in the estuary and will lead the way on all fronts. As a member you are part of the team, benefiting from the services that we offer and I would encourage you to make time this year to attend some of the great events that we run.

Whether it is one of the Business Award Ceremonies, or one of our face-to-face networking events, we would love to see you there and learn more about your business. These events are where you will have the opportunity to talk openly and learn what other members are doing in their businesses in the face of all the challenges that undoubtedly lay ahead.

Good luck for 2022 and remember, we are here for you.

Chamber membership now includes five new advice lines –HR, Legal, H&S, tax and VAT

Three document libraries – HR, H&S and Legal –almost 800 template documents plus lots more information and support

MANY Humber businesses have had to adapt to living and working with Covid-19 as the pandemic rumbles on into 2022, be that reshaping the company, or adopting hybrid working practices with staff being based at home, rather than in the office.

These and many other challenges can require expert advice and guidance, and the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce was quick to recognise this and invest in its membership offer to provide even better support for its membership.

It has recently introduced four important new services which are now included as part of the Chamber membership package.

Chamber HR, Chamber H&S, Chamber Legal and Chamber Tax are all now available to members and are free to use as often as they like. Members also have unlimited access to a huge library of around 800 downloadable documents and templates covering employment, health and safety, tax and legal matters.

All the new services can be accessed by one phone number which gives members immediate advice and support via five advice lines – HR, H&S, Legal, Tax and VAT

Chamber Legal provides unlimited access to experienced legal advisors and a library of documents, while Chamber Tax provides access to tax and VAT advisors who can be a great help at tax return time!

FOUR SERVICES FOR YOUR PROTECTION AND PEACE OF MIND

These new services represent a major investment by the Chamber in its membership offer and are part of a national scheme provided by Quest with 45,000 UK Chamber of Commerce users.

DAVID HOOPER External Affairs and Membership Director

External Affairs and Membership Director, David Hooper, said: “Businesses are facing challenging times and these new services offer excellent support to all businesses, whatever size they may be. I believe these new services will protect our members, help them stay compliant, particularly with issues around Covid-19 like HR and H&S requirements, and give them peace of mind.

“These services are employer focused, so the HR line for example, can help businesses deal with redundancy procedures, appraisals or disciplinary procedures and comes with access to experienced advisors for hand-holding support when they need it, or provide access to documents which are regularly updated to reflect the latest rules and regulations.

“The Health and Safety package offers unlimited advice and access to documents like H&S policies, risk assessment templates and the offer of free One2One reviews.

“Chamber Legal provides unlimited access to experienced legal advisors and a library of documents, while Chamber Tax provides access to tax and VAT advisors who can be a great help at tax return time!

Chamber Chief Executive, Dr Ian Kelly, said: “We are delighted to be able to include these excellent new benefits as part of our membership package. They provide expert advice and support on many key aspects of running a business and I would encourage our members to make good use of these new, premium services.”

Members only can call 01455 852037 for immediate support and assistance.

The Humber set for another record-breaking year in renewable energy

2022 is already set to be a record-breaking year in renewable energy for the Humber region as Ørsted’s Hornsea Two offshore wind farm is set for completion.

At the end of 2021, the first clean electricity was generated at Hornsea Two, located around 89km off the Humber coast.

When fully operational this year, Hornsea Two’s 165 8MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbines will be capable of generating 1.32GW of clean electricity – taking the title of “world’s largest operating offshore wind farm” from its sister project Hornsea One. Together, the two projects will be capable of providing enough power for well over 2.3 million homes.

First power on Hornsea Two was achieved

after its offshore substation (OSS), the world’s largest offshore AC substation, and reactive compensation station (RCS), were installed in late October 2021. Since that time, Ørsted and its partner companies have been working hard to commission and energise the wind farm in preparation for its anticipated operational date next year.

When complete, power will be transferred from the 165 wind turbines via 373km of array cables to the OSS and RCS, reaching the National Grid via 390km of offshore and 40km of onshore export cables which terminate at the onshore substation in Killingholme.

A further two projects in the Hornsea Zone are also underway, with Hornsea Three receiving a Development Consent Order in December 2020 and Hornsea Four currently going through the planning process. Collectively, the projects would make a significant contribution to the UK Government’s target of achieving net zero by 2050.

Patrick Harnett, Programme Director for Hornsea Two, said: “Achieving first power is an important milestone for the project and a proud moment for the whole team. Constructing a project of this size and scale is only possible through strong collaboration, hard work and

04 RENEWABLES HUMBERGUIDES.CO.UK
“The UK is the global leader in offshore wind and our Hornsea projects have helped pave the way for the next generation of offshore wind farms.”

dedication. From here, we have the finish line in sight as we install the remaining turbines and continue testing, commissioning and energising our wind farm into the New Year. A huge well done to everyone who has worked through the pandemic to keep the project on track.”

Duncan Clark, Head of Region UK at Ørsted, said: “Climate change is one of the biggest threats facing the world today, and we believe that the solution lies in deploying renewable energy resources on a much larger scale than

anything we have seen so far. The UK is the global leader in offshore wind and our Hornsea projects have helped pave the way for the next generation of offshore wind farms. Reaching this milestone on Hornsea Two is testament to the incredible skill and commitment of everyone involved.”

This year will also see further funding awarded to local projects, community groups and charities through Ørsted’s East Coast Community Fund. Set up in 2016 as part of the

community engagement programme from the Hornsea and Race bank offshore wind farms, the fund smashed through the £2 million barrier last year.

So far, more than 145 local organisations have benefitted from the fund and, with two further application rounds opening in 2022, many more will receive support over the year.

In total, over the twenty years, up to £9.3 million will be made available for community and environmental projects in coastal areas of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and North Norfolk. Funding is available each year, until 2037, approximately £390,000 will be available from the main fund to support a wide range of community and environmental projects.

An additional £75,000 per year is ring-fenced for a skills fund, designed to support a range of educational and training initiatives.

Ørsted is the global leader in offshore wind, with 30 years’ experience designing, constructing and operating 27 operational wind farms worldwide, with a further two under construction and a total of 7.6GW of constructed offshore wind capacity.

ASSOCIATED BRITISH PORTS WELCOMES NEW £1 MILLION STATE - OF - THE - ART PILOT LAUNCH VESSEL TO THE HUMBER

Associated British Ports (ABP) has welcomed the first of five new pilot launch vessels to the UK’s busiest trading estuary, the Humber.

Earlier this year ABP announced an investment of around £9 million to build nine new pilot launch vessels. ABP Humber will be receiving five vessels in total. Three vessels will be heading to ABP Southampton in 2022 and one to ABP South Wales in 2023.

The first vessel received a warm welcome at the Port of Grimsby last week. Named the OUSE, the vessel boasts improved fuel efficiency, helping to reduce emissions, a vital step towards tackling climate change.

Simon Bird, ABP Humber Regional Director, said:

“It is an exciting time for ABP to receive the first of its new pilot launches. The pilotage service ABP provides on the Humber is key to keeping Britain trading, and ongoing investment in new technology and equipment ensures the service can continue to be delivered to the highest standard, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

“All the new vessels arriving to the Humber will be named after some of the estuary’s main tributaries. The estuary itself is key to everything ABP achieves on the Humber, so it seemed appropriate to recognise the tributaries that keep the Humber flowing.”

On the Humber, vessels over 60 metres in length must be navigated through the Humber Estuary by an ABP Humber Pilot. For the pilots to reach the vessels coming into the estuary and back out again, they are transported to and from the ship by a pilot launch vessel.

ABP’s pilot launch vessels are operated by a launch crew, consisting of a coxswain who navigates the vessel, and deckhands, who maintain the vessel’s equipment on the deck and assist with many other pilotage operations such as mooring.

Earlier this year ABP Humber welcomed four new recruits to the pilot launch service. Alex Harvey, Jamie Rawson, Hollie Lewis and Linn Andersson joined ABP as pilot launch crew deckhands.

The new crew members brought with them a great deal of experience, including offshore lifeboat, armed forces, and international deckhand qualifications.

ABP Humber Deckhand, Hollie Lewis said: “The crew are looking forward to working on the new pilot launch vessels as they arrive in the Humber. Not only is the OUSE quieter and more

comfortable, it greatly benefits from modernised safety features. We are excited to see how the OUSE stands up to the Humber’s seasonal challenges, but we are in no doubt she will deliver everything we need her to when called upon.”

Norfolk-based Goodchild Marine Services, who are commissioned to build the new vessels, expect to complete all nine by 2025.

Stephen Pierce, General Manager Goodchild Marine Services Limited, said:

“Our aim is to deliver the highest quality pilot boats, which provide a safe, comfortable, reliable and efficient vessel. This ensures the best possible working space for the boat crews, pilots and the maintainers.”

ABP has continued to invest in the provision of its services, port-based infrastructure and equipment to support Britain’s postCOVID recovery. Many of these investments have centred around supporting shipping’s transition to zero-carbon. The fleet of fuel efficient pilot launch vessels is another step towards that ambition.

ABP INVESTS £8 MILLION IN BESPOKE WAREHOUSE FOR FRONTIER AGRICULTURE

Associated British Ports (ABP) is investing £8 million to build a bespoke warehouse for valued customer Frontier Agriculture, the latest in a series of recent major investments by ABP in the Humber, as the business continues to expand.

Crop production and grain marketing business Frontier Agriculture is keen to increase its port based storage facilities located at the Port of Hull.

The Humber Ports already play a major role in supporting the agricultural sector across the North and the Midlands.

As part of a new 12 year deal, ABP has commissioned a new 6,455m2 (internal) warehouse to accommodate Frontier’s growing business.

The warehouse will have a 40,386 tonne capacity, with an eight bay configuration and be used to store agricultural products, primarily grains, used in the manufacture of food.

For many years, supported by ABP’s stevedore service, Frontier has been exporting and importing wheat, barley, beans, rice and maize via the Port of Hull’s dry bulks Terminal. This new investment will help to grow those operations and will be a good boost to the local economy.

Simon Bird, Director at ABP Humber, said: “ABP has a longstanding relationship with Frontier Agriculture, who have been utilising the Humber ports for many years and it is great to be able to support their expansion.

This latest investment by ABP follows a number of others in the Humber in recent months in support of a range of sectors. Such investments are building confidence, and customers from across all sectors of the economy see the Humber Ports as a key link in their supply chain.”

Simon Christensen, Frontier Agriculture Grain Director, said:

“Our relationship with the Port of Hull enables us to access export markets for UK farmers’ surplus grains when market opportunities arise, and to import specialist grains that cannot easily be grown in the UK, for example, high quality milling wheats. The port has good transportation links which speed the movement of local farmers’ grain to export markets.

Meanwhile, cargo arriving at the Port can be moved to millers and food manufacturers efficiently.”

The new warehouse will be located near to the port’s East Gate entrance. I & H Brown Ltd are the appointed contractors working with ABP to complete the project by the end of January 2022.

Frontier Agriculture is the UK’s leading crop production and grain marketing business, recognised for its close customer relationships with farmers and grain consumers and its successful management of the arable supply chain.

Frontier was formed in 2005 as a joint venture between Associated British Foods plc and Cargill Inc. and now turns over around £1.5 billion per annum.

ABP SIGNS NEW 10 YEAR DEAL WITH AHLMARK SHIPPING ( UK ) LTD

Ahlmark Shipping (UK) LTD has signed a new 10 year deal with Associated British Ports (ABP). The new 10 year deal demonstrates that the timber market remains resilient.

Ahlmark Shipping has a dedicated terminal at the Port of Hull where they offer stevedoring, warehousing, ships agency and Customs Clearance services.

Ahlmark Lines was one of the first shipping lines to move Swedish timber through Hull and has been regularly calling at the port for almost 40 years, helping to make Hull one of the largest UK ports for sawn timber imports. Ahlmark’s fleet sees the company ship 30% of Swedish timber to the UK.

Simon Bird, Director at ABP Humber, said:

“This new deal with Ahlmark highlights that ABP remains a valuable and trusted partner for timber imports and exports in the Humber.

The Humber Ports afford many businesses an opportunity for growth, and ABP is committed to investing in its services and infrastructure to aid that.”

Tim Hollands, Managing Director at Ahlmark Shipping (UK) Ltd, said:

“This agreement highlights the continued commitment to the timber industry and to the Port of Hull by Ahlmark Lines A.-B., a longterm relationship that now includes regular liner services to the ABP East Coast Ports of Immingham, Grimsby and Kings Lynn. With the support of ABP, Ahlmark Shipping (UK) Ltd is in a strong position to develop business through the Hull terminal, directly handling volumes on weekly sailings from Kristinehamn, fortnightly sailings from East Coast ports of Skelleftehamn and Iggesund; and monthly services from

Domsjo, Gruvon and Ala.

Ahlmark have also taken on an additional land to support their services in Hull as the business goes from strength to strength.

PORT OF HULL WELCOMES ITS FIRST CRUISE VESSEL IN 2021

The ISLAND SKY was welcomed into Associated British Port’s (ABP) King George Dock last week. The Port of Hull has welcomed many cruise vessels over the years, but this was the first since the start of the COVID pandemic and something to behold in the dock so often frequented by general cargo vessels.

The vessel, operated by Noble Caledonia, boasts 57 spacious luxury cabins, conveying the atmosphere of a private yacht amongst its guests. Accommodation is arranged over five decks and all suites have outside views.

ABP Humber Regional Director, Simon Bird, said: The calling cruise stopped at the Port of Hull on the way to ABP’s Port of Ipswich, as part of a

tour around the UK that started in Portsmouth. Guests were provided with the opportunity through operator Noble Caledonia to enjoy a trip to the historic and beautiful market town of Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Noble Caledonia Head of Fleet Operations, Mike Deegan, said:

“We were delighted to be able to include Hull on this itinerary, a call which we made using our Covid-secure protocols to ensure the safety of our guests, crew and local communities. The area has much to offer and our guests were amazed at the picturesque nature of Beverley”. Elsewhere in the ABP Group, the Port of Southampton’s newest cruise terminal was officially opened by the Maritime Minister during London International Shipping Week.

Robert Courts MP officially opened the £55 million next-generation Horizon Cruise Terminal, at an event to celebrate the Port of Southampton’s

significant investment in the future of cruise.

Hull is one of several ABP ports handling cruise calls, including Ayr, Barrow, Cardiff, Ipswich, Lowestoft, Newport, Plymouth, Southampton, Swansea, Teignmouth, and Troon. For more details visit - www.abports.co.uk.

CURLEW FLOCK TO NEW ABP MITIGATION SITE IN GRIMSBY

Curlews, a species of wading bird, which has become one of the UK’s most important conservation priorities, have been making good use of mitigation land created by Associated British Ports (ABP) in Grimsby.

The Curlew breeding population has been declining in the UK for many years. Globally their breeding ground productivity has also been in decline, meaning their IUCN Red List status, a critical indicator of the health of the world’s biodiversity, is ‘near threatened’. The decline is thought to be a result of breeding habitat loss, predation, climate change, and a combination of these issues.

The five hectare site was completed last summer. It was required as part of the planning permission for the Grimsby Automotive Terminal, which is on the site of the former Huntsman Tioxide factory works.

Ecologists have reported excellent numbers of wading birds using the site. On a recent count, 225 Curlews, 153 Redshanks and 13 Dunlins were recorded. The area provides many benefits to waders, which feed on invertebrates within the mud and roost during high water periods, reducing the need to fly longer distances, saving valuable energy.

Ecologist, Richard Baines, from Wold Ecology, who has been monitoring the site said: “ABP’s investment in this expertly designed scheme,

has certainly paid off, with an impressive result of wading birds using the area to feed and roost within.

Habitat creation of this kind does yield quick results for waders, and in this instance was aided by the historical use of the area by wading birds.”

ABP Humber Director, Simon Bird, said: “ABP is committed to ensure that its port related activities and developments are carefully considered.

It is pleasing to hear that the mitigation area is working as we expected, attracting many species of wading birds that use the Humber Estuary. We look forward to seeing the area go from strength to strength.”

The welcome news of Grimsby’s mitigation site comes as work

on a joint venture by the Environment Agency and Associated British Ports, is set to begin this spring on the north bank of the Humber. The ‘Outstrays to Skeffling Managed Realignment Scheme’ will improve flood protection, create 175 hectares of intertidal habitat, and 75 hectares of wet grassland habitat.

In 2021 Sewell Group was also recognised as one of only 18 businesses across the country in the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise for Promoting Opportunity – the most prestigious accolade for UK businesses.

In recent years, Sewell has been involved in major developments in East Hull including the Preston Road Community Centre, Sutton Village, Dove House Hospice, various health centres and schools.

Chair of Sewell Group, Paul Sewell, said: “We see this partnership as another great way of giving back to the community which we’ve

been part of since 1876. We know the fantastic work Hull KR do to support and improve the health and wellbeing of the community. We’re delighted to be able to support this, and the club, in their journey on the eve of their 140th anniversary.

“The heart of our business strategy has always been to deliver value for the communities we serve, creating opportunities for people, supporting communities, charity groups and pioneering initiatives to support people who need it. This partnership will allow us to continue to do that, alongside the many other initiatives we support across the region.”

Hull KR Chief Executive Paul Lakin said: “We are delighted to welcome Sewell Group as our stadium naming rights partner. They are one of Hull’s biggest employers with an outstanding reputation. This partnership holds true to their East Hull roots and we are very grateful for their support.

“We also look forward to supporting and enhancing the work Sewell Group do in the local community, whilst providing a platform for their Sewell on the go brand within the stadium bowl to promote their 13 convenience stores across the region.”

Keeping the UK trading

Logistics directly contributes to economic activity through investment in warehousing, road, rail, sea and air transport. According to Logistics UK, it also creates many jobs, providing skilled careers for thousands.

Logistics UK (formerly FTA) is one of the UK’s leading business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With COVID-19, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc.

According to the Logistics Report 2021 from Logistics UK, logistics businesses have shown impressive resilience throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, adapting their operations swiftly and efficiently in the face of extreme pressures to keep the nation stocked with the goods and services it needs.

A recent study from Valuates Reports also states that the freight forwarding sector is an integral 3PL services segment which is expanding, primarily due to the growth of e-commerce and trade activities. The main factors driving the growth of the freight forwarding market are the increasing demand for low-cost shipping, the ability to recognise consumer needs, and a rapid response with reliable and efficient logistics solutions. Furthermore, the growing demand for integrated services is also expected to fuel market growth.

With COVID-19, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc.

Other developments influencing the market include increasing trade agreements between nations and the growing demand for the transport of a wide range of goods and commodities across the world.

With the growth of global retail trade, maritime trade has been gradually increasing, driving the sea freight forwarding market. The containerised cargo trade is expected to expand faster, with multimodal transport becoming increasingly common.

Today’s leading freight forwarding, transport and logistics companies can therefore offer a broad selection of reliable solutions for rail, air, road and sea freight, as well as hazardous goods shipping. Additional services include customs clearance, warehousing and Brexit support.

Experienced team of people, both in the office and the warehouse, can help you to develop your business in every direction. Close proximity to the twin ports of Grimsby & Immingham, which are by tonnage handled the UK’s busiest ports. Immingham has extensive daily lolo and roro freight services to Northern Europe, Scandinavia & Baltic regions. INSPIRING A FUTURE GENERATION OF ENGINEERS

A continued investment in training is paving the way for the future success of Grayton Ltd in 2022 and beyond. The Management Team believe that the training of young people will help to tackle the UK’s engineering skills shortage, as well as inspiring a future generation of engineers.

Carl Meale, Engineering Director at Grayton Ltd, comments: “Throughout 2022, we will continue to invest in apprenticeship training, with plans to take on three or four additional apprentices this year. We continue to sponsor a mechanical apprentice through his first year of off-site training at the CATCH facility in Stallingborough. He will be returning to Grayton in the middle of 2022 to begin his on-site training with us.

“We are dedicated to supporting young people in the Humber region with their career aspirations, as well as advocating the continued growth of the engineering sector. We are actively looking at further opportunities for the future.”

A commitment to training spans the entire business and, as well as apprenticeship training, Grayton will continue to upskill the existing workforce by pairing semi-skilled workers with more experienced tradesmen. There will also be further opportunities for students from local schools and colleges to undertake work experience at the company to discover more about engineering, including key skills such

as welding and pipe fitting, as well as finding out more about how an engineering business operates.

Always a forward-thinking business, the Grayton Management Team have produced a three-year plan which focuses on the future development of the company. At the start of 2022, Grayton opened an additional facility in Barton upon Humber, specifically for the fabrication and testing of pipework. This has allowed the company to expand its business significantly, therefore supporting continued growth in the pipework division. Considerable investments have been made in key personnel & specialist plant to support the pipework team.

From its Head Office in Barton upon Humber, Grayton is centrally located to serve a wide customer base throughout the whole of the UK and into Europe. The company provides a complete Engineered Solution including Design; Fabrication; Installation and Commissioning, assisting blue-chip clients to resolve difficulties seen when maintaining or modifying existing equipment.

Engineering technician teaching Grayton’s upskilling mechanical fitter how to scrape in a 1.8m dia white metal bearing Breedon engaged Grayton early in the project due to restrictions on a difficult lifting job Installation of kiln sections Fabricated, tested and installed by the pipework division

Mechanically, Grayton is well established within the heavy rotating equipment industry such as Kilns, Mills and Dryers, with expertise in installation of girth gears, full drive systems, support rollers, conveyors, pumps, and fans. The company also offers Design, Fabrication, and Installation of pipework systems (from small bore to large 1.3m diameter gas mains), structural steelwork, from small platforms to full structures.

Grayton offers a turnkey solution to a wide range of engineering challenges, and the company takes great pride in being flexible to support its clients as and when required. One of Grayton’s primary objectives is to support the companies that build Britain; some of our key clients include Hanson, Tarmac, Breedon, Lafarge, P66, NICHE, British Steel and Singleton Birch.

At the end of 2021, Grayton was successful in winning a £1 million contract with British Steel in Scunthorpe to design, fabricate and install large diameter pipework.

A prestigious local project is also underway, with Grayton working on the design, build and install of a new 8 story building, engineering components and pipework system. This major project will take around six months to complete, with the team from Grayton collaborating closely with their client.

Today, Grayton Ltd employs a skilled workforce of around 100, plus office staff and the Management Team. 2022 will see the business celebrating its 30th anniversary and there are plans for continued development. Investment in the skills needed to progress the engineering sector is a top priority, as well as supporting the training and career aspirations of young people in the Humber region.

Mechanical engineering is a key part of Grayton’s business, and Engineering Director, Carl Meale recently attended an Accelerator Training Programme, in conjunction with the University of Lincoln where he was successful in gaining full grant funding through the Seed

Fund Accelerator Programme. The grant was awarded to Grayton to enable the company to invest in mechanical equipment and various technologies to assist with alignment of rotating equipment, from small couplings to large girth gears. This funding for the business was gratefully received and hugely advantageous in helping the business to progress. Further investments in mechanical equipment are planned for 2022.

The team at Grayton are therefore looking to the future with confidence. 2022 is set to be another positive and successful year for the company, with several significant projects ongoing and new projects set to begin, with an ever-expanding client base located throughout the UK and into Europe.

Training and investment opportunities will continue to ensure that Grayton is at the forefront of the engineering sector, with the company dedicated to supporting the companies that build Britain.

Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) is going through the planning process now for the centre at Stallingborough, a project costing more than £4m which will replace its existing operation at CATCH with the modern learning environments already in place at sites in Hull and Scunthorpe.

Joanne Lawson, Deputy Chief Executive of HETA, said: “This is a significant investment for us and it is all about meeting the rising demand from employers across North and North East Lincolnshire for qualified young people and for tuition to upskill the existing workforce.

“In 2021 we received more than 800 applications for the 200 apprenticeships available at our three sites. We recently began recruitment for our 2022 cohort and we are again experiencing high levels of interest for apprenticeships and for Higher National qualifications.

“People are applying earlier because they don’t want to miss out and we expect that trend to continue – the new facility at Stallingborough will give us much greater capacity when it opens in August 2023 but we can be sure that demand will increase

further as more businesses move into the area.”

With a floor area of 3,300 square metres, the new, two-storey centre will form a key part of North East Lincolnshire Council’s South Humber Industrial Investment Programme (SHIIP) project.

Facilities will include workshops which will enable individual training in fabrication and welding, machining, electrical and mechanical engineering. There will be a lecture theatre for up to 80 learners, eight classrooms including an IT centre, informal learning and recreation spaces and a workshop viewing gallery.

Other features will include recreation and dining space and the building will benefit from sustainable drainage, eco-friendly landscaping and lighting and a low maintenance sustainable heating system with PV solar units on the roof.

HETA was founded in 1967 and currently has 600 apprentices on programme, working with 350 employers. The company delivers 16 apprenticeship standards and returns Higher Nationals pass rates of 100% at Level 5 and 88% at Level 4 as well as 98% at BTEC Level 3.

Specialist machinery such as a mulcher, flail, shredder and merlo rotating telehandler and grapple saw are used for speed, safety and efficiency, plus specialist pruning and felling undertaken by professional tree surgeons experienced in site clearance in difficult situations. Their team has previously carried out clearance work on the Peterborough Spalding bypass, cleared trees on the Carlise bypass, large tree felling on sections of the M1 and M40 redevelopment, as well as numerous commercial site clearances across Lincolnshire and the UK.

Their site clearance services are used by property developers, builders, local government, rail, or construction companies, earthworks, military installations, architects and anyone seeking planning permission to redevelop a site, reroute roads or reclaim brownfield sites.

As professional tree surgeons, Lincolnshire Tree Services can undertake tree surveys and tree reports prior to site clearance and advise on trees to be retained. Mature trees can add amenity value to a proposed building plot and the planning authority will usually require a professional tree report as part of

the application to redevelop the site. They can advise on how to protect trees not being cleared as part of the site redevelopment, what materials to use and attend site to supervise root protection during clearance and construction work.

Lincolnshire Tree Services has an Environment Agency exemption to compost waste which allows them to remove all wood chip and timber from site for ease of the contractor. They also offer stump grinding. Their staff are qualified with CPCS, CITB, CSCS, CISRS, CSR and CSIS to work on construction sites and all relevant arboriculture qualifications.

Hull Business Energy Efficiency Scheme

HBEES saves SMEs energy and money

Some SMEs in Hull are already playing their part in reducing the UK’s carbon emissions by geng involved in the Hull Business Energy Efficiency Scheme (HBEES), you should do the same. We’re making the city a greener place by providing experse and funding towards the cost of new heang, lighng, electric vehicle charging units and solar panels that minimise energy consumpon, reduce carbon emissions and save businesses money in the process.

Our mission is to make smart energy systems accessible and affordable for small and medium enterprises in Hull. By offering up to £10,000 of funding, we give you the freedom to explore environmentally friendly soluons that could otherwise prove too expensive to purchase.

Any business with fewer than 250 employees and an annual turnover of less than €50 million and a balance sheet of less than €43 million that pays business rates to Hull City Council is eligible to apply for HBEES funding. Our scheme is an ambious one, as its core aim is to support Hull in becoming a carbon neutral city by 2030, a full twenty years before the naonal target.

HBEES supports all kinds of businesses by making it possible for them to replace old heang and lighng units and also invest in sustainable energy systems. We recently awarded Kingston Theatre Hotel with a £7,384 grant toward the total cost of £18,465 for upgrading their heang system.

Gary Osborne at Kingston Theatre Hotel says: “We contacted HBEES to help us understand our environmental impacts and what could be done to reduce our carbon footprint. An energy efficiency audit identified that by replacing our gas boiler we could reduce our annual gas costs by approximately £1,100 and reduce annual carbon emissions by almost 6 tonnes. We replaced our 30-year-old boiler and awarded 40% towards the costs. From start to finish the application process was simple and easy to understand, the support and advice from Hull City Council has been first class.”

Our energy experts also worked with Lightowler, a commercial cleaning contractor who chose to install electric vehicle charging points for their fleet, enabling them to switch from diesel vans,

reducing greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 65 tonnes a year:

“We have worked closely with and been supported by HBEES to install energy efficient fittings to our premises in Hull,” says David Atkinson. “We found the team to be informative and efficient in their work with us.”

Meanwhile, our city is constantly changing and property developer Allenby Commercial is playing a leading role in breathing new life into red old buildings. They used HBEES funding to invest in a sophiscated solar PV system, allowing the business to produce its own clean energy and reduce their carbon emissions by almost 11 tonnes per annum:

“With the help of HBEES, we will shortly have a 35.8kw system fitted by East Riding Energy,” says Ben Ellis. “This will allow us to run our new warehouse space completely self-sufficiently, which has been an aim of the business for some time. I feel this proves how effective the scheme is in allowing business aims to become reality.”

Another great example of how HBEES works extremely well for industrial units and warehouses is Eltherington Ltd, who are an architectural aluminium manufacturer that used the funding to great effect, and its Managing Director, Michael Riding, has this to say:

“HBEES has enabled us to upgrade our lighting system throughout more than 15,000sqft of office and workshop space at our Hedon Road site. The new improved LED lighting will help us to reduce our energy bills AND reduce our carbon emissions by more than 115 tonnes per year. As a business, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and this has been a major step forward for us. Thank you to HBEES and the European Regional Development Fund for the grant – it has really helped us to kickstart our journey in becoming a greener, more sustainable organisation and will save us almost £40,000 a year off our electricity bill in the process.”

The team here at HBEES loves helping SME owners to run greener, cleaner and more profitable businesses. If you’re interested in saving energy and money, apply today at www.hullbees.co.uk

The commercial waste service run by a council for more than 25 years

One of England’s top councils for recycling East Riding of Yorkshire Council is one of the country’s top performers when it comes to recycling waste.

The authority recently achieved the highest recycling rate in England for domestic waste for three years running and has been honoured with a number of national awards for being environmentally friendly.

The most recent came in December when it won a prestigious National Recycling Award for Local Authority Success.

The council’s commercial waste service builds upon those award-winning achievements, offering a top-quality service to the area’s businesses, with a high standard of recycling.

We are proud to say 100% of the nonhazardous residual waste we collect from our customers is recovered and none is sent to landfill.

General waste is turned into Refuse Derived Fuel and used in the generation of electricity at a power plant in Yorkshire, while the rest is sent for recycling.

Running for more than 25 years, the team operates a weekly waste collection service for nearly 4,000 business customers across the East Riding, including shops, offices, restaurants, schools, leisure centres and caravan parks.

We have a team of friendly, approachable, local staff, with an office based in Willerby, near Hull, and our refuse collectors out on the road five days a week.

They cover the whole of the East Riding and have built up a wealth of knowledge about the area.

There are six dedicated vehicles making weekly collection of general waste from businesses –and they are supported by the council’s entire fleet of refuse lorries, used to collect recyclable waste from customers each fortnight.

Sarah Oliver, the council’s commercial waste manager said: “We are on hand to give impartial advice and support to anyone and we like to think our services can be tailored to any business or commercial property.

“We can arrange cost-effective, flexible and bespoke collection packages for customers, and being environmentally friendly is key to all our services.”

In the year, 2019 to 2020, the team collected more than 12,000 tonnes of general waste, around 1,000 tonnes a month. Around 1,000 tonnes of recyclable material is also collected each year.

As well as collecting general waste, recycling and clinical waste, the team also offers an event waste collection service.

In previous years, the team has been awarded waste collection contracts for big local events including Driffield Show, the largest event held in the East Riding.

The town of Goole in the East Riding of Yorkshire is at the centre of several major projects which will look to transform and develop the area’s prospects. Centrally located in Yorkshire, Goole will see major infrastructure and economic regeneration, alongside significant job creation.

Siemens Mobility already have plans for a £200m rail manufacturing facility, which will employ up to 700 people with many high-grade jobs, and a worldwide distribution hub is now being built for chemicals company Croda.

They will join established companies such as the Tesco distribution centre and glass-maker Guardian Industries in the Goole 36 enterprise zone – a huge swathe of former agricultural land adjacent to the M62.

All the above were smitten by Goole’s access to water, rail and road. Along with proximity to motorways, it has a railway station and is the UK’s most inland port.

TOWN DEAL

Towns Fund aims to drive sustainable economic regeneration of towns and deliver long term productivity growth through key objectives:

Urban regeneration - Skills and enterprise infrastructure - Connectivity

STEP IN GOOLE

Invest East Riding, alongside the University of York and other key partners are currently in the process of bidding for Goole to become the host site for the UKAEA STEP Prototype. Goole has been shortlisted as one of five potential sites, moving into the final assessment stage before a recommendation report is submitted.

A Town Deal for Goole began with the creation of the Towns Fund on 1st November 2019. The Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government (now known as the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities) launched a £3.6 billion Town Fund prospectus to address recognised growth constraints. The Towns Fund provides core public investment to rebalance the economy and support recovery from the impact of COVID-19.

The site in Goole was chosen due to it’s central location, this is seen as a fantastic opportunity for the whole of the Yorkshire and the wider Northern Powerhouse region and would enable the area to become a global leader for fusion technology.

Mark Hodson has spent much of his working life designing visionary buildings as an award-winning architect and director of Hodson Architects, based in Cleethorpes.

Now, as a board member for Lincs Inspire, he also has his sights set on helping to grow the charitable trust, where he is thrilled to be able to combine his business expertise along with his passion for sport, drama and art.

Born on the Nunsthorpe, Mark is proud of his local roots. In his own humble words Mark professes to be, “a local lad that’s gone away, learnt a bit, and has skills to share”.

Established in 2015, Lincs Inspire is responsible for managing leisure, sports, cultural and library services on behalf of local authorities, including North East Lincolnshire Council.

The goal, as the name implies, is to inspire people to lead more active and healthy lives.

Mark is delighted to be joining Lincs Inspire’s board at a time when, he considers, there isn’t a more relevant organisation dealing with sport, leisure, and culture in a post-pandemic environment, being invaluable in preserving people’s wellbeing.

Mark explains, “We have all awakened to the importance of our own wellbeing with issues concerning mental health being more important than ever. What I’d like to do is to encourage people to help themselves through cultural pursuits, sport, leisure, whatever it may be.”

Having a passion for drama at school and enjoying sport from an early age, spending many hours and days in ‘Scaffa Baths’, Mark firmly believes that buildings have a peculiar strength in linking memories and current situations together.

“The function of a building, the fond memories that buildings can instil and how strongly they connect with your past. It’s those connections and linkage skills which can be very important,” said Mark.

“I remember Grimsby Leisure Centre being built and thinking that it was the most amazing thing that had happened and, of course it was. At the time it was progressive, and it was great to have that kind of facility in the town.

“But my favourite building managed by the charity has to be Grimsby Central Library. Its humanistic 1960’s architecture is both beautiful and inspiring. It’s also where I did all my revision as a student. Consequently,

I still have a positive connection to that building.

“I’ve never regretted coming back to my hometown because it’s given me the chance to work in my own community, in the schools, colleges and buildings where I studied, and the places that were so important to me, Freeman Street for instance.”

As to Mark’s ambition for Lincs Inspire, it’s of course about the buildings, but also about its people - staff and customers.

He added: “Studying the facilities and the ways in which they could be adapted and improved to benefit both the experience of people visiting them but also staff and, of course, how that can be done to increase income.

“My ambition is also about raising the profile of the company and of the area. What the town doesn’t do particularly well is to reflect and tell its story. Grimsby’s past of fishing doesn’t need to be romanticised; we can tell those stories honestly, but also tell other stories. The renaissance of this town is long overdue and Lincs Inspire can be at the heart of that.”

Lincs Inspire is committed to working for its community and as a registered charity is governed by a board of trustees who share their expertise to guide the company forward.

Opportunity will outweigh our challenge as we look to a bright future.

Reflecting upon 2021, North East Lincolnshire Council Leader Cllr Philip Jackson, looks at the resilience of the borough and its determination to build a stronger economy and stronger communities.

North East Lincolnshire continues to face unprecedented times.

The uncertainly that this dreadful pandemic has brought with it has affected us all to a greater or lesser extent. However, as individual communities, we have united and have explored new ways of working, new ways of living and new ways of coming together.

What we have also achieved is a fresh determination to find ambition and opportunity despite the significant hurdles we have faced and will continue to face.

Over the last 12 months in North East Lincolnshire we have seen many opportunities come our way and that will continue into 2022 and beyond as we look to support our communities – both the people and the businesses. These opportunities will allow us to provide a better future for our young people and families, which we need if we are to continue to develop and grow.

Twelve months has seen tremendous change in some parts of our borough, proof of a willingness to ‘make things happen’. Working with partners in the public and private sector, the transformation of Grimsby Town Centre has begun and will continue.

Our first Festival of the Sea was held across the town centre and showed just how we can blend our maritime past with our future to create a cultural extravaganza. Keep your eyes out on social media and the news for details of the event this summer along with others in Grimsby town centre.

Work hasn’t stopped there, and 2022 will see our urban transformation continue as money secured from various Government and private sector funds is invested.

Alongside this, work will start on the Grimsby Youth Zone in the heart of our town centre, located in the West Haven Malting, a Grade 2 listed building that has been derelict for a generation. This project is representative of this borough’s drive to invest in our children and young people. They are our adults of tomorrow, and we are determined to overcome the challenges that we have within areas of our community to improve the opportunities for them.

With Cleethorpes fast becoming the jewel in the East Coast’s crown, we have plans to further invest in the resort and were delighted to welcome the internationally known Wayne Hemingway to lead the development of a visionary masterplan.

Within all of the above we are threading the environmental and green agenda. As a world-leading hub for renewable energy, North East Lincolnshire hosts some of the leading ‘green’ firms – taking advantage of our unique positioning along the South Humber Bank for their operations and maintenance activity.

Myenergi, a Lincolnshire-grown company leading the way in the design of renewable energy products, has its new headquarters at our multi-million-pound Pioneer Business Park. This stands alongside our award-winning ecological mitigation site Cress Marsh. Such activity is attracting new business and projects of international importance, all of which continues to push our area to the fore.

The re-invention of North East Lincolnshire and our main towns of Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham will be determined by our ability to succeed on an industrial, commercial and social level. It will not be easy, and we must overcome challenges that will continue into 2022 and beyond. But our desire to work with our partners and our community is real and we will continue to push for positive change.

Wherever we go with Covid-19, there is little doubt that the concept of “living with the virus” will also mean living with the legal implications.

An additional challenge for employers is keeping on top of the day-to-day legal issues which they faced long before the fresh challenges of the last two years.

The pandemic has delayed consultation on a variety of proposals and legislation such as the Employment Bill, which could reappear during 2022 and highlight issues including flexible working, extended redundancy protection, neonatal care leave for parents and a requirement to pass on all tips and service charges to workers. The uncertainty of the timetable for new legislation does mean that employers need to be prepared to move quickly to put in place new policies as legislation is implemented.

For example the government has confirmed it will introduce a new right to carer’s leave. The entitlement will be to take up to five working days’ unpaid leave each year which can be taken in blocks and will be a day one right for qualifying employees.

Employers also need to be aware of changes to the minimum wage, and larger businesses will find that the deadlines for gender pay gap reporting are likely to return to normal.

Ed Jenneson, Partner and Head of Employment at Rollits LLP, warned pandemic dismissals were going through the tribunal system now and said that in the future there are likely to be issues arising from vaccinations.

Ed said: “The vaccination roll-out has raised many issues, notably whether it is possible to make vaccination compulsory without infringing employee rights or opening the business up to a potential tribunal claim.

“Vaccination is a legal requirement in care homes and there are plans to extend that to health and social care. But vaccination is not a mandatory requirement in other industries and a business could face legal challenges if vaccination is made a requirement for existing or prospective staff.”

“Vaccination is a legal requirement in care homes and there are plans to extend that to health and social care. But vaccination is not a mandatory requirement in other industries and a business could face legal challenges if vaccination is made a requirement for existing or prospective staff. Adopting such a position is likely to raise issues including discrimination and/or claims of constructive or unfair dismissal.”

Rollits has offices in Hull and York and reinforced its employment law credentials during 2021 with recognition in the latest edition of Chambers UK in the top band for employment law in the area, and in the UK Legal 500 as one of the top-ranked firms in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

The employment team at Rollits has worked closely with businesses since Covid first began to hit the economy early in 2020. There was the initial need to safeguard their trading position and the employment of their employees which started with furlough leave and as the pandemic moved through its various stages, businesses were required to introduce measures which would allow people to return to work safely through the use of risk assessments.

Ed said: “Notwithstanding the potential difficulties around mandatory vaccinations, businesses should still create a policy on vaccinations which can encourage vaccination and may perhaps incentivise vaccinations which is something we have seen introduced by large employers like IKEA..

“For example it may be possible to encourage employees to get vaccinated by offering paid time off to get jabbed and by pointing staff towards official guidance and information. But employers need to take care when taking such steps as offering incentives can put businesses at risk of claims of discrimination from people who are unvaccinated. There are also data protection issues to consider arising out of the collection and storage of employee vaccination data”.

“As a result of Covid-19 we have a new perspective on various aspects of employment law. The end of furlough may have forced some businesses to look at redundancies which were not on the radar when the pandemic started, or it may have prompted employers to make changes to a working location, hours of work, duties or pay levels.”

As businesses emerge from the pandemic, the area which has possibly presented the most searching long-term questions is working from home.

Having experienced furlough or working remotely, some staff are requesting a change from full-time to part-time status or the opportunity to work from home permanently. The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy has been conducting a consultation on extending the right to request flexible working to all employees removing the current requirement to have 26 weeks’ service.

Such a change will not confer an automatic right on employees but there will still be the potential for discrimination claims to arise if employers refuse such requests.

Ed said: “As a result of Covid-19 we have a new perspective on various aspects of employment law. The end of furlough may have forced some businesses to look at redundancies which were not on the radar when the pandemic started, or it may have prompted employers to make changes to a working location, hours of work, duties or pay levels. There has also been a sharper focus on the work-life balance, with staff asking to change where, when and how they work, raising the question of whether such requests can be accommodated without having a detrimental impact on business needs.”.

Optimistic Outlook for Businesses

A survey of businesses across the UK has revealed that 48% have a positive outlook for the next 12 months. The survey conducted in conjunction with the UK200Group, of which Forrester Boyd is a member, also asked businesses how they have fared over the last 12 months. 36% stated they performed better whilst 37% had a worse period. The results show quite an equal split reflecting the impacts of the last 12 months but we are starting to see some positivity looking forward.

It has been quite extraordinary how businesses and their employees have adapted to change over the last 12 months.

Kevin Hopper, Partner at Forrester Boyd said, “We have seen so much dedication and resilience, not just within the businesses that we serve, but also from our own employees who have continued to deliver an excellent service to our clients throughout all the challenges faced. I really cannot commend them highly enough. They have all been exceptional”.

Mike Beckett, Partner and Chairman at Forrester Boyd shares some of his views on what he sees as the challenges and opportunities for businesses in the Lincolnshire and Humber region.

The next 12 months are going to be challenging for all businesses. Whilst we are seeing positivity across many sectors, we still need to be very mindful of economic pressures. Rising material costs, utility costs and labour costs, particularly with the rise in minimum wage, will have a huge impact on many regional businesses. Add to this rising inflation and a shortage of access to labour, and we still have a bumpy road ahead.

These pressures could see some looking to cut costs in different areas of their business. This in turn could have a knock on impact as price pressures could lead to more competition and the risk of losing customers. We would always recommend to any business that before they look to challenge supplier costs and risk well established and loyal supplier relationships, that they look at ways they could be more efficient.

In feedback from our own annual client survey 30% of respondents stated they are looking to grow their business and increase profitability over the next 12 months. During periods of

It is heartening to see that our regional businesses appear to be weathering the storm and succeeding, which is a testament to their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit. We have seen great strength and resilience in our business community which is something I am sure, all businesses will take forward with them.

The benefits of outsourcing, accounting and bookkeeping

Accounting and bookkeeping are complex, but fundamental parts of any business that require time and expertise. Some businesses choose to outsource elements of their accounting and bookkeeping. This not only avoids the costs associated with hiring staff, but it also provides access to an extensive knowledge base that one individual may not necessarily have.

For the smaller businesses, the cost of hiring an internal accountant or bookkeeper, especially one with the right skill set to manage all their businesses financial needs can be challenging. If you are lucky enough to find that employee who fits the bill, recruitment costs can be high. Add to that the cost of professional development and all of a sudden employment costs can sky rocket.

This is why we are seeing a shift to a fully outsourced model for business finances. Outsourcing often provides a cost-effective alternative to recruitment. You have consistency of service from individuals who; specialise in the service they offer, have a structured professional development programme, and deliver continuity of service. You no longer have to worry about holiday and sickness cover either.

The last 12 months has seen an increase in mergers and acquisitions and a positive attitude towards business growth. For these businesses, they will want to spend their valuable time on their core business areas to achieve this, but with this growth and development comes increases in financial management. This is where outsourcing finance functions can really help by offering access to an experienced team who can provide additional resources whether temporarily, or permanent.

Did we mention that by outsourcing you’re getting the expertise of a whole team rather than just one individual?

You also only pay for the services you need. A good accountancy firm will also have specialists in areas such as tax planning, R&D

claims, pensions, capital allowances, wealth management and corporate finance. So, if your accounting functions are becoming too much to handle or your time would be better spent elsewhere, then it is definitely worth talking to us about how we can assist with outsourced services.

When should you consider outsourcing?

There may be a number of reasons why you would consider outsourcing some or all of your accounting functions. These could be:

• You don’t need a full time bookkeeper but need more expertise than you currently have.

• You’re struggling to hire the right person for the job at the right cost.

ACCOUNTANCY & TAX CONSULTING HUMBERGUIDES.CO.UK 46

• You’re planning to grow your business and need additional support.

• You need temporary support at yearend, or to provide cover for holiday or maternity/paternity leave.

• You need periodic high level support such as a management accountant or part-time

What is stopping you from talking to an expert about an R&D Tax Credits Claim?

At Cooden – R&D Tax Specialists, we were in somewhat celebratory mood as 2021 drew to a close. On 16 December we received the last payout of the year into our client account, it was for one of our newly acquired clients in 2021, a specialist veterinary care business based in Wales. This claim was momentous for Cooden as it saw our clients’ Research and Development tax savings top £5 million in a calendar year for the first time.

2021 has been a year of steady growth with a number of new significant businesses becoming clients. We’ve even taken on a Blue Chip Cyber Security business, with a number of claims for their UK-based entities. Our goal was to obtain 4 new clients who would have claims of over £75k, in the end we took on 6.

It would appear as though our stress-free service offering has gone down very well with our customers. It consists of

• a no-obligation discovery session to determine your eligibility prior to starting the claim;

• a low-hassle data collection process for both the financial element and the technical element of claims; and

• the use of our client account to receive funds and for visibility to chase HMRC when they haven’t been forthcoming.

So, there really are few excuses left for you not to at least have an initial discussion with our Director, Simon Bulteel, but just in case you have any others:

• If you are worried that it might not be worth it, our average claim value was just under £75,000;

• If you are worried that we can’t handle large claims, our largest claim was for just under £700,000 for a scaling up Cyber-Security business and our next largest claim was over £575,000 for a technology company delivering banking solutions for Instant Payments.

• If you are worried, you’ll be wasting our time, you won’t, our smallest claim was for just under £1,500 for a start-up skincare business.

• If you are worried that HMRC are going to punish you for making a claim, we’ve had one enquiry in 2021 into a Patent Box claim, where HMRC couldn’t find a patent in the name of the company.

There really are no excuses left to stop you. We are here to guide you, just like we have over a 150 businesses before you, to a successful and rewarding R&D Tax Credits claim. With new changes coming in 2023, there has never been a better time to start claiming for your new product developments or improvements and with the ability to claim for two prior years, you could see a significant boost to your 2022 cashflow. You can book your no-obligation discovery session at a time that suits you by visiting https://calendly. com/simon-bulteel/discovery-humberguide

NEW INSTITUTE OPENS TO FILL SKILLS GAPS

Have you heard about the new Institutes of Technology popping up around the country? There’s a new one for the Humber, based at East Riding College in Beverley. Institutes of Technology, or ‘IoTs’ are government-funded regional centres set up to boost skills in technology and engineering. Here’s what the IoT means for employers in the Humber area…

What’s an IoT?

IoTs deliver high quality, higher-level technical qualifications with a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects.

Why are they important?

IoTs provide investment in higher level skills, preparing students for the workplace of the future, now. And providing employers with a talent pool of highly qualified technical and professional employees.

What do we mean by higher-level?

The Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Technology delivers higher technical qualifications such as HNCs, HNDs, Apprenticeships and Foundation Degrees. These are university-level courses delivered locally in specialist, state-of-the-art facilities.

What makes it state-of-the-art?

We’re glad you asked! When we say state-of-the-

art we mean facilities such as the new CAD suite – used for computer-aided design, the science lab – used for stress testing and experimenting to understand materials, and the specialist industrystandard workshops. These facilities mean higher-level engineers can learn advanced skills on sophisticated machinery which mirrors the kind of tech they will use in the workplace.

Who pays for it all?

The IoT in the Yorkshire and Humber has brought government investment of over £10million of capital funding into the region.

The Institute of Technology at East Riding College was funded by the Department for Education, the Hull and East Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership, and East Riding College. It houses specialist high-level training facilities for engineering and technical disciplines.

What’s the advantages of studying at an IoT?

Enhanced technical delivery in an advanced

technical setting. The curriculum is designed to meet the specific needs of local employers. Courses are delivered by a specialist team of engineers and computer scientists, all of whom are current or recent practitioners in their field.

What courses are available?

The higher-level courses offered at the IOT in Beverley cover Engineering and Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering as well as Computing. Higher Apprenticeships include Engineering, Engineering Manufacturing Technician, Operations Engineering Technician and Advanced Apprenticeships in Maintenance Operations - Fabrication and Welding.

What’s in it for employers?

Employers will benefit from a future talent pool with in-demand skills as well as having the opportunity to train existing staff through higher-level apprenticeships and degree-level qualifications that will enhance their workforce.

Hull University Business School receives prestigious AMBA re-accreditation

Hull University Business School is ranked as one of the top two per cent in the world after securing prestigious re-accreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA).

Accreditation from AMBA, one of the world’s leading authorities on post-graduate business education, represents the highest standard of achievement in post-graduate business education.

It demonstrates the University Business School’s efforts to provide the highest-calibre teaching, curriculum and student interaction opportunities, with a focus on adapting the curriculum to meet the evolving needs of organisations both in the UK and globally.

Professor Stephen Hardy, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Law and Politics at the University of Hull, said: “The University is delighted that we have been reaccredited by AMBA which serves to evidence our Business School’s commitment to providing excellence in educating future business leaders. This much valued partnership with AMBA also enables our students to maximise the benefits of such a successful association.”

Upon receiving AMBA accreditation, all current MBA students and recent MBA alumni of Hull University Business School are invited to join AMBA’s global member community of more than 56,000 students and alumni.

With representatives from more than 150 countries, AMBA offers a variety of networking, thought leadership and career development opportunities, alongside a variety of benefits.

AMBA officials praised both the academic and administrative staff for their commitment to the success and wellbeing of the students, and upholding the highest standards within the programme.

The faculty are offered additional pedagogical and pastoral support both before and during their time teaching on the programmes.

Andrew Main Wilson, Chief Executive of the Association of MBAs and Business Graduates Association (BGA) said: “I’m very pleased that Hull University Business School has achieved AMBA re-accreditation. The School is an important part of our global network. I look forward to continuing to work with this prestigious Business School.”

Another significant improvement made since the Business School’s last accreditation in 2017 included the corporate marketing of the programmes which was seen to have improved industry relationships within the local economy.

The Business School aims to equip managers and business professionals with all the skills they need to succeed in a fast-changing and interconnected world.

It maximises the connections between excellent research, learning and teaching across disciplines, and places heavy emphasis on corporate engagement by working with partners across the sector.

Yorkshire and Humber Universities vow to help region bounce back stronger from Covid-19

Universities, employers, and local leaders will be working together to create thousands of local jobs as the recovery from the pandemic gathers pace.

Research published by Universities UK (UUK), Universities and the UK’s economic recovery: an analysis of future impact, which was compiled by the National Centre for Entrepreneurship in Education (NCEE), predicts that over the next five years universities in the Yorkshire and Humber region will:

• Provide support to businesses and charities worth over £1.2 billion

• Give 3,500 years’ worth of upskilling and training to businesses and charities

• Help 1,000 new businesses and charities to be formed

• Train 14,000 nurses, 6,000 medics, 18,000 teachers*

The research was published as UUK launched #GettingResults – a campaign to put universities at the heart of the economic and social recovery – with a commitment from universities to do even more to reach out to new partners locally and nationally and deliver even greater impact than currently estimated. Throughout the pandemic, businesses, and a wide range of sectors not just within the Yorkshire and Humber region, but across the UK, have suffered greatly, leading to economic and social damage. The contributions made by universities and their students through knowledge and skills exchange, partnerships

and support for local employers have huge potential to help businesses, industries, and other partners to continue, recover and thrive following the pandemic. The skills of University of Hull graduates will also have an important role to play in the future success of businesses and sectors during the Covid-19 recovery process.

Professor Susan Lea, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hull, said: “Universities in Yorkshire and the Humber are very much open for business and, as an anchor institution in our region, the University of Hull will continue to develop even closer links with industry and charities. Our students, staff, researchers, and graduates have so much to offer, particularly in these challenging times. Working with our partners in the region, we must accelerate our collective endeavour and joint working to enable recovery from the pandemic and bring benefit to local people and organisations.”

Professor Julia Buckingham CBE, Universities UK’s President, said: “By working closely with their partners, including local government and employers, universities will play a vital role in the UK’s post-recovery. Together, they can contribute significantly to future economic success and improve lives. Moving forward it is important that employers fully take advantage of universities’ support and develop productive relationships so the region can bounce back stronger from the pandemic.”

University fourth in ‘North’ ranking in 2022 Times Good University Guide

The University of Hull is one of the top universities in the ‘North’* (Yorkshire and the Humber) ranking according to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022.

Once again named in the top 5 universities in the ‘North’ ranking, the University climbed 8 places in the prestigious Good University Guide, up from 60th to 52nd in the table.

This year the University of Hull moves up to number 4 in the ‘North’ (Yorkshire and the Humber), with the universities of Leeds, York and Sheffield in the top three spots.

This result builds on last year’s success which saw the University of Hull climb 17 places from 77th to joint 60th in the table, and named as number 5 in the top 5 universities in the northern ranking, which covers Yorkshire and the Humber region.

“The University of Hull is celebrating a strong second year in both The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide and The Guardian rankings: Up to 53rd in the Guardian table from 72nd last year, the University has climbed a total of 42 places in the last two years.

Overall, the University has now climbed 51 places over the last 3 years.

Earlier this week, the University of Hull was also pleased to announce that it had risen 19 places in the 2022 Guardian University Rankings.

Professor Susan Lea, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hull, said: “A rise of 8 places to 52nd in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide, as well as taking our place in the top 4 in the guide’s northern ranking is an extremely positive result. The fact that it follows such a strong performance in The Guardian rankings is also to be celebrated.

“I would like to thank all of our students and staff at the University – for it is their hard work and commitment that has made our remarkable success in these rankings possible.”

The rankings list is based on an analysis of student satisfaction with teaching quality and student experience, entry standards, research quality, and graduate prospects. Since 2018 the guide also includes social inclusion

rankings for universities in England and Wales. The tables are based on key measures to reflect the diversity of their intake and subsequent success when attending university.

The University of Hull is celebrating a strong second year in both The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide and The Guardian rankings: Up to 53rd in the Guardian table from 72nd last year, the University has climbed a total of 42 places in the last two years.

This is the University’s highest position in The Guardian’s league table since 2010, when Hull was ranked 52nd.

Four courses ranked in the top 10 nationally – American Studies, Physics, Earth & Marine Sciences and Education.

Across the last three Guardian University Rankings publications, the University has climbed 53 places – the greatest increase of any university during the period.

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 provides the definitive rankings for UK universities and the most comprehensive overview of higher education in Britain. It includes profiles on 135 universities, making use of the latest data published in the past two months.

The Graduate Prospect indicator is based on the most recent Higher Education Graduate Outcomes statistics (for UK domicile full-time first degree leavers, 15 months after graduating) for the academic year 2018/19, published by HESA July 2021.

An innovative University of Hull cooling system has helped Hull City Council reduce electricity consumption at its data centre by as much as 80 per cent.

University of Hull cooling technology helps council cut data centre CO2 emissions

Using a super-performance Dew Point Cooling system, developed at the University’s Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies, Hull City Council has saved over £50,000 in electricity cooling costs, and has reduced its carbon footprint by 82.5 tonnes a year.

The technology was first tested at the University’s Aura Innovation Centre in Hessle, before the trial was extended to Hull City Council’s data centre in the city centre.

Dr Zishang Zhu, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Hull, said: “This project is the culmination of 15 years of work at the University, developing the technology to a point where we could demonstrate its potential at our own Aura Innovation Centre.

“After the success of that pilot project, the next step was applying the same technology to Hull City Council’s data centre. The savings, both in carbon emissions and cost, have been hugely impressive. We have now been able to demonstrate, in a real-world environment, the potential this cooling technology has. It can offer enormous benefits to companies, both from an environmental and financial point of view.”

The Dew Point Cooling technology can lead

to an 80-90 per cent reduction in electricity consumption and carbon emissions compared to traditional cooling systems.

For the project, two 4kW dew point coolers were installed at the Aura Innovation Centre, to service its computer room. Data was recorded from August 6 to September 9, with a daily energy saving of 38.6kWh.

The second pilot – at Hull City Council’s data centre – saw the installation of a 100kw cooling system.

The recording period is ongoing, but so far has led to an 80% reduction in electricity consumption for the cooling of the building. It has also reduced carbon emissions by 82.5 tonnes a year.

The technology has also saved the council £149 per day in its electricity cooling costs –equivalent to £54,000 per year.

The project ran until the end of October, when funding for the programme expired.

Councillor Rosie Nicola, portfolio holder for environmental services at Hull City Council, said: “Hull companies and organisations are leading the way when it comes to green technologies and innovation.

“As a local authority we are committed to championing new green technologies and putting them into practice ourselves. I’m delighted that we have been able to work with the University of Hull on this project which demonstrates not only that green innovation works, but also how it can significantly benefit us.”

Now the trial project at the Council’s Data Centre has been completed, the team at the University – led by Professor Xudong Zhao –will seek further funding to continue the work.

End-of-life study into offshore wind turbines led by University of Hull team

A University of Hull study into the end-of-life cycle of offshore wind turbines has been boosted by £100,000 of funding.

The team, led by Computer Science lecturer Dr Nina Dethlefs, will focus on the role machine learning could play in helping to monitor and predict the level of fatigue for any wind turbine within an offshore farm.

A particular focus of the study is on the monopile of the turbine – the foundation which extends the turbine tower under water and into the seabed.

The monopile is one of the most at-risk components of the turbine to fatigue, due to stresses and strains caused by the impact of waves, tides and weather.

The new research, led by Hull, is supported by £100,000 funding from the Supergen ORE Hub.

Dr Dethlefs, Principal Investigator of the new project, said: “Accurate estimation of monopile fatigue is essential to help inform decisions which are made into the potential decommissioning and replacement of offshore wind turbines, as well as optimising future design and maintenance.

“Due to the challenging and unpredictable environments these turbines are located in, accurate predictions on the fatigue and wear are often subject to significant error.

“Using machine learning, we hope to be able to more accurately predict the end-of-life stage

of a turbine. A huge thank you must go to the Supergen ORE Hub for its support in this vital research.”

Offshore wind energy is key in the UK’s plan to deliver the legally binding Net Zero 2050 targets, with an aim to quadruple the capacity by 2030.

The oldest offshore wind monopiles are rapidly approaching their end of designed life. The next-generation of wind turbines are significantly larger, yet still monopile support structures dominate.

It is hoped the use of machine learning and computer technology can improve understanding of the life cycle of a turbine.

Dr Dethlefs has been supported in the research by a team comprising of Professor Lizzy Cross from the University of Sheffield, Hull postdoctoral researcher Dr Agota Mockute, and project partners Atkins, Eleven-I, TECOSIM, Jesmond Engineering and ORE Catapult.

Dr Mockute said: “This project has brought together a strong, interdisciplinary team from both industry and academia to explore a very real challenge facing the offshore wind industry. “By furthering our understanding of monopile fatigue accumulation and hence the end-of-life state of a wind turbine, we can massively increase the efficiency at which these machines are either decommissioned, repaired or replaced, or have their lifetime extended.

“The first offshore wind turbines to be installed in the UK are now only several years away from the end of their estimated lifespan. This research will therefore play a critical role in the next stage of their lives.”

Funding for the University of Hull came as part of a wider £800,000 allocated by the Supergen ORE Hub to eight projects at UK institutions through its Flexible Funding Scheme, designed to support ambitious research in offshore renewable energy.
