Farmers and rural businesses must keep thorough records if ‘opting to tax’

Farming and rural businesses are being advised to be extra diligent and keep detailed records when ‘opting to tax’.

Experts have warned that HM Revenue & Customs’ (HMRC) decision to stop issuing option to tax acknowledgment letters from 1 February 2023 puts the impetus on rural land and property owners to ensure that accurate, detailed records are kept on file.

While the supply of land or commercial/agricultural property is largely exempt from VAT, the party making the supply can elect an option to tax if they wish. This is generally so that the supplier can reclaim the VAT incurred on associated costs. Any option to tax election must be notified to HMRC.

Previously, when buyers and tenants needed to know whether they would incur VAT when buying or renting land or commercial/ agricultural property, the letter from HMRC acknowledging the notification was accepted as proof of VAT status. Now, as HMRC has made the decision to stop sending out such letters, landlords and sellers are being advised to ensure that thorough records are kept in order to demonstrate that a valid option to tax has been made.

An automated HMRC email will be sent out when a tax election is submitted to the option to tax unit, which should be kept as part of

records, but no acknowledgement will be received if an election to tax is made by post.

Failure to keep accurate records can cause complications further down the line, and uncertainties regarding option to tax elections can potentially delay or even prevent transactions being completed. HMRC will not check to confirm whether an election has been made where it is believed to be under six years old, as it is the business/land owners’ responsibility to keep their own records for at least six years.

Rural land and property owners need to ensure they have the procedures in place to prevent any future issues. For any help on this or other accountancy issues relating to farming and rural business, do not hesitate to get in touch with the agriculture experts at Forrester Boyd Chartered Accountants. Email: agriculture@forrester-boyd. co.uk or call one of the firms offices. Details can be found on their website: www.forrester-boyd.co.uk

The Big Show is back with a Bang

LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW RETURNS IN 2023

Lincolnshire’s biggest annual event, the Lincolnshire Show, will be making its grand return this June. Hosted and organised by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS), The Big Show will take place at the Lincolnshire Showground and is set to welcome more than 60,000 visitors across two days with a brand-new timetable of

Now in its 138th year, The Lincolnshire Show will take place on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 June 2023, with tickets now on sale.

This year’s event will see the addition of new zones and breath-taking entertainment in the Main Ring as well as a range of favourite exhibitors and spectacular live demonstrations, with further details to be revealed over the coming weeks.

The Lincolnshire Show 2023 is set to welcome more than 60,000 visitors, who can expect an action-packed two days, including competitions, delicious local produce in the Food Court, beautiful blooms, local art, and handmade crafts in the Lincolnshire Lifestyle Marquee.

Andrew Buckley, chairman at Lincolnshire Agricultural Society said: “We can’t wait to welcome visitors back to the Lincolnshire Show this year. We really

lincolnshireinfocus.co.uk
14 LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW 2023

want to encourage families, young people and individuals to come in and join in the fun. We offer an amazing array of exhibitors, live demonstrations and interactive displays that are loved by all.”

With excitement already mounting, this year also welcomes the new LAS president, HM Lord-Lieutenant, Toby Dennis.

Andrew continued: “A big welcome also to the new LAS president, HM Lord-Lieutenant, Toby Dennis. It’s great to have him on board for what is set to be another fantastic show. We are a great charity which aims to educate young people, families and individuals about food, farming and the countryside. All profits are used to fund educational work, supporting local children from around Lincolnshire.”

A popular favourite, the Schools’ Challenge, will also return to the Exo Centre this year, where local schools showcase their selected Schools’ Challenge entry. With ten challenges to choose from, the event aims to inspire young people to gain a better understanding of Lincolnshire’s rich agricultural history, its horticulture and landbased activities.

Returning this year will be The Lincolnshire Kitchen, where visitors will be able to take a seat and watch top chefs cook with local produce and create tasty treats.

Meanwhile, other highlights from the event will include immersive livestock and equine classes taking place across both days, and the chance to visit the Agricultural Line to see machinery from past to present.

Andrew continued: “This year is set to be our best and busiest yet, and we’re excited to welcome visitors once again. We have such a rich and diverse history of agriculture in Lincolnshire, and The Lincolnshire Show is always a fantastic opportunity to celebrate that.

“This year, we’ve worked hard to make it a show to remember, with some long-standing classics such as the Aviation Zone, but also a few new surprises too – watch this space for further exciting announcements.”

The Lincolnshire Show is organised by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, which is a registered charity.

Introducing King Charles III Coronation Tea

- A Limited Edition Tea by Wrendale & The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company

To celebrate the King’s Coronation, we were approached by Wrendale Designs to create a special box of tea, featuring a wonderful illustration of King Charles III with a Jack Russell.

This limited edition product is available in limited quantity. First come first served with limited stock. We would hate for you to miss out!

‘The Coronation Blend’ is a delicate yet full-bodied breakfast style tea which has been blended and taste tested in the traditional way. Each box is hand packed and delivers a tea to be enjoyed any time of day. Packaging made from sustainably sourced textured board from responsibly managed forests, the beautiful box contains 40 compostable tea bags.

“I first met Hannah at an event when our company journeys had just begun. Now, with both companies celebrating 10 years, it’s the perfect time to form a collaboration and launch a product to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III. We are very proud to have been asked to produce this lovely box of tea, displaying Hannah’s amazing artwork. In her painting, his personality truly shines through.”

Susie, Founder, The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company

“As committed tea-drinkers here at Wrendale, we are so excited about the collaboration with Susie and her team. The Lincoln Tea and Coffee Co produce the most delicious tasting, award-winning teas – they share our values of excellence and are committed to sustainability. The very special coronation blend is certified by the Rainforest Alliance and we feel that this is a very fitting way to celebrate the Coronation.”

Hannah Dale, Director, Wrendale Designs

Hannah has painted this beautiful design especially for the coronation and there is limited stock of this exclusive item.

Hannah was very excited to reveal the piece of art she had created to commemorate the King’s Coronation in May. When the team

first asked Hannah to produce something, it took her a while to decide how to approach it. She really wanted to avoid the stereotypical iconography associated with Royal events and to come up with something really unique.

In the end, Hannah decided to try and depict The King’s character and drew on things that we know are important to him, for example his love of art and gardening, his rescue Jack Russell terriers and the fact that delphiniums are his favourite flowers.

We have been blown away by your kind messages and response so far, thank you!

Enjoy a slice of the celebrations for yourself during the Coronation and beyond. We will be drinking our Limited Edition King Charles III Coronation Tea from dusk until dawn on Coronation Day.

To order this limited edition, limited stock breakfast style tea, please head over to our website www.thelincolnteaandcoffeecompany. co.uk/product/king-charles-coronationtea-wrendale/

Enjoy drinking like royal-tea too!

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust celebrates 75th anniversary

The nature conservation charity has been establishing nature reserves, campaigning for wildlife and empowering people to take action for nature since 1948.

Seventy-five years ago in the post-war world of rations and austerity, some were planning a better future for people and wildlife. In 1948, a small group of naturalists led by the late Ted Smith, then aged 28, founded the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. They had recognised that action had to be taken to save Lincolnshire’s last remaining wild places.

The first action of the new charity was to sign a landmark agreement with Lincolnshire County Council which established Gibraltar Point as a nature reserve. It was the first of almost 100 nature reserves that are now managed by the Trust. Many of the nature reserves would not exist if it wasn’t for the hard work and dedication that went into saving them.

Today these nature reserves have become much loved places for many of us as well homes for a variety of wildlife. Reserves such as Willow Tree Fen have welcomed back cranes to the Lincolnshire fens after nearly 400 years of extinction, with four consecutive years of crane chicks hatching. Alongside cranes other absent species are now being spotted regularly such as otters at Woodhall Spa Airfield Nature Reserve and bitterns at Far Ings National Nature Reserve.

The return of these species are great examples of how, with the right management, wildlife can not only return but thrive.

WILDER LINCOLNSHIRE FESTIVAL

From wilder communities to wilder landscapes, we will be celebrating at Doddington Hall on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 September 2023. With guided walks, workshops, activities and displays, this will be an opportunity to discover more about how the Trust, Doddington Hall and local communities are bringing wildlife back to the county. Be inspired and discover how you can help wildlife in your garden or community greenspace.

Mark the date in your diary and we’ll see you there.

The Spring Guide to a Better Home

Humber is the ideal place to visit. Their dedicated team are experts in horticulture, pottery, hospitality and home decor, offering you unrivalled choice, service and advice from people who really know their stuff. Installing a conservatory is one of the best ways to bring the outdoors into your home. Not only will it create an extra space for entertaining guests, but it will also help to increase the value of your property.

If you’re looking for a practical outbuilding to store all your garden items, tools, and furniture, then a new shed, log cabin, or garage is a great option. Don’t forget to invest in a new garage door too, so you can keep your belongings secure.

So, this spring, why not spruce up your home and garden to make the most of the vibrant weather?

When it comes to interior styling, it is important to choose a colour scheme that reflects the vibrancy and freshness of spring time. Light and airy tones, such as pastel blues, muted pinks and greens, are a great way to instantly lift a space and bring the outside in. To complete the look, why not add a few statement pieces of furniture, with a variety of seasonal plants and flowers is also a great way to give your home a unique and effortless feel.

When it comes to your garden, there’s plenty you can do to get it ready for the warmer weather. Lawn mowing and tree pruning are key tasks to ensure everything looks neat and tidy. EARWAX REMOVAL FOR COMFORT &

A wax blocked ear can be very uncomfortable and can cause a temporary Hearing Loss, Dizziness and Tinnitus. Wax can also cause hearing aids to whistle and be ineffective. Speak to anyone who has suffered from it and its far more debilitating than you may originally think! A simple wax removal procedure can vastly improve the quality of these patients lives.

However, Government minister Edward Argar announced in September 2020 that people suffering from a build-up of ear wax were no longer entitled to have their ears syringed on the NHS in England. Nationally this decision is being challenged with groups lobbying parliament. Some GP’s do still offer it but the vast majority have stopped all together.

Covid 19 and its disruption to medical services has also had a big impact and even where a practice still offers the service patients can be sitting on a waiting list for weeks. In some cases people are referred to ENT at a hospital and then the wait can extend to months and puts pressure on what are already overstretched NHS services.

At Sofina Ear Care I am delighted to be able to offer you this private service for earwax removal. I use my 30 years experience as a hospital-based audiologist to provide Microsuction, irrigation and instrumentation ear wax removal at my clinic room in the village of Fulstow which is easily accessible from Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Louth and surrounding areas.

Patients are seen in a comfortable, accessible private consultation room with ample free parking directly outside. Everyone receives a detailed consultation regarding their ear health and are then offered ear wax removal and/or hearing tests as appropriate. Before and after photos are taken so people can see the improvement

as well as feel it!

A flat fee for wax removal is charged whether one or both ears need clearing. I do not sell hearing aids and I am not affiliated with any other company. I continue to do NHS work in Audiology. You can be confident that any information or advice you receive from me will always be honest and impartial.

I appreciate not everyone can afford to or will want to pay for a service that used to be readily available and free on the NHS but for people wanting to have their comfort and clarity restored quickly and easily Sofina Ear Care is an accessible alternative.

As we age, our sight tends to become less clear, and some of us will develop what is known as “Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration”. When this happens, the central area of our vision darkens and becomes blurred, making it difficult to see detail, and preventing activities such as driving, reading, watching TV, using computers, tablets, and so on. Even recognising faces can prove difficult.

Until recently, there were no effective treatments for Dry AMD, the only suggestions being lifestyle changes or dietary

supplements. Now, sufferers will be delighted to learn that there is a newly developed treatment available locally. It is a safe, noninvasive, painless therapy which is fully approved under European and UK directives.

This breakthrough treatment is known as photobiomodulation (PBT) and uses a cold laser system to produce low levels of red, yellow and infra-red light to stimulate the centre of vision by energising and providing oxygen for cell repair.

Results from extensive monitored trials of the therapy show that for many Dry AMD sufferers, there can be an improvement in sharpness of vision corresponding to some 5 or 8 extra letters on the testing chart. This therapy has also been shown to help diabetics who have certain eye problems related to their diabetes.

Thinking of going electric?

HERE ARE FOUR THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BUYING YOUR FIRST ELECTRIC CAR

“While electric cars do still need annual MoT checks, as with all cars, this is generally a pain-free experience, with exhaust emissions tests being a thing of the past.”

GET SET UP FOR CHARGING

“We know that charging is the number one deterrent from people purchasing an electric vehicle – with so many different options and types, it’s no wonder!

“It’s worth doing your research and familiarising yourself with the charging process before purchasing, which may include getting a home charging point fitted. Nearly every electric car owner will find a home charging point beneficial, because charging your car overnight is the most time-effective option to ensure you’re fully charged for the day ahead – and there’s no waiting around because you and your car will be recharging your batteries overnight together.

With the electric car revolution in full swing, the number of people swapping their petrol or diesel car for an electric vehicle is increasing rapidly.

However, many people still have some uncertainties around purchasing an electric car, so a Lincoln car retailer is providing their top tips to debunk the myths and help drivers figure out what they need.

Andy McInnes, Business Manager from Stoneacre Lincoln on Lincoln Fields, said: “Lincoln drivers are welcome to drop in and speak with our expert team about purchasing their first electric car at any time, but for those too busy to visit, we’ve included our four top tips below.”

WORK OUT WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED

“It’s often easy to pick your new car based on aesthetics alone, but it’s important to make sure that the car you’re looking at fits all aspects of your lifestyle, too. Size is an important consideration – do you need a large SUV or a smaller car? Do you need plenty of space in the cabin and the boot, or is one more important than the other? It’s also vital to consider how you’ll mainly be using the car and the kinds of journeys you regularly take. Generally speaking, the larger the car, the larger the battery will be, and so this will take longer to recharge.

“If you’re someone who has a long commute to work every day, or if you regularly go on long-distance trips, you’ll definitely need to factor in a car that is smooth and comfortable to drive, efficient and has a good electric range. Many people tend to overestimate how much they actually drive – on average, the majority of people drive only around 20 miles a day*. Taking a detailed look at what you use your car for on a daily basis and observing how many miles you add each week are great ways of staying realistic with your requirements.”

BUDGET TO SPEND LESS ON MAINTENANCE

“One of the main selling points of an electric car is that maintenance is generally much simpler and cheaper than that of a petrol or diesel car. With fewer parts in an electric car, there is less to go wrong, meaning maintenance costs could be up to half the price you’re used to**.

“Thanks to regenerative braking, which in many instances uses the electric motor to help slow the car rather than the brakes themselves, the brakes on your new car will be exposed to less wear and tear, meaning they won’t need to be replaced as often**.

“Chances are, if you buy an electric car, at some point you’ll need to use public charging spots, too. To save yourself getting caught out, it’s a good idea to look at the different public charging facilities available and get to grips with them–there are roughly 42,000 public charging points in the UK**, so have a look at downloading charging provider apps and getting yourself set up now, so you’ll be ready when you need them.”

KNOW YOUR BUDGET

“Making sure you have a good idea of your available budget is incredibly important – that way, we as retailers can help you find the most suitable, affordable option for you, and you know your limits.

“Don’t be put off by the initial upfront cost of an electric vehicle – electric cars tend to cost slightly more to purchase than a petrol or diesel car, but the costs of running are much lower, with the likes of fuel, tax and maintenance being much cheaper***.”

We have also done an incredible amount for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, managing to raise over £10,500 for them in 2022 and £4,000 for them, so far, in 2023. We’ve achieved this through our infamous open weekends that we hold for our customers three times a year, by organising raffles, silent auctions and bake sales. We’ve also had a Camper UK team partaking in Lincoln 10K in recent years which was a challenge for all of us especially Jeremy, our Aftersales technical advisor, who completed the race in his wheelchair, but for this charity, it was worth it.

We’ve also collaborated with Eastenders stars, SHANE RICHIE and ADAM WOODYATT, who have not only bought motorhomes from us, but have continued to support us in getting the word out about Camper UK!

We decided to enter the Lincolnshire Business of the Year Awards in 2022 after being encouraged by our bank and customers, not expecting much. So, we were pleasantly surprised to be shortlisted for two awards: Education, Training and Skills and the Business Person of the Year Award, nominating our MD, Dean.

We were runners up for our Training Academy with Dean managing to win his category, as he ensured that Camper UK would remain a ‘great place to work’ by empowering employees to have their say.

However, we were ecstatic that we managed to win overall, despite being up against many excellent organisations, making us the Lincolnshire Business of the Year 2022!
