YEAR - £30.00 (inc. postage)

Work has started on converting five units in Freshney Place Shopping Centre into a bespoke Community Diagnostic Centre that will help to transform healthcare in North East Lincolnshire.

Once complete, the centre will offer around 150,000 additional diagnostic appointments a year to patients at a convenient, central location, rather than travelling to a hospital site.

Due to open to patients in autumn this year, it will be able to offer a range of services, including ophthalmology, non-obstetric ultrasounds and a mix of pathological and physiological tests, such as ECGs and X Rays.

GPs will be able to refer patients to a centre, which are not only more convenient for patients but are also more efficient for staff and free up clinicians’ time to help further cut NHS waiting lists.

Now the demolition phase is underway and details of the plans are on display within the shopping centre, Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Philip Jackson and Deputy Leader Cllr Stan Shreeve, who is also the Portfolio Holder with responsibilities for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care, joined NHS project leads for a tour of the facility.

They were guided around the site (pictured) by Ivan McConnell, Group Director Strategy and Partnership at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; Mark Edgar, the Trust’s Associate Director of Estates Projects; and Helen Kenyon, North East Lincolnshire Place Director for Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB).

Mr McConnell said: “It’s been a pleasure to take Cllr Jackson and Cllr Shreeve around the site today and explain more about our exciting plans for the site.

“It was also great to see so many members of the public stopping to read our information boards and find out more about the benefits this new centre will provide.

“Having this new facility and the capacity to conduct so many additional tests will be incredibly beneficial to the health of people across the area, as it will help us to detect and treat serious conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and respiratory conditions.”

Cllr Shreeve said: “As a council, we are delighted to

STEVE MCQUEEN’S ICONIC GREAT ESCAPE MOTORBIKE TO BE ON SHOW AT THE IBCC

STEVE McQueen’s iconic motorbike from ‘The Great Escape’ is being loaned to the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln for the 80th anniversary of the escape attempt on which the film is based

The 1963 film recounts the daring escape attempt of 76 allied airmen POWs from the German prison camp Stalag Luft III on 24 March 1944. All but three of the escapees were recaptured and, 50 of the airmen were summarily executed. Of these, 28 were members of Bomber Command and are remembered on the IBCC’s Memorial walls.

To pay tribute to those men, on Sunday 19 May the IBCC is hosting its annual InSpire Ride2024, a charity fundraising event that welcomes hundreds of bikers every year.

One of the most iconic scenes in the ‘The Great Escape’ – and in cinema as a whole – is Steve McQeen jumping a 12ft high wall of barbed wire on a Triumph

see this development start and cannot wait to come back at stages during the development in the coming weeks and months.

“As the owners of Freshney Place, the council is extremely supportive of this. It will bring health care closer to the people, with thousands of residents within our communities having easier access to vital care. This is extremely important when we look at our priorities of working with partners to improve people’s health and wellbeing in the long-term.

“The new CDC also helps the council to realise its vision of supporting retail in Freshney Place and the wider town centre with a number of diverse leisure and community uses, which will drive footfall and help to create social and community hubs,” added Cllr Shreeve.

TR6 650 Special. This year, the IBCC has announced the same Triumph used in this scene has been loaned to InSpire Ride2024 to commemorate the escape’s 80th anniversary.

Nicky van der Drift, chief executive of the IBCC, said: “The Great Escape film is a classic piece of cinema that brings to life and has immortalised the incredible feat of bravery, hardship, and determination in the face of adversity, that the POWs of Stalag Luft III endured.

“For the escape’s 80th anniversary, we’re thrilled to have Steve McQueen’s motorbike on display for our visitors to come and take photos with. However, we’ll also have

plenty else on the day to remember, recognise, and reconcile the sacrifice of those who lost their lives.

“All proceeds from InSpire Ride2024 will go directly back into funding the IBCC’s heritage preservation, education and outreach programmes, and we’re grateful for your support.”

CHILDREN AND VOLUNTEERS GET BUSY ACROSS THE BOROUGH WITH ‘GREENING UP OUR PLACE’

AS PART of the Greening Up Our Place project, launched by North East Lincolnshire Council in late 2023, a total of 12 children joined volunteers from the local community, Equans and NELC staff, and participants from All Things Good and Nice CIC to plant a number of trees in the Haverstoe Ward.

With fine, if chilly, weather, the team met at Haverstoe Park before venturing out to Taylor’s Avenue where they dug holes and planted “Hornbeam Frans Fontaine” trees in spaces along the busy street. It was hard work at times, as the trees are already a good size, but the team did a fantastic job before being joined by children from Signhills Primary Academy to plant cherry trees in Haverstoe Park.

A local resident, who has lived in the area since the Fifties, commented: “There used to be many trees along here, but they have mostly disappeared over time. It is a good idea to be planting new trees; it gives it character.

“It is supposed to be an avenue, which is a street full of trees, and there has definitely been a lack of them so it’s nice to see them go back.”

James Elliott, also known as the Canoe River Cleaner and director of All Things Good and Nice CIC, said: “It is great to be able to support the project.

As a group that uses nature to ‘educate and stimulate’ we have a good following and an extensive local network. This enables us to use platforms such as social media to ask for volunteers to come to events like this, to help plant the trees.

“It is really important that we increase tree coverage and recognise the science behind them. They reduce pollution by taking in carbon dioxide, which is ideal when next to a busy road, and they have a positive effect on wellbeing.”

Dee Hitter, Head of Environmental Sustainability at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “The overall event has been a huge success, and the trees look great. We were stopped by various visitors to the park who were all very pleased with the efforts, and keen to discuss species of trees being planted and our wider planting ambitions. They were all very complementary about the inclusion of school children, who all did a brilliant job.

“It is important that we continue to involve local school children and young people’s groups to inform and educate them about the value of trees. The trees we are planting today will be theirs to cherish and nurture tomorrow.”

Also taking place across town recently was a tree planting event at Springfield Lodge Montessori Day Nursery and Pre School, in Scartho. The nursery runs a Forest School as a part of their programme, using a piece of land near to their premises to teach the children more about the environment. The children helped plant and water five wild cherry trees and a sycamore tree.

Cllr Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, commented: “It is wonderful that so many people are getting involved with Greening Up Our Place, including children and young people across the borough.

“Trees are hugely important for our environment, helping to reduce flooding and taking in carbon dioxide (CO2). They are also good for nature around us, creating habitats for birds and insects, and are excellent for our wellbeing.

“This is an excellent scheme for the whole community, and we look forward to watching these trees grow and flourish.”

Greening Up Our Place is a part of the Tree Strategy, which underpins the council’s commitment to caring for trees under its management and increasing the number of trees in public places. The strategy is supported by the Forestry Commission’s Local Authority Treescapes Fund and Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF), which will be used to support our tree planting efforts in 2023/24 and 2024/25. Greening Up Our Place aims to restore trees within our streets, parks and open spaces, and increase canopy cover within the borough.

Other wards seeing additional planting during the coming weeks are West Marsh, Sidney Sussex, Immingham, Park, and Heneage.

WITHAM ‘N’ BLUES: IT ALL COMES OUT IN THE WASH

Stand-Out New Novel Exploring The Humorous History Of Musical Influence In Lincolnshire.

Published on 26th March 2024, Witham ‘n’ Blues: It All Comes Out In The Wash delves into the life of Professor Otis K Spanner III, an American academic on a mission to discover England’s second largest county, Lincolnshire. The Professor of Comparative Anthropology, based for a year at the University of Lindum, seizes the opportunity to explore the undiscovered musical heritage.

Mike Murphy delves, quick-witted, into the rich musical history of Lincolnshire, his home county, taking a satirical exploration through the hidden culture and music whilst expertly drawing similarities between sleepy Lincolnshire and Otis’ home state of Alabama, calling upon his own experience of both Lincolnshire and The South of the United States. Despite being divided by an ocean, both places suffer the same fate as forgotten and neglected cultural hubs.

Combining fiction, fact, and a great many puns to create a humorous insight into Lincolnshire and all its quirks, Witham ‘n’ Blues: It All Comes Out In The Wash is a must read for lovers of music, comedy and Lincolnshire alike.

REVIEWS:

“The punning and musical gags are relentless, more than living up to the puntastic title.” - Dr Oliver Double, cofounder of The British Stand-Up Comedy Archive

“A hugely inventive romp through the cultural heritage of Brassica Land. Murphy’s ‘Witham ‘n’ Blues’ is a delightful montage of hilarious set-pieces and witty word-play. (Warning: Can cause apundicitis if read too quickly).”

Rylands-Bolton, author of Trying Times for Sebastian Scattergood

BLURB:

“This was exactly what Otis was coming to love about Lincolnshire – its infinite capacity to surprise. Its very ordinariness hid the most remarkable secrets; you only needed to know where to look.”

Witham ‘n’ Blues follows Professor Otis Spanner, an expert in music and culture from the University of Toscahonee, Alabama, who has somehow managed to acquire a research grant to study the little-known English county of Lincolnshire. As he explores the curious customs and musical mysteries hidden in the depths of the Lincolnshire countryside, Otis discovers some remarkable secrets that well and truly put Lincolnshire on the map.

Humour runs riot in this delightful exploration of the music, history and other-worldly quirks of England’s second largest county. Artfully mixing elements of truth with a host of fictional (and not so fictional) characters, Witham ‘n’ Blues is a must read for lovers of music, comedy and Lincolnshire alike.

The author says:

“I was fascinated by the fact that so few people in the UK seem to know where exactly Lincolnshire is. The county has some remarkable connections with some great popular music. It is a large, but sparsely populated area of England , very much off the

beaten track. Even today, the county’s brightest young people attend a network of small grammar schools, go off to university, often never to return, finding fame and fortune, or at least a better paying job in the larger cities. People like Isaac Newton, Tennyson, Margaret Thatcher, Rod “Thriller” Temperton, Jim Broadbent, Robert Webb and Bernie Taupin come to mind. There must be a sizeable Lincolnshire diaspora in London and other populous cities, this book is partly written for them, and now that Lincolnshire has its own universities, the book should also appeal to those who now ‘dip in’ to the county for their higher education studies.”

Published by Cranthorpe Millner Publishers, Witham ‘n’ Blues: It All Comes Out In The Wash (ISBN: 978-1-80378-195-2) is published on 26th March 2024 in paperback (£8.99) and Kindle format.

Available from Waterstones | Amazon | Cranthorpe Millner and all other major retailers

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Mike has always been attracted to forgotten places, because they all have stories to tell, and Lincolnshire (where he has lived and worked for the last 50 years), is no exception. He worked for a while in the US South, and kept noticing similarities of perception, and wanted to convey that in his book by using a protagonist from the southern US. Mike thinks Lincolnshire is a remarkable place and that more people need to know its secrets and visit to see for themselves. (https://www.mikemurphyauthor.com/)

Great tea all wrapped up in the paper compostable bags that we are becoming so well known for.”

Susie since we both started our businesses and love their ethos, the quality of their products and their commitment to sustainability. As consummate tea drinkers, the Wrendale kitchen is already well stocked with Lincoln Tea and Coffee breakfast tea and we are all looking forward to enjoying a cup of the Woodland Blend with a slice of cake as well.”

With an ADVANCED Eye Examination being much more than a new pair of spectacles or contact lenses, the practice has invested in the most advanced diagnostic technology so early changes in the eye can be detected, long before there are any obvious symptoms: this allows for early treatment and better results. Easter ‘in an eggshell’

THE HISTORY AND TRADITIONS OF A SPRING FESTIVAL

Easter, a joyous celebration observed by billions of people around the world, is steeped in history, tradition, and symbolism. From its ancient origins to modern-day customs, Easter holds a special place in the hearts of many, marking the renewal of life, hope, and faith. Let’s delve into the fascinating history of Easter, explore some cherished traditions, and discover meaningful gift ideas to share with loved ones during this festive season.

The origins of Easter can be traced back to ancient pagan festivals celebrating the arrival of spring and the renewal of life. In many cultures, these celebrations included rituals honoring fertility deities and symbols such as eggs and rabbits, which represented new life and abundance.

With the spread of Christianity, Easter became intertwined with the story of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, death, and resurrection. According to Christian tradition, Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and rose from the dead three days later, on Easter Sunday, symbolizing victory over sin and death.

Early Christians adopted many of the customs and symbols associated with spring festivals, infusing them with new meaning to reflect the spiritual significance of Easter. Over time, Easter evolved into one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays in the Christian calendar, marked by religious services, feasting, and the exchange of gifts.

EASTER TRADITIONS:

Easter is celebrated in diverse ways around the world, with each culture adding its own unique customs and traditions to the festivities. Some of the most common Easter traditions include:

EASTER EGGS:

The tradition of decorating eggs dates back to ancient times when eggs were seen as symbols of fertility and rebirth. Today, Easter eggs are often dyed or painted in vibrant colors and hidden for children to find during Easter egg hunts. Easter Bunny: The Easter Bunny, a beloved symbol of Easter, is said to deliver eggs and treats to children on Easter Sunday. This tradition originated in Germany and was brought to America by German immigrants in the 18th century. Easter Sunday Services: For Christians, Easter Sunday is a time of worship and reflection, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Churches around the world hold special services, including sunrise vigils, hymns, and prayers. Easter Feast: Easter is a time for feasting and fellowship, with families and friends coming together to share a festive meal. Traditional Easter foods vary from region to region but often include roast lamb, ham, hot cross buns, and spring vegetables.

GIFTS FOR EASTER:

When it comes to Easter gifts, there are plenty of thoughtful and meaningful options to choose from. Whether you’re looking for something sweet, sentimental, or practical, here are a few gift ideas to inspire you: Easter Baskets: Fill a decorative basket with an assortment of treats, such as chocolates, candies, and cookies, along with small toys, books, or games for children to enjoy. Personalised Gifts: Consider giving personalized gifts, such as engraved jewelry, monogrammed items, or custom-made keepsakes, to add a special touch to your Easter celebrations. Spring Flowers: Brighten someone’s day with a bouquet of fresh spring flowers, such as tulips, daffodils, or lilies, symbolizing the beauty and renewal of the season. DIY Crafts: Get creative and make your own Easter gifts, such as handmade cards, painted eggs, or homemade baked goods, to show your loved ones how much you care. Religious Symbols: For those celebrating the religious significance of Easter, consider giving gifts that reflect their faith, such as a Bible, cross pendant, or religious artwork.

Easter is a time of joy, hope, and renewal, marked by cherished traditions and meaningful rituals. Whether you’re gathering with family and friends, attending religious services, or exchanging gifts, Easter offers an opportunity to celebrate life’s blessings and share love and happiness with those around us.

Queen Ethelburga’s College and Faculty Schools ARE NAMED THE SUNDAY TIMES TOP 2 SCHOOLS FOR A LEVELS IN YORK

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) are celebrating after QE College placed 2nd in The Sunday Times Parent Power 2023 national school league tables for A Level performance and 17th for overall academic performance; whilst QE College and QE Faculty placed 1st and 2nd in York and 1st and 3rd in the North for A Level performance in the same publication.

This means that QE College retains the title of The Sunday Times Top School in the North for Academic Performance for a third consecutive year along with its position as the top school in York for academic results, with QE Faculty also flying high and cementing its place as the premier northern independent school for students wishing to pursue a personalised curriculum to the highest possible standards.

Principal, Dan Machin, said of the result, “We are extremely proud of all of the achievements for our students in both our senior schools. Offering the choice of provision in QE Faculty and QE College provides students with the chance to excel in whichever route suits them best, and the results speak for themselves in justifying this approach over nearly 20 years since QE Faculty was originally established. To be placed as the top two schools in York for academic performance at A Level is incredible and shows a dedication to excellence by both students and staff.”

Head of QE College, Steven Turner, said of the result, “We are absolutely delighted that the College has been recognised as the Independent Secondary School of the Year in the North for Academic Performance for the third consecutive year. This prestigious award is a testament to the incredible hard work of our diverse and ambitious students, the dedication of our talented staff, and the support of our parent community.

Head of QE Faculty, Lauren Blakeley, commented on their performance, “ I am very proud of what our students have achieved. To be placed 7th in the North of England for overall academic performance is a remarkable accomplishment and something for all students, parents and staff to be immensely proud of. We see the talent and ability of our students every day, but it is fantastic to see their efforts reflected in this accolade. In QE Faculty, we are lucky to have the flexibility to shape each students’ curriculum around their learning styles, interests and aspirations and I believe this has led to these fantastic results because often the most successful students are the happiest ones. I am confident that we will continue to build on this year’s success as Faculty students and staff continue to work together to improve.”

QE is a co-educational independent boarding school based just outside of York on a rural estate of over 220 acres. With such a wonderful programme of immersive events and experiences lined up, there’s even more opportunities to step into the grounds of this beautiful landmark, with stunning light displays and various exhibits shining new light on the magnificent structure.

As well as the variety of upcoming events at Lincoln Cathedral, numerous tours are offered, so you can learn even more about the cathedral and even climb its remarkable towers, to see panoramic views across the city and beyond.

Just a stone’s throw from the cathedral, you can also step inside 11th Century, Lincoln Castle, and discover 1000 years of history. You’ll find the chance to scale the heights of the Medieval Wall Walk, follow in the footsteps of prisoners in the Victorian Prison and immerse yourself in the story of the Magna Carta.

As well as Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle, Lincoln Medieval Bishops’ Palace will be re-opening from Saturday 23rd March, offering a unique contemporary Heritage Garden, a haven of peace and tranquillity, nestled within the ancient city and providing sweeping views across the city and countryside, as well as an insight into the history of what was once one of the most important buildings in the country – it’s architecture reflecting enormous power and wealth.

Discover Lincolnshire Weekend makes a great time to visit these attractions and plenty of others too, with Lincoln Castle offering free taster tours and the cathedral offering half price admission, alongside many other restaurants, bars and more, within the city, providing special offers and discounts! You can learn more about Lincoln’s aviation heritage at the International Bomber Command Centre. Here, you will find the Memorial Spire and Wall of Names. The Spire commands stunning views across Lincoln, with a focus on the cathedral, which served as a sighting point for crews flying from Lincolnshire – for many of the men named on the walls, the cathedral was the last sighting point of Britain. Notably, the base of The Spire is 16ft (5m) wide at the base, the width of a Lancaster wing.

Looking a little further ahead, in August, you can experience four days of creativity, imagination and fun at the ‘Weekend at the Asylum’ Lincoln Steampunk Festival – the largest steampunk festival in the world and a highlight of the city’s events calendar. “Weekend at the Asylum” takes its name from its first venue in the city, The Lawn, originally a lunatic asylum serving the city and county. Steampunk re-imagines our Victorian past, adding in modern values and a splash of science fiction.

Alongside history inspired events and opportunities to explore heritage sites from fresh perspectives, sports events and celebrations of rural Lincolnshire are also set to take place. Lincoln’s world-famous Rapha Grand Prix & Sportive is returning for another year, on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May, for its 68th edition. The steep hills of the cobbled Cathedral Quarter offer an exciting and challenging route for hundreds of cycling enthusiasts.

On Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th June, The Lincolnshire Show will be a true celebration of all things Lincolnshire, bringing agriculture, farming, and heritage, together with local produce, food and drink, arts, and crafts. The show also honours Lincolnshire’s rich aviation heritage. With all this to encounter, Lincoln’s events calendar and key attractions within the city make for a brilliant day out, accompanied by a fantastic offering of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. With so many independent spots, local producers and diverse events, Lincoln’s city draws together a true sense of community and celebration in the land of yellowbellies. Navigating the Legal Landscape: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE

TO ESSENTIAL LEGAL SERVICES

In the realm of personal and familial affairs, legal services play a vital role in safeguarding interests, ensuring clarity, and providing peace of mind. From the delicate intricacies of pre-nuptial agreements to the solemn responsibilities of wills and guardianship, individuals often find themselves grappling with a multitude of legal considerations.

We delve into the nuanced domains of pre-nuptials, family loan agreements, wills, guardianship, and protective trusts for children from previous relationships, offering insights into their significance and the intricacies involved.

Pre-nuptial Agreements: Safeguarding Assets and Interests

Pre-nuptial agreements, commonly referred to as prenups, have become increasingly prevalent in modern marriages. These legal documents establish the financial and property rights of each spouse in the event of divorce or death. While once stigmatised, prenups are now recognised as practical tools for asset protection and delineating financial responsibilities. They can address various issues, including property division, spousal support, and inheritance rights, thus mitigating potential conflicts and uncertainties in the future.

However, drafting a prenuptial agreement requires careful consideration and negotiation. Each party must fully disclose their assets and liabilities, and the agreement should be executed well in advance of the wedding to ensure its validity. Additionally, state laws may impose specific requirements regarding enforceability, necessitating the involvement of experienced legal counsel to navigate these complexities and tailor the agreement to the unique circumstances of the couple.

Family Loan Agreements: Preserving Relationships and Financial Stability

Intra-family loans are often extended to support loved ones during times of need or to facilitate significant life events such as purchasing a home or funding education. However, without proper documentation, such transactions can strain familial relationships and lead to misunderstandings or disputes.

Family loan agreements formalise the terms of the loan, including repayment schedules, interest rates, and any collateral involved. By delineating these details in a legally binding contract, both parties are protected, and potential conflicts are pre-emptively addressed. Moreover, family loan agreements can have significant implications for estate planning and asset distribution, making them essential components of a

ALL WILLS AND TRUSTS specialise in dealing with the intricacies of pre-nuptials, family loan agreements, wills, guardianship and protective trusts for children from previous relationships. etc.

comprehensive financial strategy.

Wills: Ensuring Testamentary Intent and Asset Distribution

A will is perhaps one of the most fundamental legal documents, yet it is often overlooked or postponed until later stages in life. However, regardless of age or wealth, having a valid will is crucial for ensuring that one’s assets are distributed according to their wishes upon death.

In the absence of a will, state intestacy laws govern the distribution of assets, which may not align with the decedent’s preferences. Moreover, wills allow individuals to designate guardians for minor children, establish trusts, and make charitable bequests, thereby providing clarity and guidance to loved ones during a challenging time.

Crafting a will requires careful consideration of various factors, including family dynamics, tax implications, and asset complexity. Consulting with an experienced estate planning attorney can help individuals navigate these considerations and create a comprehensive will that reflects their testamentary intent.

Guardianship: Protecting the Welfare of Minor Children

Designating a guardian for minor children is a critical aspect of estate planning, yet it is often overshadowed by discussions of asset distribution. In the event of the parents’ death or incapacity, a court-appointed guardian assumes responsibility for the care and upbringing of the children, making this decision of paramount importance.

When selecting a guardian, factors such as parental values, lifestyle, and familial relationships should be considered to ensure the best interests of the children are upheld. Additionally, individuals may choose to establish standby guardianship provisions or nominate successor guardians to provide contingency plans in case the primary guardian is unable to fulfill their duties.

Protective Trusts

for Children from Previous Relationships: Balancing Financial Security and Family Harmony

Blended families present unique estate planning challenges, particularly concerning the equitable treatment of children from previous relationships. Protective trusts offer a viable solution by allowing individuals to safeguard assets for their biological children while ensuring the financial security of their current spouse or partner.

These trusts can be structured in various ways, such as lifetime discretionary trusts or testamentary trusts established within a will. By placing assets in trust, individuals retain control over their distribution and can specify how and when funds are to be disbursed to beneficiaries. This flexibility enables parents to provide for their children’s needs while maintaining harmony within the blended family dynamic.

Legal services encompass a broad spectrum of essential tools and documents aimed at safeguarding individuals’ interests, preserving familial relationships, and providing clarity in times of uncertainty. Whether navigating the complexities of pre-nuptial agreements, drafting wills, or establishing protective trusts, seeking guidance from experienced legal professionals is paramount to ensuring that one’s intentions are accurately reflected and legally upheld. By addressing these critical aspects proactively, individuals can attain peace of mind knowing that their affairs are in order and their loved ones are protected.

Thinking of going electric in 2024?

HERE ARE FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BUYING YOUR FIRST ELECTRIC CAR

With the electric car revolution in full swing and only set to get bigger in 2024, the number of people swapping their petrol or diesel car for an electric vehicle is increasing rapidly.

Yet, despite predictions that electric vehicles will account for 25% of all new passenger car sales in the UK in 2024, many people still have some niggling uncertainties around purchasing an electric car. To answer these questions, a Stoneacre Lincoln car retailer is providing their top tips to debunk the myths and help drivers figure out exactly what they need to charge ahead with their first EV.

Andy McInnes, Business Manager from Stoneacre Lincoln on Lincoln Fields, said: “Lincoln drivers are welcome to drop in and speak with our expert team about purchasing their first electric car at any time, but for those too busy to visit, we’ve included our five top tips to help you start the new year off in the right gear.”

1. WORK OUT WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED

“It’s often easy to pick your new car based on aesthetics alone, but it’s important to make sure that the car you’re looking at fits all aspects of your lifestyle, too. Size is an important consideration. Do you need plenty of space in the cabin and the boot, or is one more important than the other? Generally speaking, the larger the car, the larger the battery will be, and so this will take longer to recharge.

“If you’re someone who has a long commute to work every day, or if you regularly go on long-distance trips, you’ll definitely need to factor in a car that is smooth and comfortable to drive, efficient and has a good electric range. Many people tend to overestimate how much they actually drive – on average, the majority of people drive only around 20 miles a day. Taking a detailed look at what you use your car for on a daily basis and observing how many miles you add each week are great ways of staying realistic with your requirements.”

2.

BUDGET TO SPEND LESS ON MAINTENANCE

“One of the main selling points of an electric car is that maintenance is generally much simpler and cheaper than that of a petrol or diesel car. With fewer moving parts in an electric car, there is less to go wrong, meaning maintenance costs could be up to half the price you’re used to.

“Thanks to regenerative braking, which in many instances uses the electric motor to help slow the car rather than the brakes themselves, the brakes on your new car will be exposed to less wear and tear, meaning they won’t need to be replaced as often.

“While electric cars do still need annual MoT checks, as with all cars, this

is generally a pain-free experience, with exhaust emissions tests being a thing of the past.”

3. GET SET UP FOR CHARGING

“We know that charging is the number one deterrent from people purchasing an electric vehicle – with so many different options and types, it’s no wonder!

“It’s worth doing your research and familiarising yourself with the charging process before purchasing, which may include getting a home charging point fitted. Nearly every electric car owner will find a home charging point beneficial, because charging your car overnight is the most time-effective option to ensure you’re fully charged for the day ahead – and there’s no waiting around because you and your car will be recharging your batteries overnight together.

“Chances are, if you buy an electric car, at some point you’ll need to use public charging spots, too. To save yourself getting caught out, it’s a good idea to look at the different public charging facilities available and get to grips with them – there are almost 54,000 public charging points in the UK, so have a look at downloading charging provider apps so you’ll be ready when you need them.”

4. KNOW YOUR BUDGET

“Making sure you have a good idea of your available budget is incredibly important – that way, we as retailers can help you find the most suitable, affordable option for you, and you know your limits.

“Don’t be put off by the initial upfront cost of an electric vehicle – electric cars tend to cost slightly more to purchase than a petrol or diesel car, but the costs of running are much lower, with the likes of fuel, tax and maintenance being much cheaper.”

5. GO TO SEE THE CAR IN PERSON

“We would always recommend popping into your local retailer to have a thorough look at the car you’re considering – whether you’re certain you know what you want, or you’re stuck between a couple of options, it’s a great way to make sure you’re confident in your decision.

“We strongly believe that buying a new car should be an exciting time, not a stressful one, and so looking forward to getting 2024 off to an electrifying start!”

“Take Charge of Your Safety”

TYRESAFE URGES ELECTRIC VEHICLE DRIVERS TO CHECK TYRES DURING CHARGING BREAKS

This crucial period, often filled with scrolling on phones, grabbing a sandwich, or dozing in the front seat, presents an opportunity that could be life-saving if used to ensure tyre safety.

The A.C.T acronym - Air, Condition, Tread - provides simple yet effective guidance on checks that can be done without specialist equipment. By taking just a few minutes to inspect their tyres, drivers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and breakdowns.

This initiative comes as part of a partnership between TyreSafe and PCL, the global leader in the design and manufacture of tyre inflation and compressed air products. PCL, long-standing supporters of TyreSafe, are joining forces to emphasise the importance of tyre safety, especially in the growing community of electric vehicle drivers and owners.

“We are thrilled to partner with PCL in urging electric vehicle drivers to ‘take charge’ of their safety,” said Stuart Lovatt, Chairman of TyreSafe. “The time spent waiting for a battery to charge is a prime opportunity to conduct simple tyre checks that could prevent incidents and save lives. The A.C.T acronym is an easy guide for drivers to follow, ensuring their tyres are properly inflated, in good condition, and have adequate tread depth.”

PCL, recognised for its innovative tyre inflation products seen on garage forecourts, tyre shops, factories, and workshops worldwide, is committed

to promoting safe driving practices.

Claire Tonks, Business Development Manager at PCL said; “When tyres are not correctly inflated, braking performance is affected, which can lead to dangerous, even fatal, situations. This applies to all vehicles, including EVs. Accurate inflation also extends tyre lifespan, significantly so with EVs, and checking pressure and tread takes just 10 minutes. The ideal time for drivers to do this would be whilst waiting for their car to charge. Sadly, the majority EV stations are not offering an inflation service with full Air, Water and Screen wash provision. This would not only boost their own station revenue, but would also encourage vital, cost saving maintenance checks that could prevent accidents.”

TyreSafe and PCL are urging all electric vehicle drivers to remember the A.C.T acronym during their charging breaks:

A for Air: Ensure tyres are inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure.

C for Condition: Check for any cuts, bulges, or other signs of damage on the tyre’s sidewalls.

T for Tread: Make sure the tyre tread meets the minimum legal requirement of 1.6mm and consider changing tyres if tread depth is nearing this limit.

By incorporating these checks into their routine, electric vehicle drivers can contribute to safer roads for all.

For more information on tyre safety and the A.C.T acronym, visit www.tyresafe.org
