A LINCOLNSHIRE SUCCESS STORY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

Lincolnshire’s own Camper UK, founded by Dean Hyde in 2004, has become a foundation of the local motorhome and campervan industry. Dean, who began his career in the parts department of a local motorhome dealer, recognised a crucial gap in the market for reliable aftersales service.

Many customers felt neglected once they had purchased their vehicles. In response, Dean, along with his father Paul Hyde and friend Alan Pickering, launched Camper UK, opening their first premises on the outskirts of Lincoln later that year.

The company quickly made its mark, winning Lincolnshire’s Young Business of the Year award. Camper UK’s reputation for excellence reached European motorhome manufacturers, including Burstner, which sought their services to reduce the logistical costs of repairs. Today, Camper UK boasts one of the largest Burstner workshops in Europe, further solidifying its standing in the industry.

Over the years, Camper UK has grown into a comprehensive service provider, featuring a 27-bay, Fiat-accredited, NCC-approved workshop. The company offers new and used vehicle sales, servicing, parts, and accessories, achieving an impressive annual turnover nearing £30 million. In 2010, responding

to customer desires, they opened a leisure park in the Lincolnshire countryside. This park, with its serene lake, glamping pods, and luxury lodges, allows customers to experience motorhome living even before they make a purchase.

Camper UK is not only committed to customer satisfaction but also to nurturing new talent. Recognising the recruitment challenges in the industry, Dean spearheaded the creation of the Leisure Vehicle Engineer Academy in collaboration with local colleges. This innovative programme provides hands-on learning experiences, ensuring a well-trained workforce for the future. The academy includes a dedicated classroom with appliances used as test rigs, giving students practical experience in plumbing, gas, and electrical systems.

Despite facing setbacks, including a devastating fire in 2014, the resilient team at Camper UK rebuilt stronger than ever. This

close-knit, family-run business has thrived, with Dean’s wife, son, and nephew playing active roles. Their collective efforts have maintained the company’s momentum and continued its growth.

As Camper UK celebrates its 20th anniversary, the team is marking the milestone with Roaring Twenties-themed open weekends and fundraising efforts for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. The celebrations will bring together customers, friends, suppliers, and staff to honour this significant achievement. Looking ahead, Dean remains optimistic, confident in his strong team and their ability to navigate industry challenges.

Camper UK’s journey from a local startup to a leading motorhome service provider is a testament to visionary leadership, community values, and unwavering dedication. Here’s to another 20 years of success and innovation in Lincolnshire!

LEAVING FATHERLAND

Poignant New Second World War Novel Explores Abusive Pasts and the Search For Identity

Published on 20th August 2024, Matt Graydon’s Leaving Fatherland is a poignant tale of discovering one’s true identity that provides a unique take on what it was like to be in the Luftwaffe during the Second World War.

This year, the UK celebrates the memory of the Normandy landings, a huge turning point in WW2. But 2024 also marks another wartime anniversary – it is 80 years since the arrival of the first German Prisoners of War to Brigg’s Pingley Camp in Lincolnshire. Werner Doehr, a Luftwaffe Ju-88 camera operator, shot down by the RAF in the North African desert, later arrived at Pingley following a fouryear incarceration in a Canadian PoW camp, and it is his story that inspired his nephew, Matt Graydon, to write Leaving Fatherland, his debut novel.

Blurb:

Oskar Bachmann always imagined that giving his first lecture would be the defining moment of his life. It was, but not in the way he expected… Growing up a misfit in Nazi Germany, a victim of his father’s beatings, Oskar’s love of books is a constant comfort in a world turned upsidedown by violence.

As a student, as a pilot in the brutal Luftwaffe during the Second World War, in an unhappy marriage to an English bride, he finds himself returning over and over to the circumstances of his childhood. What was the source and cause of his father’s abuse? Could there have been more to it than he had once believed?

Little did Oskar know that his first lecture at the University of Tübingen would ultimately lead to the end of a lifetime of searching… and finally reveal the figure who had been controlling his life from a distance.

Advance reviews:

“A well-researched WWII novel that tackles compelling questions of family loyalty and broader ethics.” - KIRKUS

“A family drama which plays out across continents during and after World War Two. A novel with real honesty and depth, a great debut.”

- IAIN MACGREGOR, AUTHOR OF CHECKPOINT CHARLIE AND RENOWNED HISTORIAN

“A cleverly researched and poignantly told tale with a fascinating angle on WW2 that will provoke and intrigue readers right to the end.”

- ANNA STUART, AUTHOR OF THE MIDWIFE OF AUSCHWITZ

“A novel that explores, with compassion and without judgement, complex issues around psychology, identity, loyalty, and how knowing where we come from shapes who we are. A thoroughly well researched and intriguing account of the psyche of pre-war, wartime and post-war Germany.”

- LOUISE FEIN, AUTHOR OF DAUGHTER OF THE REICH AND PEOPLE LIKE US

The author says:

Matt said: “The account of my Uncle Werner’s time before the war in the US and his desert air crash in WW2 had been talked about many times around our dinner table. However, no one researched the story properly. I knew it was a story I wanted to tell and had thought about it for years. When I finished my first bout of research and began writing, I realised just how challenging the task would be and how I needed to develop a deeper, more complex story to make it work as a novel. Trips to Germany and many hours of reading and watching historical footage were involved in creating the scenes in the book. I hope readers will be engaged by the world I have created.”

Published by Cranthorpe Millner Publishers, Leaving Fatherland (ISBN: 978-1-80378-209-6) is published on 20th August 2024 in paperback (£12.99) and eBook format and is available from Waterstones | Amazon | Cranthorpe Millner

ALMOST 60,000 FLOCK TO 139TH LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW

This year saw a sun-soaked two days at one of the most successful and longest-running agricultural shows in the country

Organisers have hailed this year’s Lincolnshire Show a “roaring success” as almost 60,000 people attended to celebrate Lincolnshire food, farming and countryside.

Visitors to the Show, which took place at the heart of the Lincolnshire Showground on 19th and 20th June, enjoyed a packed schedule of events and activities.

Attractions included a brand new Garden Show and beach, live music on the Bandstand and cooking demonstrations in the Lincolnshire Kitchen. Over 500 exhibitors also put on a show of their own, from local craftspeople to the county’s largest companies.

There were also 2,927 livestock and equine entries, with 50% more pigs competing at this year’s Show.

Charlotte Powell, Chief Executive of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS), said:

“We had an absolutely fantastic two days celebrating the very best of the region’s agriculture, entertainment and community

spirit - and we even had glorious sunshine which was the icing on the cake.

“The new areas at this year’s Show were a great success, with the beach being a major hit with children and parents, and the Garden Show saw some fantastic floral displays from local nurseries.

“It was such a pleasure to see so many people enjoying local produce and entertainment, too - and we’re already looking forward to our big 140th anniversary next year!”

Across the two days, visitors enjoyed 3,307 glasses of Pimms and over 18 hours of entertainment in the Main Ring. 1,200 people also travelled to and from the Show via the Stagecoach shuttle bus, and over 5,000 rosettes were awarded across the Show’s competitions.

As well as the competitions taking place across livestock, equine and horticulture, local school children took part in the LAS Schools’ Challenge. This aims to help young people gain a better understanding of Lincolnshire’s rich agricultural history,

its horticulture and land-based activities. Winners were selected across eight different categories, with schools including Queen Eleanor Primary School, Saxilby C of E Primary School and The Priory Academy LSST taking home prizes.

This year also saw the launch of the Michael Peacock Rising Talent Award, which celebrates and recognises those who are starting their careers in the agricultural industry and are already excelling. This was awarded to Bailey Elliot of Hundred Acre Farm in Boston, who received a free LAS membership and a cash prize towards training or professional resources.

The success of this year’s Lincolnshire Show underscores the LAS’ commitment to promoting agriculture, education and rural life, and next year’s Show has already been confirmed for 18th and 19th June 2025.

MAKE TIME FOR A CUPPA

In partnership with The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company & Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance

(LNAA) is inviting people to put the kettle on and ‘Make Time for a Cuppa’ by hosting a coffee morning or a tea party in support of the charity’s life-saving work.

‘Make Time for a Cuppa’ is a great opportunity to get friends, family, neighbours, colleagues or even the wider community together to catch up, have a brew, eat delicious cakes and biscuits, and make a life-saving difference to people in their communities.

Susie, Founder of The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company said: “We are proud to be supporting the work of Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. After visiting their HQ, we can’t help but feel in awe of the helicopter, doctors, paramedics, and wider team. It’s so amazing to collaborate with them on their ‘Make Time for a Cuppa’ campaign and we are delighted to be gifting free coffee bags to everyone who signs up to make a ‘cuppa’ and host an event. We are overjoyed to be making a donation from our LNAA website bundles too, so here’s to making time for a cuppa.”

In the first five months of the year, LNAA has already been tasked to 719 missions and as summer approaches the team are gearing up ready for a busy summer. But for the crew to bring the hospital to the patient, they need

to raise over £13 million this year. Hosting a ‘Make Time for a Cuppa’ event and raising money means the doctors and paramedics can continue to be by the side of the most critically ill and injured patients when they are most in need.

LNAA’s Community Fundraising Manager, Steph Bradshaw, said: “We are excited to be working with The Lincoln Tea and Coffee Company in this brandnew venture.

“Their support will help us to keep our helicopter in the skies and our critical care cars on the road, providing emergency treatment to people living and working in Lincs & Notts. This partnership with The Lincoln Tea and Coffee Company will help us raise vital funds and further grow the awareness of our work.”

The park is located centrally located between the towns of Peterborough, Stamford, Bourne and Spalding, meaning you don’t have to travel far in order to get away from it all, and to dicover a little bit of heaven by the water at Tallington Lakes.

The park is set in over 300 acres, with over 200 acres forming our lakes, meaning the vast majority of our stunning homes enjoy year round lakeside views. Its not just the stunning views that make Tallington Lakes so special its also the fact that you can live here 365 days of the year and unlike many parks can register your home as your permanent address. But the best thing of all is the people who live here and give it such a wonderful community. Indeed in excess of 90% of our home owners live here all year round.

Tallington Lakes has become a sought after park for the placement of a wide variety of desireable luxury lodges from several manufacturers, including Tingdene, Omar, Prestige and Atlas to name just a few. With prices ranging from £120,000 to just over £300,000 there really is something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Choosing your lodge comes down to personal choice and requirments. All of the homes come fully furnished, with integrated white goods in the kitchen. We’ll even build your decking and add a shed to your plot, all as part of the asking price. Indeed on moving day simply unpack your clothes and fill your kitchen cupboards, before settling down on your lakeside decking to enjoy the view. It realy is as easy as that.

Tallington Lakes is on the site of a former gravel pit which ceased commercial opperating in the 1970’s before being redeveloped as a leisure facility with spring fed lakes created on the rewilded site. In 1987 a dry ski slope was added which now has one of the most sofisticated and realistic surfaces in the country. Further leisure activities where added including a climbing tower. At the heart of the leisure facilities though is the lakes, with provision for water skiing, jet skiing, wake boarding, sailing and more recently kayaking and paddleboarding. We even offer some open water swimming sessions. All of this is made possible by the 200 plus acres of lakes.

Today Tallington Lakes leisure activities runs alongside the Goodlife Lodge Company, who help those looking for a piece of the good life to settle around the edges of the lakes. The 300 plus acres of Tallington Lakes know houses approximately 450 luxury lodges and provides a permenant home for almost 800 people.

The vast majority of the homes feature an open plan living space enjoying lakeside views with two bedrooms and bathrooms, although 3 or even on occasion 4 bedroom homes available.

Tallington Lakes has always been a popular destination for buyers, however over the last couple of years we have seen its popularity increase with the pandemic causing people to want to leave the towns and cities for a more rural and relaxing way of life.

So whether you are downsizing, looking for a UK base allowing you to travel or indeed looking for a reling family home we are certain that you will find it at Tallington Lakes. Our proffesional, dedicated sales team offer a no nonsense, no pressure approach with all of our visitors. Our philosophy is that someone will buy a home at Tallington Lakes because it is the right place for them.

If you’re curious about what Tallington Lakes has to offer and what lodge life would be like why not give the team a call on 0800 564 2266 or email info@ goodlifelodge.com and book your exclusive viewing tour of the park and the lodges.

For those looking further afield we have 3 other parks. Thorney Lakes Golf Club in Cambridgeshire, Great Hadham Country Club in Hertfordshire and Tanner Farm Park in Kent.

Local car

retailer’s

latest addition named Top Gear’s Best EV Crossover

A Lincoln car retailer is proud to announce that its latest model to go on sale has been crowned Best EV Crossover in the Topgear.com Electric Awards.

Stoneacre Lincoln on Lincoln Fields is delighted that the all-new Volvo EX30 has continued its recent awards success, despite cars only reaching UK roads this spring.

The EX30, the smallest SUV ever launched by Volvo, was applauded as being the benchmark model in its class, with a choice of fully electric powertrains, a sustainably focused design, cutting-edge technology and Volvo’s quality and safety, all at an accessible price.

Developed with a focus on efficient performance and whole-life sustainability, the EX30 has the smallest carbon footprint of any Volvo car to date. Its battery-electric powertrain provides a driving range of up to 296 miles, while using a DC power supply means it takes from just 26 minutes to charge the battery from 10 to 80% capacity.

Ollie Marriage, Head of Car Testing at Top Gear, said:

“The EX30 manages to play to Volvo’s traditional strengths, yet also pushes into new areas. It’s compact, easy to place, has just enough space inside for four and enough range to be daily usable. Outwardly it looks neat yet tough; inwardly the quality and tactility blow every other EV in the £35k bracket into the weeds.”

Andy McInnes, Business Manager at Stoneacre Lincoln, said:

“There’s a continued excitement about the EX30 since launching the car last year, which this award – in addition to the car’s growing list of honours –will only add to as drivers look for an affordable electric option to replace their current cars.

“The EX30 offers all of the premium quality, safety and sustainability associated with Volvo Cars, in a convenient, compact and keenly priced package – so it’s great to see this already being recognised by national publications.

“We welcome Lincoln drivers to visit Stoneacre Lincoln to learn more about the small but mighty EX30 and chat to our friendly team of experts.”
