FREE FILM INSTALLATION “INSIDE ODDS ON”, INSPIRED BY

DANTE OR

DIE’S MULTI-AWARD-WINNING INTERACTIVE SHORT FILM, BRINGS ONLINE GAMBLING AWARENESS TO LINCOLN

A unique and powerful film installation, Inside Odds On, is coming to Lincoln’s Waterside Shopping Centre from 26 October to 9 November 2024. This free event invites visitors to experience the impact of online gambling through immersive storytelling, film, and an exhibition. No tickets are required, making it accessible for all to engage in this thoughtprovoking experience.

Inspired by Odds On, Dante or Die’s multiaward-winning interactive short film - Inside Odds On is a deep dive into the world of online gambling and the impact gambling harm has on people’s lives. The installation will be available to the public at the Waterside Shopping Centre for two weeks. Audiences can watch the film, learn about its making, discover resources, and support information for gambling harm.

Inside Odds On is commissioned by Lincoln Arts Centre and powered by the Centre for Culture and Creativity at the University of Lincoln, a ‘think and do tank’, researching and leading cultural programmes and creativity, which secured the University’s Arts Council National Portfolio status in April 2023.

Inside Odds On is an interactive and sensory experience designed to raise awareness about

the growing impact of online gambling on individuals and communities. The installation takes place in an empty shop transformed into an underwater-themed space, enhancing the calming yet deeply impactful nature of the event. With captioned and audio-described versions available, the event is designed to be accessible to all.

This initiative is particularly significant in the context of rising online gambling addiction, an issue that affects a growing number of people across the UK. Inside Odds On seeks to educate and provoke thought about the realities of gambling harm, using storytelling and visual elements to engage the audience emotionally and intellectually. The immersive environment allows visitors to reflect on how gambling can disrupt lives while providing a space to relax and contemplate the stories shared.

“Lincoln has a proud tradition of community engagement, and we are delighted to host Inside Odds On in the heart of the city. This installation offers an opportunity for people to understand the hidden impact of online gambling in a way that is both accessible and impactful. We hope visitors will leave the installation with a greater awareness of gambling harm and how it can affect people from all walks of life,” said Mary-Jane Booth, Centre Manager at Waterside Lincoln.

“We’re very proud to have commissioned Inside Odds On and bring this project to life and Lincoln. It’s an important and socially engaged project on a subject with a particular resonance with Greater Lincolnshire communities. A huge thanks to our partners across the county, artistic practitioners, and world-class research at the university that we’ve brought into creative symbiosis.” - Ben Anderson Creative and Executive Director of Lincoln Arts Centre.

Visitors can enjoy free access to the Inside Odds On installation, and no booking is necessary. However, free time slots are available for those who wish to reserve a guaranteed spot. Simply book through the website at https:// lincolnartscentre.co.uk/event/inside-oddson/ or drop in during the event dates.

The film Odds On, featured in the installation, has garnered several awards for its innovative approach to addressing social issues. The installation in Lincoln is part of Dante or Die’s national tour aimed at raising awareness in communities across the UK.

20 YEARS OF ADVENTURE IN LINCOLNSHIRE

This year marks a special milestone for Camper UK as they celebrate 20 years of helping people explore the great outdoors.

Established in 2004 by Dean Hyde, Paul Hyde, and Alan Pickering, Camper UK started with a simple goal—putting customers first. Back then, the founders noticed that many buyers struggled to get good aftersales support, so Camper UK set out to change that.

Starting out as a dedicated aftersales service, the business quickly grew. In their first year, Camper UK won the Young Business of the Year award for Lincolnshire. This early success soon attracted the attention of leading European motorhome brands, and today Camper UK offers new and used motorhomes from well-known names like Burstner, Carthago, and Laika. Over the years, Camper UK has become one of the UK’s top dealers, known for their friendly and expert customer service.

Located just outside Lincoln, the Camper UK showroom is a must-visit for anyone in the market for a motorhome. Whether you’re looking for a compact model or something more luxurious, the spacious showroom has a wide range of motorhomes on display, so customers can explore the options and find their perfect fit. The knowledgeable staff are always on hand to offer advice, making sure every customer finds the vehicle that suits their needs.

One of the things that sets Camper UK apart is their “One Stop Shop” approach. They don’t just sell motorhomes; they offer everything from servicing and repairs to parts and accessories—all in one place. Customers even get to stay overnight at the Camper UK Leisure Park for free after purchasing a motorhome, giving them a chance to get used to their new vehicle before hitting the road.

Another big part of Camper UK’s success is their popular Leisure Park, just outside Lincoln. Opened in 2010, the park offers pitches for motorhomes, luxury lodges with hot tubs, glamping pods, and even a carp fishing pond. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing weekend away, with plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, and exploring the local countryside.

Camper UK also hosts open weekends for their customers, where they provide food, entertainment, and trips into Lincoln’s historic city centre. These events are a highlight for many of their customers, who also benefit from discounts and special offers through the exclusive Phoenix Club, which is open to anyone who buys a motorhome from Camper UK.

Looking ahead, Camper UK is excited to continue expanding their leisure park and growing their Training Academy, which helps teach the next generation of motorhome technicians. As they celebrate 20 years, Camper UK remains a family-run business, proud to support the local community and help even more people enjoy the freedom of motorhome travel.

Whether you’re new to motorhomes or a seasoned traveller, Camper UK and their showroom are ready to help you start your next adventure.

THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS

FROM GIFT IDEAS TO FINDING YOUR PERFECT TREE

As the festive season approaches, thoughts inevitably turn to the magic of Christmas. With November ushering in shorter days and colder nights, it’s the perfect time to start preparing for the most wonderful time of the year. Whether you’re thinking of Christmas gifts, planning a visit to local events, or even choosing your perfect Christmas tree, there’s plenty to keep the spirit of the season alive.

FINDING THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS GIFT

Finding the right gift can be both a pleasure and a challenge. While big-name retailers may offer convenience, there’s something special about supporting local artisans and businesses. This year, why not take a stroll through one of the many Christmas markets or craft fairs? These events are bursting with unique, handmade gifts, perfect for adding a personal touch to your Christmas list.

From handcrafted jewellery to bespoke home décor, many local vendors offer treasures that are truly one of a kind. Not only will you find something memorable for your loved ones, but you’ll also be supporting small businesses in your community. Shopping local is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, something we can all consider as we head into a more mindful holiday season. Look out for sustainable gift options, too—think reusable products, eco-friendly wrapping, and gifts

made from natural materials. There’s nothing like a thoughtful, eco-conscious present to spread some holiday cheer.

FESTIVE EVENTS TO WATCH OUT FOR

As we enter November, towns and villages begin to twinkle with the spirit of Christmas, and the lead-up is filled with festive events that are perfect for families and individuals alike. Whether you’re looking for light displays, Christmas fairs, or carol services, there’s no shortage of seasonal joy to be found. Keep an eye out for local listings, as many events start in mid-November and continue into December.

For a more relaxed and intimate experience, many smaller villages and towns host their own Christmas fairs, complete with mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and a friendly, community vibe. If you’re in the mood for something more active, many towns host ice skating rinks and Christmas light switch-on ceremonies, which are always >>>

a magical way to start the season. These events are perfect for the whole family, creating memories that will last long after the decorations come down.

TIME TO THINK ABOUT YOUR CHRISTMAS FEAST

As well as gifts and decorations, it’s never too early to start thinking about the centrepiece of your Christmas celebration: the food. Local butchers are particularly popular at this time of year, offering high-quality cuts of meat that make your festive feast something special. Whether you’re after the traditional turkey, a succulent goose, or perhaps a well-marbled rib of beef, ordering early ensures you get the best selection.

But for those who don’t eat meat, there are plenty of delicious alternatives available locally. Many farm shops and delis stock

an array of plant-based options that make the perfect centrepiece for your Christmas dinner. From nut roasts to vegan pies, stuffed squashes, and even meat-free Wellington, there’s no shortage of festive choices. Some local producers even offer homemade vegetarian and vegan treats that are perfect for the season. Ordering these early ensures you get the freshest ingredients, and often, you can find some truly unique, handcrafted dishes.

Don’t forget to consider local produce and seasonal vegetables to complement your main dish, whether it’s meat or plant-based. Locally sourced root vegetables, sprouts, and cranberries can elevate your Christmas meal while supporting small, independent farmers in the process.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE

No Christmas is complete without the tree, and for many, picking the perfect one is an annual tradition that marks the start of the holiday season. For those who enjoy the full festive experience, why not make a day of it and head out to a local Christmas tree farm? Many places allow you to wander the fields, select your tree, and even cut it down yourself—a great way to make memories with the family while embracing the crisp

winter air. If you’re not up for cutting your own, don’t worry; most farms offer pre-cut trees that are just as fresh and fragrant.

When choosing your tree, consider the size of the space it will be placed in and the type of tree you want. Norway Spruces, and Nordmann Firs are among the most popular varieties, each offering their own unique shape, scent, and needle retention. Make sure to measure the space in your home before you head out to avoid any festive mishaps!

ENJOY THE BUILD-UP TO CHRISTMAS

November is all about anticipation and preparation for the festive season. It’s a time for planning, but also for enjoying the little moments that make Christmas special. Whether you’re on the lookout for unique gifts, enjoying the local festive events, or embarking on the adventure of finding the perfect Christmas tree, there’s plenty to get excited about.

This year, as you tick off your to-do list, take a moment to appreciate the local offerings. By supporting local businesses, participating in community events, and embracing the festive spirit, you’ll make this Christmas even more memorable.

LINDA CHARLES

Linda Charles studied textiles and fashion at university and her background is evident throughout her work, whether it be with heavy texture, using multiple forms of mixed media, including gold and silver leaf, or simply the patternation in her artwork.

Linda has spent her career developing new ideas and continues to break new ground as she strives to produce work that both connects on cerebral and visual levels and produces the same feelings in the viewer as it does with her when she paints it. More recently, it is her sell out Pulp re-imagined collections that have highlighted her dexterity with a paintbrush, where she combines her love of the imagery of the Pulp paperback books of the 40s, 50s, and 60s with a back catalogue of famous hits, artists, and lyrics. Music has always been an important part of Linda’s creativity and she always paints to music in her studio. She had the idea of combining elements of classic songs and artists with the look and feel of old paperback books when she came across a box of vintage books in the attic.

“The first one I came across featured a stunning woman running from

a pair of headlights following her in a remote area - immediately ‘Born to Run’ by Bruce Springsteen played in my head and the concept was born! I have so much fun with these collections because they combine the two artistic concepts of audio and visual. I’ve received so many lovely comments from all walks of life, whether that be from famous songwriters to future brides or just pure music lovers and art collectors.’

In the early 2000s, Linda became one of the most renowned abstract artists in the UK. At the advent of the interior design boom, her use of structure, texture, bold colours, and gold and silver leaf propelled her into mainstream contemporary art. With a career spanning over 25 years, she continues to use her vast experience and enjoys exploring new techniques and mediums to produce striking collections.

INTRODUCING WRENDALE WOODLAND TEA BLEND

A Special Everyday Tea by The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company

Wrendale Designs by Hannah Dale and The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company have teamed up to create a special box of tea, featuring a wonderful illustration of woodland creatures, playfully gathering around a forest themed tiered cake stand of afternoon tea treats.

From your favourite mug to your elegant teapot, Woodland Tea Blend is a delicate yet full bodied tea, to be enjoyed any time of day. A beautiful take on your classic cup of tea. Each box is packed by hand and sustainably sourced from responsibly managed forests. The beautiful box contains 40 compostable tea bags.

Susie first met Hannah at an event when their company journeys had just begun and both companies celebrated 10 years last year. Susie has always loved the Wrendale Woodland collection and approached Hannah to bring her vision to life.

Woodland Blend creates that breath of fresh air in your day. A moment for yourself or with those around you. The warm colours of the design match the warmth of the tea. Whether inside or in nature, the beautiful animals can’t help but put a smile on your face. Wherever you are, you will be transported into nature…

A word from Susie, Founder, The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company shares the excitement for this new blend

“We are excited to bring you our new Woodland Tea Blend! Such a beautiful tea that can be enjoyed as your first cup of the day, with a mid morning snack or perfect for afternoon tea. Many of you know that one of my favourite things is afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, cake, fine bone china and beautiful tea. Woodland Tea Blend represents this so well. We are lucky to be able to share the news that the talented Hannah Dale has created the artwork for us, it is inspired by the animals I see in my own garden. I love spending time outdoors and enjoying the different seasons. We love working with Hannah, what an honour for her to create the perfect woodland scene artwork for us. Great tea all wrapped up in the paper compostable bags that we are becoming so well known for.”

Hannah Dale, Director, Wrendale Designs thoroughly enjoyed bringing Susie’s vision to life… ‘ I was so pleased to be asked by the team at Lincoln Tea and Coffee to work with them on the packaging design for their new Woodland Tea Blend. I’ve known Susie since we both started our businesses and love their ethos, the quality of their products and their commitment to sustainability. As consummate tea drinkers, the Wrendale kitchen is already well stocked with Lincoln Tea and Coffee breakfast tea and we are all looking forward to enjoying a cup of the Woodland Blend with a slice of cake as well.’

Let’s talk about mixers and what they are

Let's talk about why August was so important for many pet owners. August or shall we call it RAWgust is a food movement aiming to improve awareness of consuming raw foods, the health benefits, and the positive impact on the environment. Here at Laughing Dog, we want to take this opportunity to highlight raw feeding for your dog and how to get it right.

There are two diverse types of raw feeding: homemade raw diet and commercially prepared raw diets. Raw diets for your pets are made up of raw meat, raw bone and may include some other naturally occurring ingredients, for example, fruit, vegetables, oils, and seeds. Some paw parents opt for a raw diet as they do not like the idea of canned, baked, or tinned foods.

FOR DRY EYE DISEASE ( DED)

One in five, and nearly 800 million people worldwide, suffer from DED. Over 50% of females over the age of 40, and over 90% of menopausal females, are thought to live with this condition. More recently, the condition has become more common in all ages and genders due to environmental factors, use of cosmetics and medications, excessive screen use, and underlying conditions such as blepharitis and Sjögren’s syndrome.

The front part of your eyes is lubricated by a special moist film consisting of a mucous layer nearest your eyes, a middle, watery layer derived from your tear glands, and a third, outer layer, which is oily (lipid) and produced by special glands (the Meibomian glands) in your upper and lower eyelids.

WINTER - PROOFING YOUR

HOME AND GARDEN

As November arrives, it’s the perfect time to focus on preparing both your home and garden for the colder months. From creating a cosy indoor atmosphere to winter-proofing your garden, this is the season to embrace comfort and plan ahead.

COSY COMFORTS INDOORS

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, your home becomes a cosy retreat. Start by layering soft furnishings like throws, cushions, and rugs in warm, rich textures such as wool, velvet, and faux fur. These small touches instantly add comfort and luxury to your living spaces.

Lighting is key for creating a snug atmosphere. Swap out bright overhead lights for softer, ambient options like table lamps, fairy lights, or candles. The warm glow from these sources creates a soothing, inviting environment during the long winter evenings.

November is also the perfect time to begin adding festive touches to your home. A visit to your local garden centre is ideal for picking up Christmas decorations.

Garden centres are packed with beautiful ornaments, wreaths, and twinkling lights to bring a festive atmosphere indoors. You may even spot the perfect Christmas tree while you’re there—whether real or artificial. If you love the natural scent and charm of a real tree, many garden centres offer a wide selection for you to choose from.

PREPARING THE GARDEN FOR WINTER

Though your garden may seem quieter in November, there’s plenty you can do to prepare it for the colder months and ensure it thrives come spring. Start by clearing fallen leaves from lawns, paths, and flower beds. Instead of disposing of them, collect the leaves to create leaf mould, a fantastic natural fertiliser for enriching the soil. Simply store them in a compost bin or

breathable bags, and by spring, they’ll break down into nutrient-rich material.

It’s also a good time to visit your local garden centre for winter essentials, such as protective fleece for tender plants, bird feeders, and spring bulbs. Planting bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and crocuses now gives them time to establish before blooming in spring.

Winter Wildlife in the Garden

Don’t forget about the wildlife in your garden during winter. Birds and small creatures need extra food and shelter as temperatures drop. Hang bird feeders filled with seeds, and ensure there’s a fresh water source like a birdbath. Creating small piles of leaves or logs also provides shelter for hedgehogs and other small animals seeking warmth.

TAKE IT OR LEAF IT

Fullers Landscaping has some advice if you have an abundance of leaf fall.

Building piles and piles of endless leaf fall can seem like a thankless chore. While a few leaves won’t cause any problems, hazardous, slippery wet leaves and subsequent blocked drains and gutters can be a nuisance and cause a real headache.

But did you know that there are many ways to put your leaves to good use? Here’s how you can put them to work;

1. HELP YOUR LAWN:

When leaves fall onto your lawn, set your rotary lawnmower on its highest cutting height and mow over them without the back bag attached. This will shred the leaves into small pieces enabling them to break down into the lawn. This makes a great soil conditioner and helps the soil to retain moisture and remain healthy throughout the winter.

2. MAKE COMPOST:

Fallen autumn leaves are a great source of brown material for your compost bin. By ensuring they are moist but not wet,

mixed with green material and turned once a month to allow oxygen to circulate, they will eventually break down into a thick black compost – rocket fuel for your plants, flowers and lawn.

3. LEAF MULCH:

If you have a large number of fallen leaves, using them as mulch is a great alternative to throwing them away. First collect them and shred them using a rotary mower. Once you have shredded the leaves, place them around your plants and flower beds – two or three inches thick, avoiding the stem as this can cause the plant to rot. Leaf mulch has a number of great benefits. Not only does it break down into a great soil conditioner, but it will act as insulation for plants and vegetables, and also protect useful animals like worms from prey.

4. BAG THE NUTRIENTS FOR LATER:

During the spring and summer months, it can be difficult to find sufficient brown

material for your compost bin. (a percentage of brown material is essential for healthy homemade compost). By storing leaf fall in bags in a cool dry place, it allows a rich source of brown material for the following year.

5. INSULATION:

Now this one may sound strange, but will be beneficial if your over wintering plants are in your shed or unheated greenhouse, for example. Collect as many leaves as you can, dry them out and bag them up. Pack as many as you can tightly together and store them in the cold areas of your shed or greenhouse to provide insulation.

Winter is the best time for landscaping work, allowing your garden to be ready for enjoyment in the spring and summer months.
