HOME FOR ADULTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES PRAISED FOR “EXCEPTIONAL” SERVICE AND “EXCELLENT” CARE

A Lincolnshire care home has achieved its second ‘Outstanding’ rating

A specialist residential care home for adults with learning disabilities has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for the second time in a row.

The Old Vicarage, located in Stallingborough in Lincolnshire, has been praised for “performing exceptionally well” and achieving “excellent outcomes” for the individuals it supports.

It is one of 11 homes run by Home From Home Care, one of the country’s most innovative care providers for adults with learning disabilities and autism. Founded in 2004, the organisation is seen as a pioneer within the care sector thanks to its culture of innovation, dynamism, empowerment and empathy, as well as the unique technology that supports its team.

Inspectors noted that the service supported individuals to live as full a life as possible and that relatives were extremely happy with the care their family members received.

Colleagues were recognised for working in an “extremely positive person centred way”, showing compassion and dignity and supporting individuals with kindness and respect.

The report also highlighted how individuals’ “independence and life goals were regularly reviewed to ensure people lived meaningful lives” and their “right to choice and control over their everyday life were supported.”

Managing Director of Home From Home Care, Jo Hurley, said:

“We’re very proud to have received another Outstanding rating at The Old Vicarage and are so pleased that the CQC has recognised the work our colleagues do.

“We pride ourselves on providing high quality, dynamic care through our values of transparency, collaborative working, purpose and belonging, creative solutions, and just culture.

“This is clearly evident in the report, highlighting how our colleagues have ‘an exceptionally positive attitude towards the people they support’ and there are ‘excellent

processes in place to support positive outcomes’ for each individual.

“We truly are a care provider unlike any other and this is testament to that - a big well done to all our colleagues at The Old Vicarage.”

The Old Vicarage is located on Church Lane in Stallingborough, North-East Lincolnshire and is home to 14 individuals with learning disabilities, autism and complex physical and mental health.

10 individuals live in the main house and four individuals live in The Mews Cottages, which are single person homes located in the grounds, offering a pathway service as individuals develop their independent living skills.

FREE PARKING IN LINCOLN FOR CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCHON AND LATE-NIGHT SHOPPING EVENTS

City of Lincoln Council is making it easier than ever to enjoy the festive season with free parking on offer during the highly anticipated Christmas Lights Switch-On and latenight shopping dates.

Visitors attending Lincoln’s Christmas Lights Switch-On on Thursday, 28 November can take advantage of free parking from 4pm to 9:30pm at Lincoln Central car park and all other City of Lincoln Council pay-and-display car parks when using PayByPhone.

To qualify for free parking at Lincoln Central car park, users simply need to follow the usual chip token process. If they enter and leave within the specified hours (4pm to 9.30pm), the ‘charge’ will automatically be zero.

For PayByPhone users in council-managed car parks, the app process remains the same; enter your vehicle registration as usual, and no charge will apply if parking between 4pm and 9:30 pm.

However, free parking doesn’t end with the Lights Switch-On event. Visitors can also park for free on the city’s late-night shopping dates: 5 December, 12 December, and 19 December, during the same hours of 4pm to 9:30pm.

Participating stores will remain open until 8pm, giving shoppers plenty of time to explore and tick items off their holiday lists while enjoying the festive illuminations.

The Christmas Lights Switch-On event on 28

November will mark the official start of Lincoln’s Christmas celebrations. Highlights of the evening include a star-studded lineup of performers and special guests, culminating in the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Alan Briggs, lighting up the city at 7:10pm.

With £140,000 invested in Christmas lights and illuminations last year, visitors can expect a truly magical atmosphere with festive displays across iconic locations such as Brayford Wharf, Steep Hill, Cornhill Quarter, and more.

The event will also feature performances from the New Theatre Royal’s pantomime cast, live music, and other exciting entertainment starting from 4:30pm.

Cllr Joshua Wells, Portfolio Holder for Inclusive Economic Growth at City of Lincoln Council, said:

“The Light Switch-On event will be a great opportunity to bring the community together and kick off the festive season, setting the stage for the exciting events and activities the council has planned in the run-up to Christmas.

“The free parking initiative ensures that more people can join in the celebration and enjoy all that Lincoln has to offer during this magical time of year.

“Extending the initiative for the late-night shopping dates also gives people more opportunity to shop for gifts and admire the lights outside of the busier weekend periods.”

As an extra treat during the Christmas Lights Switch-On, visitors will get an exclusive preview of the upcoming Lincoln Ice Adventure, taking place on 7 and 8 December. A stunning ice sculpture will be on display in City Square, offering a glimpse of the magic to come.

With free parking and plenty of activities planned, there’s no better time to visit Lincoln and soak up the festive spirit. Make sure to mark your calendars for 28 November and the late-night shopping dates to experience the best of Lincoln’s Christmas offerings.

PARKWAY’S CHRISTMAS MAGIC PYJAMA PARTIES, PANTO DAMES AND POPCORN

This December, a visit to Parkway Cinemas promises more than just the usual blockbuster and Christmas films. Get ready for a host of spectacular seasonal surprises that will make your cinema experience unforgettable.

As one of the UK’s most successful independent cinema chains, Parkway has been delighting audiences since 1983. Founded by Gerald Parkes and his wife, Denise, this family-run business has built a reputation for offering much more than the average multiplex – all thanks to their unwavering commitment to exceptional customer service and a true love of cinema.

“We’ve always aimed to be so much more than just the films we show,” says Richard Parkes, who, along with his brother Gerrard and mother Denise, took over the family business after Gerald’s passing in 2013. Gerald, who was awarded an MBE for

Parkway is the largest independent cinema in the UK and is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. The nine-screen cinema also has a fully equipped live stage, which will host “The Wizard of Oz” Pantomime with Talegate Theatre this year.

his incredible contribution to the UK cinema industry, was passionate about getting every detail just right.

“It was never just about showing films,” Richard continues. “It’s about creating a shared experience. The films, the food, the atmosphere—it’s all part of the magic. We’re lucky enough to be part of some truly special moments for our audience. For many children, their first-ever live theatre experience is a pantomime, and with our live stages in Cleethorpes and Beverley, we get to bring that joy to life.”

This festive season, don’t miss the chance to join in the fun at Parkway’s Polar Express Pyjama Parties. A sell-out event every year, these magical screenings feature hot chocolate, sweet treats, snow machines, and the opportunity to meet the conductor. And for those in need of a little Christmas cheer with a twist, Parkway also hosts special showings of Die Hard and Love Actually—perfect for the grown-ups looking to add some seasonal nostalgia to their holiday celebrations.

At Parkway, it’s not just about watching a film. It’s about creating unforgettable memories, one screen at a time.

The Playhouse Cinema is believed to be the oldest cinema in Lincolnshire, opening just before Woodhall Spa’s Kinema in the Woods in 1922. Originally converted from a Victorian chapel dating from 1821, it first opened as a cinema on Boxing Day, 1921 – so is celebrating its’ 123rd birthday this Christmas.

Parkway also operates in Barnsley and recently opened an all-recliner luxury cinema in the Lake District. “We’ve got many plans for the future, both for our current cinemas and others. It’ll always be about far more than just the films we’re showing, and Christmas reminds us every year why it’s so important.”

CRAIG DAVISON

As he rode his bike across the famous steel city of Sheffield in the early 1970’s, Craig Davison could not have predicted the impact these carefree days would have upon his career some 40 years later.

With the adventures and escapades of a youth well (mis)spent coming to a close and the nearly endless summer holidays leaving only the very best memories in its place, the line towards becoming one of the UK’s best selling fine artists was anything but a straight one.

A successful role as a cartoonist began the journey with drawing the likes of The Shoe People and The Wombles before moving into animation and games design with a major British company.

Working on a wide portfolio of the day’s most known computer games including Zorro, The Hulk and The Hurricanes allowed Craig the platform to sculpt everyday as his sculpting reference figures for 3D animation developed him artistically enough to become a freelance sculptor working alongside international brands including Harry Potter and Doctor Who.

Turning from clay to brush, Craig Davison began seriously painting as recently as 2007.

Within a year he was finally a full time painter, as he remains to this day, working out of his studio in Worcestershire where he still finds time to sculpt, a much loved addition to his portfolio of works.

Inspired by the comic book artistry of Mike Mignola, the simplistic still characters of Yoshitomo Nara, the energy of Goya and the superb illustrations of N.C Wyeth, Craig is immensely proud to be able to present nostalgia in painted form to collectors all over Europe and the World. Craig Davison signed with Wishbone Publishing in 2018.

‘My head is always filled with new ideas all scrambling to get onto canvas first.

Once they’re there I like my paintings to have a slightly naïve, grubby look with lots of energy – which, when I think about it, sums up my childhood’.

SHARING THE WARMTH OF CHRISTMAS

As Christmas approaches, let’s bring warmth and joy to the elderly, whether at home or in care facilities. From meaningful visits and festive decorating to practical support like mobility aids and winter-proofing, small gestures create lasting memories.

The festive season is a time for connection, compassion, and celebration – an opportunity to ensure that the elderly in our communities, whether at home or in care facilities, feel cherished and included. By focusing on thoughtful gestures and practical support, we can make their winter months brighter and more meaningful.

Amid the hustle and bustle of Christmas, it’s important to remember that for the elderly, the most precious gift is often your time. Whether visiting them at home or in a care home, regular interaction is invaluable. Plan visits filled with meaningful conversations, shared laughter, and quality time together. A Christmas Eve gathering or simply a relaxed afternoon can uplift their spirits and remind them they’re loved.

For those living at home, ensuring warmth and comfort during the colder months is crucial. Check that their heating is reliable, windows and doors are draught-free, and their wardrobe includes cosy essentials like thermal socks and soft sweaters.

Thoughtful gifts, such as heated blankets or foot warmers, can enhance their comfort. Similarly, for residents in care homes, contribute to their comfort by donating practical items like mobility aids, adaptive clothing, or plush blankets.

Decorating their space for the holidays can bring immense joy. Help hang twinkling lights, set up a small Christmas tree, and place festive ornaments around their home or care room. For those in care homes, liaise with staff to organise communal decorating activities. These touches create a festive atmosphere and serve as a visual reminder of the season’s joy.

Food often becomes the centre of celebration and connection. Bring a homemade meal, festive treats, or a hamper of their favourite seasonal goodies. For care home residents, consider arranging a special shared meal or contributing to group celebrations. Ensure dietary preferences and restrictions are considered, allowing everyone to enjoy the feast fully.

Practical assistance is equally important, especially for those at home. Offer to check their mobility aids, such as walkers or wheelchairs, ensuring they’re in good condition. Help winter-proof their living space and support them with tasks like grocery shopping or snow removal. For care home residents, consider providing mobilityfriendly festive crafts or games to encourage activity and engagement.

Creating and cherishing memories is a gift in itself. Whether at home or in care, take time to reminisce with them. Browse old photo albums, share cherished stories, or engage in holiday traditions like baking, crafting, or singing carols. These shared moments bridge generations and leave lasting impressions.

By offering your time, practical support, and companionship, you can bring warmth, joy, and comfort to the elderly this Christmas. Whether they’re at home or in care, your presence and kindness will make their festive season truly special.

TRANSFORM YOUR HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

As the festive season approaches, now is the perfect time to declutter your home and prepare for a sparkling start to the new year.

Clearing out unwanted items not only creates space but can also be an opportunity to earn some extra cash during this expensive time of year. Alternatively, why not spread a little Christmas joy by donating to charity? Local organisations would greatly appreciate your contributions, from clothes and books to toys and household items. Your generosity could bring a smile to someone in need and make their Christmas a little brighter.

Once your home is decluttered, it’s time to focus on the fun part—decorating! Choose a theme to create a cohesive look throughout your home. Before diving in, check that

your decorations from previous years are still in good condition. Test your fairy lights to avoid the dreaded half-lit string, and inspect baubles for any damage. Tackle that inevitable tangle of wires early so you can fully enjoy the decorating process.

For a truly personal touch, consider incorporating handmade decorations. Crafting paper chains, snowflakes, or personalised ornaments is not only costeffective but also a delightful way to spend time with family. These simple creations can add a unique charm to your home while providing a fun-filled festive activity for all

Don’t forget to extend your decorating magic beyond the living room! Even the kitchen can benefit from a sprinkle of Christmas cheer.

A small, no-hassle tree or a festive plate piled high with treats can transform your kitchen into a cosy, inviting space. Whether store-bought or homemade, festive

treats displayed on a decorative stand add a touch of warmth and indulgence.

For those lucky enough to have outdoor space, why not bring the festive spirit to your garden? Festive lights are a wonderful way to create a magical atmosphere outdoors. String fairy lights through trees, shrubs, or along fences, and consider adding illuminated reindeer, snowmen, or lanterns for an extra special touch. Solar-powered options make decorating eco-friendly and hassle-free, while warm white or multicoloured lights can transform your garden into a winter wonderland for all to admire. It’s the perfect way to spread Christmas cheer, both to your household and to passers-by.

Finally, no festive home is complete without the perfect seasonal scents. Scented candles in fragrances like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla create a warm, inviting atmosphere, evoking the cosy charm of a traditional fireplace. Strategically placed candles can enhance the Christmas spirit in every room, making your home feel magical and welcoming.

By decluttering, decorating, and adding personal touches both indoors and out, you can transform your home into a festive wonderland that’s ready for the holiday season. Let this be the year you create a Christmas to remember, full of joy, warmth, and goodwill.

BE AWARE OF FAKE CAR PARTS

AS YOU PREPARE YOUR VEHICLES FOR

WINTER

Trading Standards officers in North East Lincolnshire are warning people of the dangers of buying fake parts for vehicles as they prepare their cars, vans and motorcycles for winter.

The Fake Always Breaks campaign has been launched this month by The Intellectual Property Office, following a survey that shows that one in six motorists have bought a counterfeit vehicle part in the past 12 months.

The IPO is the official UK government body responsible for intellectual property (IP) rights, including patents, designs, trademarks and copyright.

The campaign warns people about the dangers of buying fake parts, including car batteries, headlights, tyres or wheels, windscreen wipers, airbags and brake pads or discs – which are usually made from inferior materials and are not safety-tested, increasing the risk of failure and putting lives at risk.

Fake vehicle parts can also invalidate motor insurance, void vehicle warranties and cause liabilities for garages. They are a global issue, with many people seeking cheaper parts online. Researchers estimate that counterfeit parts imported to the UK were worth almost £1billion in a single year.

The IPO survey reveals that the most commonly-purchased fake car parts in the UK include car batteries (bought by 25% of motorists who admit to buying counterfeit parts), tyres/wheels (23%) and windscreen wipers (19%). Worryingly, 14% of motorists who have purchased fake car parts bought counterfeit airbags, while over a tenth (12%) bought fake brake pads or discs.

31% of people said that saving money is the single biggest reason for choosing cheaper parts. Meanwhile, a third (34%) of motorists who bought fake parts said they did so because they felt there was no discernible difference in appearance (34%).

However, many purchases are also made unknowingly and these are often uncovered at a later stage. More than two in five motorists (45%) who bought a fake part that they thought was genuine only found out through their local garage after the part failed, and 30% became aware during routine service checks.

Be careful if a branded part is being sold for a cheaper price by a seller you don’t recognise, or even if it’s only marginally cheaper. If in doubt, research the seller regardless of shopping online or from the high street. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is.

Be wary of price, check the spec, research the seller and look for proof. These are all ways that can help you spot a fake car part. Consumers can find out more about the dangers of fake vehicle parts by visiting https://www.gov.uk/government/ publications/counterfeit-vehicle-parts/ consumer-guidance-fake-parts

You should report any fake car parts that you see advertised to Crimestoppers online or by calling 0800 555 111.

Cllr Ron Shepherd, NELC Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “Avoiding fake car parts is an issue that involves all motorists as we all look to save money. Fake car parts are not easy to spot and unfortunately problems like this are usually only reported when it is too late and the parts have failed, causing damage or potential injury.

“I urge people to be aware of what they are buying, particularly online, and to use a trusted local garage to source and fit your vehicle parts.

Using these garages ensures the parts installed are genuine and safe, providing peace of mind for both you and the professionals working on your vehicle.

“Trading Standards services in North East Lincolnshire are also part of the national Buy With Confidence scheme, which shows residents that they are buying from businesses that work in a legal, honest and fair way.

“As a customer you can avoid rogue traders and be assured a business has been thoroughly checked.”

GET YOUR VEHICLE WINTER - READY FOR SAFE

WINTER DRIVING

As the colder months approach, preparing your vehicle for icy and challenging conditions is essential to ensure safety and reliability on the roads. A few simple checks and adjustments can make all the difference in your winter driving experience.

TYRE SAFETY FOR WINTER ROADS

Your tyres are your car’s first line of defence against slippery and icy surfaces. Regularly checking tyre treads is crucial to confirm they have enough grip to handle winter conditions. If the treads are worn, replacing them with winter-ready tyres ensures optimal traction and reduces the risk of accidents.

COMPREHENSIVE WINTER SERVICING

Before setting off on long winter journeys, a full vehicle service is a smart precaution. This includes checking your engine, fluid levels, and braking system. Regular maintenance not only enhances your car’s performance but also reduces the likelihood of breakdowns during harsh weather.

BATTERY HEALTH FOR COLD STARTS

Cold weather can significantly affect battery performance. Testing your battery and

ensuring it’s fully charged or replacing it if necessary can prevent those frustrating mornings when your car won’t start. A reliable battery is crucial for both everyday use and longer trips during the winter months.

RELIABLE BRAKING SYSTEMS

Winter driving demands excellent brake performance. Checking brake pads and discs for wear is vital, as compromised brakes can make stopping quickly on icy roads much harder. Addressing any issues before winter ensures your vehicle is ready to handle sudden stops in challenging conditions.

CLEAR VISION ON WINTER ROADS

Cracked or chipped windshields can worsen during the colder months and hinder visibility. Repairing or replacing a damaged windshield not only improves your view but also prevents further issues caused

by temperature changes or road salt. Clear vision is key to navigating safely through snow or rain.

ADDITIONAL WINTER PREPARATION

Beyond these key checks, consider topping up your antifreeze and ensuring your wiper blades are in good condition. Stock your car with essentials like a scraper, de-icer, and emergency supplies, including a blanket and torch. These small steps can make a big difference if you’re caught in adverse weather.

BE WINTER-READY

Preparing your car for winter is a responsibility that ensures both safety and peace of mind. From tyres and brakes to batteries and windshields, taking these steps now will keep you on the move confidently, no matter how cold it gets. Don’t wait for the first frost—schedule your checks today and stay safe on the road this winter.
