We have an illustrious past, featuring in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and have a heritage going back to the Vikings. Did you know that at one time we had over 400 trawlers based in the Port of Grimsby? We also laid claim in the 80’s to making more pizzas here than in the whole of Italy!
With over 160,000 residents and 70,000 households we have a good base to support the needs of local business and industries and our training organisations work hard to keep abreast, indeed ahead, of the fast changing skills needs and qualifications required by our industries.
We are an area of intense ambition with innovation abounding, always with an eye to the future. Today, nowhere in the UK is more being done to help our planet’s needs. You are currently sitting in the UK home of decarbonisation, part of the nation’s ‘Energy Estuary’. The Humber is an area on a mission for a net zero future. Low carbon hydrogen and captured carbon emissions will help create the world’s first net zero industrial region by 2040. This amazing goal will be great for our people looking as it does to create up to 50,000 jobs and supporting skills and educational opportunities across the board. The Chamber will continue to help in this work by being ‘The Voice of Business’, heard not only regionally but across the patch. Indeed the Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, is shortly heading to the Chamber for a meeting, asking specifically to meet some North East Lincolnshire businesses. We are proud to introduce them to him.
Of course much of our current Estuary activity centres round the deep sea Port complex of Immingham operated by ABP, a 24/7 operation, which has seen huge investment over recent years. Immingham handles 46-million tonnes of cargo every year. Together with Goole, Hull and Grimsby, ABP’s other Humber ports, it provides a gigantic portal connecting the UK with business throughout Europe and beyond. We are less than
24 hours from a European market of 170-million people. Mind boggling I’m sure you’ll agree! As is the fact that Humber Ports handle over £75-billion of trade per year! With the development of a 227.5 acre site at Stallingborough ABP continue to invest. As do port operators Able UK, who are soon to open a public electric heavy goods vehicle (EHGV) charging station, said to be the first of its kind in the UK.
However, our geography has encouraged many different sectors, industries and drivers. Without a doubt much of our industrial strength lies in our associations with the wider Humber area and the blue economy but if our economic head and driver is the Humber then our cultural and historic heart remains in a rural and agricultural Lincolnshire. Nowhere is this more so than in our role as a national food processing hub, with over 500 food related companies located here. Our excellent Grimsby Fish Market handles over 20,000 tonnes of fresh fish per annum and our geographically protected status of our traditional smoked fish (just like the geographically protected Melton Mowbray pork pie!) is an accolade we are proud to hold. Indeed Grimsby has one of the largest concentrations of food manufacturing, innovative storage and distribution networks in Europe.
Of course North East Lincolnshire is also home to many industries in chemical, pharmaceutical and allied industries. Indeed we are at the centre of a major concentration of process industries which in the wider region employ around 20,000 people in 400 companies. Double the amount of process plant and machine operators are employed here than the GB average, demonstrating our commitment to manufacturing across the board.
We are currently riding high as the nation’s hub for operational and maintenance support for the offshore wind farms. Renewables giant Orsted is currently building the world’s largest offshore wind farm Hornsea 3, with a capacity of 2.9 GW and expected to be completed around the end of 2027. 3.3-million homes will be powered supporting 5,000 jobs. RWE’s Humber Gateway project will see 73 turbines and power for over 199,000 households. We are certainly doing our bit to meet the country’s clean energy requirements.
The Visitor Economy is vitally important to us, realising as it does over £600 -million per annum and providing around 2,600 full time jobs. Grimsby is home to Freshney Place, the largest shopping centre in Lincolnshire. Town centre development utilising Government grants is proving transformational and we have just unveiled a refreshed Riverhead area. Cleethorpes is an iconic seaside resort, managing to retain its Victorian heritage as well as appealing to a 21st Century seaside visitor. Sympathetic heritage regeneration work utilising £18.4-million of Levelling Up grant monies is currently underway, particularly in the Market Square and Pier Gardens areas.

GREAT GRIMSBY AND CLEETHORPES
Famous landmarks and rich history characterise Grimsby. A Danish fisherman called Grim made these shores his home in the 9th Century AD, beginning centuries of prosperity and growth.
Grimsby stood on a natural harbour called the Haven, sheltering ships from the Humber and the tempers of the North Sea. During the 12th century it developed into a major trading port. Ships brought timber from Norway and wine from Spain and France. Wool was exported and coal was brought along the coast from Newcastle. At one point, it ranked 12th in importance to the Crown in terms of tax revenue.
The gradual silting of the Haven presented many challenges and eventually brought about serious decline to the port.
Pioneering engineering allowed for the creation of Grimsby’s first dock with the opening of the Haven Dock in 1801. Major developments in marine civil engineering continued to be advanced, culminating in HRH Prince Albert laying the foundation stone of Grimsby’s new dock in 1849. Built for the Royal Navy’s largest ships, the new Royal Dock was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1854.
Grimsby’s landmark Dock Tower, its design inspired by Palazzo Publico in Siena Italy, stands between the entrance locks of the Royal Dock and powered the world’s first hydraulically
operated lock gates. Built in 1851, it held 30,000 gallons of water to provide power to the lock gates and cranes on the docks. Advances in hydraulic technology soon made the tower redundant, but it remains as a monument to the entrepreneurial spirit of past Grimbarians.
Cleethorpes was originally made up of three small communities, Itterby, Oole and Thrunscoe. Cleethorpes was a small fishing village until the 1920s when it began to entice visitors to the sea bathing and the theoretical health benefits of the medicinal waters, transforming into a key holiday resort when the railway arrived in the area in the 1940s.
The population of Cleethorpes in 1831 was under 500 residents, this figure has risen dramatically, and it now plays host to around 30,000 people.
Purpose built attractions such as Ross Castle and Cleethorpes Pier were funded by Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company as tourist attractions which are still popular today. The promenade and town continues to be an attraction with its vibrant seaside lifestyle.
IMMINGHAM
Immingham is a major business location with the UK’s largest port and a unique history.
Well known for the industrial sites around the port, the town is a busy logistics hub, a centre for the process industries and a growing focal point for renewable energy companies.
The international significance of Immingham can be traced back more than 400 years. It was the last departure point for the Pilgrim Separatists who fled England for Holland in 1608. These families then sailed on the Mayflower to America in search of a new life.
With thousands of tonnes being imported and exported throughout Immingham each day the town has a special place in the success of global industries ranging from automation through to energy.
The Great Central Railway Company decided to open a neighbouring dock to Grimsby in 1912 as the deep water channel to the river made it accessible for many types of vessels.
The new docks meant that there needed to be an easy link between the towns, therefore the opening of the dock by King George V, known then as the Kings Dock, went alongside the arrival of the electric railway running to Grimsby from Immingham. This train line encouraged workers to move into the area and this led to the further development of the community.
During WW1, the area was used as a submarine base and the war caused Immingham to suffer economically but it began to pick up again when the docks were

ABLE UK WELCOMES THE UK’S FIRST HGV ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING HUB TO ABLE HUMBER PORT
The UK’s first public Electric heavy goods vehicle (EHGV) charging stations will open on Able Humber Port (AHP) this year. The new EHGV charging hub will drive the decarbonisation of future transport and logistics across AHP, and the South Humber ports as new Electric powered HGV’s replace existing diesel fleets.
North Lincolnshire Council granted planning consent for the project in June and the developer Milence –a Daimler Truck, Volvo Group and Traton Group (formally Volkswagen Truck & Bus AG – including Man & Scania) joint venture company opens the first phase in November 2024.
The initial phase will deliver four highperformance Combined Charging Systems (CCS) chargers powering eight bays, and one Megawatt Charging System (MCS) chargers powering two bays and will host lounge and welfare facilities also providing food and beverages. The final site will include further CCS and MCS chargers and enhanced facilities.
AHP can provide tax site Freeport benefits on 439 acres, this includes 5-year business rates relief, stamp duty land tax relief, secondary class 1 national insurance relief and enhanced capital allowances, in the
form of enhanced structures and buildings allowances (SBAs) and enhanced plant and machinery allowances (PMAs).
AHP provides 769 acres of development land and will be constructing over 1 kilometre of new heavy-duty, deepwater quays to be developed on 108 acres of developed riverbed. This will provide deep sea port access to AHP and our neighbouring Able Energy Park (AEP) which provides 722 acres of developable land available for a range of green energy sector businesses.
AHP and AEP are located adjacent to the two South Humber refineries, Exolum national aviation fuel distribution centre and two Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) projects.
Peter Stephenson, Able UK founder and Executive Chairman said,

The hub is an exciting step forward in supporting the decarbonising of the Humber Ports and The HGV transport industry also assisting Able Humber Port and the region transition to net zero.’

ABP ANNOUNCES NEW HUMBER LEADER
Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s largest and leading ports operator, is delighted to announce the appointment of Andrew Dawes to the position of Regional Director, Humber to succeed Simon Bird when he leaves ABP at the end of October. Andrew will be part of the Executive team and will report directly to Henrik L. Pedersen, ABP’s CEO.
Andrew began work at the Southampton Container Terminal and has progressed his career to become a seasoned maritime executive, amassing almost 30 years of experience from the global ports and terminals industry with companies such as DP World, APM Terminals and ICTSI. Alongside his strong leadership credentials, he brings with him a wealth of experience in safety, operations and commercial activities. His experience also includes Managing Director roles with P&L accountability for terminals plus wider regional portfolio responsibility.
Andrew Dawes, Regional Director, Humber Designate, said:
“This is an incredible time to be joining ABP as the next 5-year business strategy is launched. I am delighted to be joining the Humber Region which has some really exciting projects and growth opportunities. Andrew will join ABP on 1st October 2024, allowing a thorough period of handover with the outgoing Regional Director, Simon Bird, who will be stepping down from the role at the end of the month.
ABP operates four ports on the Humber estuary – Immingham, Grimsby, Hull and Goole – and is the Statutory Harbour Authority for the whole estuary. The Humber is the UK’s biggest gateway for trade by volume, handling £80bn+ of trade, generating £6.6bn+ of value added for the UK economy and supporting 90k+ jobs in the broader Humber and Yorkshire region. The Port of Immingham alone is the UK’s largest single port by tonnage handled – more than 50mt in 2023 – with ambitious growth plans such as the Immingham Eastern RoRo Terminal.
ABP Humber is also a central player in the region’s growing role as a green energy leader, already involved with offshore wind (both manufacturing and operations) and with a pipeline of major projects for green hydrogen and carbon capture and storage, such as the Immingham Green Energy Terminal.
The Humber port estates and other ABP land holdings provide a wide variety of logistics, storage and value addition development offerings. For example 182 ha at Humber International Enterprise Park – one of the largest development sites in Europe – and our latest acquisition, the 200+ acre Stallingborough Interchange site. Several locations bring Freeport benefits.

HUMBER PORTS FIRST FOR FISH IMPORTS
Statistics released recently have reconfirmed the Humber’s position as the UK’s leading centre for seafood and one that’s showing real growth. ABP’s Humber ports of Immingham, Grimsby and Hull handled 41.6% of the fish imported into the UK, showing a 10.5% growth year on year, demonstrating the strong proposition of the Humber ports as a leading gateway for UK trade.
The colocation of ABP’s ports with centres of seafood creation – from fish fingers to gourmet ready meals – creates a highly efficient sectorleading hub providing 5,500 jobs. For example, around 70% of the UK’s seafood is processed in the Port of Grimsby, including every other fish finger eaten in the UK, which along with the town has a buoyant processing sector retaining its links to the fish and food industries.
Simon Bird, Regional Director of the Humber ports said:
“This is good news for the Humber ports handling the largest volume of seafood imports in the country. Their strategic locations significantly show the demand for short sea European routes.
“Fish, though not landed over the quayside by a trawler, still plays an important part in the supply chain in the region. The UK is a big importer of seafood, and our ports ensure that high-quality seafood from around the world reaches British consumers efficiently and sustainably, reinforcing our position as a global leader in the seafood trade.”
Simon Dwyer, representing Seafood Grimsby & Humber Alliance and Grimsby Fish Merchants Association and for many years an advocate of using ports close to the UK’s leading seafood processing cluster, said:
“There’s been a step change in the routing of seafood into the UK especially salmon from Norway that now arrives in trucks from Scandinavia into Immingham port rather than being transported by road via southern ports of for example, Dover.
“Grimsby is a major UK processor of salmon so it’s logical to ship the product on ferries that use the port of Immingham rather than southern UK ports. In value terms approximately £1.5bn of seafood arrives at the Humber ports.”
Species brought in include cod, haddock, Alaskan pollock, hake, shellfish with salmon from Norway and Faroe Islands being the biggest volume contributing circa 63,000 tonnes. In the 12 months to December 2023, 609,567 tonnes of seafood were imported in to the UK, including 27,736 tonnes through our Port of Southampton.

COMPLETE FIRST YEAR AT HETA’S NEW
£5.5M TRAINING CENTRE
Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) proudly announced that the latest cohort of Grimsby based engineering apprentices has successfully completed their first year of training. This milestone is particularly significant as it is the first group to do so in HETA’s new £5.5 million purpose-built training centre.
This new state-of-the-art facility was constructed to continue HETA’s legacy of providing exceptional technical training since 1967. With an increased demand for skilled engineers in the region, HETA has responded by enhancing its training capabilities, ensuring that the local workforce is equipped to meet industry needs.
Iain Elliott, CEO of HETA, expressed his pride in the new training centre and the accomplishments of the inaugural cohort.

BRIDGING THE GREEN SKILLS GAP
Associated British Ports (ABP) is delighted to have invested in the new facility at CATCH’s Skills and Apprenticeship Centre in Stallingborough near its Port of Immingham.
CATCH is poised to play a pivotal role in steering more young individuals towards STEM careers, as part of the broader Humber Skills Plan to increase training output by tenfold by 2029. This latest funding initiative has had a substantial impact on its facility.
Simon Bird, Regional Director for the Humber ports said: “As a founder member of CATCH we are delighted to support this new facility to train the future generation of apprentices who will provide the workforce to drive the Humber’s decarbonisation programme.
“There is concern in the private sector about the skills gap impacting the ability to deliver projects. It aligns with the UK Government’s Missions particularly growth, energy and opportunity. It aligns with ABP’s mission to enable the UK’s energy transition.”
The expansion has been made possible by a £1.5 million funding investment from sponsors in the region, including Viking CCS members Phillips
66 Limited, Harbour Energy, DRAX and ABP. Plus, Air Products and Uniper, alongside funding from the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) and Humber Freeport.
The new facility at CATCH’s Skills and Apprenticeships Centre. It represents a significant milestone in CATCH’s commitment to fostering the green skills needed for the energy transition whilst helping to deliver economic growth locally in the Humber, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire regions.
Following this first phase of funding, CATCH has an ambitious expansion plan to develop a new £60 million National Net Zero Training Centre by 2029, aiming to deliver education to 1,000 learners a year, targeted at the skills needed by net zero projects. The Centre will fill the skills gaps which exist in sectors such as Carbon Capture and Storage, green steel, gigafactories, and hydrogen.
Across our 21 ports, ABP is working to reduce our own fuel and power consumption from our own vehicles, equipment and facilities. This has included investments in renewable energy including the largest commercial rooftop solar installation at the Port of Hull, and solar farms in our ports of Barry and Silloth. In all our ports we continue to promote energy efficiency.
Between 2022 and 2024 we will be investing over £600 million to decarbonise our own operations and work to enable the UK’s energy transition including fixed onshore wind, floating offshore wind, green hydrogen, solar and onshore wind, carbon capture use and storage.

HUMBER FOREST HUMBER FOREST PLANTS A QUARTER OF A MILLION TREES TO SUPPORT COMMUNITIES AND THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT
Humber Forest has planted a record number of trees in the last twelve months, with 238,000 trees planted across Hull, East Yorkshire, and North Lincolnshire. Since the project began, three years ago, 400,000 trees have been planted across the region.
Humber Forest, supported by Defra, is the community forest for Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, one of 15 community forests across England and part of the larger Northern Forest that stretches from Liverpool to the Yorkshire Coast. East Riding of Yorkshire Council is the accountable body for the Humber Forest.
The project provides grants to cover up to 100% funding for planting as well as at least five years maintenance for farmers, landowners, businesses, and communities to plant hedgerows or trees on their land.
These trees can play a vital role in reducing soil erosion and flooding, improving air quality, creating habitats for wildlife, and improving community spaces.
In North Frodingham, East Yorkshire, Humber Forest supported local farmer Rob Meadley to plant two hectares of trees in memory of his father, Phil. The trees have been planted on areas that were tricky to farm and had
problems with drainage; the woodlands will help slow the flow of water during heavy rain periods as well as create spaces for wildlife.
Rob Meadley said “The project was aimed at increasing the biodiversity and connectivity across the farm and will be a lasting legacy for my father.”
Most trees are planted by Humber Forest delivery partners with the support of volunteers, including local residents who planted 576 trees alongside Dent Road in Cottingham. The Dent Road project was aimed at enhancing the local area, providing a local community woodland for residents, while enhancing the area for wildlife.
The majority of tree saplings for Humber Forest plantings are also grown at Mires Beck Nursery in North Cave, an East Yorkshire charity that supports adults with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and Autism.

DOCK TOWER CONSERVATION PLAN
Listed Building Consent has been sought for conservation works on Grimsby’s iconic landmark, the Dock Tower.
The Grade I listed structure owned by Associated British Ports (ABP) is the only one of its kind in the country and the work will include key structural repairs on the parapets, building of a new staircase, and drainage.
If approved by North East Lincolnshire Council, work could start on the historical structure later this year in the hope it can reopen to the public.
Standing 309 feet (94.2m) tall to the top of the lantern, the tower was completed on 27 March 1852 to power the hydraulic machinery of Grimsby docks. Its height was to achieve the sufficient pressure needed to operate the machines.
It was built by James Meadows Rendel, the civil engineer who constructed the docks at Grimsby between 1844 and 1853 and opened by Queen Victoria when she visited the port in October 1854. Designed by James William Wild, an architect born in Lincoln, he also contributed to the Great Exhibition of 1851 and spent several years in Egypt, and you can see the middle eastern influence on the lantern at the pinnacle.
The Dock Tower is a massive feat of Victorian engineering. She is one of a kind and means so much to Grimbarians and it’s hoped to open the tower annually for tours to the top for what is surely the best view in Grimsby.
The ground floor of the tower was lined with pink, white and blue drapery when Queen Victoria visited the structure. Her Majesty gave permission for Prince Albert, the Prince of Wales, and the Princess Royal to accompany engineer James Rendell in the hydraulic lift to the gallery running around the tower above the water tank. The lift is no longer in existence with access to the top currently via a spiral staircase.

BUDGET SUBMISSION:
INCREASING FUEL DUTY WOULD HARM GROWTH AND DRIVE UP PRICES, LOGISTICS UK WARNS
Removing the five pence per litre cut in fuel duty could drive inflationary cost pressures, raising prices for businesses and consumers, according to a submission made by business group Logistics UK to the Treasury ahead of the autumn Budget on 30 October.
The business group, which is one of the UK’s largest and only trade body representing all logistics, outlined its concerns that increasing costs for industry would apply the handbrake to economic growth while driving up the price of everyday goods. It also said that higher costs for the sector could inhibit its ability to continue investing in its decarbonisation.
The extension to the five pence per litre cut in fuel duty is set to end in March 2025 and Logistics UK’s submission calls for the cut to be maintained for a further year. According to Logistics UK analysis, a 1p increase in fuel duty would cost haulage businesses across the UK over £185 million per year.
Logistics UK Chief Executive David Wells OBE said,
“The logistics sector underpins all other sectors and has a critical role to play in driving growth and the new government’s industrial strategy, so now is not the time to increase costs for logistics businesses. With hauliers operating on low margins, typically around 2.5%, often the only sustainable way to manage cost increases is to pass
them on through the supply chain with consumers, ultimately, picking up the tab in higher prices. This is something our members are loath to do but will have no choice when they are also managing rising wage costs and new vehicle prices, while investing in new equipment to take us into a net zero future.
“We recognise the constrained fiscal situation facing the Chancellor and are confident that the best way that our sector can help the government manage it is by driving growth, growth that would be stifled by tax increases.”
According to Logistics UK, fuel represents a third of the costs for logistics businesses and the weekly fuel bill for a 44-tonne diesel HGV is estimated to be approximately £888 with £436 taken in fuel duty by HMRC. The trade body’s submission highlights that logistics businesses paid £5.84 billion in fuel duty in 2021, contributing more than 20% of all fuel duty paid to HMRC.
Wells added, “In the medium term, we are calling for a move to a dynamic mechanism for fuel duty that, in periods of inflation, enables the Treasury to keep fuel duty down by taking into account its tax receipts from VAT on fuel. We also
want the government to better align road and rail charges, to enable rail freight to be cost competitive.
“For the long-term, we are keen to work with the government to help develop plans for the future of transport pricing that ensure it works for the logistics sector and wider economy. Any new pricing system must recognise that logistics works as an integrated system across transport modes and operators must be able to make rational decisions to move goods in the most productive, strategic and green way.”
The call to maintain the current fuel duty cut is one of several measures outlined by Logistics UK in its submission to the Treasury. Logistics UK has set out five priority areas for unlocking economic growth, which include creating a closer partnership between the government and logistics sector; developing innovative and integrated infrastructure; ensuring a fair transition to becoming a clean energy superpower that rebuilds the UK’s industrial strength; creating a skills partnership to support a thriving sector; and backing trade as a driver of innovation and productivity.

THE FOCUS OF THE GREATER LINCOLNSHIRE LEP
This year has been another busy one for the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, which has continued to attract investment, innovation and skills to the area, writes Chief Executive Ruth Carver.
In autumn 2023 a mayoral devolution deal was announced for Greater Lincolnshire.
The Greater Lincolnshire LEP supports the long-term investments of around £4 billion extra funding this will bring to the region, and most importantly the stronger voice this will give Greater Lincolnshire.
In the meantime, the LEP is continuing to support our priority sectors, working to help build a stronger economy for Greater Lincolnshire and overcome challenges affecting every industry. We are particularly proud of recent achievements in the UK Food Valley, skills, the visitor economy and the Humber Freeport.
UK FOOD VALLEY
Since its launch in 2021, the UK Food Valley has been supporting the growth of the food industry with the aim of becoming a Top 10 Global Cluster in agri-food. Some parts of the sector, such fish processing and fresh produce in south Lincolnshire, are close to achieving this.
Robotics is playing an increasingly important role in harvesting on Lincolnshire farms.
Investment in the UKFV is accelerating and now running at £1 billion per annum and 75,000 workers are employed in the sector across Greater Lincolnshire. This proves that the industry has a bright future and is why we
want to work closely with the new government to continue to support this growth.
This industry is also focusing on overcoming challenges such as reducing carbon emissions, attracting and retaining a talented workforce and leveraging new technologies.
We think there are some exciting opportunities for the food sector to work with other priority sectors for the Greater Lincolnshire LEP including energy, engineering and defence, and we are also collaborating with others including government and business people from around the UK to drive positive change in the industry.
CAREERS HUB
Our Greater Lincolnshire Careers Hub was busy in the last academic year, culminating in a celebration event for careers leaders, education providers and employers who are involved in the Careers Hub network in July.

As the new academic year is starting, the team are ready to support more schools and organise rewarding events for students across the county.
HUMBER FREEPORT
Since its launch one year ago, the Humber Freeport has collaborated with industry, academia and the public sector to help the region align on its unique proposition.
More than £1 billion of new investment has been pledged as Humber Freeport built strong foundations for long-term growth in its first year.
In August the Humber Freeport attracted yet another major inward investment by playing a key role in securing a £250 million development by Mitsubishi Chemical Group UK Ltd. The company has committed to invest in a new production line at Saltend Chemicals Park, which will create dozens of new jobs while also safeguarding 130 existing roles at the Mitsubishi Chemical Group facility.
Looking ahead, Humber Freeport will continue building on the region’s existing strengths in advanced manufacturing, logistics, chemicals and port-related industries.
It will also continue to work with the government to help deliver on its green agenda, driving clean and sustainable growth.
VISITOR ECONOMY
This year our Visitor Economy Board has been focusing on skills and making people more aware of the jobs available in the sector.
The visitor economy encompasses more than just tourism; it also includes hospitality, events, arts, retail and even sport. This also means that there is a wide range of jobs available in the sector to suit every skillset.
Lincolnshire is lucky as there are many organisations that recognise the power of a strong visitor economy and are excited to deliver that.
The recent Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) accreditation awarded to Destination Lincolnshire is a great example of the hard work going on in the county to boost the visitor economy.
Greater Lincolnshire’s visitor economy is currently estimated to be worth over £2.9 billion per year to the Greater Lincolnshire economy and has long-term growth potential, especially as the area has such a rich heritage, cultural and leisure offer.

The Greater Lincolnshire LEP Annual Conference will be taking place on Thursday 7th November 2024 at the EPIC Centre, Lincolnshire Showground.
This year’s conference titled Innovation for Growth will focus on the future of the Lincolnshire economy and world-leading innovation, be it ideas, tech or processes.
It will feature the usual quality mix of keynote, impact stories, panel discussions and a fantastic expo arena demonstrating new technologies and innovations from across Greater Lincolnshire.

POWER SURGE: UK SPENDS £250 MILLION EACH MONTH IMPORTING RECORD VOLUMES OF ELECTRICITY FROM EUROPE
The UK is importing record amounts of power from Europe, with the country spending more than £250 million on power from abroad each month, new analysis by Drax Electric Insights has found.
Arecord 20% of the country’s electricity demand was met by imports from Europe during the second quarter of 2024. Imports accounted for more than double the volume of power generated by the country’s solar panels, and even nearly overtook gas the first time ever. The UK’s imported power is brought ashore through a series of underwater cables known as interconnectors.
Britain has imported electricity from abroad since 1961 but changing power grids and trading rules has led to a sharp rise both in the number of interconnectors, and the volume of power flowing into the country in recent years. During the second quarter of 2024, Britain imported 12.2 TWh, while exports were just 3 TWh.
The findings have been released as part of the next instalment of the quarterly Drax Electric Insights report. The publication is an independent report by academics from Imperial College London commissioned by Drax through Imperial Consultants.
“Much of Britain’s conventional power generators like coal and nuclear stations have retired in recent years,” explained Dr Iain Staffell of Imperial College London, and lead author of the quarterly Drax Electric Insights report series. “Fewer dispatchable generators means less competition and higher prices, making cheaper electricity from the continent much more attractive to import. The government must be mindful of the need to retain sufficient dispatchable generation capacity on
our system for both energy security and affordability reasons as it works towards its ambition of having a clean power grid by 2030. Britain is always going to need weather-proof sources of power to keep the lights on.”
He continued: “There’s been a huge rise in the volume of solar power capacity installed on the continent. Germany has installed 14 times as much solar capacity in the last three years as the UK to cut its reliance on Russian gas. That means in spring and summer months there is often an abundance of cheap electricity on the continent which the UK can import.”
While some may see this increasing reliance on imports as a risk to energy security, Dr Staffell thinks these interconnectors will increasingly be used by the UK to export power as the renewables revolution takes hold here.
“As long as we maintain sufficient homegrown, dispatchable generation on the system then interconnectors can actually strengthen our energy security. The new government wants to make Britain a clean energy superpower, and if we achieve the scale of installed renewables that is being talked about, we simply won’t be able to use all of the power we generate here in the UK,” he said. “Being able to either store this power at home through more storage capacity or selling it abroad is an attractive proposition. During periods of high winds in the North Sea but calmer weather on the continent, exporting
power could be potentially lucrative for the UK and help to lower bills for consumers here.”
One of the newest interconnectors helping to supply record volumes of imported power is the North Sea Link project which links Britain to Norway. It started operations in 2021 and can transport 1.4 GWs of electricity – meaning that if it was a conventional power station, it would be Britain’s seventh largest by capacity.
The Scandinavian state has more than 1,200 hydro storage reservoirs and more than double the number of pumped storage hydro plants than the UK. This enormous hydro storage capacity is increasingly being used to balance out drops in supply from intermittent sources of electricity such as wind and solar farms.
The UK has just four pumped storage hydro plants despite the increasing need for enhanced storage capacity to manage an intermittent power grid. No new plant has been built in the country since 1984, with barriers to securing private investment leaving many potential projects in limbo.
Drax is currently progressing an £80 million upgrade to its Cruachan pumped storage facility in Scotland and has exciting plans to build a brand-new 600 MW plant adjacent to the existing site.
Ian Kinnaird, Drax’s Scottish Assets Director, said:
“As the UK becomes more reliant on wind and solar power, we will need other sources of electricity to keep the lights on when the wind doesn’t blow, or the sun doesn’t shine.
“At Drax, we believe a new generation of pumped storage hydro plants can play a pivotal role in enhancing UK energy security. With the right support from government, we can move forward with our plans to build the country’s first new pumped storage hydro plant in a generation at Cruachan. It’s an incredibly exciting project that will support almost a thousand jobs and leave the UK with a more secure energy grid.”
ØRSTED’S HORNSEA 3 AND HORNSEA 4
AWARDED CAPACITY IN UK ALLOCATION ROUND 6
The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has awarded Ørsted contracts for difference (CfD) for a 1,080 MW share of the Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm, as well as a 2,400 MW CfD for Hornsea 4. The CfDs were awarded at inflation-indexed strike prices of GBP 54.23 per MWh for the share of Hornsea 3 and GBP 58.87 per MWh for Hornsea 4. Both contracts are in 2012 prices.
Rasmus Errboe, Deputy CEO and Chief Commercial Officer at Ørsted, said:
“We’re pleased with the outcome of allocation round 6, which is an important milestone for two of the world’s largest offshore wind farms. We look forward to delivering these landmark projects, which will supply renewable power at large scale to UK consumers and businesses and help the UK government achieve its target of quadrupling offshore wind capacity to 60 GW by 2030.”
Duncan Clark, Senior Vice President and Head of UK & Ireland at Ørsted, said: “The important takeaway from this allocation round is that progress is being made, and it’s crucial that this momentum continues to grow. The Government has shown it takes renewable energy seriously, and we’re confident it will continue working with the sector to increase the volume of projects deployed in the UK. Offshore wind is key to the nation’s energy security and remains one of the most attractive forms of energy generation, offering lowcost, highly scalable electricity to UK bill payers. Ørsted and the wider industry stands
ready to deliver with a substantial pipeline of developments.”
About the projects
Hornsea 3 will be the world’s single largest offshore wind farm with a capacity of 2,955 MW.
Ørsted expects to take FID on Hornsea 4 within the next 18 months and is currently targeting commissioning of the project before the end of 2030.
Ørsted currently operates 12 offshore wind farms in the UK. Hornsea 3 and Hornsea 4 will be Ørsted’s third and fourth gigawattscale projects in the Hornsea zone, following Hornsea 1 (1.2 GW) and Hornsea 2 (1.3 GW), which are already being operated out of Ørsted’s operations and maintenance hub in Grimsby. When Hornsea 3 comes online, Ørsted’s Hornsea zone will have a total capacity in excess of 5 GW, making it the world’s largest offshore wind zone covering the power consumption of approx. 5 million UK homes. The addition of Hornsea 4 will create
an offshore wind cluster of around 8 GW and unlock further cluster synergies.
About the CfD contracts
The two-way contracts for difference (CfD) for Hornsea 3 run for up to 15 years, starting after commissioning of the wind farm. The strike price is inflation-indexed up to and throughout the CfD period. The nominal starting price per MWh will be determined based on the strike price plus accumulated inflation from 2012 until the CfD starts. After the CfD ends, Hornsea 3 will receive the market price for electricity or enter into new power purchase agreements.
Ørsted will build Hornsea 3 and Hornsea 4 including transmission assets (offshore and onshore substations and export cables). When the wind farms have been fully commissioned, Ørsted will, in accordance with UK regulations, divest the transmission assets to a new owner.

Decisions have now been reached on the eighth annual round of the East Coast “Skills Fund”. This forms part of the £465,000 East Coast Community Fund 20-year annual commitment and is part of the community engagement programme for Hornsea One and Race Bank offshore wind farms.
Over £80,000 is shared between four organisations delivering projects relating to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) education and training.

LINCOLNSHIRE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SECURES GOVERNMENT BACKING FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS
The Institute of Technology will continue to support the education and training of Lincolnshire’s technical workforce into the future
The Lincolnshire Institute of Technology (LIoT) has announced it has been relicensed by the Department for Education (DfE), allowing it to continue its work for another 10 years.
The relicensing will see the LIoT work collaboratively with local learners, education providers and employers to ensure Lincolnshire’s current and future workforce have the right skills, as well as support the economic growth of the region.
The renewed government backing sees the LIoT remain committed to fostering innovation and excellence in the engineering, manufacturing, digital and construction sectors.
Mick Lochran, Director of the LIoT, said:
“We’re extremely proud to have achieved a 10-year license extension from the DfE - it shows the government’s commitment to supporting the development of the technical skills that our industries require, and demonstrates the value of the work we’re doing.
“In the last five years, over 3,000 learners have achieved a technical qualification through the LIoT - the majority at level 4 or 5 - before going on to gain employment. The LIoT partners have facilitated over £30 million capital investment in STEM education, enabling eight new training facilities to be opened or refurbished with state-of-the-art, industrial-standard equipment.
“Over the next 10 years, our mission is to create even stronger links with employers across the county, to support the development of the workforce of the future.”
The LIoT is a partnership of local education providers including the University of Lincoln, University Campus North Lincolnshire, University Centre Grimsby, Boston College, Grantham College & University Centre, Lincoln College, Riseholme College and Lincoln UTC.
It also works with regional employers including Bakkavor, Quickline Communications and United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust who represent employers on the LIoT board.
It is part of a national network of 21 IoTs, made up of experienced education providers and leading employers located all across England. Backed by £290 million of government investment, each IoT focuses on specialisms to suit their location, with the aim to fill immediate skills gaps while building a pipeline of talent for the future.
