Popular Family Business has relocated to larger premises staying in Freshney Place.

Segal’s Jewellers, a well-established family-owned business spanning four generations, has relocated to a prominent location with Freshney Place. This move comes ahead of the demolition of Flottergate, where the old store was located, this is to accommodate the construction of a new cinema and leisure complex.

The beautiful new shop, which is along Friargate Mall, opposite Marks & Spencer where the old Greenwoods shop was and just a few doors down from Primark has given them more space to showcase their vast range of jewellery. Keeping with good old-fashioned values their new shop is designed in line with the flag ship store in Hull’s busy city centre.

Segal’s Jewellery traces its origins back to 1919 in Hull when Jack Segal established a watch repairs business. Over time, the business has expanded to include jewellery. Jack’s son Maurice started by buying a couple of rings, reconditioning them, popped them in the window and within an hour had sold them both and so the story began. Maurice married Shirley and between them they created the business as it is today.

Jo and Mat, Shirley’s children came into the business, Mat with a passion for watches, diamonds and bullion took the shops to a whole new level and expanded the buying of the second-hand and unwanted jewellery.

In 1997, Jo Roos, Shirley’s daughter and the third generation of Segal’s, opened the store in Freshney Place, where it has proudly stood ever since. Today the business is run by Jo and her brother Mat and their children, marking it as a fourth-generation family enterprise. Our new store, ran by manager Laura Court (the lady with the bow as she is fondly known as) is in a much busier place. So although we have a shiny new store, it is still the same smiley faces that all our customers know and love. There is Jane, Mat’s wife and Libby and Dan Jo’s children who are all involved with the running of the shop.

Jo expressed her excitement about the move, stating, ‘we are thrilled to have relocated to our beautiful new shop. Our new location is significantly larger and will reflect the design and offerings of our flagship

store in Hull. Customers can expect an extensive selection of antique, second-hand and new jewellery.

With our loyal local customer base, investing in a larger shop in Grimsby was an easy decision’ She further added, ‘we are delighted to secure a long-term future in Grimsby as Freshney Place and the town embark on exciting changes and improvements’.
