HISTORY

Big Bear Through the Years

From the Gold Rush to snow resorts, Big Bear boasts a storied past.

GOLD IS FOUND IN BIG BEAR In 1855, early settlers in Big Bear Valley discovered gold. A few years later, the first recorded mining operation began at Starvation Flats, near what is now the intersection of Division and Big Bear Boulevards.

1845

THE PIONEERS In pursuit of outlaws who had been raiding ranches in Riverside, Benjamin Wilson led a posse into the mountains. Once they reached the top of the mountain range, Wilson and his team found a valley swarming with grizzly bears, inspiring the moniker of Big Bear Valley.

BIGBEAR.COM

1855 – 1859

1888–1911

THE BEGINNING OF A RESORT TOWN As a sign of the times to come, the Valley’s first resort lodging, the Bear Valley Hotel, opened its doors. New roads increased access to the Valley as well; in 1908, the first round trip through the mountains by automobile was completed in 13 hours and 17 minutes — a breakneck pace at the time.

1883

1860–1879: THE GOLD RUSH In 1860, a bear hunter named William Holcomb found gold in the backcountry after tracking a bear’s trail to a creek filled with flakes of gold. News of the discovery spread, and Southern California’s largest gold rush was on.

BIG BEAR LAKE IS BORN To supply citrus farms in Redlands with water, Frank Brown began construction on a dam across the Valley, creating a reservoir that became Big Bear Lake.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY MUSEUM (2); SHUTTERSTOCK.COM (2)

PRE-1840: THE NATIVES The first known inhabitants of Big Bear were the Yuhaviatam (meaning “people of the pines”), who have lived in the Big Bear region for thousands of years.

X-TREME SPORTS

1911–1925: HOLLYWOOD DISCOVERS BIG BEAR With its scenic vistas of majestic mountains and tranquil forests, Big Bear Valley became an attractive backlot for the burgeoning film industry in nearby Los Angeles, driving a surge of tourism to the area.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY MUSEUM; SHUTTERSTOCK.COM; BIG BEAR VISITOR BUREAU

HOLLYWOOD’S NATURAL BACKLOT Since its founding, Big Bear Valley has been no stranger to the silver screen. The region was featured in classics such as Heidi (starring Shirley Temple) and Gone with the Wind, and the Valley became a favorite destination for movie stars looking to escape the glitz and glam of Hollywood. Today, Big Bear Valley continues to serve as a scenic backdrop for hit films and TV shows, including Grey’s Anatomy and The Bachelorette. Catch sights of locations from some of your favorite movies and shows, or discover a production in action — and if you’re lucky, you just might spot a famous face or two.

1928–1949: THE (WINTER) FUN BEGINS The first winter facilities were built in 1928, when a ski jump competition was held just west of Big Bear Village. In 1938, a toboggan run and sling lift were developed behind the Village. The 1930s and ’40s saw an explosion in tourism as people flocked to the area to ski, and the first ski resort was built in 1949.

1958–1961: SNOW DAY! Hoping to extend the winter season, nearby Rebel Ridge Ski Area began experimenting with snowmaking technology. In 1961, Snow Summit was the first Big Bear resort to use the new advancements, churning up snow created from Big Bear Lake’s water supply.

In the late 1980s, snowboarding exploded on the winter scene, and Big Bear’s ski resorts became early adopters of the new sport. Snow Summit and Bear Mountain would serve as training grounds for some of snowboarding’s biggest stars, including Olympic gold medalist Shaun White. Fittingly, Big Bear would host the first ever Winter X Games in 1997.

1998: BIG BEAR DISCOVERY CENTER

Co-managed by the Southern California Mountains Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service, the center operated as a steward for the San Bernardino National Forest. Today, it services more than 190,000 annual visitors looking to explore this pristine landscape.

1988 – 1997

2002

SNOWY PARADISE Snow Summit acquired Bear Mountain and became Big Bear Mountain Resorts, creating an unparalleled mountain experience for skiers and snowboarders.

TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE Care For Big Bear is born out of a love for the area’s natural beauty and a desire to preserve this natural playground for generations to come. Unifying Big Bear residents and visitors, the campaign strives to foster respect for the community, appreciation for the region’s natural environment, and enjoyment of the valley.

HERE ARE FIVE TIPS TO REMEMBER WHEN VISITING IN WINTER.

1

STAY OFF BIG BEAR LAKE. The lake’s ice is extremely thin and not suitable for walking or skating. Don’t put your life at risk!

2

4

CARRY CHAINS/ TRACTION DEVICES in your car from November to March, and pull off the road to put them on.

APPLY SUNSCREEN AND DRINK H20. You get dehydrated and sunburnt more easily in higher altitude.

3

5

BRING KITTY LITTER and a shovel to get out of icy situations.

SLED ON TUBING HILLS. Avoid streets and private property.

Our spaces are a blast to explore, and we work hard to ensure everyone has a fun and safe time on our pristine snow. Do your part to leave no trace: Pack in or properly dispose of anything you bring, including sleds, masks, and food and beverages.

HIKE ALL DAY

Here are five trails in Big Bear Lake where you can have fun all day long.

RIGHT: SHUTTERSTOCK

SUNRISE Sunrise might be the best time to explore Big Bear: The air is cool and quiet as the forests begin to stir. For a leisurely morning activity, take an easy stroll on the 1.6-mile Stanfield Marsh Boardwalk to see and hear the valley come to life. But for sweeping alpine vistas timed perfectly with the sun’s arrival, head up the Cougar Crest Trail. Rest near the top to take in the scenery before heading back down or venturing on to Bertha Peak. EARLY TO MID-MORNING Starting out at the base of the Aspen Glen Picnic Area, the 6-mile Pine Knot Trail is a great option for those looking for an hours-long diversion before taking a dip in the lake. After winding through a diverse grove of white firs, Jeffrey pines, oaks, and manzanita, the trail culminates in spectacular views of Mt. San Gorgonio.

AFTERNOON Not a morning person? Don’t worry — there are still plenty of trails to discover that offer great midday hikes. An easy .6-mile trek, the Champion Lodgepole Trail offers a pleasant hike through lush forest (perfect for escaping the afternoon heat) before ending at Bluff Meadows, where you’ll find some of the largest Lodgepole pine trees in the world. SUNSET Sometimes the best way to wrap up a day in Big Bear is with a sunset stroll — and one of the best spots to do that is on the 2.5-mile-long Alpine Pedal Path along the lake’s north shore. Watch as the sun turns the water golden before dipping below the horizon. (Tip: Make sure to bring a flashlight for the trek back!) Most trailhead parking requires an Adventure Pass, available for purchase at the Big Bear Visitor Center.

USE CAMPFIRES RESPONSIBLY Get your campfire permit at permit. preventwildfiresca.org. LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND While tempting, leave any natural keepsakes you find in the forest. RESPECT WILDLIFE Give animals their distance. You’re in their home! DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Pack it in, pack it out. Bring a bag to carry your trash. BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS Care for Big Bear means caring for each other! Let’s make the outdoors special for everyone.

AFTER SKIING DOWN SNOW-DUSTED SLOPES, kayaking on shimmering waters, or traversing scenic hiking trails, you’ll be ready to unwind with a drink in hand. Whether you’re in need of a cocktail, an ice-cold craft brew, or a glass of vino — with takeout, delivery, and outdoor seating options — here are the best spots to quench your thirst in Big Bear. BARREL 33 Sip the day away at this trendy wine bar. The tasting room pours more than 100 California vinos, including small-batch boutique wines from the Central Coast and Southern California, plus distinct vintages from the highest-altitude commercial vineyard and winery in the northern hemisphere. BIG BEAR BAR & GRILL At the newest bar on the block, the drinks are only the start of your experience. Pair libations with familyfriendly entertainment that includes live music and karaoke, horseshoe pits, pool tables, and more.

HACIENDA BAR AND GRILL This buzzy restaurant serves up inventive craft cocktails alongside delicious Mexican fare. Swing by in the morning to cure what ails you with one of the bar’s two martinis, embrace the resort life with a tropical Mai Tai, or close the evening with a chile-laced watermelon Cadillac margarita.

BIG BEAR LAKE BREWING COMPANY The spacious brewery offers everything from full-bodied stouts and malty porters to vibrant pilsners and hoppy IPAs — all brewed on-site. CAPTAIN’S ANCHORAGE Once owned by cowboy actor Andy Devine, this rustic watering hole serves up beer, wine, and cocktails along with a storied history that includes a mischievous ghost named George. OLD COUNTRY INN The Old West meets boozy excellence at this downhome restaurant. Drink your fill with a menu of mimosas, margaritas, and some of the best Bloody Marys you’ll ever try. THE PINES TAVERN ON THE LAKE It doesn’t get much better than sipping a dirty martini or flute of champagne while overlooking the shimmering lake encompassed by majestic mountains.

From gorgeous outdoor patios to takeout and delivery options, there are so many ways to take in the splendor of our valley while drinking responsibly, including designating a driver and skipping the plastic by bringing your own metal straws and a cloth or paper bag for reuse. BIGBEAR.COM
