FLIP THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER TO SEE SULTAN RUN THROUGH THE PAGES OF THIS MAGAZINE!
The Camarillo White Horse is a rare horse breed with its origins firmly rooted in Camarillo. Known for its pure white coloring, the breed is more than 100 years old and began with a single horse, Sultan (aka the “stallion of a dream”). Rancher Adolfo Camarillo, the city’s founding father, purchased Sultan in the early 1900s and was so struck by the stallion’s coloring that he began a breeding program to create an entirely new kind of horse. (It’s true! Studies prove that the Camarillo White Horse has a special genetic marker resulting in a coloring not found in other breeds.) Soon, Sultan and his offspring became synonymous with the city of Camarillo itself. Camarillo White Horses have been featured in the Pasadena Rose Parade and the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and have been ridden by presidents Warren G. Harding and Ronald Reagan. For more on the Camarillo White Horse, turn to page 15.

Going to the Chapel
Located at the edge of Old Town, St. Mary Magdalen Chapel carries on the Camarillo family legacy.
Looking to upgrade and expand their crowded, one-room family chapel, brothers Juan and Adolfo Camarillo established St. Mary Magdalen in 1913 after several years of dreaming and planning. The chapel was built in honor of their late father, Don Juan Camarillo, and mother, Martina Hernandez, and named after their eldest sister, Magdalena.
Today, the historic chapel hosts an active congregation and is a wonderful example of the California Mission style. Classified by its white stucco exterior and red-tile roof, the chapel draws in architecture lovers with its palm-lined patio, lush gardens, arched porticos, and colorful stained-glass windows. Inside, visitors find an intricate lattice of exposed beams, paneling, and a dark walnut altar with a handcarved sanctuary. The well-preserved church is a lasting tribute to the Camarillo family.
A Lasting Legacy
Innovation,
LONG BEFORE it was known by its current name, Camarillo has been a close-knit, innovative community for generations. The region’s first residents, the Chumash, recognized the rich agricultural bounty and natural resources at their disposal, utilizing native greenery to make tightly woven baskets to carry water and tomols (plank canoes).
After Spain claimed the area in 1837, land was granted to Jose Pedro Ruiz and later purchased by cattle rancher Juan Camarillo in 1875 for $3.69 an
bounty of the land:
acre. When Juan passed away in 1880, his 16-year-old son Adolfo took the reins at what was then known as Rancho Calleguas.
A marked change came when Adolfo took over. The young Camarillo would ultimately nurture the spirit of innovation in the area for the next 78 years.
“He was an innovator and very much a community leader,” says Gerry Olsen, author of Don Adolfo Camarillo: A Living Legend. With nearly 10,000 acres in his capable hands, Adolfo shifted the focus of the
community spirit, and the

ranch from cattle to crops, becoming one of the first growers in the area to introduce lima beans and citrus.
His forward-thinking vision expanded beyond his own property and fostered the beginning of Camarillo as a centrally located Southern California city. “He was the one who gave the land to Southern Pacific Railroad to come through here [in 1899], with the stipulation that there would be a stop in Camarillo,” Olsen says. “That was the beginning of [the town of] Camarillo.” Decades later, Adolfo allowed Highway 101 to expand onto his land, further cementing Camarillo’s identity as a convenient, accessible stop for travelers heading to and from Los Angeles.
Adolfo’s future-driven foresight enhanced the lives of many Camarillo locals, too. A fierce advocate of education, he donated 50 acres for the development of Adolfo Camarillo High School, which opened in 1956.
“He wanted every child [to] get an education,” Olsen says. He also guaranteed that all of his ranch workers’ children could go to school, and served on the Pleasant Valley School Board for over 50 years. (The school board was just one of 38 organizations Adolfo was a member of in his lifetime.)
With how much Adolfo gave to his community until his death in 1958, it’s no wonder that when Camarillo incorporated in 1964, it took his name as its own. After that, expansion was rapid— and very much in keeping with Adolfo’s legacy. Pleasant Valley Hospital was established in 1973, the Camarillo Airport in 1976, California State University Channel Islands in 2002, and Camarillo Public Library in 2007. Today, Camarillo is the fourth-largest city in Ventura County, one of the safest cities in all of California, and has an enduring legacy that pays homage to its founder.
The Story Behind the White Horse
On the brink of extinction, the Camarillo White Horse was saved, preserving the breed’s, and Camarillo’s, legacy for generations to come.
In addition to essentially founding the city of Camarillo and being a huge proponent of innovation and education, Adolfo Camarillo also had a deep love for horses, specifically his Camarillo White Horses. For generations, the Camarillo family were the only owners and breeders of this blazing white horse, but after Adolfo’s daughter, Carmen, passed away in 1987, the family horses went to auction, going their separate ways from the Camarillo family for the first time in more than 65 years. It soon became apparent, however, that the Camarillo White Horse’s numbers were dwindling.
In an effort to save the breed, a small faction of horse owners founded the Camarillo White Horse Association, creating a breeding program to save the unique equine from extinction. Since its founding in
1992, the association has successfully brought the breed’s numbers up from 12 to 23. And although the Camarillo White Horse no longer lives at Camarillo Ranch, a majority have remained in Ventura County.
“[Camarillo White Horses] are the living history of California and, especially, Camarillo and Ventura County,” says Harold Parker, Adolfo’s great-grandson and president of the Camarillo White Horse Association.
“Adolfo got his first stallion [more than] 100 years ago. Not very many things last that long and it’s very important that this breed is preserved.”
You can see the Camarillo White Horse at annual Camarillo events such as the Camarillo Christmas Parade and Adolfo Camarillo’s Birthday Celebration at the ranch. Go to page 3 for more on this special horse.
With how much Adolfo gave to his community until his death in 1958, it’s no wonder that when Camarillo incorporated in 1964, it took his name as its own.

Home Sweet Home
Step back in time at Camarillo Ranch, a community gathering place.
BY MORGAN MITCHELLAfter Adolfo Camarillo inherited the ranch from his father in 1880, he built a 6,000-square-foot, 14-room Queen Anne Victorian home (for a mere $10,000). His estate was the centerpiece of the family and ranch, and hosted community celebrations for years.
After Adolfo’s death, a majority of the land was sold off, transforming into housing developments and
business parks, and the house fell into disrepair. In 1997, however, the city began restoring the home with nearly five designated acres to establish the Camarillo Ranch Foundation, an organization designed to maintain and run the ranch for generations to come.
Today, docent-led house tours are offered on the weekends, and school groups can trek through on Wednesdays. Inside, you’ll find soaring 12-foot ceilings, intricate woodwork and paneling, and period-appropriate furnishings. Sit a while on the wraparound porch before strolling the peaceful gardens. (The grounds are open Wednesday through Sunday.) Spread a blanket under the sprawling oak trees, sit by the bubbling fountain shaded by towering palms, or wander through the citrus garden. You’ll quickly forget you’re in the middle of the city!
Camarillo Ranch is also available for weddings and other private
events, with the historic grounds providing a striking backdrop for ceremonies and other special occasions. The property also hosts a number of annual public events throughout the year, like Adolfo Camarillo’s Birthday Celebration —a favorite local tradition. Each October, the ranch turns into a massive party with exhibits, live music, arts and crafts, games, and even a giant cake.

Planting the Seed
Camarillo’s agricultural history is an important defining factor that helped establish the town and is why it’s recognized as a major player in the coastal growing region.
Well before California became a state in 1850, the bountiful lands of this locale brought early farmers and ranchers to the area. These hard-working individuals helped shape the future of the township of Camarillo and its economy through ingenuity and industriousness that helped define what we know to be the agricultural industry of the region today.
LAS POSAS BERRIES
EXPLORE CAMARILLO’S UNIQUELY BOUNTIFUL BEGINNINGS.
But what drew homesteaders here? Thanks to the Pleasant Valley region’s rich soils, Mediterranean climate, and natural landscape (not to mention the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad), the ability to grow an array of fresh foods—including barley, wheat, lima beans, avocados, and citrus—made this region just about perfect for a year-round growing season.
Today, the region is renowned for growing crops like berries, lemons, avocados, and tomatoes, as well as cut flowers and nursery plants. (In fact, there’s a pretty good chance that the starter plants, trees, and herbs you see at your local nursery and hardware store came from Camarillo.) Deep roots, indeed. – L.B.

SHOPPING FOR LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCE IS A GREAT WAY TO SUPPORT THE AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY—NOT TO MENTION, IT’S FUN AND DELICIOUS. HERE ARE SEVEN TIPS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR VISITS TO FARM STANDS AND MARKETS.
PLAN OUT YOUR MEALS
There’s nothing worse than heading to the market and coming home with a bunch of beautiful veg you don’t know what to do with. Instead, create a meal plan and shopping list before your visit.
KNOW WHAT’S IN SEASON
Planning out your weekly shopping list only goes so far if you don’t know what’s in season. Refer to our “What’s Growing?” chart (p. 23) to ensure you can get the freshest seasonal foods in Camarillo.
BRING REUSABLE BAGS
While many farmers market stands offer plastic bags, do your part to minimize single-use plastics by using a cute tote to hold your fruits and veggies.
ARRIVE EARLY
The early bird gets the worm when it comes to first dibs on the best produce; plus, farm stands and markets tend to be less crowded earlier in the morning.
HAVE SOME CASH
Most produce vendors offer some form of digital payment system, but it’s always good to have cash on hand just in case the system goes down.

TALK TO YOUR FARMER
Have a question about a squash you’ve never seen before or are wondering how to cook Romanesco? Ask the grower! As the person who grew and harvested the crop, these local farmers are a wealth of knowledge and most likely have some handy tips and tricks up their sleeve.
TRY SOMETHING NEW
Even though you stick to your shopping list, if you see a beautiful bunch of rainbow chard, a cheerful bouquet of flowers, or a juicy basket of strawberries, let inspiration be your guide and buy what’s speaking to you.
Off to Market
If you want to snag some fresh produce, eat an authentic tamale, or find that perfect gift, don’t miss the Camarillo Certified Farmers Market in Old Town. Touted as a “real farmers market,” this yearround Saturday market (8 a.m. to noon) features more than two dozen produce vendors, as well as several local artisans and food purveyors. And with a motto like “grow it, raise it, make it, or bake it,” you know everything is grown and made locally. So bring your reusable bag, your shopping list, and your appetite and make this market your Saturday morning tradition.
The STORE at McGrath Family Farm
Set on a five-acre spread on historic Camarillo farmland, The STORE at McGrath Family Farm grows high-quality organic fruit, vegetables, and herbs while also supporting other farms in Ventura County. For a fun family activity, pick your own strawberries, lettuces, carrots, tomatoes, and seasonal crops (picking times based on weather and availability). Pre-order a bottle of their own Public Domain Wine, pick up some fresh food, and relax at the picnic spot between the crops at this organic, regenerative farm. McGrath Family Farm’s serene setting is ideal for hosting your private party or special event.

This is just one of the daring feats executed by skilled pilots at the Wings Over Camarillo Air Show, an annual event that’s been awing visitors for over 40 years. The show’s extensive history, however, pales in comparison to the broader aviation legacy found in Camarillo.
At one point, the city had two military air stations during World War II. The closest one to town, the
Oxnard Air Force Base, was expanded during the Cold War. It has since shuttered but was transformed into today’s Camarillo Airport. Farther away, the air station at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu remains in use to this day—albeit with quite a few changes—and hosts the Point Mugu Air Show
While the past is, well, the past, you can still experience the region’s aviation history at the WWII Aviation Museum. Run by the nonprofit Commemorative Air Force Southern California (CAF SoCal) wing, the museum celebrates Camarillo’s local history with an impressive collection of historic military aircraft and aviation artifacts. And thanks to the museum’s location at Camarillo Airport, visitors can experience a few of these antique aircraft for themselves. For instance, take to the skies in the only still-flying Marine Mitchell B-25. This 1940s bomber took a volunteer team 23 years to restore, and a flight in it makes for a truly one-of-a-kind adventure. Brunch & Breakfast Bets
Start your day the right way:
Perfectly cooked eggs, seasoned potatoes, ripe seasonal fruit, and a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice (or perhaps a mimosa). Beloved local favorite Braxton’s Kitchen serves up classic dishes, like chicken and waffles drizzled with honey, for the whole family. Prefer a view of planes with your pancakes? Check out Waypoint Cafe, located inside the Camarillo Airport. Enjoy a stack of banana-nut buttermilk pancakes on the outdoor patio while you watch planes take off and land.
At Old Town Cafe, build your own omelet or egg scramble—or try one of the signature creations like the Latin Lover, with chorizo, ham, bacon, peppers, onions, and cheese and topped with smoky, house-made chipotle sauce. Pancake offerings include red velvet, sprinkles, bacon, and pineapple variations, too. Choosy carnivores can pair their favorite protein with eggs at Hidden Cafe: fried chicken, ribeye steak, short ribs, pork chop, chorizo, chile verde, or even loco moco (a Hawaiian specialty with white rice, burger patty, and gravy). – L.J.
It’s practically a law that all Southern California cities offer good Mexican food. And Camarillo certainly delivers. For more than 70 years, El Tecolote has been the go-to destination for locals. Try the Monterey chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce, or the recipe that made them famous: Mike’s original chile verde. Across town, nearly 50-year-old Bobbi’s Mexican Food uses house-butchered meats in its signature burritos and tacos, including barbecue tri-tip and carne asada.
Tiny, 24-hour Rolling Pin Donuts sells all the classics— sprinkled, raised, old-fashioned— plus trendy tastes like “cronuts” (croissant donuts) and Japanese mochi donuts (Sunday–Thursday afternoons only). Balance out the sugar with…tea! At All Things Tea, choose from more than 135 specialty loose-leaf teas, including wellness
blends like turmeric and ginger, to brew at home, or reserve a table for full tea service with sandwiches, scones, and petite sweets. Also offering a wide selection is Epicurean Olive Oils, which has more than 60 fresh oils and vinegars from around the world. Taste a few (or a lot), then purchase a bottle of your favorite.
Catch up with friends over a glass of vino—and some food, too. At The Wine Closet, more than 150 labels from small, familyowned producers are available by the glass, and bites include paninis and assemble-your-own cheese and charcuterie boards. Sheila’s Wine Bar boasts one of the longest wine lists around, with domestic and international options at every price point, plus hearty entrees such as Alaskan halibut with artichoke hearts and wholegrain mustard beurre blanc. – L.J.
Culinary Comforts
Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just relaxing after a long day, a delightful meal is what’s in order. “Gastro-chic” steak and sushi destination Slate Steak, Sushi and Cocktails offers a date-night dinner-for-two special: filet mignon and sides, sushi roll, dessert, and two flutes of champagne. (But the regular menu doesn’t disappoint, either. Try the chicken topped with chardonnay-bacon gravy.) Twenty88 Bistro is an equally delish spot, offering goat cheese egg rolls with apricot-serrano jam as an appetizer and crispy pork belly sliders with Asian slaw and Korean barbecue glaze for the main course.
If seafood is your thing, set sail to Lure Fish House. After a must-order crab cakes starter, tuck into wild-caught sand dabs with lemon caper sauce, or sesame-seared ahi tuna with pineapple coleslaw. Don’t miss the raw bar, gleaming with fresh oysters on ice. For a hearty, meat-focused meal, head to Adolfo Grill & Daily Bar for New Zealand rack of lamb with red wine reduction, French-cut pork chops with blackberry-bourbon glaze, or an Angus burger.
When it comes to Italian food, Camarillo is living la bella vita. A favorite at family-run Lucerne Restaurant is the risotto de la casa, a rich combo of shrimp, sausage, chicken, and sun-dried tomatoes. At long-running Ottavio’s (open since 1969!), classic dishes (spaghetti, lasagna) are served in generous portions. You’re bound to be personally thanked by the friendly owner of Bistro 13; order the lobster ravioli with prosciutto and green peas. And the Manhattan of Camarillo is an Italian steakhouse, offering garlic butter steak and fries and blue cheesestuffed filet mignon. – L.J.
Even though we are all competitors, there’s a really close-knit group and [restaurant] community in Camarillo. We are always willing to help each other out. This group of restaurant owners has been in the industry for a while and there’s just a different attitude.”
– VINCENT PILLARD, restaurateur and owner of Slate Steak, Sushi and Cocktails
PAWSITIVELY GOOD
Coffee Time
Start your day on the right foot with Camarillo’s best coffee spots.
At Common Perk, pair your roast with one of the housemade syrups, including seasonal favorites like pumpkin spice or gingerbread. Common Perk’s refreshing mint mojito iced latte, plus its hearty hoagies or vegan pastries, round out the offerings. Sip in style on the patio with a creamy Café la Reine and pain au chocolat at family-owned Café Ficelle. Old Town’s Tree Lounge Coffee is an intimate spot with single-estate coffee from Beacon Coffee Company and an in-house gallery (p. 35). Combine sweet and savory over brunch with a handcrafted vanilla latte at Old Town Cafe (next to Bella Capri Inn & Suites). Have a cup of joe at Old New York Deli or a caffeinated shake at Make It Healthy for a midday kick. Need a stronger brew? Try an espresso martini from Finney’s Crafthouse or The Local’s Insomnia espresso cocktail. – O.O.

FOR THE SWEET TOOTH
Sugar Rush
Sample the sweets at Bread Basket Cake Company, one of Camarillo’s most beloved bakeries creating specialty cakes for events like the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards and the Oscars gift lounges. For frozen dessert fans, a banana split smothered in fudge and strawberries from local staple Mister Softee is sure to hit the spot. Grab a customizable cup of frozen yogurt and refreshing boba tea from Wild Cherry or espresso gelato from Tifa Chocolate & Gelato. Tifa also has artisan truffles with rotating seasonal designs, as well as permanent flavors like sea salt caramel chocolate. Nibble dainty pastries at teatime (pinkies up!) at family-owned All Things Tea, or grab a cupcake to go from Camarillo Cupcake – O.O.
ALL-IN-ONE FUN
Hit the Mark
In the heart of Old Town, The Mark is your one-stop spot for eating, drinking, and hanging out. Order a made-to-order pizza from Freda’s Kitchen. Go classic with a Margherita or get a little fancy with a speck and arugula pie. And nothing goes better with a slice of pizza than a locally brewed
pint from Topa Topa Brewing Co. (Try the Chief Peak IPA.) To top it all off, grab a scoop from Rori’s Artisanal Creamery
Good luck choosing from the shop’s extensive menu: There’s salted caramel, lemon curd, and cinnamon toast cereal crunch, to name a few. On second thought, better make it a double scoop.
Hang out and chow down with your furry friend.
Start your day with a crepe on the patio at Café Ficelle with your pooch by your side. Meet more four-legged friends outdoors at Braxton’s Kitchen with a menu for both you and your pup. Braxton & Friends’ Special features a nutritious meal of ground beef, rice, butternut squash, peas, carrots, and kidney beans. If your pup doesn’t mind the sounds of planes, grab a meal on the patio with perfect sightlines for takeoffs and landings at Waypoint Cafe. Groove with your furry best friend at Ric’s Restaurant to local live music outside with pub fare for you and special water bowls for your doggo. And for more pup-friendly patios, there’s Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill, D’Amore’s Pizza, Adolfo Grill & Daily Bar, and Presto Pasta – O.O.

WHERE TO
Tie the Knot in Camarillo
WHETHER YOUR DREAM WEDDING LEANS CONVENTIONAL OR FAR FROM IT, CAMARILLO HAS A VENUE TO SUIT EVERY VIBE.
By Lauren EberleWhen planning for the big day, look no further than charming Camarillo. Here, nearly a dozen affordable lodging options make room blocks a breeze, while the city’s amenities, mild year-round temperatures, and central location give guests many reasons to extend their stay beyond the big day.
Traditional
Those who favor classic formality over passing fads will find timeless elegance, impeccable service, and meticulously maintained golf courses at Spanish Hills Club and Las Posas Country Club. Or, consider Sterling Hills Golf Club’s Tuscan-style architecture and sweeping vistas of the distant mountains as the backdrop to your big day. If getting married in a church is more your style, St. Mary Magdalen Chapel, with its stunning white stucco and colorful stained glass, was founded in 1913 by brothers Juan and Adolfo Camarillo.
Natural
Cascading flowers, vine-covered archways, soaring trees glowing with twinkle lights—there’s an unmistakable romance to a garden wedding, especially when paired with Southern California’s sunny climate. In nearby Somis, Hartley Botanica specializes in botanical nuptials, taking advantage of cool ocean breezes. Select from two settings: the Lotus Tea Garden or the tropical Paliuli Gardens. With a landscape designed for the flow of a wedding day, Maravilla Gardens is a secluded oasis where guests can explore the sophisticated grounds and lush lawns in between “I do” and cocktail hour. Intimate events shine at Casi Cielo Vineyards, where parties of 50 to 100 people enjoy views of the Santa Monica Mountains and lush vineyards. Built in 1918, McCormick Home Ranch is a Colonial-style venue surrounded by 11 acres of manicured gardens, palms, and patios.
The weather in Camarillo is ideal, allowing an outdoor wedding season that is nearly year-round. Ventura County allows conditionaluse permits for venues in unincorporated areas where you’ll find agriculture and open space.
City dwellers find themselves at what feels like a destination wedding without having to travel far. The farmland views, soft breezes, sound of birds in the trees, and the water in the fountains make time spent here incredibly relaxing.”
– JEN LOLLER, director of Maravilla GardensRustic
This city’s rich agricultural history sets the scene for charming vintage and rustic weddings. Camarillo Ranch, often called “the Ranch,” is a 4.5-acre property featuring the Camarillo family’s restored 1892 Queen Anne Victorian mansion, a 1905 red barn, and stables, which were once all part of a sprawling 10,000-acre property. Family is the focus of Gerry Ranch, too, where the working farm grows lemons, avocados, and blueberries before coming alive with weddings each weekend. Public Domain at McGrath Family Farm, cradled between organic crops, is a half-acre outdoor space that offers a farm setting with modern amenities.
Out-of-the-Box
It’s your day, so do it your way and select a site that fits your style. At the Camarillo Public Library, for example, California Mission architecture and an open courtyard is a dreamy setting for the latest chapter of your love story. If your idea of an aisle is more, say, unexpected, make it an event to remember at the Camarillo Airport and WWII Aviation Museum. With large hangars offering event space, you can exchange vows surrounded by World War II aircraft and even take flight on a pre-wedding ride.
Put a Ring on It
Scenic spots to pop the question.
Propose to the music of a trickling fountain in Guadalupe Garden at Camarillo Ranch, or under shady boughs at Santa Rosa Valley Park. Be immersed in vibrant flower beds at McGrath Family Farm. Drop to one knee with a sunset view and rolling waves at Point Mugu Afterward, head into town for celebratory bubbles and an indulgent Italian feast at Lucerne Restaurant. Or kayak with your better half on the crystal clear waters at Channel Islands National Park; back on dry land, wind down at the cozy Bella Capri Inn & Suites.
Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District
Looking for a beautiful setting to say your vows? Book your wedding at Pleasant Valley’s Camarillo Grove Park or Community Center. Camarillo Grove Park’s rustic, tree-lined setting offers serenity. Both parks feature full-service amenities and ample space to celebrate.

“Nestled against the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains and minutes from the Pacific Ocean, CSUCI is fortunate to call Camarillo our home,” says CSUCI
president Richard Yao, PhD.
