WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY

Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) Cylinders/cones/tangent surfaces of space curves Generally speaking,developable surfaces are special ruled surfaces. Formed by a family of parallel lines, a cylinder surface S can be modeled if we prescribe a profile curve p and extrude it in some direction r by a parallel extrusion. Cones can be modeled on condition that we present a profile curve p and a vertex point v, in this cpnnection, consisting of all lines connecting v with points of p. Tangent surfaces of space curves; let p , be a polygon with verticals.From this polygon,we get a polyhedral model M, of a developable surface. Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) Developable surfaces have the great advantage that they can be easily covered with sheet metal which means it can be shown vividly and effectively ;plus these surfaces carry a family of straight lines which will simplify the construction work and can narrow the gap between representation and actual building. An example would be the Greenhouse designed by Plasma Studio.

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication represents a process that joins design with production through the use of 3Dtechnology or computer-aided design (CAD) and additive and subtractive manufacturing processes. Being a generative media,digital fabrication posseses unique possibilities, unlike 2 dimensional representaion ,Digital practices have the potential to narrow the gap between representation and building,affording a hypothetically seamless connection betweem design and making.Being a technical pioneer, digital fabrication make it possible for many practioners even students accessible to it.Digital fabrication can not only emilanate the intermidiate process between design and final production, but can give equal emphasis on its aesthetic aspect.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words)

Folding is materially economical,visually appealing,and effective at multiple scales. Being a theorectical concept,formal tactic,most literally material opration , it expands the three dimensional vocabulary of surface by naturally producing deformation and inflection. Folding holds a long history in craft –based practices and product design and it is in this context that digital tools are bridging a traditionally object-oriented practice and architectually scaled work.
