Hence, my future use of graduate study is to propose designs that could balance the needs of urbanization whilst also ROAD maintaining and improving theDIRTY identity of a city.

confidence in studying architectural design. My chosen tertiary institution, the University of Adelaide, has trained numerous famous and influential Singaporean architects over the last century. The three-years of bachelor study was stressful and extremely competitive, as myself and my peers showed our talents and handworks in a wide range of projects. Following this, with the spirit of ‘dream big and bold’, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and apply to the Global 30 master coursework program at Tokyo University. Many traditional buildings may not be saved in the future progression of urban areas, but the spirit and cultural atmosphere shall not be

The term ‘international study’ is not alien to me as my educational path reflects its meaning. Born in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region which accommodates different ethnic minorities in northern China, I was used to studying with classmates from different religious and cultural backgrounds. In 2008, my family moved to Singapore where opened my pathway to exciting new knowledge and broadened my world view due to its multi-racial demographics. Both Singapore-Cambridge O-Level and A-Level certificates enabled me for worldwide choices of tertiary education. Simultaneously, the two-year private sketching course I completed assisted me in building my

The Black Teahouse in Czech Republic Architect: A1 Architects Built for a family that wanted a peaceful, contemplative spot on the southern edge of a garden, the teahouse, completed last year, is actually the third variation of an unostentatious style that architects David Maštálka and Lenka KÅ™emenová developed after they travelled together to Japan while still students at Prague's Academy of Art, Architecture and Design. In Japan, they drank tea in traditional chashitsu. This design is trying to achieve a place that can be described as a modern "micro-space, beautiful and cozy and comfortable to stay in for hours."

3. Maze

The design,Lumière (Light), is inspired by Tanizaki’s quote on emptiness and shadow. This structure has no particular function but empty space for light and shadow. The idea of maze is also brought into the plan, which means visitors would feel lost once they enter the space so that they could sense the darkness around them. Whenever they look up, in contrast, they will be able to see light penetrating into upper area between timber beams. In the centre, the original circular walls and flax rope structure of the Black Teahouse are kept. A plant is positioned right in the centre to emphasize the sense of emptiness and tranquillity. It also symbolises hope under light. The contrast between light and dim shadow in this space fulfil Tanizaki’s idea of empty space of sole light and shadow. Light Square is named after William Light who was one of the founder of South Australia in order to commemorate his effort for leading South Australians through darkness to a brighter future. In that sense, Lumière is designed to lead visitors to pass through dark maze space and find out light in the central area, which imitating the journey of South Australians working for a brighter future by passing through historical down time.

Internal View

The design has three concept: 1.‘Butterfly Roof’: the idea of having a slightly curvy roof is to imitate the lightness of wings of butterfly. 2.Intersection: the interaction left on timber beams are replaced by clear resin for manipulation of light penetration. 3.Maze: concrete maze is used in plan to give a sense of myth. Archi-Shccol-City This design process is a spatial and form derivation study. The source of inspiration comes from a Tango Performance. The aim of this investigation is to obtain interesting shapes and forms from the spatial relationships between the two Tango Performers. After the form investigation, a conceptual design proposal will be introduced as the new design of the current Architectural School.

Form

Shell + Cut To further investigate the physical f o r m o b t a i n e d f r o m t h e Ta n g o performance, a paper model of the shape is required. My recording of this process shows how each surface are joined together. Failure and success are noted down too. Along this process, a more holistic view of this physical form is obtained. The inner space of the model is captivating too. Rotating the final model gives a better understanding of this form and its architectural meaning.

White Concrete The facade is covered by whit concrete to create a peaceful atmosphere of the site.

Wood The interior is covered by wood floor and light timber texture to give a warm atmosphere.

Glass Glass is used to cover the fenestration and at the smae time without damaging the warm interior atmosphere.

Steel The second choice of the facade is steel plate. It gives a cold feeling to the site.

Red Paint The interior wall is covered by red paint to create a artifical sense of space and cold atmosphere . White tile The floor is covered by wihte tiles to give a clean and cold feeling.

Gold Texture Some interior walls are covered by gold texture to give a modern feeling to the space.

Adelaide City Context The thrive of supermarket seems going to put a full stop on the survival of the market soon. The most famous market, the only one that still survives on daily basis in Adelaide, is the central market which located on the western side of Grote Street. There is barely any local markets at the eastern side of the city. Hence, the design concept of integrating a market space and an apartment into one project came to mind. It can help to rejuvenate the neighboring life in the local eastern city area as a stimulate-point. At the same time, it fits the Adelaide City Council policy of widening the small laneway and brings in liveness into these areas. The site is located between Pulteney Street ,Angas Street and a small laneway called Bewes Street. In order to bring vitality into this laneway, my design concept will focus on revitalizing the Bewes street by physically change the streetscape and insert public gathering spaces. Circulation and street view consideration. Site context and project programming are all considered throughout the process. Also, the integration between the market space and the apartment space is also thought through.

ADELAIDE CITY

Site Context

[Street Corner Fresh Market]

Within the 500m walking distance of the site, there are a few commercial areas that provide food, petroleum and accommodations. Few pop-up events on vegetables and fruits sale can be observed in the site which suggests the potential development of a marketing area. Moreover, the abuts residential building also ensure the market customer source. Also, this market project will help to revitalise the regional economic development. It will become a gathering center to improve residents ‘ public activities. Meanwhile, small street parks on Bewes street also enhance the quality of recreational life.

Organised Street Plantation

Shadow map reveals the height relationship of the site surroundings. Two residential buildings on the eastern side are much taller than the rest commercial area. This site is designed to have a max. 40m tall residential projects.

Plantation is well organised because trees cover all main streets. The principal use of London Plane is as ornamental trees, especially in urban areas and by roadsides.

Facility

Based on the site images, there are a variety of activities around the site. Public t ra n s p o r t a t i o n i s n e a r t h e s i t e . C a f e , restaurant, and hotels can be found along the Pultney Street. Moreover, street trees are well organized on both sides of these streets. With both residential areas and commercial facilities next to it, this site is a prime spot for commercial activities. This area has the possibilities to be developed as an Eastern Adelaide city regional market center. However, the major disadvantage of this area is the noise level. Hence, the following design plan may consider moving the design focus away from Pulteney Street to the quieter Bewes Street.
