Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

Sign usually a material expression of the qualities, functions, and properties of the object, but the materiality of the sign is not relevant to its performance. There is no binding relationship between its form and content. A symbol refers to its dynamic object through a formal representation. In the sign, the relationship between its form and content is immaterial. Diagram, different from Signs and Symbols, do not play a representational role for their dynamic object, try to express the physical constructs and concepts on an organizational level. Diagram is a tool to describe relationships and prescribes performances in space. A diagram is usually specific to space and it always has a spatial correlation.

Week One

Precedent Analysis

Image 1(Top Left): Top view of finished model. Image 2(Top right): left view of finished model. Image 3(bottom): back biew of finihsed model.

Roof plan, elevations were imported into Rhino as reference image to ensure the size and scale of model. Models are splited in five different layers from bottom to top. The bottom four layers were created by using extrude commend. Afterwards, Projection were used to confrim the height(y-axis) of top part which create more accurate outline of model.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

Herzberger states that extreme functionality in design makes it rigid and inflexible, that is, it limited freedom to users of the designed object to interpret its function as he pleases. Therefore, the ability to function in architecture should be able to change through different time. A designed object should have ‘accommodating’ potential to make the space more receptive to different situations. Barkow Linbinger’s Summer House frees itself from limitations with respect to circulation, people could come from all directions. The lack of apparent zone creates affordance for people to gather around and within the structure intuitively. A range of activites could be taken place within the place, such as meetings, presentation.

Week Two

Isometric

The south-east isometric view was chosen as it can show the spatial relationships of inbetween and the top. Barkow Linbinger designed a round-shaped open house, without a front and a back, people could come from different directions and have diffierent circulation pathways. Most people would walk around the pavillian and take a seat to a while. Therefore, higher density would occur arund seating area. The continuous structure which doesn’t have exactly defined inside and outside: a little poetic house where to relax. The three half-circle wall form space, the top canopy provides shadow for people seating underneath. The shadowing from different layer overlap creates a different level of privacy. For example, from some view, the seats are less explict than other.

Week Two Diagrams

Circulation

Threshold

People will come from different direction therefore there will be many different pathway. Most people will walk around and stay a while at seating area thus the circulation line overlap most at the seating area.

Three half walls form space but with no apprent entrence. From some perspective, it is closed enough to avoid making the intentions too explicit, yet open enough for people to freely walk in.

Image 2&3. Test different views.

According to elevation, use projection and trim command to trace the outline of the top layer to make it more alike the shape.

7

Test differnt view to check which could show most spatial relationships between each layers.
