WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) The three elementary types of developable surfaces are cylinders, cones and tangent. Cylinder are fromed of a series of parallel lines extrude by a profile line. Cones consists all lines connectinig vetor point with points of profile curves. Tangent of space curves are always connnted by the vertices of a polygon.

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) Understanding of developable surfaces is critical for designers to flexiblly use the geometrical forms. therefore the design can be constructed phycially in reality without conpress the materials. In other words, they are all in form of stright lines or Polylines. Example could be California Stage designeded by John Jasperse, which is made of individual segments and it formed a mrophying structure. It is noteworthy that the achitetural piece could engage directly with the performancers’ movements.

VARIABLE 3D PATTERN

Randomly ordered by 3 different height of trapezoidal bodies.

A line attctor was used to create a diagonal shape camber concave in this temple.

The point attactor was used with 4 differnet typrd of panels.

Line attactor was utilized in this attempt.

3D PANEL TEST PROTOTYPE & TEMPLATE

FIrst attempt to finish a small vision of module for practice whichi give a insight of later handcraft,

Unrollede a few basic shapes of module to testifty the developability and also for make sure there is no overlaop curves ouccrs.

Actually start to combine the 2D temple to 3D Pattern.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital Fabrication used as a method to afford a ‘seamless connetion’ between visual representation and physcial model. it is a way of using digital data to carry out fabrication process. it could helps the designer to express their concepts by producing two dimentional representation in more efficient, easy way. For example, 3D software progrom CAD replaced the traditional drawing and it allow designers to make visible a 3D form prior to construction, it could be viewed form all the perspectives of the module. It is particuarly useful during the refinement satge.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) firstly, Folding compromising effiecieny, econmical and Visually appealling at multiple scales. During the folding process, the materials can span the space and gain ‘stiffness and rigidity’. Secondly, it also transforms a surface to 3D Spatial construst that could be unfolded to 2D temples. It could combine new spaces and territories without losing the ‘native characteristics’ of what is bening folded.

EXPLORING 3D PANELLING

Direction of the angles indicates the trend of the curves . it suggests that line contractor has been utilized in the module to present the lanscape the tmeple as the mountains centred in the island and surround by the more pain massif and small viliages formed by different tribes. the trapezoidal bodies presents the tribes as it shows more spatical and shapes like a tent. The arrangement of grids is perserve to be organic and natural to match the terrain.

UNROLL TEMPLATE OF YOUR FINAL MODEL

The unroll surfaces have been layout in eight different A2 pieces which sent to Laser cut. While print another set directly on A1 iorvy card for backup.

cutting and scoring the temple. scssiors, knife, cutting mat and glue are used.

colour-colour-orientated unrolled surface to match the 3D Models. It prvides the visualised guides help to identify.

Clipps are employed during the final combination stage. it assists in drying the PVA glue.

Add tabs and place the cut line and fold line in different layer for later cutting process.

spry print is used to cover the drain of glue during the handmade stage.
