NEW FACES AT ROME FILM FESTIVAL The capital's film festival takes a new direction
U
nder the stewardship of its newly-appointed artistic director Marco Müller, the seventh International Rome Film Festival has departed from its previous October schedule and this year takes place from 9 – 17 November. The move, which puts Rome between heavyweight festivals Toronto and Venice in September, London in October and Berlin in February, is a strategic attempt to draw more attention to the festival’s Business Street film market, as well as launching winter release movies targeting the holiday box office or angling for Oscar nominations in spring. However it drew heavy criticism from the Turin Festival, which now opens a mere six days after the Rome event closes. Turin initially requested Rome to delay implementing its new dates until 2013 – giving the northern city adequate time to reschedule next year’s festival – but the appeal fell on deaf ears. Although the festival programme is low on American star power it is certainly rich geographically. The 26 countries represented include Japan, Poland, Mexico, Russia, Brazil, Nicaragua, Thailand and the Philippines. The main competition has 15 films, including two movies from US directors: The Motel Life by Gabe and Alan Polsky and Marfa Girl by Larry Clark; the out-of-competition section contains Mental by Australia’s P.J. Hogan, while among the films in the Perspectives Italy section, dedicated to new trends in Italian cinema, is a tribute to Italy’s popular comedian Carlo Verdone. Müller’s journey back to his native Rome began immediately after his unceremonious Christmas dismissal as artistic director of the Venice Film Festival, where he had served for eight years before being replaced by film critic Alberto Barbera. Müller’s Rome nomination was firmly supported by the capital’s mayor Gianni Alemanno, as well as former Lazio governor Renata Polverini, but resisted by then incumbent Rome festival president Gian Luigi Rondi. A protracted power struggle ensued. The nonagenarian Rondi, who served as president since 2008, sought to delay the departure of outgoing artistic director Piera Detassis by at least a year. He eventually gave up and in February was replaced as president by Paolo Ferrari, who had been head of Warner Bros Italia for the last 21 years. On taking up his new role in May, Müller wasted little time putting his stamp on the festival. This year’s eclectic line-up includes an ambitious 60 world premieres, a showcase of new trends in contemporary film, and an array of initiatives devoted to Italian cinema. However during the festival launch on 10 October at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, Müller’s programme was rounded on by journalists for lacking the Hollywood stars associated with his time in Venice. The steelyeyed Müller hit back at his critics, reminding them that he had just four and a half months to organise the festival, rather than a full year when he was in Venice. Festival president Paolo Ferrari (left) and artistic director Marco Müller. He also noted that the Wanted in Rome 7 November 2012
programme contained big names not readily recognisable to western audiences. The most famous Hollywoodiano making an appearance is veteran Sylvester Stallone, star of one of the festival’s principal premieres, Bullet to the Head. Its director is America’s Walter Hill who was responsible for producing the Alien film series and is also known for directing movies starring some of Hollywood’s best-loved tough guys. Stallone will be present when Hill receives Rome’s inaugural Maverick Director Award in recognition of his ground-breaking films. The other major movies premiering in Rome are A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III by Roman Coppola, son of celebrated director Francis Ford Coppola; the animated Rise of the Guardians, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, which is the highlight of the teenage section Alice in the City. As for the persistent rumours about the screening of Django Unchained – Quentin Tarantino’s homage to the spaghetti western genre – Müller teased the assembled journalists at the launch with “Tarantino’s film is not in the programme, but you’ll see him here soon.” He has since clarified that Django Unchained will be presented at the Auditorium in January. In a subsequent interview with Rome daily Il Messaggero, Müller revealed that the lack of big American stars reflects the prevailing “times of austerity and sobriety”. He said he was unwilling to dip into the festival’s €12-million budget to fork out the reported €300,000 fees paid to visiting superstars in the past. He blamed time constraints for being unable to land blockbuster films such as Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln or Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, but nonetheless claimed that “miracles” had been achieved considering he only started in early summer. According to the festival press release, when Müller and his team began drawing up plans he said, “We were not interested in purity, homogeneity, and absoluteness, because they are unproductive.” The festival, which Müller describes variously as “pluralistic”, “alive”, and “in many instances happily contradictory”, is not overly concerned with inter-connecting themes. Müller was assisted in his task of selecting titles by a committee which included Sandra Hebron, who recently departed her post as artistic director of London’s BFI Festival after eight years. One thing that Müller has been extremely keen on is reinforcing the festival’s business aspect. The informal Business Street will see negotiations taking place in the general Via Veneto area from Casa del Cinema in Villa Borghese down to Cinema Barberini, and Müller hopes to attract some 400 international film investors, with a particular nod to Asia and Latin America. It is no coincidence that Müller chose director and screenwriter Francesco Bruni to head the Perspectives jury: Bruni scooped an award for his film Scialla! at the 2011 Venice Controcampo Italiano section – a similar initiative begun by Müller but discontinued by his successor Barbera. Müller also selected another new trends expert with the jury president of the CinemaXXI section, dedicated to cutting-edge works: Glaswegian artist Douglas Gordon, whose cult cinematic installation 24 Hour Psycho featured in last year’s Rome festival. Opening the event is Waiting for the Sea by Russia’s Bakhtyar Khudojnazarov, while the festival ends with the wry comedy A Gun in Each Hand by Catalan director Cesc Gay. In between, there is something for everyone on each of the festival’s eight screens at the Auditorium, the MAXXI Museum of 21st-Century Art and the Cinema Barberini. Andy Devane

EXHIBITIONS ROME COVER ART COVERS FOR WANTED IN ROME 28 Nov-19 Dec This exhibition of covers for Wanted in Rome is in memory of Edith Schloss, artist and art critic, who died in December 2011. On two occasions, in 2010 and 2011, she invited her guests to create covers for the magazine based on the theme of Rome. The idea was to promote a different sort of space – magazine covers – for those she considered to be the best living artists in the city to show their work. This exhibition displays the 23 originals as well as some of the covers that Schloss herself created for the magazine. The show is introduced by Antonio Capaccio and organised by Silvia Stucky at the gallery TRAleVOLTE, Piazza S. Giovanni 1, tel. 0670491663, www.tralevolte.org. 17.00-20.00 except Sat and holidays. NEW PAUL KLEE AND ITALY 9 Oct-27 Feb 2013 A major exhibition dedicated to the relationship between artist Paul Klee and Italy takes place at the National Gallery of Modern Art (GNAM) in Rome. The show comprises about 100 works — both by Klee and other Italian and foreign artists such as Kandinsky, Moholy Nagy, Max Bill, Albers, Licini, Soldati, Perilli and Novelli – and examines the influence of Italian culture and landscapes on Klee's work. Critics have long identified trips to Tunis and Egypt as being significant to the career of the Swiss-German artist; this show highlights the effect that his six Italian visits had on Klee who spent time in Rome, Florence, Naples and Sicily. The exhibition focuses on four key elements of Italy that inspired him: nature, architecture, classicism and music. Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Viale delle Belle Arti 131. 08.30-19.30. exhibition documents the hazardous journey undertaken by merchants, pilgrims and soldiers more than 2,000 years ago across the mountains and deserts of central Asia to trade in luxury goods, to unearth sacred texts and to encounter and dominate distant peoples. These adventurous travels were to lead to the creation of a network of routes grouped to-gether under the evocative name of the “Silk Road”. The exhibition illustrates the numerous different cultures along the Silk Road route with reconstructions of four iconic cities: Chang’an, today’s Xi’an, the cosmopolitan capital of the Chinese Tang Dynasty; Turfan, an oasis city in the Gobi Desert; Samarkand, a major centre of trade and culture; and Baghdad, capital of the Muslim world and seat of the Caliphate. A unique section explores the relationship between certain Italian cities, particularly Venice and Genoa, and the Far East in the final few centuries of the Middle Ages. L’ITALIA DI LE CORBUSIER 18 Oct-17 Feb 2013 This exhibition illustrates the significance and the role played by Italy in Le Corbusier’s artistic training and architectural thinking. Following a chronological and thematic journey, it traces the changes in points of view and interests from which the artist – painter, architect and sculptor – examined Italian culture over the course of his life. It highlights the years of his youth in which he travelled to Italy to study art and the Roman civilisation. It then focuses on his attempts in the 1930s to introduce his ideas to the contemporary city by seeking a commission in Italy. Particular attention is paid to the figure of Le Corbusier the painter and this section includes his works from the Purism period alongside others by Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi and Gino Severini. Lastly, the exhibition features the two most important projects that Le Corbusier worked on in Italy after the war: the new hospital in Venice and the Olivetti Electronic Calculation Centre at Rho, both left unbuilt due to the architect’s death in 1965. VERMEER THE GOLDEN AGE OF DUTCH ART 27 Sept-20 Jan 2013 One could object to this exhibition’s title that the works aren’t only or mainly by Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675); it is rather an exhibition of 17th-century Dutch painting, which includes eight paintings by the great master, of which one is an early copy of an Italian religious painting, and another (“recently reinstated in the body of Vermeer’s work”, the catalogue says) is rather stiff. On the other hand, the quality of many of the 57 works on show is such that one can excuse this promotional ploy. Vermeer’s paintings may be few – the whole of his oeuvre does not include more than 40 pieces – but they are certainly memorable. The Girl with a Red Hat (1665-7), and The Little Street (c.1658), are simply stunning, and masterful are the Young Woman with a Lute (16623), the Woman Standing at a Virginal (c.16702), and the Allegory of the Catholic Faith (c.1670-2). What is it that makes these paintings masterpieces? At first glance one may be struck by the meticulous observation and rendering of courtyards, alleys, back gardens, interiors, clothes, hairstyles, expressions, gestures. And also the colours and textures of fabrics, fruits, metal, wood, plaster... But in some cases – certainly Vermeer, but also de Hooch, ter Borch, Metsu, Ochterveld – what is also extraordinary is the artists’ ability to represent natural light and its effects, and capture the calm, intimate atmospheres of these indoor and outdoor spaces. The exhibition is further enriched by works in other styles by painters such as Carel Fabritius, Gerrit Dou, van Ostade. Scuderie del Quirinale, Via XXIV Maggio16, tel. 0639967500. 10.00-20.00. In September 1999 the first Martha Algerich International Piano Competition took place in Buenos Aires – a competition which not only carries her name but in which she is president of the jury. Argerich inspires a cult following, maybe because of her penchant for cancelling concerts at the last moment. She does not practise much and often sight-reads her pieces during the concert, which accounts for the improvised feeling of her performances. Beethoven wrote three sonatas for violin and piano in A major, and violinist Midori and pianist Ozgur Aydin perform them all during this recital. Of the most famous, the spirited Kreutzer Sonata, Midori says, “I am always struck by the sheer energy and control necessary for the bursts of emotional intensity.” The duo also tackle the emotional force of Webern’s laconic Four Pieces for Violin and Piano and Crumbs’s Four Nocturnes, a hauntingly delicate work with a prevailing sense of suspension of time. THE MAGIC FLUTE ACCORDING TO THE ORCHESTRA OF PIAZZA VITTORIO 5 Dec This vibrant and ethnic re-interpretation of Mozart’s The Magic Flute is becoming something of a classic in itself and returns to the Rome stage following enormous popular and critical success. The magic of jazz and strains of pop, reggae and rock pervade Mozart’s much-loved masterpiece in a mélange made up of the original score and some adapted music thanks to the musical and artistic direction of Mario Tronco who heads the multicultural Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio. Together with Leandro Piccioni, with whom he has arranged the music, he has produced a vision in which Tamino is a Cuban percussionist, Sarastro plays the Andean flute, and the Queen of the Night is an Italian punk with an Arabian gang following. This extraordinary international production has been received with critical and public acclaim as it builds on the universal appeal of Mozart’s opera and transforms it into something entirely new. ROMAEUROPA FESTIVAL 2012 26 Sept-25 Nov This year the festival’s subtitle is “All that we can do” which – as organisers point out, is an exhortation to each of us. This interesting arts festival offers creative experiences, visions and influences of artists which can inspire us and help us understand and interpret our time. The programme has a pluralistic vision offering diverse paths and experiences. There are many big names on the two-month calendar that is especially tantalising for dance enthusiasts. Some
by Linda Bordoni that stand out are those of Bill T. Jones, Akram Khan, Sasha Waltz, Batsheva, Constanza Macras. But there are also lots of lesser-known names as the festival stays true to its mission of promoting new (and possibly iconoclastic) talents and focusing on new creative idioms. There is a fair amount of theatre and drama featuring the likes of William Kentridge and Fanny Ardant. Performances are loosely grouped according to a series of themes: “Wake Up!”, “Crossing the Limit of What is Known”, “All That We Can Do”. DANCE FERRARA LUTZ FORSTER 9 Nov In Portrait of a Dancer. This performance is a touching tribute to the great German choreographer Pina Bausch with whom Lutz Forster worked for many years. He was a member of her Wuppertal company from the 1970s and toured the world with countless productions of hers. In this solo performance Forster reviews his career as a dancer and looks back at the work with outstanding choreographers of his generation such as Susanne Linke, Robert Wilson, and of course Pina Bausch. He focuses on the relationship between art and life, between the artist and the person behind the artist. It is a monologue, narration, and dance solo – full of poetry. ROME BATSHEVA DANCE COMPANY 8, 9 Nov In Deca Dance and Sadeh21, choreography by Ohad Naharin. Tel Aviv’s acclaimed Batsheva Dance Company presents two different dance experiences. When first performed in 2000, Deca Dance celebrated 10 years of Naharin’s work with Batsheva Dance Company. Highlighting many facets of his repertoire, Naharin reconstructed his oeuvre by taking sections of existing works and reorganising them into a fresh experience. The performance offers the public the chance to partake of Naharin’s wide-ranging repertoire, from its most extravagant to its most intimate. Deca Dance continues to evolve to this day. Sadeh21, the choreographer’s most recent work, was developed using Naharin’s Gaga technique in collaboration with the dancers. He created “Gaga” to help the dancer reach a heightened level of physical sensitivity, and find unusual ways to move the body with a relaxed and easy physical fluidity, no matter how complex the movement pattern. “Sadeh”

Put together in 2007 for the popular company’s 25th anniversary, this show is an anthology of the troupe’s work made up of a selection of sad, happy, funny, silly, dramatic tableaux. Pendeleton’s muscular performers are as much gymnasts as dancers. They are impeccably schooled and know how to take full advantage of tricks of the theatre and clever lighting and props. With multiple companies performing seven fulllength works by Pendleton, Momix is the most toured American dance company in the world. Its lasting appeal lies in its ability to astound, entertain and reach out to all kinds of audiences. Teatro Olimpico, Piazza G. da Fabriano, tel. 063265991, www.teatroolimpico.it. BALLETTO DI ROMA 15-18 Nov In Ambiguity, choreography by Michele Pogliani. Pogliani is an award-winning dancer and choreographer who was formed as a dancer in the dynamic New York dance circles of the 1980s and 1990s, and in particular in the company of Lucinda Childs. This is the premiere of Pogliani’s new multidisciplinary work, which comes to life with a mix of dance, text, video clips and body art.
Divided into seven sections it has its roots in “Genesis” and its conclusion in a multi-faceted postmodern vision in which pop, cyberpunk, street art, kitsch and camp find place. Sometimes considered provocative for his use of nudity, Abreu crosses various choreographic styles bringing together dance, theatre and text. In Animal, on a text by Marina Wainer, he is on a quest for those instincts that render us animal, amongst other animals. The work takes the form of a symbolic narration with a progression of images that fade into each other in a fantasy-like setting created by Abreu himself with the help of Irene Cantero for lighting and music. OPERA OPERA NOTES
La Fenice in Venice opens its season with Otello by Verdi and Tristan und Isolde by Wagner to celebrate the bicentenery of the birth of both composers in 1813. The dates of of the productions overlap so that opera goers can see the two works over a period of two days. Myung-Whun Chung conducts both, with Gregory Kunde as Otello, who debuts in the Verdi opera after an excellent performance in the Rossini version. Ian Storey is Tristan and Brigitte Pinter is Isolde in the Wagner opera. The director is Paul Curran who comes to this work after his interesting modern interpretation last June of Britten’s A Midsummer Night's Dream. The opera season in Rome opens with Boccanegra by Verdi conducted by Riccardo Muti and directed by Adrian Nobel in his debut in Italy after numerous productions abroad, the last being his Macbeth at the Metropolitan Opera in New York last March. The audience is
14
invited to immerse itself in the roaring 1920s – a reckless era characterised by lavish parties, foxtrot dancing and empty opulence – and discover more about the mysterious Jay Gatsby and “what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams”. The play is part of John Cabot’s substantial Italy Reads programme which features illuminating lectures about The Great Gatsby and Scott Fitzgerald, by professors Sarah Churchill, Elizabeth Geoghegan and Mary Merva, as well as events specially designed for teachers and students. WILLIAM KENTRIDGE REFUSE THE HOUR 15-18 Nov With William Kentridge, Philip Miller, Dada Masilo, Catherine Meyburgh. This original theatrical experience is closely connected to the South African artist’s “Refuse the Time” installation created for the German “Documenta” contemporary art event and showing at MAXXI. It stems from the question “Is it possible to materialize time on a stage?” and takes the form of a dialogue with physicist Peter Galison, a Harvard professor. In Refuse the Hour Kentridge, with the collaboration of composer Philip Miller, cho-

In English. Teatro Argentina, Largo di Torre Argentina 52. for Romaeuropa Festival. For booking and information tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net. DISGRACE 22-24 Nov By Kornel Mundruczo, based on the work by J.M. Coetzee. Just like Kentridge’s “Refuse the Hour”, this work comes to Rome after major arts festivals across the world. In a way, it too has its roots in South African culture as it is based on the award-winning novel by South African author J.M. Coetzee, however the Hungarian theatre director Mundruczo has adapted Disgrace taking the novel out of its context – post-apartheid South African society – and keeping the heart of Coetzee’s reflection, namely the fear that suddenly appears in a community when upheavals deeply modify its lifestyle and the ancestral scale of its values. For Mundruczo of course, behind South Africa, there is Hungary, but also the European countries that have been subjected to crises of all types that mentally
destabilise people and heighten anxieties: that of losing one’s job, that of opening one’s door to unknown callers, that of experiencing affective solitude. In Hungarian with Italian subtitles. Teatro Vascello, Via G. Carini 78, for Romaeuropa Festival. For booking and information tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net. THE COUNTRY 27 Nov-16 Dec By Martin Crimp with Laura Morante and Gigio Alberti directed by Roberto Andò. In Crimp’s captivating psychological thriller, protagonists Richard and Corrine move to the country for a fresh start, but it is far from rural bliss. Richard is a successful doctor who discovers a young girl, Rebecca, on the side of the road unconscious and brings her back to the family home. The question is why she was on the side of the road, who is she and why did he bring her home? As the play unfolds these questions are answered. The three characters only occupy the stage in pairs in this game of secrets and lies. Crimp’s plays tend to ensure that not all the audience come out with the same answers, leaving you to make up your own mind, while the questions raised ensure you continue to think about the play long after the curtain falls. AN AUSTRALIAN YOUNG LADY IN ROME. Was it you in Naxos on the beach in Agia Anna of the Santana Club at the end of June, duly helmeted cycling to and from the place? Whilst sunbathing you were attentively reading ‘Zorba the Greek’. Our deck chairs were next to yours and on one occasion we exchanged personal views about living in Rome where I have lived myself for a few years. Sandy conversations do not offer apt opportunities to be listened and listen to. So it had been my intention to possibly exchange our contacts to further communicate, by common consent, when back home; but ‘all in favour of my wish was against it’ ! and therefore could not materialize. In fact, the day before you disappeared, we went on a day tour and my above intention dissolved. As an addendum, you may remember - if you are the person I am trying to trace - my mentioning living in Milan. Should my proposal put forward meet with your consent, I would be pleased to have this message acknowledged and come in contact through the efficient services provided by Wanted in Rome. Sergio. advertising@wantedinrome.com.

ponte milvio area - looKing For neW Friends. Hi, I'm an AsianAmerican woman living in the Ponte Milvio area... I am really missing my girlfriends from back home. Am looking for some easy-going English-speaking women who are located in the Ponte Milvio area or about for get-togethers or just to hang-out, gossip and share some laughs. I am open-minded and do not judge people (...harshly, ha ha)... I am married to an Italian man and have a 6 1/2 year old, sweet, sweet boy. If you have kids, it would be an added bonus and if you married to an Italian man, even better! so we can talk about how crazy Italian husbands (and their family) are... but not necessary. Hopefully you like to eat (especially different ethnic foods) because I love to eat and cook, not judgmental nor stuck on social ladders... If you are missing some of your friends too and am interested and ready to start a new friendship, send me an email. rebecca.neilson@eifl.net. italian / english eXChange. Just moved to Rome to au pair and am living in the Nuovo Salario area. Would love to meet to have a conversation exchange over coffee one day! Email: louhelenjohns@yahoo.co.uk.
