INFRASTRUCTURE

Full speed ahead at Tiburtina

Rome’s second station is being turned into a hub for high-speed trains in a project that will transform the surrounding area Laura Clarke

I

n early December passengers leaving the metro at Tiburtina station in northeast Rome had a surprise. In addition to exiting directly into a tunnel leading to the railway station or, via a long underpass, onto the busy Circonvallazione Nomentana, they could emerge onto a stylish square below ground level, known as Piazza Ipogea, that links the metro station with the road and mainline station above. This area contains the railway ticket office, bookshop, newsagent and bar, and other shops and services are ready to open shortly. Piazza Ipogea is the first stage in a €304 million project by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the wholly-owned subsidiary of state railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), to turn Rome’s second mainline station into the principal hub for Italy’s new high-speed rail network (see box). Tiburtina has been chosen over Termini, which is closer to the centre of Rome, because it is located on the main rail route around the city and so is better suited to services running up and down the country, although some high-speed trains will continue to stop at Termini. The project will also consolidate Tiburtina as a major city transport hub with numerous bus terminals, a medium and long-distance coach station, metro B stop and rail link to Fiumicino airport. If all goes to plan the new station should be complete by the end of 2010, while the reorganisation of the surrounding road network will take another year. The plans for the new station have been drawn up by Paolo Desideri of Rome’s Studio Tecnico ABDR architetti associati and are centred on an existing metal platform passing above the railway tracks. This will support a glass and steel “boulevard” or gallery containing shops and services for passengers and giving direct access to the platforms beneath. The gallery will be accessible from both sides of the railway via two new entrances, providing a symbolic bridge between the affluent Nomentano district to the west and the poorer Pietralata district to the east, which historically have been separated by the tracks. 2

The existing platform above the railway tracks will support the new station gallery.

Italy’s high-speed railway In December 2009 rail passengers could travel the whole of Italy’s 1,000 km high-speed network from Turin in the north to Salerno in the south – via Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples – for the first time, cutting travel time by between 17 and 37 minutes between the cities served. Before then the high-speed trains, known as the Frecciarossa (Red Arrows), were already in operation on parts of the network but it was only with the inauguration of the last new sections between Florence and Bologna, Milan and Novara and Naples and Rome in late 2009 that the network could function fully. Shorter high-speed sections are also in operation between Milan and Treviglio and between Padua and Mestre in the north, while further high-speed links are planned or under construction in the north and south and on cross-border routes via a series of controversial and expensive tunnels. The project is part of the European Union’s Transeuropean Transport Network and so far it has cost €32 billion. It has not been without opposition. Residents and environmental groups in Piedmont’s Val de Susa have mobilised under the banner No TAV against the creation of a link to Lyon in France. They are contesting the environmental and social impact of the project and the excessive costs. In other parts of the country commuters have been angered by disruptions and delays to services on local routes due to poor infrastructure and lack of investment as resources have been channelled into the high-speed development. Since December 2009 the high-speed service has come under fire for disruptions and delays partly due to bad weather. Currently high-speed services are operated exclusively by FS’s whollyowned subsidiary Trenitalia. However in 2011 a private railway operator, Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV), a joint venture by a group of Italian businessmen including Fiat president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, Banca Intesa-S. Paolo, French partner Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français and a few other smaller shareholders, will launch services on Italy’s TAV lines with 25 trains purchased from France’s Alstom Transport at a cost of €650 million.

20 January 2010

The design is the result of an international competition dating back to 2001, although work only began in October 2007, allegedly due to problems with finance and disagreements with the city council. Construction is being undertaken in stages to allow the mainline station to continue to function during the works, albeit with some inconveniences for travellers. In late December demolition of the old station building got underway to make way for the new entrance on the Nomentano side and trains are now accessible only through Piazza Ipogea. Meanwhile the metal platform above the railway tracks has been given new foundations to support the future gallery. Work is also underway on the new entrance on the Pietralata side of the tracks, from which passengers will have access not only to the gallery above the platforms but also to the metro B station on the Nomentano side via a tunnel beneath the railway tracks.

Kid’s Activities Guide 2009 Up-to-date information on: playgroups, outings, services for the disabled, shopping, sports and culture for kids.

Services for passengers are now located in Piazza Ipogea (above and below) at Tiburtina.

The development also involves the reorganisation of the road system around the station. A new bypass along the Pietralata side of the railway tracks – the so-called Nuova Circonvallazione Interna – is being built at a cost of ₏168 million (paid for mainly by the city) to relieve traffic in the area. Once all other work is finished, the ugly flyovers on the Circonvallazione Nomentana will be demolished and the road beneath will be turned into a tree-lined avenue. There will also be new car parks and green open spaces. People living and working in the area have mixed feelings about the project, with some fearing an increase in traffic and social problems especially in the immediate vicinity of the station, and others hopeful that it will mean the general requalification of an area that has become increasingly run down in recent years. The new station might also breathe new life into old plans to decentralise part of the public administration and other services to Pietralata under the so-called Sistema Direzionale Orientale (SDO), which was once at the heart of the city’s urban development plan to relocate public offices out of the city centre. The project has been revised numerous times since its conception in the late 1950s but has never come to fruition.

Bullying in Rome’s schools

Barberini facelift

The first study on bullying in Rome’s schools shows that 29 per cent of those interviewed had suffered some form of bullying but that 74 per cent of these had never spoken about it before. The sample was made up of 12 to 15 year olds in six schools. The survey, published in the daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, was coordinated by an anticrime division of the questura (police headquarters) and devised by an organisation called Pair Education in which groups of teachers, parents, psychologists and police work with students to identify bullying and how to deal with it. Other results of the questionnaire found that most of those bullied (60.3 per cent) had been bullied at school but that 20.1 per cent were bullied at home and 19.5 per cent in other places. Most of the bullying (60 per cent) was verbal, 27 per cent physical and 12.3 per cent both. 84 per cent of the victims were bullied by friends and others of the same age while 12 per cent were bullied by their siblings.

Rome’s city government has given the go-ahead for a street improvement scheme for the area from Piazza Barberini to Via Boncompagni, near the United States embassy. Pavements will be upgraded, new lighting will be installed and the cobblestone areas will be re-laid. Piazza Barberini is the site of Bernini’s famous Tritone fountain, and the tree-lined stretch of road up to the American embassy is home to some of the most prestigious old hotels in the capital.

Marathon registrations up

Formula One for Rome A Formula One race in Rome is one lap closer now that the promoter, Maurizio Flammini, and the president of Formula One management and administration, Bernie Ecclestone, have agreed to develop a project for a race along the streets of EUR. The first trial race could be in 2012 and then, depending on its success, it would be added to the world circuit the following year. Flammini now has the go-ahead he needs to begin the bureaucratic process for the necessary local permits for the event. The course would be in the east and north of EUR along Viale dell’Arte, Viale delle Tre Fontane and Via di Val Fiorita, away from the main throughways of Via Cristoforo Colombo and Via Laurentina. The project is ambitious and Flammini claims that it would lead to the creation of some 9,000 jobs, pump €800 million into the economy and attract several hundred thousand extra tourists to the city each year. Above all it would spearhead the renewal of the EUR area of Rome with its museums, shops and the up-and-coming congress centre designed by Massimiliano Fuksas. The project would also help to boost Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno’s dreams for alternative forms of tourism in Rome, which include a bid to host the Olympics in 2020. However politicians from north Italy, particularly members of the right-wing Lega Nord, are opposed to the project on the grounds that it would attract business away from the existing Italian Grand Prix in the northern city of Monza. 8

daytime and five night time buses on the route between Piazza Venezia and Largo Argentina. Outside the prime minister’s residence in Palazzo Grazioli, and the more famous Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, it was the most convenient stop for people going to areas around the Pantheon, for students at the famous Visconti secondary school in Piazza del Collegio Romano and for tourists on their way from the Colosseum to St Peter’s by public transport. Busy services such as the 64, 70, 87, 186 and 492 have been affected and some routes have been diverted away from the area. The removal has been met by protests from local residents and shopkeepers, who have organised a petition calling for the stop to be reinstated. Check the ATAC website for the alternative stops and routes. www.atac.roma.it

Piazza Barberini, famous for the Tritone fountain by Bernini, is to get a new look under a street improvement scheme in the historic centre.

Work here is a continuation of the renewal of the Via Veneto area, which was one of the most fashionable parts of the city in the 1960s. The project will cost about €4.5 million and should start within six months. It is part of a larger scheme for the improvement of the historic centre. Work is also planned for the Tridente, which is between Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Popolo, Via del Babuino and Via Ripetta. The city has also said that by the end of January it will be asking for tenders for the improvement scheme to Piazza S. Silvestro, home of Rome’s main post office and the English-language church of the same name.

Bus stop removed The busy bus stop in Via del Plebiscito in front of the Rome residence of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has been removed for security reasons. It was the stopping point for 13

Over 10,000 runners have already registered for Rome’s 2010 marathon on 21 March. Most of them are foreigners: 5,240 (15 per cent more than in 2009), compared with 5,105 Italians (five per cent more than in 2009). On this showing registrations should reach last year’s total of 15,000. Rome’s 2009 marathon was the world’s sixth fastest according to the finishing time of the top ten men and women runners. It ranked behind London, which was top of the list, but ahead of New York, which came 11th. Rome was 15th in terms of the number of people who finished the course. Registration for the 2010 Rome marathon costs €55 before 28 January and €65 before 8 March; it then rises to €100. www.maratonadiroma.it

More museum visitors Visitors to Rome’s city museums totalled over 1,450,000 at the end of 2009, a ten per cent rise over 2008. The Capitoline Museums saw a 15 per cent increase over the same period to reach over 500,000 visitors. Figures at less popular museums such as the Planetarium and the Biopark were up, as were those at socalled minor museums such as the relative newcomer to the system, Carlo Bilotti, with its collection of contemporary art, and the Centrale Montemartini on Via Ostiense, off the usual tourist beat. Much of the increase is attributed to better marketing, which included special exhibitions, longer opening hours, extra activities for children and occasional concerts. There are 17 museums under the city administration. For the full list see www.museiincomuneroma.it. 20 January 2010

Rami Be’er’s Aide Memoire, inspired by the Holocaust, examines the struggle between the individual and society.

mu s i c

Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company. 28 Jan. In Aide Memoire, choreography by Rami Be’er. This company, which started as a small group of enthusiasts in the early 1970s, is unique amongst modern dance groups both in Israel and abroad. Although based in Kibbutz Ga’aton near the Lebanese border, its members come from settlements all over the country. In recent years the company’s policy of encouraging new talent has provided a launch-pad for many emerging dancers and it has become one of the foremost dance companies in Israel. The young choreographer Be’er has said that as someone who belongs to a family of Holocaust survivors, in this work he has chosen to deal with a subject that has occupied his mind for many years: “the influence of memory of the Holocaust on our lives.” And while Aide Memoire does not describe the Holocaust, it is a work that examines the enslavement of the memory to its ravages, and the underlying message is of the struggle between the individual and society. Emma Dante’s Le Pulle, meaning “prostitutes” in Sicilian dialect, tells the story of five desperate women.

Rome Emma Dante. Until 25 Jan. Teatro Valle pays tribute to the young and successful Sicilian playwright, stage and opera director and actress Emma Dante. Born in 1967, Dante graduated from the Silvio d’Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome in 1991. After returning to Palermo in 1999, she founded the Sud Costa Occidentale Theatre Company, with which she staged mPalermo in the local dialect in 2001. Since then her production – which has a strong social component and has openly denounced the presence of the mafia in her homeland – has been prolific and has been received with much critical acclaim. In 2009 she was asked to direct a new production of the opera Carmen for the inauguration of the season at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. At Teatro Valle you can catch her latest work, Le Pulle, and Acquasanta – Studio sui personaggi e non sulla storia. Teatro Valle, Via del Teatro Valle 21, tel. 066869049, www.teatrovalle.it.

Diario dell’anima. Omaggio a Arvo Pärt. 23-29 Jan. Arvo Pärt is considered one of the most inventive contemporary minimalist composers. Born in Estonia in 1935, he studied at Tallinn conservatory in the 1950s and 1960s while working at the same time for Estonian radio. Because of difficulties with the Soviet regime, mainly because of his profound Russian Orthodox faith, he emigrated to Austria and then to Germany in 1982 before returning to live in Tallinn at the beginning of the century. He was influenced by Shostakovich and by Schonberg’s 12-tone system but in the mid 1970s he made a breakthrough into his own style, which he calls tinninabuli. His music is deeply mystical and influenced by the Gregorian chant and Orthodox liturgical music. One of his most famous works is Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten (1977). For details see Music page 19.

La Persia Qajar. Fotografi italiani in Iran 1848-1864. 29 Jan-5 April. This exhibition is dedicated to a group of Italian photographers who worked in Persia in the years between 1848 and 1864, during the reign of Naseroddin Shah of the Qajar dynasty. This was a very interesting and significant moment in Persian history as Naseroddin Shah was the first Persian king to travel to Europe. During his three trips he became interested in photography and brought back the equipment needed to develop his passion. He also tried to implement the European models of the postal system, railways and press and he attempted to write a new civil code. Calcografia, Via della Stamperia 6, tel. 0669980242. 10.0019.00. dance Ferrara Compania Mercedes Ruiz. 30 Jan. In Mi ultimo segreto, choreography by Mercedes Ruiz. This most recent work by upcoming flamenco star Ruiz is an essential and sophisticated performance involving three dancers, two singers, two guitars, double-bass and percussions. Awarded the 2009 Wolfsburg Moviementos Tanzpreis for the Best European Ballerina of the Year, Ruiz is rapidly becoming one of today’s major flamenco personalities. Her style and technique are solidly rooted in tradition but her outlook is contemporary. The original music by Santiago Lara is conducted and performed by Lara himself at the head of an unusual ensemble. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0532202675, www.teatrocomunaleferrara.it. Also in Vicenza on 31 Jan at Teatro Comunale tel. 0444324442.

Milan Compagnia della Rancia. 27 Jan-14 Feb. In Cats, choreography by Daniel Ezralow. It has been around for almost 30 years, and finally the all-singing, all-dancing musical spectacular based on the poems from T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats has an official Italian version. Italy’s only real “musical company”, the Compagnia della Rancia, has managed to secure the services of successful choreographer Daniel Ezralow of “Momix” and “Amici” fame in the hope of increasing its popularity. However, Anglophones and those who have seen Cats in London or on Broadway will most probably be disappointed. Teatro Allianz, tel. 02488577516. Croatian National Ballet Theatre. 25, 26 Jan. In Don Quixote, choreography by Valentina Ganibalova from Petipa. This much-loved classical ballet is based on the epic masterpiece by Miguel de Cervantes. The most successful choreography for the ballet – which has been reworked in many different keys – was created by Marius Petipa at the height of his career. Contrary to the novel, the figures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are not heavily involved in the ballet’s storyline. Its best moment is a wonderful wedding pas de deux, performed by young lovers Kitri and Basilio. Teatro Ventaglio Smeraldo, tel. 0236639300, www.teatrosmeraldo.it. Momix. 2-28 Feb. In Bothanica, choreography by Moses Pendleton. The much loved company of virtuoso, acrobatic dancers does its bit in this age of ecological awareness with choreographer Moses Pendleton’s latest crowd-pleasing creation. As always, the troupe performs to a backdrop of clever set designs and tricks of light which create breathtaking optical illusions. All this, completed by the sounds of nature and an eclectic music score that ranges from Vivaldi to Peter Gabriel, succeeds in transporting the spectators into a world of fantasy in which bodies are transformed into trees or insects. The ultimate aim of the production is to illustrate the existing relationship between humans and nature through the concept of metamorphosis. Pendleton has in fact taken Pablo Neruda’s idea about metamorphosis as the core element of his show. For Momix lovers and for a much wider audience than usually attends the ballet. Teatro Olimpico, Piazza Gentile da Fabriano, tel. 063265991. For information tel. 063201752.

Opera Notes Paolo Di Nicola writes about the operas opening the seasons in Ancona and Venice. In Ancona Sonia Ganassi tackles two modern operas instead of her usual Rossini and Bellini repertoire and at La Fenice in Venice director Graham Vick is bound to surpirse as usual with his production of Manon Lascaut.

d’Italia, promoted by the French embassy. The prize-winning, and much loved, author Pennac says that Bartleby by Melville is one of those stories that has always fascinated him. FOOD AND DRINK

Anyone for sushi? Brette A. Jackson

T

here’s a new foreign food fad in Rome, and it looks like it’s here to stay: sushi. When it comes to food, Romans tend to be rather orthodox; even the trendiest wine bars and restaurants serve dishes that anyone’s grandmother would eat. Yet the distinct flavour of raw fish and vinegared rice has managed to become an acquired taste. In collaboration with Japanese chefs, several Romans have opened small takeaway sushi shops that are embellished with Japanese-inspired decor and seating. Boxes of sushi (albeit of inferior quality) can even be found at some of the city’s supermarkets. Pricey sushi restaurants, typically frequented by Japanese tourists, have had a presence in Rome for years. But now the Romans are co-opting the “sushi experience” and fresh, affordable pre-packaged versions of the delicacy are becoming increasingly easy to find throughout the city centre. This light, healthy and aesthetically pleasing food originated in an ancient practice of preserving fish by packing it in fermented rice. Once the fish was properly cured, the rice was actually discarded. The advent of the refrigerator made fresh fish readily available and the rice took on a more integral role; it was seasoned with vinegar, pressed into a small, elongated shape and topped with various types of seafood. Sushi (su meaning vinegar and shi an abbreviation for meshi, the Japanese word for rice) not only became the emblematic food of Japan, but is considered a culinary art form. Here’s a list of shops with catering services that are successfully establishing this dish of Japanese origin into the Roman diet. Alessio Tesciuba discovered sushi when the parents of a Japanese friend invited him to one of the city’s noted Japanese restaurants. He fell in love with the food but realised its lofty price tag meant he’d be unlikely to eat much of it again. This led him to develop a concept of selling high quality, pre-packaged sushi, sashimi (thin slices of raw fish) and maki (rice wrapped in seaweed paper, or nori), as well as other Japanese foods and beverages, in small stores that would have the feel of a sushi bar-cum-ramen shop. And so Daruma Sushi – named after the round Japanese doll believed to be a talisman of good luck – was born. In 2003 Tesciuba opened the first of his four takeaway sushi shops (there’s now a Daruma Sushi restaurant in EUR too) on Via di Panico, near Ponte S. Angelo. The enterprise was hugely successful and has since been replicated, making him the “progenitor” of Rome’s current takeaway sushi businesses. All of the sushi, sashimi and maki are made by expert Japanese chefs in his pristine laboratorio (workshop) located in the modern Saxa Rubra neighbourhood north of 20 January 2010

Romans are developing a taste for Japanese food judging by the number of takeaway sushi shops in the city centre

the city centre, and is delivered to each shop twice daily to ensure freshness. Selections vary according to market availability and hail primarily from Mediterranean waters, such as Sicilian tuna, sea bass, amberjack (ricciola), octopus, shrimp, etc. There’s also salmon from Norway and preserved eel and salmon roe from Japan. The entrepreneurial Tesciuba wants to start a national franchise and has plans to open shops in other European cities as well. SushiSushi is the brainchild of sushi enthusiasts (and lovers of Japanese culture) Marina Tavoletti and her husband Renato Prosperi, who opened this sleek little shop (located in a 14th-century palazzo not far from the Pantheon) in 2006. More than just a place to purchase sushi, Japanese teas, beers and sake (rice wine), the artfully designed shop is also a place to find modern Japanese, German, Italian and Nordic jewellery, pottery and textiles. It also sells Japanese porcelain knives and various sushi paraphernalia. The fish selection varies according to availability, and is prepared in the kitchen by a notable Japanese chef, whose clientele includes the commissary of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Generally you can find seafood from the Mediterranean such as bass, tuna, shrimp and amberjack, salmon from Norway and eel and salmon roe from Japan. The maki and hand rolls are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate; two notable mentions are the salmon and mango maki and a spicy tuna tartare hand roll. Situated just off Campo de’ Fiori, Sushihouse is a tiny sushi takeaway joint that definitely appeals to a more youthful, predominantly Roman clientele. Twins Valerio and Andrea Francesca Roselle, along with their partner Patrizio Di Martino (who, ironically, keeps exotic fish as a hobby), opened the doors to this colourful, upbeat store in September 2009 and offer a fresh selection of sushi and maki that’s made in their private kitchen (located in the periphery of the city) by a group of Japanese sushi chefs. The sushi, sashimi and maki arrive twice daily and include a selection (depending on the market) of Mediterranean fish such as bass, tuna, amberjack and squid, as well as Norwegian salmon and Japanese eel. They also offer other Japanese products such as ramen bowls, a selection of Japanese beers and fun sushi-inspired key chains. In early November 2009, childhood friends Andrea Colucci and Marco Giudice opened Sushi San, a minimalist takeaway sushi shop located on a narrow street near Palazzo Spada. Their love of Japanese food and culture was the impetus for this venture, and as Colucci’s family owns a fish distribution business in Fiumicino, they’re confident that their access to high quality, fresh seafood will win them more than a few fans. The sushi, sashimi and maki are made on the premises by in-house Japanese chefs, and you can watch them work at their craft through a large glass window looking into the kitchen. The majority of the fish are of Mediterranean origin and, depending on availability, you can sample tuna, sea scallops, bass, bream or amberjack. Foreign selections include Norwegian salmon and Japanese eel and salmon roe. They also offer a choice selection of Japanese beer and sake. If all goes well, their next move is to open a Sushi San at Fiumicino airport. Daruma Sushi. Via dei Serpenti 1 (Rione Monti), tel. 0648931003; Via di Panico 65 (Castel S.
