t the moment Rome is offering some of the most stimulating historical art shows in the world. That its private galleries have always concerned themselves with live contemporary shows is known only to a few elect who are vitally interested in following the scene, none of them tourists. As a painter myself, and as a critic busy first in New York and later in Rome, so familiar with both worlds for decades, I have often mused about them in print. Most of my friends are artists here, and I got to know them through art, in galleries and private gatherings. Mary Wilsey, the editor of Wanted in Rome, has asked me to choose some among them to create covers for the magazine. (You may have noticed I have done some myself in the past.) Making cover art by hand for magazines is an approach that is getting ever rarer on the planet. It is a special approach: your image must catch the eye and deliver a special punch which is easy to understand and in a subliminal way moves you to cry Ha! and smile, or cry. Professional photos are striking and timely, but efforts by easel artists and professional illustrators tend to be more immediately fresh and winning. I have chosen ten committed artists now active in Rome. They all show regularly in the private galleries and contemporary museums and are part of a community of awake, hip personages not only aware of new directions, but also making new discoveries themselves and seeking adventures of their own. A critic (Enzo Bilardello) has called Primarosa Cesarini Sforza, our first cover artist, “A life force”. Always immensely busy, she has made paintings, collages, pastels, and has stitched drawings, using childhood images, maps, volcanoes, the bird life of Italy, all beautifully intricate, for her symbols. Her work is among the recent acquisitions of MACRO (Rome’s museum of contemporary art). Here is her intriguing comment on our most imposing ancient artefact, the Colosseum. The people we have invited practice a wide range of the styles current today. Capaccio belongs to a group dubbed Astrazione Povera or Plain Abstraction, mostly doing without colour but sharply engaging. Paul Klerr is not easy to define, but his sculpture made of fragile paper and found things, his intricate whimsical line work in drawings, are enthrallingly lyrical. Giancarlino’s bright gawky celebrations of something close to street art or child’s art makes him our own Basquiat, rough and easy, deep and hilarious. Mirri’s expressionism, dryly witty and fine, is of today and yesterday, adventurous and manifold and close to the more sombre Transavanguardia. Spengler, a wizard with technique, is head over heels in love with all the possibilities of paint itself. Stucky is influenced by oriental patterns and tidyness, as well as being a brilliant photographer. Granata and Benci work with generous shapes, sturdy design, one close to realism, the other to futurist abstraction. What I myself do is for others to describe and some have called it semi-abstraction – that is shape and colour held by the lines of a mythical story. Installation and conceptual art and other trends of the moment of course don’t work for Cover Art, but I believe we have chosen wisely in trying to focus on some examples from the kaleidoscopic range of today’s art activities in Rome. The grassroots movement that began in 2009 took purple so as not to be too obviously colour-coded. CITY MACRO and MAXXI Rome’s civic museum of contemporary art, otherwise known as MACRO, in Via Reggio Emilia is closed until 31 May inclusive in preparation for its summer programme of events and exhibitions. MACRO Estate opens to the public on 1 June with solo shows of work by New York-based performance artist Aaron Young, Jorge Peris from Spain and multimedia Portuguese artist Joao Louro as well as works from MACRO’s own collection and two special projects by Jacob Hashimoto from the US and Italy’s Luca Trevisani. The exhibitions run until 22 August. Before then, the new extension to MACRO designed by the French architect Odile Decq will be open for a preview (by invitation only) from 27-30 May. The new wing, which is under construction directly behind the museum’s current site, has space for exhibitions and events, a lecture hall and services for visitors. If all goes to plan it should open its doors to the public in 2011. The programme at MACRO Future in the ex-slaughterhouse in Testaccio, including the new space for exhibitions and cultural production La Pelanda, continues throughout April and May. The preview of the Decq extension and opening of MACRO Estate coincides with the official inauguration of another important centre for contemporary art in the capital. This is the newly built museum for art and architecture of the 21st century (MAXXI) in the Flaminio district, designed by Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. The museum will open on 30 May with five temporary exhibitions: Spazio; Gino de Dominicis. L’immortale; Kutlug Ataman. Mesopotamian dramaturgies; Luigi Moretti, 1907-1973; and Geografie Italiane. Note that the annual Settimana della Cultura runs from 16 to 25 April, when all state-run museums, monuments, galleries and archaeological sites are open to the public free of charge. In Rome city-run museums and sites will also be participating, although the Capitoline Museums and the Ara Pacis will be charging for entry to temporary exhibitions. See also What’s on page 17. The other three recently restored talking statues are in high-traffic areas of Rome and they can be easily overlooked if you do not know where to find them. The Abate Luigi statue is in a corner of Piazza Vidoni beside the church of S. Andrea della Valle. The Madame Lucrezia statue is located in a corner on the side of S. Marco’s church just off Piazza Venezia, while the Facchino statue is a fountain on Via Lata running from Via del Corso into Piazza del Collegio Romano.

On 21 March 2010 Lady Susana Walton passed away peacefully at her home on the island of Ischia at the age of 83. Lady Walton was the owner and creator of La Mortella, private gardens located in Forio, Ischia. She was mentioned in the article about Ischia that appeared in Wanted in Rome on 31 March, which went to press before her death. Lady Walton was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1926, and married English composer Sir William Walton in 1948. The couple bought a piece of land in Ischia and began creating their garden with the help of British landscape architect Russell Page. Page helped her design the grounds, but the realisation of the project, including the choice of plants, was Lady Walton’s work. After the death of her husband in 1983, Lady Walton continued to dedicate herself to the garden and to her husband’s memory by creating the Fondazione William Walton. This foundation promotes the culture of music and caring for La Mortella, while also organising visits and concerts for the public and music courses for young students. Lady Walton continued to manage the garden up until her death, with her most recent project being the creation of the Greek Theatre, which holds symphonic open-air concerts. She wrote two books, Behind the Façade, a biography of William Walton, and La Mortella – An Italian Garden Paradise, her history of the garden. Her memorial in the garden – the Nymphaeum – is a green enclosure of seats around a small basin that bubbles with water, and is where her ashes will be buried. The inscription there reads: "This green arbour is dedicated to Susana, who loved tenderly, worked with passion and believed in immortality." 14 April 2010

The British vocal quartet The Hilliard Ensemble. Photo by Friedrun Reinhold.

Rome The Hilliard Ensemble. 20 April. The British male vocal quartet (two tenors, a countertenor and a baritone) has made a name for itself primarily for its performances of early music. Here it presents Adieu mes Amours, a programme of songs and madrigals of the Renaissance by Cornish, Henry VIII, Bennet, Weelker, Farnaby, Arcadelt, Crockett, Verdelot, de Rore and Merulo, as well as a piece written for the ensemble by the Italian composer Fabio Vacchi. The programme replaces Officium, the result of a longstanding partnership between The Hilliard Ensemble and the Norwegian saxophonist and composer Jan Garbarek, which was originally scheduled for this date. Over the decades the quartet has worked closely with living composers and in 2008 it appeared at the Edinburgh International Festival with the première of a music theatre project, I went to the house but did not enter, by Heiner Goebbels. 20.30. Istituzione Universitaria dei Concerti, Aula Magna, Piazzale Aldo Moro 5. For booking and information tel. 063610051, www.concertiiuc.it.

Paul Taylor Dance Company. 24 April. In Changes, Beloved Renegade and Brandenburgs, choreography by Paul Taylor. The great American choreographer Paul Taylor turns 80 this year. More impressive still is the fact that in the 56 years since he started a company he has choreographed more than 130 works. Taylor does not indulge in what is called “dance-theater” but is a choreographer with a literary imagination, and his dances come peopled with characters and cultural references. Changes offers a portrait of 1960s-era youth set to music by the “Mamas and the Papas”; Beloved Renegade is more exalted, using epigraphs from Walt Whitman’s poetry to reflect upon love and death; and in the words of dance critic Mary Clarke, “Beauty is the only word for Brandenburgs…[which] celebrates the good things in life. Such a radiant, seamless flow of invention that the choreography seems an entirely natural way of moving to this music.” Teatro Comunale Pavarotti, tel. 0592033010, www.teatrocomunalemodena.it.

Paul Taylor’s Brandenburgs celebrates the good things in life.

Settimana della Cultura. 16-25 April. The annual “Week of Culture” is really an open invitation to relish Italy’s innumerable cultural treasures. For the occasion state-owned sites, from monuments to museums, from archaeological areas to archives and public libraries, are open free of charge. To make the experience even more special, thousands of events are organised as accompaniment. So look out for concerts and recitals, guided visits and lectures, exhibitions and extended opening hours. In Rome city-run museums and monuments are also taking part. For information see www.beniculturali.it or www.museiincomune.it.

Compagnia Virgilio Sieni. 19 April. In L’Ultimo Giorno per Noi, choreography by Virgilio Sieni. This work is the third part of a trilogy inspired by Lucretius’s De Rerum Natura, in particular the sixth book speaking of earthly forces that man cannot control: earthquakes, eruptions and, at the end of the work, the plague of Athens. Sieni explains: “The bodies of those dying children supporting their parents, the flocks of agonising bodies seeking comfort and contact, precede a void that is both material and substance of man’s journey towards the other.” Teatro Ponchielli, tel. 0472022001, www.teatroponchielli.it.

dance Bolzano The Goteborg Ballet. 16 April. In 3xBoléro: a triple-bill featuring the works Walking Mad, OreloB and Episode 17, choreographies by Johan Inger, Kenneth Kvarnstrom and Alexander Ekman. 3xBoléro is a programme of works inspired by Maurice Ravel’s classic Boléro. Inger’s Walking Mad is set to music by Ravel and Arvo Pärt; Kvarnstrom’s OreloB is a futuristic work with stark lighting and innovative partnering; and acclaimed young Swedish choreographer Ekman’s Episode 17 is something of a theatrical whirlwind made up of 17 brief sketches, each one featuring a possible interpretation of Ravel’s Boléro. Cremona Nederlands Dans Theater II. 15 April. In Sleepless, choreography by Jiri Kylián, and Minus 16, choreography by Ohad Naharin. Sleepless has been described as a tense, enigmatic work softened by the physical beauty of the dancers themselves and by the perfection of Kylián’s constructions. In Minus 16 the company doubles its stage presence by enticing 20 adventurous audience members to become part of Naharin’s marvellously manic, musically varied (cha-cha, mambo, techno and traditional Israeli) choreographic masterpiece. The Opera Show. 20-25 April. Created, choreographed and directed by Mitch Sebastian. This show is really a compendium of lyrical arias we all know and love, performed by four singers, five dancers and eight musicians. Beethoven’s Ode to Joy is done with torches, Puccini’s Nessun Dorma with starlight and there’s some fine dancing in the drinking song from La Traviata. One must just give up on the story and go with the flow. Teatro Arcimboldi, tel. 02641142212 / 214, www.teatoarcimboldi.it. Los Vivancos. 20 April-2 May. In 7 Hermanos. Especially for those who enjoy the “Tap Dogs” genre, this promises to be an energetic evening with the seven Vivancos brothers who combine flamenco with classical ballet and a dose of exuberant street-dance. The brothers merge dance virtuosity with acrobatic prowess and an extraordinary sense of rhythm, while also revealing a more playful, humorous side. The performance is produced, directed and choreographed by all seven brothers, with an original score. Teatro Smeraldo, tel. 0236639300, www.teatrosmeraldo.it.

Opera Notes Placido Domingo should be singing in Simon Boccanegra, as a baritone rather than a tenor, at La Scala mid-April, but much depends on his health after his treatment for cancer. In Rome S. Cecilia presents two operas in concert form, Una tragedia fiorentino and Gianni Schicchi, the former dramatic and the later comic.

Tanzania to produce Overmeer wine. Tanzania is to consolidate its position as the second largest wine producer in Africa after South Africa by making the semi-sweet and fruity white wine Overmeer from locally grown grapes, the East African newspaper reports. The project is being led by Tanzania Distilleries, one of the leading producers of alcoholic beverages in the country. The company has been piloting the production of Overmeer using grapes grown in the highlands of Dodoma since 2006 with input from South Africa’s Distell wine and spirits group, which owns 35 per cent. Tanzanian Distilleries already produces a variety of dry whites and reds from a combination of Makutopora, Chenin blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown on 150 hectares of vineyards in the fertile area around Dodoma. Henry Moore at Tate Britain. 4 Feb- 8 Aug. Moore’s sculptures have become so familiar that it is difficult to remember how startling they must have been when they first appeared in the 1930s. However, this exhibition does manage to take a fresh look at this most famous of British sculptors, not least in the sketches and drawings along the walls, which illustrate the initial stages of the sculpture, and how Moore envisaged his large works within the landscape. The room with the drawings of miners is both a reminder of the sculptor’s background and of the terrible working conditions of the men underground, bent double or even reclining as they hack at the coal face, a position that is repeated again and again in Moore’s sculpture. The drawings of Londoners, lying huddled in the underground to avoid the German bombing in world war two, evoke shades of the shrunken, emaciated shadows who emerged from concentration camps throughout Germany at the end of the same war. After these it is a relief to arrive at the last room, to Moore’s huge sculptures made of elm, as shining and beautifully veined as any classical marble Greek or Roman masterpiece. The roses of Rome Spring is the ideal time to visit the many lovely rose gardens in and around the Eternal City Helene Pizzi

Rome’s municipal rose garden on the slopes of the Aventine hill.

W

hat a wonderful period this is. The air teases our senses with the smells and fragrances of spring and the roses are in full bloom. Here are some of the many interesting gardens that are open to the public in and near Rome.

14.30-18.00 April-June, 15.00-18.30 July-September and 14.30-16.00 October and November; a contribution of €10 is requested while children under 11 enter free. From Rome take Via Pontina and exit at Cisterna di Latina. Follow signs to Doganella di Ninfa. For information tel. 066873056, www.fondazionecaetani.org.

La Landriana This garden 40 km south of Rome opens the spring gardening season with its 15th annual garden fair, Primavera alla Landriana, on 23-25 April. Specialised nurseries and exhibitors will have booths and it is an excellent opportunity to add a few roses and other plants to your garden. The ten-hectare garden, created by the Marchesa Lavinia Taverna, was made around the family’s country home on a vast farming estate that was purchased in the 1950s. When Taverna began the task of turning a rough field into a garden she had no idea how to go about it or what to plant. She realised that she needed help and in 1967 the English landscape architect Russell Page was called in to give the garden structure. Taverna then continued to expand the garden, creating garden rooms and secret walks and experimenting with Mediterranean climate plants. La Landriana is now considered the most important post-war garden in Italy. It is open to the public during the April fair and has 32 separate garden rooms, including many featuring spectacular displays of roses. One of the outstanding ones has been planted entirely with Mutabilis roses, another with a collection of old roses, classic roses and newer ones, such as the English roses by David Austin, which spill down a hill towards a small lake. Still another is the White Walk, planted with white flowering bulbs, plants and roses galore. La Landriana, Via Campo di Carne 51, Tor S. Lorenzo. Primavera alla Landriana is open 10.00-19.00. The garden is also seasonally open on Sundays, but call beforehand for opening times. To get there, take Via Pontina or the coastal road to Ardea. For further information tel. 0691014140 or email info@landriana.com.

Ninfa April and May are the best months to visit Ninfa to see the wonderful bloom of old roses. The Oasis of Ninfa was created by the Caetani family in the ruins of a mediaeval town. The Caetani came here for picnics and brought cuttings of roses from their villa’s garden. One of these roses was General Schablikine, a French rose by Nabonnard dating from 1878, which can now be seen here and there throughout the garden in the form of shoulder-high shrubs loaded with beautiful deep pink blooms with copper overtones. Along the entrance walk is a trimmed hedge of R. roxburghii plena, a rare rose introduced from China in 1820. High walls are covered with roses that were planted decades ago and now grow freely in this lovely place. The garden has a unique protected microclimate and spring water in abundance, making it lush and thrilling to visit. Monumento Naturale “Giardino di Ninfa”. The garden is open on the first Saturday and Sunday of the month until October and on the third Sunday of the month in April, May and June, as well as on 25 April, 2 June and 1 November. Opening hours are 09.00-12.00 and 22

Rome’s botanical garden The botanical garden of Rome belongs to La Sapienza University and is open to the public. It lies between the river Tiber and the slopes of the Janiculum hill on the edge of Trastevere. The botanical rose garden section, planted with the help of the late Italian plantsman Stelvio Coggiatti, is particularly interesting as it was designed to lead visitors through the history of the rose. The collection includes wild, or species, roses and the earliest cultivated roses. There are sections with Alba, Gallica, Damask, Bourbon roses, etc, and the paths lead visitors down the hill, past huge shrub roses and pergolas covered with bloom, all the way to the modern roses section. This is a relaxed garden where the roses have been allowed to grow as they wish, blooming with abundance and not minding competitive weeds and grasses. It is also known for its important collection of palms and for its herb garden, laid out with raised beds like a mediaeval medicinal garden. There are other areas that should not be missed, including the one housing native flora and the succulents. Orto Botanico, Largo Cristina di Svezia 24, tel. 066864193. 09.0017.30 (18.30 in summer), closed Sundays, holidays and August.

Rome’s municipal rose garden Rome’s municipal rose garden on the Aventine hill consists of two rose gardens. The upper one houses the rose collection and the lower one is where the international rose trials are held every year. This year it is open to the public from 16 May, after the rose trials, until the end of June. Here the roses of the future can be seen first-hand. Roseto Comunale, Via di Valle Murcia. To get there, take the metro B line to Circo Massimo, from where it is a five-minute walk. For information and free guided visits tel. 065746810. Entrance is from 09.00 until late afternoon and is free of charge.

The rose garden of Valleranello This wonderful private rose garden created by Maresa del Bufalo, off Via Laurentina just beyond the Grande Raccordo Anulare, is a must when in Rome and receives visitors from all over the world. Roses spill from trees, climb over pergolas and bloom in profusion wherever you turn. The fragrance of the old roses completes the enjoyment. The collection of over 1,000 varieties includes the huge climbing rose Luciano del Bufalo, born in this garden as the result of a cross between various hybrid Moschata and R. multiflora, and which can now be seen in botanical collections the world over. Giardino delle Rose di Valleranello, Via Darwin 300. The garden is open by reservation from mid-April to early June, 09.00-10.00 and 17.00-19.00. To book tel. 065012536 or 335/8388170. 14 April 2010
