editorial Thinking about rubbish Mary Wilsey

Residents of the historic centre participate actively in the new differentiated rubbish collection scheme.

ust inside the main door to the building two women were having an anxious discussion over the rubbish bins. One bin was labelled organic and the other non-recyclables. So where were they to leave their paper? A passing inhabitant advised them that they had to take it to the new eco-friendly rubbish vehicles that wait on the corner on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. “But we are leaving tomorrow,” wailed the women. “We won’t be here. What shall we do?” The passerby stopped to think. “I really don’t know,” she said. “It’s all very complicated now,” she muttered as she scurried up the stairs. And indeed it is complicated. Rather than talking about where to park their car, these days residents in the historic centre converse about rubbish and recycling. There isn’t a household or a business that has not been affected by the new system that has been rolled out over the last few months. Some people love the new recycling rules; others hate them. But one thing is certain: gone are the old days when you could throw anything away, every day, knowing that the city rubbish collection company, AMA, would pass each morning for the door-to-door collection. Although the rules are complicated, and the times of collection are not always convenient, they have been devised with considerable thought. Just before last Christmas each household in the historic centre received a small, beautifully designed green bucket and a stock of brown paper bags with reinforced bottoms to fit into it. This was for organic waste. The buckets had holes in them to let the air circulate and the brown bags had markings to indicate how far up the rubbish should go. The Christmas package also included about 50 white and 50 green plastic sacks, white for paper and green for glass, plastic and metal. Then came the new condominium bins, some labelled organic waste, others non-recyclables. All this was accompanied by elaborate instructions for use. Organics and non-recyclables would be collected on the old house-tohouse system, but only three times a week instead of every day. However – and this was the real sticking point – the sacks for paper and glass-plastic-metal had to be delivered personally twice a week to the new carts that would wait at designated points in each area, from Piazza del Popolo to Piazza Venezia, from Via Giulia to Via del Babuino. If you missed the 07.30-08.30 shift you could catch the 08.30-09.30 or the 09.30-10.30 one. But what happened if the sacks were too many or too heavy? What happened if you were a mother on a tight schedule to get children to school before going on to the office? What happened if you were ill or old? In buildings around the historic centre arguments broke out about who would take the sacks to the carts. Portieri (caretakers) asked to be paid more for managing the rubbish collection. And residents, who had probably never talked to each other before, had animated conversations about their rubbish tax – why should they pay it if they, rather than AMA, were doing all the work? Most people were convinced that anyway AMA was just emptying everything into the same tip and that recycling was a myth. Sacks began to pile up in dark spaces off the internal courtyards or under the communal stairs because residents either would not, or could not, take their sacks of paper or plastic, glass and metal out to the rubbish carts. Five months later most people have resolved the logistics of delivering their sacks to the AMA trucks. However there are still grumblings about what will happen in the summer when organic waste is taken away only every two days instead of daily. There are still doubts as to whether the carefully separated rubbish is really recycled. AMA insists that it is and says that the only problem is when people put things into the wrong sack or bin. Unless we follow the trucks to the tips it is impossible to know whether what AMA says is true or false, but at least most of us now think hard before we throw rubbish away; does the dirty plastic packaging around the supermarket-packed meat go into the green sack for plastics or the bin for non-recyclables? I’m still not sure. Wanted in Rome

s energy prices go up, you’d think that sunny Italy would be rushing to exploit one of its prize natural resources: the sun. This option is gradually catching on, but more often in rural areas than in strictly zoned urban ones. Given the relative rarity of such activity, we were intrigued when work began on the roof of a parish primary school, Istituto Divino Amore, right across the street in Monteverde Vecchio. Rome Bobby McFerrin. 20 May. Presented by Musica per Roma. Best known for his 1988 hit Don’t Worry be Happy, McFerrin is as much at home with jazz as he is with folk and classical music. He is a versatile vocalist and conductor and has worked with Yo-Yo Ma, Herbie Hancock, Jack Nicholson and Robbie Williams. In addition he is a wonderful stage performer and his appearances always have a touch of the unpredictable about them. Born in New York in the 1950s, McFerrin grew up in a musical family and his father performed regularly at the city’s Metropolitan Opera. He has toured as a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony and the London Philharmonic among others. 21.00. Letterature 2010. Festival Internazionale di Roma. 20 May-22 June. At its ninth edition, the festival that celebrates international writers and the written word returns to the magnificent stage in the Basilica di Massenzio. The theme this year is La Vita Dolce. Il ritmo del pensiero, a clear reference to the 1960s of Federico Fellini. In keeping with tradition, the programme presents ten evening events, each one focusing on a particular sub-theme. In all 16 writers have been asked to write a text inspired by the theme, as well as selecting an excerpt from a published work translated into Italian. The novelty this year is that seven philosophers and an economist have been invited to participate and will interact with the authors on stage. Live music and a DJ set provide the backdrop to the readings. Some big names to look for include Tahmina Anam, Joyce Carol Oates, Herta Muller, Sapphire, Kathy Reichs and Elizabeth Strout. Entry is free, but tickets must be picked up at least two hours before the event begins at a specially constructed box office in Via dei Fori Imperiali. Protests at opera houses At press time opera and music programmes across Italy were experiencing disruptions and cancellations due to protests by musicians and technicians at opera houses and other venues over a government decree reforming the funding and management of state-supported music foundations. The opening performance of Wagner’s Das Rheingold at La Scala in Milan on 13 May was among events that had been affected. For further information contact the opera theatres directly.

Milan Das Rheingold by Wagner. 13-29 May. Conducted by Daniel Barenboim, directed by Guy Cassiers, with René Pape, Jan Buchwald, Marco Jentzsch, Stephan Rugamer, Katharina Kammerloher. Teatro alla Scala, tel. 027203744, www.teatroallascala.org. See Opera Notes.

Das Rheingold opens Wagner’s Ring Cycle, which will be staged in its entirety at La Scala over the next four seasons. Daniel Barenboim conducts and Guy Cassiers directs all four productions in order to guarantee continuity. In Palermo the opera house is staging Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, with Dimitra Theodossiou in the title role. She has recently sung in the other two Tudor works by Donizetti, Anna Bolena and Roberto Devereux.

theatre Copenhagen. 11-23 May. By Michael Frayn, with Umberto Orsini, Massimo Popolizio, Giuliana Lojodice, directed by Mauro Avogadro. This is a play about two men in a complex relationship who come together in the afterlife to understand their friendship and its strains. These men are not, however, ordinary: they are Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, whose work was foundational in quantum mechanics and atomic physics. The event they strive to understand is a meeting in occupied Copenhagen during world war two. The meeting was uncomfortable, for Bohr was on one side in the war and Heisenberg on the other. Neither spoke or wrote directly about the event and its impact, but it dominates discussion about the play. Teatro Eliseo, Via Nazionale 183, tel. 0648919372, www.teatroeliseo.it.

Il Dolore. 11-23 May. By Marguerite Duras, with Mariangela Melato, directed by Massimo Luconi. This controversial and semi-autobiographical work by Duras was published in 1985, but was drawn from diaries she supposedly wrote during world war two. Known in English as War: A Memoir, it is a collection of texts recounting her experiences of the Nazi occupation of France and the effect of war on individual identity. She confuses the identities of the characters, including her own, to show the similarities between heroes and villains and underlines the fact that as humans we all share similar traits and emotions. Teatro Valle, Via del Teatro Valle 21, tel. 066869049, www.teatrovalle.it. Teatri di Vetro. 14-23 May. The main purpose of this drama festival, in its fourth edition, is to encourage emerging companies and young formations to show their work on mainstream stages. There is also a section dedicated to dance/theatre and the two collateral events, “Romaeuropa Webfactory” and “Nu factory”, should create new openings for contemporary art. Teatri di Vetro is one of the very few initiatives dedicated to independent fringe theatre in Rome. Performances take place in various venues. For information Teatro Palladium, Piazza Bartolomeo Romano, tel. 0657332768, www.teatro-palladium.it.

Paolo Di Nicola British School at Rome. 14-29 May: exhibition entitled Fascism in Ruins/Fascismo Abbandonato by photographer Dan Dubowitz preceded by an introduction by the historian Patrick Duerden. Mon-Sat 16.30-19.00. 19 May: City of Rome lecture by Clare Rowan entitled Building ideology in Severan Rome (18.00). 20 May: literary event during which Silvana Colella interviews Simon Mawer, author of The Glass Room, which was nominated for The Man Booker Prize 2009 (18.00). 26 May: City of Rome lecture by Robert Coates-Stephens on The Forum Romanum in the Byzantine period (18.00). Via A. Gramsci 61, tel. 063264939, www.bsr.ac.uk. Forum Austriaco di Cultura. 19-20 May: international conference in memory of Wendelin Schmidt-Dengler on Letterature del Danubio.
