ome of the people sitting under the columns looked bored, others indifferent. All were carrying bulging bags and some clutched bottles of water, as though afraid they would not find anything to drink again for days. All of them were poorly dressed; T-shirts, ragged trousers or shorts and cheap-looking shoes. Every now and then a group would get up, as though ordered to do so, and the individuals would jostle one another in tight formation out of the square, without so much as a glance at the ordinary life around them. An outsider, going in the opposite direction, stood back, preferring to let the unhappy-looking mass of people pass by rather than break through its ranks. In another scene, just off the same square, a cleanly-dressed couple sat quietly side by side on the steps of a luxury hotel. They seemed content with their lot and said “good afternoon” politely to a passer-by. A traveller from another world might assume that the people in the first scenario were poor, displaced and bewildered people, searching for a better life, while those in the second scene were a happy couple sunning themselves on a spring afternoon. There was only one certain clue for the unsuspecting traveller from another world. In front of the well-behaved, quiet couple there was a green plastic bowl, containing a rosary, a card of some revered saint and a couple of coins. If the stranger had watched long enough perhaps another passer-by, treated to the polite “good afternoon”, would have thrown a couple more coins into the begging bowl. Who decides that the noisy and often bad-mannered tourists who now crowd many city squares and monuments worldwide are a precious commodity to be courted, protected and guided along the way, while their fellow but less fortunate travellers, perhaps escaping from poverty or famine elsewhere, are disreputable beings to be swept carelessly from place to place? This is the question that contemporary visual and performing artists will explore over the next two weeks (10-24 June) at the Romanian Academy in this year’s edition of Spazi Aperti. The academy, which stands opposite the British School at Rome in Valle Giulia, has invited over 30 fellows from 11 cultural academies in Rome, as well as Italian artists and guest performers from Romania, to delve into this uncomfortable theme under the title Tourists and Vagabonds. On the opening night visitors will be given an entry visa, some of which will receive a green stamp (reminiscent of the prized American green card maybe?) and others a red one. The choice of who gets which stamp on entry is totally arbitrary. From then on what happens to the visitor on the green (tourist) or red (vagabond) route through the academy and its internal studios will be different. Who decides the treatment and the rules for travel along the way? In the context of this year’s Spazi Aperti the participating artists have been invited to determine their own set of rules within their spaces in the academy. They set their own boundaries and their own regulations for entry and exit, just as countries have theirs. They may be fluid and inviting, to create a sense of well-being and of inter-acting identities, or they may be rigid barriers (like the Berlin and the Israeli walls maybe?), setting demarcation lines to underline difference and to keep people in or out. For the two weeks of Spazi Aperti – which started from very small beginnings eight years ago but which now receives funding from the Romanian government – the artists will have the power to manipulate and determine identities, reflecting in their own way on what happens on the national and international scene. On the opening night there is a concert by the Shukar Collective, which has taken traditional gypsy music and re-orchestrated it with new electronic technology. There is also a dance performance with choreography by Vava Stefanescu, the artistic director of the Centrul National di Dansului Bucharest (CNDB), which was the only contemporary dance institute in Romania when it was set up only six years ago. The centre now holds weekly performances and workshops for Romanian and international contemporary dancers and organises an annual dance season. Stefanescu’s work Quartet for a Microphone (Cvartet pentru o lavaliera), for four dancers, looks at “the other” and raises questions about limits and limitations and the boundaries between tolerance and promiscuity. On 15 June there is a special evening with Terry Adkins, an installation artist and musician from the fine arts department of the University of Pennsylvania, who won the American Academy’s Rome prize for the visual arts 2009. In his work he selects little known figures who have had a transformative influence on history. He then reexamines their legacy within their environment using drawing, sculpture, music and gesture. In Rome he is looking at the influence of historical figures from Africa on the city. In the Romanian Academy the contemporary arts programme for the next two weeks (dance, music and the visual arts) is throwing down a challenge to onlookers. What are the powers in the contemporary globalised world that permit goods and money to flow increasingly rapidly and easily across boundaries, but set ever-increasing barriers to the free movement of certain types of people? Who are the powers that draw and erase real and psychological frontiers? Who is it that decides that tourists (mainly from the rich and developed world) are important while vagabonds (usually from the poorer, smaller and developing countries) are not? Who and what constructs these arbitrary identities and manipulates the treatment each category receives? Mary Wilsey Spazi Aperti. From 10-24 June. The Romanian Academy, Piazza José de S. Martin 1, tel. 063208024, www.spaziaperti.org, www.accadromania.it. THE GREATEST BOOKS BY DANIELLE STEEL to sell as brand new. Please contact 338 / 8354932.

racter. However a quick look reveals that it features only one opera, three ballets, a selection of classical, contemporary and pop music events, and lots and lots of drama – most of it in Italian. The opera in question opens the festival and it is Hans Werner Henze’s Goko no Eiko (18-20 June), which was composed in 1988 for the Deutsche Oper Berlin from a German libretto (Das Verretene Meer The Betrayed Sea) based on the novel by Yukio Mishima. Subsequently Henze had the German libretto translated into Japanese and composed 50 minutes of new music; it is this version that will be staged in Spoleto for the first time. For dance fans the Lars Lubovitch Dance Company (25-27 June) and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet (1-3 July) perform at the wonderful Teatro Romano, while the Hamburg Ballet presents pieces choreographed by John Neumeier in Piazza del Duomo (2, 3 July). Opera Notes In this issue Paolo Di Nicola writes about two French operas, Manon by Massenet and Faust by Gounod, to be performed in June and July. Manon, first performed in Paris in 1884, was an immediate success. However Faust was reworked and corrected by Gounod several times in the decade after it was first performed in Paris in 1859 until its final version, which is the one performed today.

Lithuanian director Eimuntas Nekrosius brings Gounod’s Faust to Milan. Photo by D. Matvejevc.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. 22, 23 June. In Songs of the Wanderers, choreography by Lin Hwai-Min. For the Festival Internazionale di Villa Adriana. First staged in 1995, Songs of the Wanderers is the signature work of Lin Hwai-min’s Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Asia’s leading contemporary dance company. The choreography blends eastern and western dance styles and demands absolute focus and control from the performers who, at times, appear to have been transformed from human beings into body sculptures, with startling imagery evoking a quest for spiritual enlightenment through experience and suffering. Festival Dreamtime 2010. 11-14 June. The four-day event with artists from all over the world, breathes new life into dance training, the creative process of dancers and dialogue. Dreamtime 2010 hosts companies from four continents. The programme includes the exotic traditional south Indian dance on wheelchairs, performed by the Bharatuatyam group, and a reflection on artist Frida Kahlo’s life and works by the Infinity Dance Theatre of New York. Choreographers Joseph Fontano and Susanna Beltrami have created two new works dealing with “the limits of the able body”, while the Spanish collective Psico Ballet, led by Maite Leon, proposes dance-theatre involving different abilities. English theatre in Rome Caroline Prosser

Williams, and Nuts, a bilingual play by Teresa Pascarelli. “In December,” adds Paternostro, “we have one of London’s hottest directors, Amelia Nicholson, coming to direct [Harold Pinter’s Betrayal]. This gives the expat audience a chance to see high-caliber English production without having to hop on a plane.” For information info@independentenglishtheatre.com, www.independentenglishtheatre.com. Miracle Players Founded in 1999, the group performs comic adaptations of ancient Roman history every summer in the Roman Forum. Characterised by Monty Python-style humour, educational content and simple props, the shows are described as “meaningful but light-hearted.” This year the company is staging The History of Rome – Part 1, a collection of highlights from previous performances that follow the fortunes and misfortunes of the Eternal City and its protagonists. Performances (see What's on page 16 for details) – held outdoors in the Mamertine prison – are free, just leave a tip. For information tel. 0670393427, info@miracleplayers.org, www.miracleplayers.org.

Gaby Ford’s English Theatre of Rome presented the world premiere of Finishing the Kitchen, written and directed by Patricia Gaborik, in February.

F

ortunately living in Rome doesn’t mean missing out on entertainment in English as the city’s large Anglophone community provides a ready audience for theatre in original language. The English Theatre of Rome is the busiest company with nearly 80 productions to its name. But that’s not all – there’s lots to choose from. Arts in English This is a non-profit cultural association formed in 2005 to promote the English language and international culture through the performing arts. The company usually presents at least one musical theatre production a year in Rome or Ostia and it also organises workshops in music, drama and dance and other cultural events. Past productions include West Side Story (2005), Fame (2007) and Oz, the Musical (2008). On 11-12 June Arts in English is presenting The Audition, based on the famous 1975 Broadway musical A Chorus line, at the Teatro della Cometa in Rome. It was chosen as one of 13 regional theatrical companies to participate in the annual Rassegna Tuttinscena festival for amateur theatre companies in and around Rome. Tickets must be booked in advance; contact Jayne Solesbury on tel. 331/6438266. For information and to take part on stage or backstage artsinenglish@yahoo.it, www.artsinenglish.it. Eternal Lines This is a new company set up in 2009 by Douglas Dean, a professional actor and a regular on Rome’s theatre circuit. Dean aims to offer variety and selects works “that people might not necessarily have heard of.” His first two productions were Patrick Marber’s Closer and Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good. Dean admits having to “really like” the play he directs. Productions next season are set to include The Women of Troy by Euripides. For information eternallines@yahoo.com. Independent English Theatre of Rome This is a new company of professional English-speaking directors, actors and backstage crew. The artistic director, Sandra Paternostro, is an actress of Italian-German origin whose father was the London correspondent for the Italian state broadcaster RAI, “bringing England to the Italians.” It struck her that, here in Rome, she might “bring Italy to the English.” So in addition to classic theatre, the company also stages bilingual productions. The 2009 programme included Shear Madness, directed by G. 9 June 2010

Rome’s Comedy Night This monthly stand-up comedy night began in November 2009 and is run by Stephanie Tyrrell and Marsha De Salvatore, who also perform regularly with the English Theatre of Rome. De Salvatore explains: “I have always dreamed of doing comedy... I live in a city where comedy in English does not exist and Italian comedy is bad. I was inspired by a friend and professional actor who said ‘Well, if you want to perform it then create it’; that’s where the idea came from.” The 2009/2010 season ended at the Abbey Theatre Pub near Piazza Navona on 28 May. Now the organisers are seeking a new, bigger venue ahead of the opening of the 2010/2011 season on 30 September; events will be held every last Friday of the month as before. For information birdie.numnum@live.co.uk. Rome Savoyards Taking its name from London’s Savoy Theatre, The Rome Savoyards was formed by Sandra Provost over 25 years ago as a non-profit, lowbudget organisation and it produced a different Gilbert and Sullivan operetta every year. Today, the company tends to perform Shakespeare or other classics; past performances have included A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Its aim is quality and entertainment, and the cast and crew – who “perform for fun and for free” – usually include both native and non-native English speakers from many different walks of life. The Rome Savoyards is performing Black Comedy by British dramatist Peter Shaffer from 15-20 June at Teatro S. Genesio, Via Podgora 1, tel. 063223432. For information and bookings tel. 347/8248661 or 320/3099873, playsinrome@yahoo.com, www.romesavoyards.it. The English Theatre of Rome The English Theatre of Rome was founded as Off Night Repertory in 1996 by American actress and director Gaby Ford. Its season spans five categories: a classic play, a work by a contemporary author, a world premiere, a work by a female playwright and a bilingual production, which Ford says “ensures the public sees something new and fresh. Most people who choose to live abroad are open to this sort of thing, and this is crucial to grass roots theatre.” Casts are a mix of pros and amateurs, who often go on to further success. Shows are held at Teatro L’Arciliuto in Piazza Montevecchio 5, in what was once an ancient Roman villa. The next project is a free play reading workshop over the summer, starting on 9 June and meeting the first week of every month thereafter; the first meeting will include a casting session for next season’s production of the Pulitzer prizewinning play Our Town by Thornton Wilder, which is due to open mid-October.
