editorial The Estate Romana comes around again Mary Wilsey

From opera in the Baths of Caracalla (above, the 2008 production of Verdi's Aida, photo © Corrado Maria Falsini) to reggae by the little lake in Villa Ada (below), Rome’s summer cultural programme has something for everyone.

T

he list of events for summer evenings in Rome this year looks good and is long enough to satisfy almost every taste in every part of town. But the season has had an inauspicious start. The opening night of the Teatro dell’Opera’s programme at the Baths of Caracalla was called off in protest against the government’s budget cuts, which will hit opera theatres especially hard this autumn. The Caracalla festival is the oldest and the best-known of the city’s summer events and although it doesn’t have the same draw as the Verona opera festival in north Italy it is still a must for many tourists who love the spectacular setting in the Roman ruins. But whereas performances of Romeo and Giulietta, Aida or Rigoletto among the towering archaeological remains once had a romantic pull, now drowned out by the sound of cars all round and planes overhead, the Opera’s summer season also has to compete with over 150 other events on the city’s summer programme. There is a huge choice. You can go to Latin American evenings at the Capannelle racecourse close to Ciampino airport, if you can face the crowds and the noise. You can enjoy world music by the romantic lake in Villa Ada in the north. You can hear big names on the international music scene in the amazing cavea at the Auditorium Parco della Musica without even realising that there is traffic racing down Corso Francia just above you. You can enjoy the cool of Villa Doria Pamphilj with dance and concerts. For jazz you can head off to the small but beautiful Villa Celimontana, just a short walk uphill from the Colosseum. If you want Shakespeare in Italian there is the Silvano Toti Globe Theatre in Villa Borghese. And film fans who haven’t had the time or the inclination to see last winter’s releases can now catch some of them at outdoor screenings all over town. The one thing you will not have is good exhibitions. These do not return until the autumn and meanwhile museums have to rely on the not inconsiderable pull of their own wonderful collections. But this year the city is even making the most of its museum spaces with evening poetry readings, concerts and multi-media events. However this Estate Romana is a shadow of its former self. The former centre-left mayor, Walter Veltroni, and before him Francesco Rutelli, spared no expense on the cultural summer season. This was in part to attract tourists – although how many have ever come to Rome for its festivals as they do to Verona, Ravenna or Spoleto? – but mainly in the belief that the city should provide entertainment for those who don’t or can’t get away on holiday. This laudable tradition dates back to the time of the caesars and the popes when games in the Colosseum (so like today’s modern football stadiums in its design) and fireworks from Castel S. Angelo, the fortress of the popes, were the most extravagant and gorgeous ways of showing you had power and surplus money to burn. This summer things are different. The promised evening openings of the Colosseum were held up by lack of money to pay the staff overtime. And although Rome’s right-wing mayor, Gianni Alemanno, miraculously managed to find enough funds for the firework display at Castel S. Angelo to celebrate the June feast day of the city’s patron saints Peter and Paul, he was simultaneously declaring that the coffers were empty and that taxes and tariffs were going up. This year the summer festivals are indeed costing less, about €2.3 million compared with twice that figure four years ago. Some of the money will come from the city, some from the region and some from local companies as sponsorship. But according to the daily newspaper, Corriere della Sera, none of the money will arrive until the autumn. Meanwhile the organisers, some of them quite small, are going to have to rely on their own resources and their entrance fees to get by. According to present gloomy economic predictions the autumn may be further off than they think. For details of summer events in Rome see What's on pages 15-18 and our website www.wantedinrome.com.

CITY Fresco find in Rome catacomb

BEAT

Fiumicino airport from central Rome are not subject to a charge, nor are those using the GRA to get from one side of the city to another. The provision also applies to several other stretches of motorway and ring roads across the country that were previously free of charge. In Rome it has been met by strong protests by unions, residents, consumer associations and politicians on both sides of the political divide, who are concerned about the impact on commuters into the city, on haulage companies delivering goods to local businesses and the subsequent increases in retail prices for consumers. Under the same set of budget provisions tariffs have risen by between €0.001 and €0.003 per km on all existing toll roads across the country.

Archaeologists and restorers working in a little-known catacomb in south Rome have uncovered what they say are the oldest known paintings of the apostles Peter, Paul, Andrew and John. The four full-face icons are datable to the second half of the fourth century AD. The images, in red, yellow, pink and blue, are on the ceiling of a burial chamber belonging to an ancient Roman noblewoman in the St Tecla catacombs on Via Silvio D’Amico near the Marconi metro stop, which are owned and maintained by the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology. They came to light thanks to a special laser technology, which allowed the experts to remove the deposits of calcium carbonate that had formed on the paintings over the centuries without damaging the colours beneath. The discovery dates to summer 2009, when restorers working in the catacombs uncovered a fresco of St Paul. The team then decided to adapt existing laser technology for use in the catacombs, and the final results were announced in June. Fabrizio Bisconti, superintendent of archaeology at the catacombs, told journalists that St Peter appears in other images dating to around the same period, but never on his own as he does here, while the paintings of Andrew and John are the oldest in existence. The St Tecla catacombs were discovered by chance in the 1950s during excavations Icon of St Paul (right), one of four frescoes for building in the area and are discovered in the little-known catacombs normally closed to the public. of S. Tecla near Via Ostiense.

GRA toll causes controversy Drivers entering or leaving Rome via existing toll roads now have to pay a forfait of between €1 and €2 to cover use of the city ring road or Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA). The fee is charged at the toll stations around the city regardless of whether motorists actually use the GRA or exit to locations before it. For example a vehicle arriving from the north at the Fiano Romano toll station on the A1 RomaFirenze is charged the forfait even if subsequently exiting before the intersection with the city ring road. The measure also means that drivers have to pay to use the A91 Roma-Fiumicino, which was previously free, but only when entering or exiting via the A12 Roma-Civitavecchia motorway in the northwest. Motorists travelling to 21 July 2010

The new tolls came into effect on 1 July in time for the summer holiday season, when millions of Italians take to the roads en route to the coast or mountains.

Rare Shelley volume purchase The Keats-Shelley Memorial House in Piazza di Spagna has recently bought a rare first edition of the English Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley’s five-act play The Cenci, which was printed in only 250 copies by Glauco Masi in Livorno, between August and September 1819. Shelley arranged for the printing himself through his London publishers, Charles and James Ollier, because, as he wrote to them, “it costs, with all duties and freightage, about half of what it would cost in London.”

The volume, which is now part of the museum’s significant collection of rare books, is in an early 19th-century binding, making it all the more interesting. The book, which is in excellent condition, has a moving dedication to Shelley’s friend Leigh Hunt. Shelley was working on the first draft of The Cenci in Rome when his son William became sick and died at the age of four in June 1819. William was buried in the Protestant cemetery in Rome, where Shelley’s ashes were also buried after he drowned in a storm off the coast of Lerici near La Spezia in 1822. The Cenci was not performed in public in London until 1922 because of what were considered the unsuitable themes of incest and parricide.

Rifkin plan for Rome According to a plan drawn up by the eco-economist, Jeremy Rifkin, Rome could be well on the way to bio-sustainability in 20 years. By then the city could have reduced carbon emissions by 46 per cent and be self-sufficient in its energy and food production. And although the cost over the 20-year period would be €10 billion, the return on investment from savings on energy and infrastructure maintenance, plus the spinoffs from new technological developments, could be €16 billion. Under the Rifkin plan, commissioned by city mayor Gianni Alemanno, Rome would be divided into inter-connecting residential, commercial-industrial and agricultural zones all linked by new non-polluting public transport systems and served by revolutionary distribution grids for renewable energy. The historic city would be the centre of the hub, where new public housing would be developed to reverse the present population drain to the suburbs. These new eco-friendly residential areas would be created within existing but abandoned commercial spaces and military barracks. This central zone would also become a network of private and public micro-gardens, where schools and institutions would be encouraged to have their own areas for growing vegetables. Around this central hub would be the industrial and commercial (work) zones, with new research establishments for the development of technologies for the future of a biocont. on page 13

sustainable planet. Bicycle paths, pedestrian areas and clean public transport systems would connect them to the centre and each other. The third ring would be the agricultural zone for the city’s food supply. Here Rome is fortunate as it is the only European city of its size still surrounded by a large area of cultivated, but under-utilised, agricultural land. Ten immediate projects have been identified for development over the next two years. These include among other things a smart grid to connect nine areas (islands) of the city with energy from renewable sources, lowenergy lighting for streets and public buildings, new energy-efficient heating systems for public and private swimming pools, the completion of the electronic metering system to gauge supply throughout the city, more efficient use of the city’s reserves of wood and subsidies for new lighting systems for private residential buildings.

Rome schools summer opening Rome is keeping some of its schools open during the summer vacation to help look after 5,000 children from three to 11 years old. About 54 schools will open two to three days a week from July until mid-September, when the new academic year starts. The schools’ programme offers cultural activities such as painting, music, theatre and creative writing, as well as computing and trips to city parks and to other areas of interest in Lazio. There are also Italian language lessons for foreign children and English lessons for Italian children. The project is designed to help parents who work and are unable to make other arrangements for their children during the months of the long summer vacation. More information is available from the city council’s Dipartimento Servizi Educativi e Scolastici, direzione promozione servizi per la famiglia e la gioventù, tel. 06671070113.

Swimming in the shadow of the Colosseum This year for the second year running the traditional Roman summer festival All’Ombra del Colosseo includes a swimming pool and solarium in the Celio park overlooking the Flavian amphitheatre, renewing debate about the use of the ancient monument and its surroundings. In summer 2009 the state archaeological authorities gave permission for the installation of the panoramic pool near the so-called Ninfeo di Nerone on a one-off basis on grounds that Rome was hosting the world swimming championships at the same time. However the organiser Castellum, a local cultural association, has managed to secure its presence again this year, despite an initial

21 July 2010

refusal by Rome state archaeological superintendent Giuseppe Proietti. The U-turn is indicative of the ongoing battle between the state and city cultural authorities over the use of Rome’s archaeological heritage. In recent months there have been repeated calls to limit activities in and around the Colosseum amid concerns about damage from noise and pollution. All’Ombra del Colosseo is open daily from 09.00-02.00 and there is a live cabaret performance every evening at 21.45. The festival village is accessible from Via di S. Gregorio and runs until 4 September.

Cultural heritage up for grabs? Rome’s Etruscan museum in Villa Giulia, the Idroscalo in Ostia (where writer and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered in 1975 in circumstances that remain unclear), the engineering faculty of La Sapienza University next to the church of S. Pietro in Vincoli on the Celio and Villa Gregoriana in Tivoli are among the sites that could be transferred from the state to Rome city council or province or the Lazio region under proposals currently before parliament. The idea is to transfer ownership to city, provincial and regional administrations of cultural and natural heritage sites currently belonging to the state free of charge as a way of promoting their use and upkeep and/or generating much-needed income. Under the plans local administrations can choose the sites that interest them from a predefined list, specifying what they intend to do with them once they have been “acquired”. They can opt either to retain ownership of the sites or to sell them and retain 75 per cent of the revenue to pay off local debts, with the remaining 25 per cent returning to the state. The proposals reportedly involve over 9,000 buildings and around the same number of natural sites including beaches, mines, lakes and rivers, to a total value of €3 billion. Sites outside Rome that may be deemed “transferable” under the plans include Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo, the lighthouse on the island of Ponza, Piazza d’Armi in L’Aquila and parts of the Dolomite mountains. The list of sites is still only provisional but it has already met with strong opposition from cultural organisations and opposition parties, concerned about the impact on Italy’s natural and cultural heritage. The state property agency, the Agenzia del Demanio, is due to publish a definitive list of sites that could be transferred to local and regional administrations at the end of July.

Shoah museum plans get official showing The preliminary project for the Shoah museum in Rome has finally been presented officially in public to the city, regional and Jewish authorities. The museum, which will

commemorate Italy’s Jewish victims of the Holocaust, should have been opened on 18 October 2008, the day in 1943 when Rome’s Jews were rounded up and deported to Auschwitz. The idea for the museum was first presented in 2005 by the then mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni. The design for the Holocaust memorial, by Luca Zevi and Giorgio Tamburino, has not changed since it was completed several years ago. It is a heavy, dread-full edifice, with a part that looks like a cut-off smoke stack as an ever-present reminder of the gas chambers. Attached to this is a huge black cube, which will house exhibition spaces, the library, conference rooms and offices. The names of all the Italian Holocaust victims will be inscribed along the outside walls of this black block. The museum is to be built in the grounds of Villa Torlonia off Via Nomentana (with the entrance in Via Alessandro Torlonia). The neo-classical house, which was the residence of Mussolini when he was in power, and the surrounding park have recently been restored and turned into a museum centre. The grounds are also the site of important ancient Jewish catacombs – hence the choice of location – and there will be a walkway from the museum to the ancient burial grounds. It is estimated that the museum, which will cost about €13.5 million, could be completed in three years.

Fiumicino gets fast transit luggage system Fiumicino has opened a new automated system for processing transit passengers’ luggage, previously managed by hand. The new system, called NET 6,000 (Nuovo edificio transiti), can handle 6,000 pieces of luggage an hour, and is situated between the national and the international terminals. It is 1,200 m long and services 42 outlets. Luggage is taken from the arriving aircraft into the transit centre and then guided out again to the departing aircraft via a system of carriers with electronic readers that pick up the bar code on the luggage label. According to Aeroporti di Roma, which manages both Leonardo Da Vinci international airport (Fiumicino) and Ciampino, Fiumicino is now the sixth busiest airport in Europe and the first in Italy. The new transit system for baggage is the first of its kind in Italy. It was opened by the undersecretary to the prime minister’s office, Gianni Letta, on 8 July. The system has been built in four months at a cost of €20 million. Baggage handling at Fiumicino has always been one of the weak points of the airport, with arriving passengers sometimes waiting hours in the peak vacation period to pick up their suitcases. The new system will not improve the long wait in the arrivals hall but should manage to speed the transit, and lessen the anxiety, of passengers travelling through the airport to other destinations.

Rome Everybody Welcome, Everything Free. 10 June-31 Oct. Organised to celebrate 90 years of friendship between the Knights of Columbus and the city of Rome. This exhibition traces the history of the Catholic mutual aid society founded in 1881 by Father Michael J. McGivney. Photographs, portraits, documents and newspaper articles are on show, as well as fragments of the Allied bombs that fell on the Knights of Columbus’ playground in S. Lorenzo in 1943 and the original letter from Pope Pius XII to US President Franklin Roosevelt – carried by the Knights of Columbus’ representative in Rome – asking for the city to be spared from Allied bombing. “Everybody Welcome, Everything Free” was the motto of the Knights when they first came to Rome serving US troops stationed in Italy and throughout Europe during world war one. The initiative so impressed Pope Benedict XV that he invited the society to maintain a permanent presence in Rome. Capitoline Museums, Palazzo Nuovo, tel. 060608. 09.00-20.00. Mon closed. Gladiatores. 26 March-3 Oct. A vast exhibition of epigraphs, frescoes, mosaics, statues and other historical documents narrate the history of Roman gladiators, focusing on their art of fighting, their psychology and their social status. Colosseum. For booking and information tel. 0639967700. 08.30-19.15. 2V page 15 Jacob Hashimoto. 1 June-22 Aug. Rome’s civic contemporary art museum MACRO has inaugurated one of the spaces joining its existing premises and its new wing (not yet open to the public) with a site-specific installation by Jacob Hashimoto entitled Silence Still Governs Our Consciousness, which creates a floating realm that anticipates the journey from the museum’s present to its future. In the description of organisers, “this cloud of 7,000 kites” fills the room like a “diaphanous canopy” evoking in its spectators the sensation of being “surrounded by a mist-filled forest of kites and strings – a quiet, meditative, sculptural environment. The piece synthesizes nature and technology to yield a fluid and organic landscape. This encourages meditation and evokes new readings of the gallery: as a void, as space, or as time”. MACRO, Via Reggio Emilia 54, tel. 06671070400. 09.00-19.00. Mon closed.

Auguste-D Dominique Ingres / Ellsworth Kelly. 3V page 15 Jean-A 20 June- 26 Sept. The exhibition examines the links between the contemporary abstract American painter and the 19thcentury director of the French Academy. The exhibition, curated by the Academy’s current director Éric de Chassey, displays some of Kelly’s recent abstract works as well as his drawings of flowers and figures, together with key Ingres works from the Louvre, Montauban and Besançon museums selected by Kelly. Grandes Galeries, Villa Medici, Viale Trinità dei Monti 1, tel. 0667611, www.villamedici.it. L’Età della Conquista. Il fascino dell’arte greca a Roma. 5 March-5 Sept. The works on show have been selected to represent one of the most significant eras for the development of all western art: the period following the Greek campaigns at the end of the third century BC until the first half of the first century AD. The exhibition features imposing marble, bronze and terracotta statues including cycles and friezes as well as domestic decorative elements. Capitoline Museums, Piazza del Campidoglio, tel. 060608. 09.00-20.00. La forma del Rinascimento. Donatello, Andrea Bregno, Michelangelo e la scultura a Roma nel quattrocento. 21 May-5 Sept. This exhibition focuses on the work of the three great 15th-century sculptors during the period of stylistic renovation in the Rome of the so-called humanist popes, from Pius II to Leo X. It includes a precious high-relief by Michelangelo that has never been shown in public before. Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Venezia, Via del Plebiscito 118, tel 060608. 10.00-19.00. Mon closed. The head of Gattamelata by Donatello, on display at Palazzo Venezia in Rome.

Cortona Tuscan Sun Festival 2010. 30 July-6 Aug. The Tuscan Sun Festival in the little Tuscan town of Cortona is the original within the family of Sun Festivals produced by IMG Artists and which include a festival in California’s Napa Valley and one in Singapore. For dance, principal dancers of the American Ballet Theater, Maxim Beloserkovsky and Irina Dvorovenko, return following their successful appearance at the 2009 festival to present a ballet gala with stars of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky. In the music section there is the Russian soprano Ekaterina Scherbachenko, winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World award, together with tenor Marcello Giordani and the Orchestra della Toscana. The American soprano Reneé Fleming makes one of her rare appearances in Italy accompanied by the Orchestra del Festival Puccini led by Alberto Veronesi and with the participation of the young composer and conductor Anthony Arcaini. Violin superstar Joshua Bell returns to the festival with his long-time collaborator, cellist Steven Isserlis, and Italian actor/director Gabriele Lavia delivers an evening of monologues called Il Sogno di un Uomo Ridicolo by Dostoevsky accompanied on the cello by Cecilia Chailly. The festival is also host to an exhibition by the New York urban artist DAZE, who will create art works in a public space. As always wine tasting and local food feature as an important part of the programme. For booking and information www.tuscansunfestival.com.

Macerata Macerata Opera 2010. 29 July-10 Aug. This excellent opera season takes place in the fascinating setting provided by the “Sferisterio”, a long, oval-shaped arena that was originally built for the game of the ball and the bangle. The form of the building - made up of a playing field, several locations for a variety of uses, a sustaining wall, boxes and balconies - provides a challenging setting for stage directors who have turned it into a temple for opera with some really legendary productions. The opera programme this year includes Faust by Gounod, La Forza del Destino and I Lombardi alla Prima Crociata by Verdi, as well as Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine and Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans together with a programme of concerts and conferences. For booking and information tel. 0733230735, www.sferisterio.it. See also Opera Notes.

Martina a Franca 36th Festival della Valle d’Itria. 15 July-4 Aug. This worldclass music festival encourages the production of forgotten titles and rare works, and provides a springboard for up-and-coming musicians and singers. For information tel. 0804805100, wwwfestivaldellavalleditria.it. See also Opera.

Siena Incontri in Terra di Siena 2010. 23-31 July. This is a delightful chamber music festival organised by the cultural association of the same name founded in 1969 in memory of Antonio and Iris Origo, who dedicated their lives to the development and appreciation of the Val d’Orcia. It is based at Villa La Foce and in a nearby mediaeval castle, Castelluccio di Pienza, and spreads a love of music and art through concerts, meetings, and artistic events in the many beautiful venues of southern Tuscany. The new musical director is Kathryn Stott, a musician with valuable experience of running major festivals. The 2010 programme includes a line-up of internationally-acclaimed musicians in an eclectic series of chamber music concerts plus an incursion into the world of early music with a concert curated by Nicky Swallow. A multi-faceted orchestral programme and other events enrich the week’s events. For booking and information tel. 057869101, www.itslafoce.org.

Torre del Lago 56th Puccini Festival. 16 July-21 Aug. The operas on the programme this year are La Fanciulla del West, Tosca, Turandot and Madama Butterfly. There is also an evening of ballet with a performance of Romeo and Juliet (11 Aug). For booking and information tel. 0584359322, www.puccinifestival.it. See also Opera.

Verona 88th Opera Festival dell’Arena di Verona. 18 June-29 Aug. The operas this year are Turandot, Aida, Madama Butterfly, Carmen and Il Trovatore. The only new production is Turandot; all the others are successful stagings from past editions of the festival. For booking and information www.arena.it. See also Opera.

Viterbo Tuscia Opera Festival. 9 July-4 Sept. Festival director Stefano Vignati has brought a number of big names in the performing arts to Viterbo in the past few years. However the programme is extremely uneven, and although the festival goes under the name Tuscia Opera Festival opera actually features very marginally with lots of space for pop and jazz concerts and a variety of other events. Symphonic and chamber music are well represented and there are a couple of operas performed in concert form as well as the fully staged Suor Angelica by Puccini. See also Opera. Some names to look out for include pianist and composer Giovanni Allevi, jazz musician Stefano Bollani and dancer Raffaele Paganini. The festival spreads out across the province of Viterbo with concerts in Castiglione in Teverina, Civita di Bagnoregio, Montefiascone and Valentano. An exhibition showing 20thcentury costumes of heroines from Puccini operas is at the Sala Regia of the Palazzo dei Priori. For information tel. 0761331164, 347/8524241, www.tusciaoperafestival.com.

1 X page 15 The Globe Theatre. 8 July-19 Sept. Tucked

away in the heart of Villa Borghese is a full-scale reproduction of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, copied from the original designs, and almost identical to the one that now stands on London’s South Bank. Rome’s version of the Globe was built by the city council in 2003, and financed by the Silvano Toti foundation. The programme is overwhelmingly Shakespearean, but don’t get your hopes up too high as all productions are in Italian. This year’s fare includes The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Tempest (featuring well known actor Giorgio Albertazzi), Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. For information tel. 060608, www.globetheatreroma.com.

21 July 2010

2 X page 15 L’Anfiteatro della Quercia del Tasso. 12 July-30 Aug. The perfect stone theatre on the Janiculum overlooking the roofs and cupolas of Rome takes its name from the 16thcentury poet, Torquato Tasso, who drew inspiration from the oak tree that once stood here. Since 1965 it has become a summer “must” with a characteristic programme of Greek and Roman comedy and a few incursions into comical 18thcentury drama. Don’t expect high quality theatre but a pleasant and relaxed evening with a sure bag of laughs. This year’s calendar forsakes its Greek and Roman tradition in favour of an adaptation of Victorien Sardou’s comedy Un Diabolico Divorzio and André Roussin’s La Cicogna si Diverte. Turin Compagnie José Besprosvany. 24 July. In Inventions, choreography by José Besprosvany. This interesting company was created in 1986 by the Belgian choreographer and director whose main objective is to promote new ideas about movement, music and text. Besprosvany’s work follows two important threads: the relationship between movement and narrative; and openness to non-European cultures. Inventions focuses on the meeting between an artist who has been trained in classical and contemporary dance and three performers who portray choreographic and musical scripts, both contemporary and from the past. During the course of the evening three encounters take artists and spectators to a crossroads of theatre and dance that raises questions about the place of dance today. Billy Cowie. 21, 25 July. In The Revery Alone/Ghosts in the Machine, choreography by Billy Cowie. Cowie is a Scottish choreographer, composer and filmmaker. He works principally in the areas of dance/theatre performance, screen dance and installation. Probably best known for his live performance pieces in conjunction with Liz Aggiss for Divas Dance Theatre, he has also completed six major screen projects. His stereoscopic dance installations The Revery Alone and Ghosts in the Machine have been screened worldwide and were featured in the British Council Showcase at the Edinburgh Festival in 2009. For Festival Teatro a Corte, tel. 0115119409, www.teatroacorte.it.

Verona Momix. 2-9 Aug. In Momix Remix, choreography by Moses Pendleton. This show celebrates the 25th anniversary of one of the most popular and crowd-pleasing dance companies around. Pendleton doesn’t offer particularly inventive choreography, but Momix performances captivate the audience and the 14-member troupe, made up of muscular performers who look as much like gymnasts as dancers, take full advantage of tricks of the theatre and clever lighting. Props include poles, hula hoops, big rolling wire frames and oversized exercise balls with which the polished troupe pushes familiar limits to sometimes astonishing heights. Teatro Romano. Opera Notes The Macerata Festival, also known as the Sferisterio Opera Festival, marks the 400th anniversary of the death of the Macerata Jesuit and explorer Matteo Ricci, with works inspired by spiritual themes. The Puccini Festival near Lucca celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first performance of La Fanciulla del West. The festival counts on famous singers to attract both the ordinary public as well as passionate opera fans.
