editorial The power of relics Mary Wilsey
T Crowds admire the remains of Caravaggio in Ravenna. Photo by Paolo Genovesi.
Caravaggio’s Crucifixion of St Peter in the Cerasi chapel in the church of S. Maria del Popolo, Rome.
Churches in Rome that have six of the best Caravaggio religious paintings: S. Luigi dei Francesi, Largo Toniolo. The three St Matthew paintings. 1599-1602 S. Maria del Popolo, Piazza del Popolo. The conversion of St Paul and the Crucifixion of St Peter. 1600-1601 S. Agostino, Piazza S. Agostino. The Madonna of the Pilgrims (The Madonna of Loreto). 1603-1605
here they were, five bones lying on red silk in a glass casket. They had been escorted with great devotion from the place of his birth to the place of his death. Experts were at hand to give advice along the way to make sure that the relics were not jolted or exposed to harsh sunlight or, worse still, stolen and replaced with fakes. There were lawyers to dispense the seal of legality and dignitaries to receive the bones at the end of their journey where they would be exposed to the adoration of the public for several days. Hard battles had been fought between rival towns for the possession of these revered objects, each believing fiercely that it had a better claim to house these priceless relics. A truce had now been proclaimed, but there was always the danger that fighting might break out again at the slightest opportunity. This was the sort of first-class treatment that was reserved for a topclass saint in Christian Europe of the Middle Ages. It is one that is sometimes difficult to comprehend these days in this increasingly secular continent. Or is it? What is described above was not a common event of 1,000 years ago but the treatment given in July this year to the bones of the late 16th-century artist Michelangelo Merisi, known more commonly as Caravaggio. It was not high-ranking churchmen but ministers of culture, specialists in restoration, millionaire lawyers and city mayors who accompanied his bones from one part of Italy to another. For warring mediaeval towns substitute Bergamo, the province of Merisi’s birth, and Porto Ercole, the place where he is supposed to have been buried. Both battled for the privilege of being the final resting place of what is left of him. And for Christian pilgrims gazing at the relics of Christian saints substitute art lovers travelling to peer into the glass case holding five bits of his bones. Again, is it so difficult to understand the fervent faith of the Middle Ages? Substitute the word Christianity for the word culture; swap the reverence once shown for the building of a new cathedral with what we now show for the construction of a contemporary museum by a celebrity architect; exchange the vast numbers of pilgrims that trailed across Europe a millennium ago to revere the relics of a special saint with those who travel no less ardently today, although more comfortably and speedily, to wait no less reverentially outside the Vatican Museums to see the frescoes by Michelangelo (Buonarroti this time, not Merisi) on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The high prices that were once paid for Christian relics and the political negotiations that went on to obtain them are not so different from the high prices and prestige politics that today drive the market for all forms of culture. Battles over the rightful resting place of the Rosetta Stone from Egypt, the Elgin Marbles from Greece and the Ife sculptures from Nigeria (all in the British Museum in London) are just as fraught as the ones that were once waged over the rightful ownership of the wooden pieces of the True Cross (in the basilica of S. Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome) or the Crown of Thorns (in Notre Dame in Paris). If the relic-chasers of the Middle Ages seem a strange lot, maybe future generations will see our present craving for culture as no less strange. Who would imagine that people could wait for hours, as they did this spring, to pay to see the blockbuster exhibition of Caravaggio’s paintings at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome when they could have saved time and money by walking into Rome churches to see some of his most memorable works in the surroundings for which they were commissioned? classified columns L o o k fo r m o r e c l a s s i f i e d a d s o n w w w. w a n t e d i n r o m e . c o m MICHELA PRODAN On July 20th, Michela Prodan passed away peacefully surrounded by her friends, her housekeeper Gloria and her beloved dog, Pippo, at her side. Michela will be remembered for her love of life, her unconventional ways, her sense of humour and her generosity that often left her in serious difficulty. A friend recalls that “....her fur coat and silver candle sticks went back and forth to the pawnbroker many a time”. Michela was born in China, in 1941, of a Scottish mother and Italian father. When her family moved to Rome Michela chose Rome’s colourful Ghetto neighbourhood as her home. Michela spoke four languages fluently which lead her into a career as “Dialogue Coach” in films. She travelled the world working with famous actors and directors but remained unimpressed by “fame”. What she loved best were the cosy evenings spent with friends in her Rome flat. The people who attended Michela’s funeral service were reminded of her humanity and many faceted character. The church was filled with those important to Michela: her mother, her young nephew, Omero, her close friends and the “village friends”, from the Ghetto who had been part of her life for fifty years. Olympia, a frail woman with a limp, who feeds the neighbourhood cats, took her place in the front pew with the family, then there was Enzo, the next-door barman where Michela had her morning cappuccino, the Arab and Jewish restaurant owners, the lone artist who lives in a red van opposite Michela’s apartment and, of course, Pippo ..... Michela will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched with her love, laughter and wonder. Book Bin. Give and Take. The power of relics
Er Pigneto: where romanità meets the world
Cont. from page 3.
But perhaps the Church has realised that the bones of Christian painters may have as much pull these days as those of Christian saints. The main churches in Rome that house Caravaggio’s works were open all night on 17-18 July this year to mark the 400th anniversary of the artist’s death. But what a strange saint to embrace: a one-time street artist before he became the favourite of cardinals, an arrogant and violent brawler, a drunkard and a murderer. He died alone and discredited (probably in Porto Ercole), perhaps of lead poisoning from his paints (the latest theory), from malaria or from wounds from a drunken brawl he had before setting out from Naples to Tuscany in search of a pardon that would allow him to return to Rome. His paintings then went out of fashion until he was resurrected in the 20th century as a major artist. Michelangelo Merisi. 29 September 1571-18 July 1610. RIP. also remembered in Bar Rosi in Via del Pigneto, just across the railway bridge. Here you can sit on a Monday morning and savour the cigarettefuelled commentaries of Ranieri and Ancelotti look-alikes on the football match of the day before. “Totti ha fatto bene!/ha fatto male…”, according to whether the speaker is a supporter of the Roma or Lazio team. If you ask, the owner will also take you round the back and show you a photo of the bar’s previous incarnation – a bombed-out chrysalis. Other photos show Via Prenestina plus German tank, then in 1944 the same stretch of road plus American tank. Opposite, a photo-gallery of striking neighbourhood faces puts Andy Warhol in the shade. Come back outside and the post-match commentary goes round another circle. Here romanità – the sense of attachment felt by Romans to their city – is still alive and well, often interwoven these days with echoes of Urdu, Wolof, Mandarin, Amharic, Tagalog, Arabic and other languages. Across the railway cutting stands the Jia Yuan hotel, while neighbourhood restaurants are Ethiopian (Via Grosseto), Columbian, Brazilian, Indian (Via del Pigneto), Lebanese (Piazza dei Condottieri) and of course Italian (cf. the no-nonsense and reasonably priced trattoria Antichi Sapori in Via Macerata just off Piazzale Prenestino). Wine bars also abound – some fashionable, others distinctly not, with vini sfusi on sale for as little as €1 a bottle. For international filmgoers there is the Grauco film library/cinema where films (three a day and all undubbed) can be Danish, Russian, Mexican, Japanese: a cinematic post-Babel of opportunity. Il Pigneto’s architecture is not as grand as Piazza Navona, another great Roman venue for sitting back and watching life go by; most of the area’s streets would fit neatly into a Cornish fishing village. But if the buildings here are three or four times lower than their uptown equivalents, so are the prices. Instead of Bernini fountains there are, courtesy of the city council, workaday nasoni you can actually drink from. Then Il Pigneto, like Piazza Navona, is more or less traffic free, the main brunt of vehicles being funneled along the Circonvallazione Casilina and the two bordering roads it joins together. Back in Via Prenestina the tram, with its evergreen livery, follows where Roman legions once trod. Directly underneath are the ancient paving stones, their discovery in the 1960s halting the construction of a slip road for months while archaeologists took stock. Or so an old man told this writer at the so-called Torrione Prenestino, a ring of massive stone/truncated tower that started as a tomb dating back to the period of the emperor Augustus and is another local landmark. In renaissance times the Rufini family converted the tomb into a fortress and in 1741 Dominican Irish monks used the premises for a banquet to Prince Charles Edward Stuart, better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender. History paid another less fortunate visit in 1943, again in the form of Allied bombing and the renaissance add-ons were destroyed. Two more stops and the tram rattles on toward Largo Preneste. With its standard-size apartment blocks, Rome’s periferia takes over again, along with its equally standard noise and neon. Another sway: the last glimpse of Er Pigneto is an arch of pine trees vanishing in the rear-view mirror. For more information about the area see the website www.pigneto.it.

Milan/Turin MITO. 3-24 Sept. Organisers of this sophisticated music festival believe that it is culture that opens the door to curiosity and creativity as well as to the cultural development and integration of the two cities – Milan and Turin – involved in the project. The first move in this direction came three years ago when MITO developed out of SettembreMusica. An integrated programme of contemporary art followed last autumn and there are two other important opportunities ahead with next year’s celebrations for Italia 150 and Expo 2015 in five years’ time. MITO is geared to younger audiences and this year the focus is on the environment and sustainability, with symphonic music, contemporary music, a selection of world music and a special spotlight on Chopin and Schumann. There is also space for jazz and rock and an array of side events. Tickets are already on sale and are going like hotcakes, so if you are interested book now. For booking and information tel. 0288464725, 0114424703, www.mitosettembremusica.it.

Macerata Opera 2010. 29 July-10 Aug. This excellent opera season takes place in the fascinating setting provided by the Sferisterio, a long oval-shaped arena that was originally built for the game of the ball and the bangle and which now provides a challenging setting for stage directors who have turned it into a temple for opera with some really legendary productions. The opera programme this year includes Faust by Gounod, La Forza del Destino and I Lombardi alla Prima Crociata by Verdi, as well as Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine and Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans together with a programme of concerts and conferences. For booking and information tel. 0733230735, www.sferisterio.it.
Taormina Taormina Arte 2010. Until 23 Sept. The beautiful Greek theatre built in the third century BC on the top of a hill overlooking the Mediterranean comes to life with a programme of theatre, dance, cinema and music. The calendar is mixed and somewhat uneven with the music and dance sections under the direction of Enrico Castiglione, who presents a production of Puccini’s Turandot directed by himself and the Royal Ballet and then the Russian Ballet in Swan Lake, Spartacus and Giselle, as well as flamenco and tango performances. The drama season, under the direction of Simona Celi, features popular actor-comedian Gigi Proietti, quickchange artist Arturo Brachetti and the Taormina International Prize for Theatre. Viterbo Tuscia Opera Festival. 9 July-4 Sept. Festival director Stefano Vignati has brought a number of big names in the performing arts to Viterbo in the past few years. However the programme is extremely uneven, and although the festival goes under the name Tuscia Opera Festival opera actually features very marginally with lots of space for pop and jazz concerts and a variety of other events. The festival spreads out into the province with concerts in Castiglione in Teverina, Civita di Bagnoregio, Montefiascone and Valentano. An exhibition showing 20th-century costumes of heroines from Puccini operas is at the Sala Regia of the Palazzo dei Priori. For information tel. 0761331164, 347/8524241, www.tusciaoperafestival.com.

This year the annual opera festival in Pesaro dedicated to little-known works by Rossini presents Sigismondo, Demetrio e Polibio and La Cenerentola, while the Festival Pergolesi Spontini in Jesi, which is celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Pergolesi, returns in a reduced format due to last-minute budget cuts. Sankai Juku from Japan dances at the Festival Oriente Occidente in Rovereto.
Rovereto Festival Oriente Occidente. 1-12 Sept. This contemporary dance festival was founded in 1981 not only as a research centre for eastern and western culture but also as a meeting place for different dance genres and languages. It has become one of the most important European festivals of contemporary dance, hosting artists and companies from all over the world. The Argentinian Compania de Leonardo Cuello opens this year’s programme, followed by the American Ririe Woodbury Dance Company, Sankai Juku from Japan, the Franco-Algerian company La Baraka, Jant-Bi from Senegal and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s company Rosas from Belgium. As always, master classes and lectures for professional and amateur dancers are included in the programme. For booking and information tel. 0464431660, www.orienteoccidente.it.
Verona Momix. 2-9 Aug. In Momix Remix, choreography by Moses Pendleton. This show celebrates the 25th anniversary of one of the most popular and crowd-pleasing dance companies around. Pendleton doesn’t offer particularly inventive choreography, but Momix performances captivate the audience and the 14-member troupe takes full advantage of tricks of the theatre and clever lighting. Aug. The perfect stone theatre on the Janiculum overlooking the roofs and cupolas of Rome takes its name from the 16thcentury poet, Torquato Tasso, who drew inspiration from the oak tree that once stood here. Since 1965 it has been a summer “must” with a characteristic programme of Greek and Roman comedy and a few incursions into comical 18th-century drama. Don’t expect high quality theatre but a pleasant and relaxed evening with a sure bag of laughs. This year it presents an adaptation of Victorien Sardou’s comedy Un Diabolico Divorzio and André Roussin’s La Cicogna Si Diverte. For booking and information tel. 065750827, 348/8240450, www.anfiteatroquerciadeltasso.com. 2 X page 15 The Globe Theatre. 8 July-19 Sept. Tucked
away in the heart of Villa Borghese is a full-scale reproduction of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, copied from the original designs, and almost identical to the one that now stands on London’s South Bank. Rome’s version of the Globe was built by the city council in 2003, and financed by the Silvano Toti foundation. The programme is overwhelmingly Shakespearean, but all productions are in Italian. This year’s fare includes The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Tempest (featuring well known actor Giorgio Albertazzi), Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. For information tel. 060608, www.globetheatreroma.com. Roma in Scena. 24 June-17 Sept. This initiative organised by the city sees a varied programme of drama, music, dance and readings in museums and public spaces throughout the summer. Many of the performances have been selected from a public competition endorsed by Rome’s civic museums. For information tel. 060608, www.museiincomune.it.

POLITICS
Summer politics watch Laura Clarke
T
he summer is typically a period of increased conflict in Italian politics as the need or desire to finalise legislation before the August recess can result in a series of provisions that are pushed through parliament without due scrutiny or debate. This year is no exception. The summer is also a time when it is more difficult than usual to follow what is going on. The end of most television political talk shows in mid-June heralds the start of a sort of information “blackout”: TV news broadcasts privilege infotainment – usually around a summer theme – over hard news and newspapers adopt a reduced format as reporters and columnists go on holiday. So many Italians could return from their vacations to find the political landscape considerably changed. Here is a brief roundup of the main events in recent politics as well as a guide to what to look out for in August and beyond.
Scandal. Members of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s government and entourage continue to be at the centre of public scandal in areas ranging from finance to public works and personal favours. In mid-July the ex-priest and former Fininvest manager Aldo Brancher was forced to resign as minister without portfolio for the implementation of federalism after just 17 days in office to face charges of embezzlement and receipt of stolen property in relation to a failed bank takeover in 2005. He had used his new position to invoke the legitimate impediment law in force since April 2010 (see Immunity bill below) allowing cabinet ministers to refuse to attend trial on grounds of urgent government business. Soon after it emerged that one of the national coordinators of Berlusconi’s Popolo della Libertà (PdL), Denis Verdini, was under investigation for alleged “secret association” in connection with contracts for wind farms in Sardinia. Magistrates are also investigating several other high-profile personalities on the centre-right for suspected participation in a secret society being referred to as P3 in reference to the P2 (Propaganda Due) pseudo-Masonic lodge that operated illegally in Italy in the late 1970s and early 1980s and counted many prominent establishment figures among its members. Meanwhile the prime minister still occupied the post of economic development minister ad interim following the resignation of Claudio Scajola in connection with an investigation into alleged corruption in the civil protection department. The ministerial portfolio includes responsibility for industry, international trade and telecommunications – all areas of direct interest to the prime minister and his business empire. Austerity package. In May the government announced an austerity package worth €24 billion for 2011-2012 to bring Italy’s budget deficit and national debt back within the limits set for the eurozone. The so-called manoeuvre has been the subject of much debate and has led to tension between Berlusconi and the economy minister Giulio Tremonti. Eventually the two agreed a series of changes to the original proposal to put to both houses of parliament for a vote of confidence. The bill contains a series of unpopular measures including funding cuts to regional and local government, salary freezes for public sector workers and an increase of the retirement age from 60 to 65 for women employed in the public sector as from 2012. There are also cuts to ministerial budgets and perks such as official cars, as well as new simplified measures for starting up a business. Wiretapping. Nicknamed the Legge-bavaglio, or “Gag law”, this bill has been in the making since the Berlusconi government took office in 2008, but it received new impetus following the announcement of investigations into alleged corruption over the handling of contracts for the 2009 G8 summit in Italy and other so-called “Big Events” including the 2009 World Swimming Championships in Rome. The proposed law introduces new restrictions on the conduct and reporting of crimi4 August 2010
Italians protest in Piazza Navona on 1 July against plans to restrict the conduct and reporting of criminal investigations.
nal investigations, including strict limits on the use and publication of wiretaps. Supporters say the measures are needed to protect suspects’ privacy before they are formally charged but opponents argue that, due to the sluggish nature of Italian justice, under the new law many important political scandals, as well as cases of organised crime, may never come to light. Currently journalists are allowed to publish the details of an inquiry once suspects have received notification of the investigation against them, which often happens well before an indictment is made. Journalists are protesting against the new provisions, which have also been criticised by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the United States justice department, the United Nations and the international media. The bill was approved by the senate with a vote of confidence in June and then went to the chamber of deputies for debate. The speaker of the house, Gianfranco Fini, has expressed his reservations about the provisions, recognising the need to protect both the privacy of suspects and the freedom of information and the media. The bill will almost certainly be modified in the lower house and will therefore have to return to the senate for new approval, probably after the summer recess in September. Immunity bill. Another proposal currently before parliament is the constitutional law granting immunity from prosecution to the holders of the four highest offices of state: the president of the republic, the speakers of the two houses of parliament and the prime minister. It would replace the so-called Lodo Alfano law approved by parliament in 2008 but overturned by the constitutional court in 2009 on grounds that it had been passed as an ordinary rather than as a constitutional law. The new provision is needed to replace the legitimate impediment law allowing cabinet ministers to refuse to attend trial because of urgent government business, which expires at the end of 2011. Tension in the government coalition. The possibility of a definitive split with Fini, co-founder of the PdL, has prompted Berlusconi to seek alternative support from the centre-right politician Pier Ferdinando Casini, who is currently in opposition. However the prime minister’s coalition partner Umberto Bossi, leader of the right-wing Lega Nord, is unhappy about the possible allegiance and is threatening elections in the event of a government crisis. The real problems facing the country – the fact that families are saving on food expenditure to make ends meet, the renewed build-up of rubbish in Naples and Palermo or the ongoing difficulties experienced by earthquake victims in Abruzzo, highlighted in a demonstration in Rome in early July that was brutally repressed by police – continue to be largely ignored.
