HISTORY

Italy’s Lawrence of Arabia: Amedeo Guillet

The last salute at Amedeo Guillet’s funeral in June this year in Capua, where he spent much of his youth and where his wife is buried.

Geoffrey Watson

A

t daybreak on 21 January 1941, only the sentries and the cooks were awake in the British camp outside Keru. Bouyed by their success against Rommel in the Western Desert, the 4th and 5th Infantry Divisions were pressing south into Italian East Africa – today’s Ethiopia and Eritrea. Suddenly the sentries, hardly able to believe their eyes, screamed “Tank alert!” as a horde of horsemen in native dress broke into the camp brandishing swords, hand grenades and molotov cocktails, their leader shouting the Italian battle cry “Savoia!” The intruders slashed their way through the 4/11th Sikhs, and then galloped straight towards British brigade headquarters and the tanks and 25-pound artillery of the Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry. As the Amedeo Guillet, British trained their howitzers down to zero elevation and decimated the who died aged horsemen, they also wreaked havoc on their own colleagues with 101 in June “friendly fire” while the surviving horsemen disappeared into the this year, was one desert. The British army had just of Italy’s great suffered its last ever cavalry attack, almost the last in the history of 20th-century modern warfare. A few weeks ago, while Rome military heroes. was struggling with the onset of summer heat, titillated by tales of “escorts” and obsessed with the fallout from the G8 summit in L’Aquila in 2009, the leader of the attack, one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of Italy, passed away quietly and almost unnoticed aged 101. Known as Comandante Diavolo, Amedeo Guillet had led the charge on his favourite white horse Sandor. Guillet was a colourful and adventurous cavalryman, and has been dubbed “the Italian Lawrence of Arabia”. He was born in Piacenza on 7 February 1909 to a Savoyard-Piedmontese family of the minor aristocracy which for generations had served the dukes of Savoy, who later became the kings of Italy. He spent most of his childhood in the south – he remembered the Austrian biplane bombing of Bari during world war one – then followed family tradition and joined the army. After graduating from the cavalry academy in Modena in 1930, he was considered a potential gold-medallist at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. 15 September 2010

But Italy was intent on creating an empire in Africa; he volunteered to take part in the occupation of Libya, and then commanded a Moroccan unit in the Spanish Civil War, where he was awarded the silver medal for gallantry. He served there as aide de camp to General Luigi Frusci in the Black Flames division, which was sent to support Franco. But he was a witness to atrocities on both sides, and deplored what he had seen of Italy’s German allies during the posting. On his return to Italy, he was so distressed by the anti-semitic and pro-nazi policies of the Mussolini government that he requested a transfer to Ethiopia, where the wellrespected Duke of Aosta – a family friend – was serving as viceroy. Here he was tasked with forming a fighting group of Eritreans known as the Bando Gruppo Guillet. Although only a lieutenant, he was virtually in command of a brigade. Dressed in native clothes, he and his horsemen waged an apparently hopeless war against the invading British forces, and yet despite huge losses they were successfully able to hamper the enemy advance and save thousands of lives. The British finally broke through, defeating the Italian forces at Keren. Most of the Italian army had no option but to surrender, but Guillet – ever true to his oath to the king – refused to do so, and went to ground. Cut off from the Italian lines, Guillet was forced to go into hiding and wage guerrilla warfare for nine more months against the invaders. His relations with the local populace were so good that he had no fear of being betrayed. In his biography (Amedeo by Sebastian O’Kelly), Guillet tells how he fell in love with Khadija – a beautiful Ethiopian Muslim, daughter of a local chieftain. She elected to ride with him, and together they held up the British lorries heaving up the mountain road to Asmara and blew up the important Aosta bridge. Despite being hounded by British intelligence officers, and with a price of 1,000 pounds in gold on his head, dead or alive, Guillet went on the run disguised as Ahmed Abdallah Al Redai, a Yemeni beggar, and eventually made it to neutral Yemen. Guillet was able to sneak back to Eritrea in 1943 in disguise, and returned to Italy on a Red Cross ship, where he was reunited with his fiancée Beatrice, whom he had feared he would never see again. The couple married in April 1944 and he spent the rest of the war as an intelligence officer, befriending many of his former British enemies from East Africa. In the aftermath of world war two, Amedeo Guillet, disheartened, wanted to leave Italy for good. But the king whom he had always obeyed commanded him to stay, so he joined the foreign service. Unwilling to accept “raccomandazioni”, he insisted on taking the regular entrance exam, where he was placed fifth out of 400 applicants for 15 positions. His fluent Arabic brought him postings to Egypt, Yemen, Jordan and Morocco. He also served in India. As Italian ambassador to Morocco in 1971, he was present as a guest when a bloody palace coup interrupted the 42nd birthday party of King Hassan II, leaving 92 guests and members of the royal household dead before loyalist troops arrived to capture the rebels. He was decorated by the Vatican for his organisation of Pope Paul VI’s historic 1964 visit to the Holy Land. He described himself as the luckiest man he knew – surviving British and Ethiopian bullet wounds, Spanish grenade fragments and a sword cut to the face, as well as numerous bone fractures from riding accidents. Mario Nuzzi, the painter of flowers Margaret Stenhouse

N

ot many people have heard of Mario Nuzzi. And yet he was one of the most famous artists in 17th-century Italy. Commissions flooded into his atelier from the ruling houses of Rome, Florence and Turin. His works were sent as precious gifts to the courts of France and Spain, where they were considered marvels. He was the most celebrated and prolific botanical painter of his day and the maestro of two generations of European “fioranti”, or painters of live flowers. Nuzzi was so well known in his lifetime that the street he lived in was called after him. It still bears the name he was best known by – Mario de’ Fiori or Mario of the Flowers. Nuzzi specialised in painting flowers but he revolutionised the genre. Before he transformed compositions of living blooms into an art in itself, flowers in paintings were not simply natural phenomena of nature captured on canvas. They appeared in pictures for a purpose. They were allegorical, signifying religious sentiments, underlining the virtues of saints, subtly pointing the way to prayer and meditation. Nuzzi was born in 1603, when the great explorations of the previous century had introduced Europe to hitherto unknown species of exotic plants, and the wealthy aristocracy and merchant classes of Italy, France, Spain and the Netherlands had developed a passion for gardening. Princes and prelates vied with each other to possess rare

Rome FotoGrafia. Festival Internazionale di Roma. 23 Sept-24 Oct. The theme and title of this ninth edition of FotoGrafia is “Futurspectives; Can photography predict the future?”. Starting from the complex and controversial relationship between photography and reality, Futurspectives offers a vision into possible futures for humankind, nature and photography itself. Festival director, Marco Delogu, explains that photography is no longer only a way of bearing witness to what has been but also of imagining the future, to physically see it, prefiguring or exorcising it. This event has effectively moved the focus of Italian photography from Milan to Rome, and features top class names in the fields of photography and contemporary art. The festival is articulated in different sections including photography and contemporary art, photography and new media, photography and the publishing industry, and is displayed in galleries, museums, foreign academies, cafés and other venues all over Rome. For information www.fotografiafestival.it. NEW 1V page 15 Filippo Marignoli. Vertigo. 16 Sept-21 Nov. An ample retrospective of the Umbrian artist who died in 1995. Marignoli, a self-taught painter, began showing his work in galleries when he was 25. In 1954 he joined a Spoletan group of artists committed to renewing Italian art after world war two and became an important part of the Informel movement (a European movement akin to abstract expressionism). Critics have described him as “painting precipices with a sense of vertigo intrinsic to the long view down the canvas, without letting the viewer crash and burn. He marks the canvas with a viewpoint, a thin line that travels the length of the canvas and in so doing, gives us a rope, a map, a lifeline to guide our journey.” Museo Carlo Bilotti, Aranciera di Villa Borghese, Viale Fiorello La Guardia. 09.00-19.00. This exhibition, which inaugurates the commemorations for the anniversary of Heinrich von Kleist's death in 2011, narrates a hypothetical meeting between the two great German poets, Kleist and Goethe. Although they never met, the exhibition highlights the vivid intellectual relationship that tied the two men from the time when Geothe unsuccessfully staged Kleist's comedy, The Broken Jug, thus inciting a series of venomous writings. Romaeuropa Festival 2010. 21 Sept-2 Dec. It’s been a quarter of a century since this truly international arts festival hit the scenes in Rome, bringing a taste of cutting edge contemporary theatre, music and dance and a glimpse of the changes happening in today’s world. Romaeuropa celebrates its 25th anniversary with a programme that features 20 national and three world premieres. It includes some protagonists of previous editions such as Romeo Castellucci, José Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu, Jan Fabre. It also opens the door to such international artists as Guy Cassiers, Wajdi Mouawad and Laurie Anderson and Italians such as Massimiliano Civica, Santasangre and Muta Imago. The festival kicks off with an old friend; the Compagnie Montalvo-Hervieu in Orphée (21, 22 Sept). One of the keys to the festival's continuing success is probably the support of important cultural centres such as Rome’s Third University, the Accademia di S. Cecilia, the Filarmonica, the Galleria Nazionale d’ Arte Moderna as well as the city and the region. There is also a series of mini monothematic cycles dedicated to electronic music and the visual arts. Events take place in venues all over the city. This year’s greatest attraction is represented by the excellent Nederlands Dans Theater 2 with its careful mix of contemporary experimentation and balletic virtuosity (29 Sept). Coming up is the prestigious Ballet Preljocaj which brings its new Empty Moves to Italy for the first time (8 Oct). Then a ballet gala featuring the etoile Eleonora Abbagnato in an evening dedicated to 20th century repertoire (22, 23 Oct). The young Israeli choreographer, Emanuel Gat, wraps up the festival with his Winter Variations (13 Nov). Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 3. This brief but intense Italo-French festival dedicated to jazz and improvised music takes place this year at the Auditorium Parco della Musica and the Casa del Jazz, Viale di Porta Ardeatina. Among the artists who have given their support and agreed to attend are Graham Langley, Pam Bishop and Martin Manasse from England, David Ambrose and Michael Harvey from Wales, Heidi Dahlsveen from Norway, Pam Faro from Portugal, Dale Jarvis and Mariella Bertelli from Canada as well as Paola Balbi, Davide Bardi, Angela Sajeva and Sonia Cossetini from Italy. Shows will be performed in English (as the international language) and in Italian. A wide range of events will take place during the three days of the festival: Storytelling performances for adults and children, Open Floors (where everyone is welcome to tell a story), Sightseeing Storytelling and ethnic music. The festival is a multicultural gathering open to all who wish to share their culture, language and stories. Events take place in the Appia Antica regional park. Milan/Turin MITO. 3-24 Sept. Organisers of this sophisticated music festival believe that it is culture that opens the door to curiosity and creativity as well as the cultural development and integration of the two cities – Milan and Turin – involved in the project. The first move in this direction came three years ago when MITO developed out of SettembreMusica. An integrated programme of contemporary art followed last autumn and there are two other important opportunities ahead with next year’s celebrations for Italia 150 and Expo 2015 in five years’ time. MITO is geared to younger audiences and this year the focus is on the environment and sustainability, with symphonic music, contemporary music, a selection of world music and a special spotlight on Chopin and Schumann. There is also space for jazz and rock and an array of side events. For booking and information tel. 0288464725, 0114424703, www.mitosettembremusica.it.

Parma Festival Verdi. 1-28 Oct. This internationally renowned opera festival celebrating the composer in his native Parma coincides with the month of his birth. This year the programme consists of the opera productions of Il Trovatore, I Vespri Siciliani and Attila as well as symphonic concerts and a special tribute to the Trio di Parma that celebrates 20 years of activity. Names to look out for include those of Marcelo Alvarez, Leo Nucci, Daniela Dessì, Fabio Armiliato and Susanna Branchini as well as conductors Yuri Temirkanov and the young star of the podium Andrea Battistoni. including concerts, installations, audio-visual performances, choral music as well as workshops, seminars, meetings throughout the entire ten-day programme. The tittle this year is Don Giovanni e l’Uom di Sasso, and the director is Luca Francesconi. In line with the commitment of the Venice Biennale to the younger generations, this festival is a stage for prestigious groups but also for young ensembles and composers. Don Giovanni a Venezia, which opens the festival, is a totally new opera-installation conceived by Luca Francesconi and consists of a number of events in courtyards, loggias and the indoor spaces of ancient Venetian buildings. Along with this experimental opera, which challenges our habits of per-

ception, the programme includes other episodes to stimulate the public’s enjoyment of music in different ways. Tributes to composer Bruno Maderna and Franco Donatoni run through the entire festival, whilst Wolfgang Rihm has been chosen to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, for his music that is “always rooted in the material of sound, in rhythmic and harmonic power, with a lucid formal organisation.” In its collaboration with orchestras and ensembles as well as prestigious musical and cultural institutions in the region of Veneto, the biennale cultivates local resources in order to promote them to international standing. P opera Opera Notes

Poliuto, at the Bergamo Music Festival, is one of Donizetti's most beautiful and controversial serious operas but it o ett Juliette, which opens at Salerno opera house after its summer was never performed during his life time. Roméo break, is one of Gounod’s mature operas with the libretto by Jules Barbier e Michel Carré. I Demoni. 2, 3 Oct. Adapted, directed by Peter Stein from Dostoyevsky, with Peter Stein and 25 other actors. Rome hosts The Demons, a 12-hour Italian-language extravaganza after its May 2009 debut at Stein’s own country house in Umbria and an extensive international tour. The New York Times touted The Demons as the theatre event of the year when it was staged in a warehouse on Govenors Island in upper New York and included breaks for lunch and dinner. Stein’s adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s epic novel The Demons, also known as The Possessed explores the Russian writer’s prophetic vision in the tumultuous years leading up to the revolution. The sedate liberalism of the fathers is kindled into fire by the radically anarchist sons, while the demons of the title, in Stein’s own words, “represent nothing but the diseases and madnesses of a young generation that had lost its faith in religion, and had become a victim of ideology.” Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin, tel. 0680241281, www.auditorium.com. Midsummer Night’s Dream. 8-19 Sept. Directed by Riccardo Cavallo, translated by Simonetta Traversetti. Tucked away among the trees in the heart of Villa Borghese is a full-scale reproduction of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, copied from the original designs, and almost identical to the one on London’s South Bank. Built in oak, designed in a circular shape with a stage that juts out into the middle of the audience and an open roof, it offers an almost exclusively summer season. This year’s programme was entirely dedicated to Shakespeare, but all productions were staged in Italian, including Midsummer Night's Dream, which wraps up the season. In Artifact suite, Herman Schmerman, In the Middle Somewhat Elevated, choreographed by William Forsythe. Forsythe’s choreography is unique: dancers move through ballet like fish through water as he disregards the conventional logic that governs the order and impulses of steps. Legs buckle, bottoms push back, arms skew, classical lines are drawn and erased in the air or on the floor, in a mixture of verticality and apparent effortlessness. Rome Hervieu. 21-22 Sept. 1 Z page 15 Compagnie Montalvo-H In Orphèe, choreography by José Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu. Two old friends of Romaeuropa Festival present their very own modern vision of Orpheus in an exuberant display mixing song, dance, acrobatics, video projections, overlapping continents and centuries to form a harmonious mix of Monteverdi’s baroque music with African dance and sounds. Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of this Orphèe resides in its astute way of introducing and mixing African sounds and ballet with western dance forms and classical musical. This is illustrated in a scene where an African artist, Merlin Nyakam sings a lullaby from his native Cameroon accompanied by a theorbo, a 16th century string instrument from Italy. Zimmermann & De Perrot. 28-29 Sept. In Chouf Ouchouf, choreography by Martin Zimmermann. For Romaeuropa Festival. The Swiss have developed a sensual language that combines music, dance and circus. The simple set design is in constant motion, like a live player for the daring acrobats. Light, music and body colour the space and create the mood which is immediately replaced by absurd, comical scenes. Chouf Ouchouf is Arabic for “see and see again.” Set in a colourful Moroccon marketplace, the performance highlights our relations with the unknown and entices us to look at ourselves and each other. Having created a unique and very personal style in the course of the years, the work of the celebrated Czech choreographer, Jiri Kylian defies academic categorisation, blending elements from many sources. There are always new inspirations to be explored, new challenges and boundaries to be overcome. There is something in his work that penetrates deep into the mystery of the human being, and this never fails to excite, move and reach out to even the most unprepared of audiences. For 20 years Kylian's artistic vision has blended with that of the Nederlands Dans Theater, which is divided into a main group (NDT 1), a young experimental company of 17-22 year-old dancers (NDT 2) and a group of mature dancers/performing artists past the age of 40 (NDT 3) – each of which has its own repertoire reflecting the specific qualities of a certain

Turin Rosas Company. 1-2 Oct. In Rosas danst Rosas, choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. The Flemish choreographer has revived what is universally considered a major work and a milestone in the evolution of contemporary dance. Rosas danst Rosas was choreographed in 1983, the year the Rosas company was founded and is both minimalist and excessive. Four women dance to the rasping and pulsating rhythms composed by Thierry De Mey. Its stage score in four parts is punctuated by gestures from everyday life, its rhythm agitated in keeping with De Keersmaker’s typical restless style. The performers work on a repertoire of basic movements, demonstrating how the emphasis on a specific gesture, such as the crossing and uncrossing of legs or brushing back hair, results in the impulse given to body movements that ultimately take on an extreme virtuosity. Described as the ultimate demonstration of the concept “less is more”, Rosas danst Rosas is a piece about tension, the contrast between rationality and emotions, the dialectics between aggressiveness and tenderness.
