or those who knew the old premises of the British Council in Palazzo del Drago on Via delle Quattro Fontane, its new home, just off Piazza di Spagna, could hardly be more of a contrast. The wide elegant staircase at Palazzo del Drago, the high painted ceilings, the large rooms and the feeling of faded elegance have all given way to the ultra-modern and infinitely more intimate surroundings in part of what was once a convent school on Via di S. Sebastianello. Here the interior decorations are in shades of yellow, orange, red and green, the structures that separate classroom from classroom are not walls but glass dividers, some of which open and shut at will to make larger or smaller rooms, depending on need. The old teaching tools of blackboards, books, CDs and DVDs have now been replaced by the latest in interactive whiteboards linked to computers. Textbooks are now called iPacks and appear on screen only. This is learning (and teaching) made fast, easy and enjoyable. There is a new buzz about the British Council after the years in the doldrums in the old location. That the organisation for the spread of British culture was coming to the end of its tenancy in Palazzo del Drago was common knowledge for a long time. But years of searching never seemed to find quite the right place, until the present premises in Via di S. Sebastianello became vacant. The large building, which still belongs to a British-founded order of Roman Catholic nuns, was once a fashionable Italian girls’ school and probably about half of the premises is still inhabited by a few remaining sisters. There could hardly be a better and more prestigious location, just off Piazza di Spagna on the quiet road up to the Pincio and well connected to public transport via the metro station just around the corner. In a sense the British are returning to their historic roots in Rome, to what was once called the English quarter, where artists and poets gathered, a stone’s throw from the rooms where the young John Keats died – now the Keats-Shelley House – and not far from another English bastion, All Saints’ Anglican Church in Via del Babuino. The link with the past has been cleverly highlighted by the decision to call many of the rooms after 19th-century British cultural figures who had strong links to Rome and Italy – Byron, Keats, Shelley, Severn, Thackeray, Turner and even Florence Nightingale, who lived for a while in rooms on the other side of the street. But there are few reminders here of the British Council’s 65 years in Italy, other than a useful little book about the history of the organisation and its attempts to influence events in the country during the turbulent 20th century. The very dullness of this volume’s graphics is in stark contrast to the new surroundings, with their bright colours, latest technology, modern furnishings and contemporary works of art from the Council’s own collection on display throughout the building. The design of the 1500-sqm premises could not have been easy. One external wall, which runs the whole length of the building, is windowless – hence the use of glass panels to divide the rooms from the corridors to bring in more light. There are at least three staircases, which wind up and up to the top floor, and on a quick visit it is easy to lose all sense of direction but for the eye-catching large numerals opposite the lift doors that designate each level. However most students probably won’t penetrate past the first floor where the language courses take place. The architects DEWG, an Italian company with British roots, decided to divide the four floors strictly by use; ground floor for reception, first floor for teaching, second and third floor for staff, administration, management and culture. Each floor has its own refreshment area with comfortable chairs and computers stations – again a change from the old building. The most spectacular area is the top terrace which, hidden away from public view, looks out and up to Trinità dei Monti. cont. page 13

HISTORY
A glimpse into a partisan past Geoffrey Watson
C
hiara asked my wife if she would like to come on a trip to Umbria to collect her mother Carla and bring her back to Rome at the end of the summer holiday. Marinella – my wife – would love to have gone, but she said, “Why don’t you go – it’ll be a pretty outing. And she might talk more to you: she’s a bit of an anglophile.” So I went and picked Chiara up from her flat near the Piramide di Cestia. It was a pleasantly cool, autumn day after the heat wave that had gripped Rome. The British Council moves to Piazza di Spagna Cont. from page 3.
The initial impression is that language courses, whether for students or future teachers of English, have become the number one priority for the British Council. However if these are a vital part of the Council income these days, the director, Christine Melia, emphasises that there always has been and still is much more to the British Council than language. It is a promoter of contemporary British culture – whether the literary, visual or the performing arts; it is an active sponsor of cross-cultural political and economic debate; it is a creator of training opportunities for promising young Italians in many political and economic fields, most recently in those of climate change. These important aspects of the British Council’s work are not as immediately evident yet as they were at Palazzo del Drago. Perhaps it was the lofty rooms there that lent themselves to large public meetings. Perhaps it is because some of the works of art at Via S. Sebastianello look cramped and haven't quite found their ideal space. Or perhaps it is just difficult to get away from the feeling at S. Sebastianello that, despite its clever new design, the building was once a school and that its very structure lends itself more to teaching and learning than to cultural impetus and debate. In its relocation the British Council has left behind a part of its distinguished history. But perhaps it was time to do so. The old building seemed to be sapping energy out of the organisation. In the new there is already an invigorating air of purpose and confidence. Here the British Council feels as though it means business once again – a 21stcentury British institution for a 21st-century global world. Mary Wilsey VISA PROCUREMENT ASSISTANCE. città moderna. 8 Oct-6 Feb 2011. A major exhibition dedicated to the work of Vincent Van Gogh is curated by one of his leading biographers Cornelia Homburg. The exhibition comprises 110 of the Dutch master’s most famous paintings and drawings, many of which are on loan from museums around the world. The paintings selected contrast the artist’s love of the lonely expanse of the countryside with the bright lights of the city. His works, which recently attracted enormous interest at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, are on display in Rome for the first time in over 20 years. Complesso del Vittoriano, Via di S. Pietro In Carcere (Piazza Venezia), tel. 06 6780664. Mon-Thurs 09.30-19.30, Fri-Sat 09.30-23.30, Sun 09.30-20.30. NEW I Pittori del Risorgimento. 6 Oct-16 Jan 2011. Starting from the complex and controversial relationship between photography and reality, Futurspectives offers a vision into possible futures for humankind, nature and photography itself. This festival has effectively moved the focus of Italian photography from Milan to Rome, and features top class names in the fields of photography and contemporary art. Galleries, museums, foreign academies, cafés and other venues all over Rome. For information www.fotografiafestival.it. Filippo Marignoli. Vertigo. 16 Sept-21 Nov. An ample retrospective of the Umbrian artist who died in 1995. Marignoli, a self-taught painter, began showing his work in galleries when he was 25. In 1954 he joined a Spoletan group of artists committed to renewing Italian art after world war two and became an important part of the Informel movement (a European movement akin to abstract expressionism). Critics have described him as “painting precipices with a sense of vertigo intrinsic to the long view down the canvas, without letting the viewer crash and burn. He marks the canvas with a viewpoint, a thin line that travels the length of the canvas and in so doing, gives us a rope, a map, a lifeline to guide our journey.” Museo Carlo Bilotti, Aranciera di Villa Borghese, Viale Fiorello La Guardia. 09.00-19.00. Peter Stein from Dostoyevsky, with Peter Stein and 25 other actors. Rome hosts The Demons, a 12-hour Italian-language extravaganza after its May 2009 debut at Stein’s own country house in Umbria and an extensive international tour. Stein’s adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s epic novel The Demons, also known as The Possessed explores the Russian writer’s prophetic vision in the tumultuous years leading up to the revolution. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin, tel. 0680241281, www.auditorium.com. 2 X page 15 Incendies. 8, 9 Oct. Written and directed by Wajidi Mouawad. For Romaeuropa Festival. This award-winning play written by Canadian playwright Wajidi Mouawad, puts a human face on the brutality of war. Mouawad refuses to say where his story is set but his family was caught up in the violence that swept Lebanon in the ‘60s and ‘70s. On stage, making their way through the dunes are twin children, Janine and Simon, who want to solve the mystery of their origins. In retracing the bitter history of their mother (enveloped
in silence until her death), other characters come into the story – witnesses or key players able to assist in the investigation. In French with Italian subtitles. Teatro Eliseo, Via Nazionale 183, tel. 064882114, 0648872222. For information tel. 064553050, www.romaeuropa.net. 3 X page 15 L’ultimo nastro di Krapp. 10, 11 Oct. Adapted from Beckett, directed by and with Bob Wilson. Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape is a monologue/ dialogue. One actor on stage carries on a conversation with his own voice recorded many years before. An old man sitting alone on his birthday gets ready to make a recording about the past year of his life, as he has done on every birthday since he was a young man. Getting ready to make the new recording, he listens to one that he made some 30 year ago, at the end of a year that was perhaps the last truly happy one in his life. Wilson has often been compared with Beckett, both being masters of stark simplicity. Nothing is superfluous: not a word, not a movement. During the hour of this work, Beckett and Wilson paint a particular yet universal vision of the world. In English with Italian subtitles. choreography by Aurélien Bory. For Romaeuropa Festival. The principal player in this original work is an enormous robot which, one presumes, initially functioned in the assembly line of a car manufacturing facility. Removed from that context and placed on a platform in a theatre with two men in black suits, the robot is without the objects it was created to manipulate (massive sheets of heavy metal for example). Detached in this way from its intended function, it could seem that it is without purpose although, according to Bory, it is not without personality. Initially the lighting illuminates (and creates the illusion of) an immense shining sculpture, before playing in every way possible with this moving form to reveal its beauty and grace. Its stage score in four parts is punctuated by gestures from everyday life, its rhythm agitated in keeping with De Keersmaker’s typical restless style. P opera Roberto Devereux, the third of Donizetti's cycle dedicate to The Tudors, opens as Rome's Teatro dell' Opera, but the real event for opera lovers is Robert Carsen’s production of Salome by Richard Strauss in Florence. Paolo Di Nicola

TRIPS OUT OF TOWN
Castellabate: a land steeped in legend This village in southern Italy has a timeless quality that is now becoming popular with tourists from northern Europe
Andy Devane
U
pon arriving in S. Maria di Castellabate, first impressions might suggest that the inhabitants of this charming fishing village are addicted to ice-cream. Villagers of all ages stroll up and down the main thoroughfare, Corso Matarazzo, many with one arm draped around their nearest and dearest, while seemingly everyone holds an ice-cream in their free hand. Whether it’s the euphoric after-effects of the ice cream or the relaxed pace of life, the residents seem more than content with their lot. Located in the Campania region of southern Italy, Castellabate sits snugly on the edge of the Tyrrhenian Sea along the Cilento coastline. The nearest city is Salerno, 60 km away, while Agropoli is a distance of 12 km. Although the latter is relatively close, the relentlessly winding mountain roads makes it seem much further. Indeed it is these last 12 km which can provide an uncomfortable, if picturesque, introduction to S. Maria di Castellabate. The establishment of the village can be traced back to S. Costabile Gentilcore, the fourth abbot of Cava de’ Tirreni, who in 1123 built a castle here, 278 m above sea level. The origin of the area’s name also rests with S. Costabile who merged the Latin for castle (castrum) with abbot (abbatis) which eventually became Castellabate. Revered first as a hero and then as a saint, legend has it that Costabile saved the village from pirates who had already stormed neighbouring Pozzillo and whose attack was imminent. The saint’s form of protecting his people, however, veered more towards the devilish than the divine: he gathered a herd of goats, attached two lit torches to each animal’s horns and charged them at speed down the hills to the shore. Once this disturbing apparition was witnessed by the marauding Saracens, they instantly fled, believing the goats to be villagers defending their territory. Further myths abound. Some scholars suggest that an island to which Homer refers in The Odyssey is the local island Licosa: Ulysses heard that on this mysterious isle lived the siren Leucosia, who lured sailors to their death with her enchanting singing. Ulysses ordered his crew to plug their ears and tie him to the ship’s mast until they sailed safely past. On realising her failure to bewitch Ulysses, Leucosia drowned herself. Over the centuries, ownership of the castle of Castellabate and its surrounding lands changed hands many times, generally among the region’s nobility. In the 16th-century the estate passed to the Granito family. When Angelo Granito, marquess of Castellabate married Francesca di Paola Pignatelli, Princess of Belmonte, the Granito family assumed the Pignatelli Belmonte titles. Now a luxury hotel, Palazzo Belmonte is owned by Angelo Granito Pignatelli, the 13th Prince of Belmonte. Characterised by cobbled lanes, crumbling cottages and window pots overflowing with geraniums, not all of the village could be described as postcard material. An attitude of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” prevails, but herein lies its charm. This place is lived-in and loved. Here people not only know each other on a first name basis, they know each other’s preceding two generations of family, and the streets are thick with jovial, flirtatious banter, often between the most senior residents. Using battered ropes and hooks, bags of water melons are hoist29 September 2010

On the hottest summer days, shirts and shoes are not a requirement in the town centre, and expect to be hit with a football as children race up and down with sandy feet, apparently not noticing they are no longer on the beach. In nearby Lago is the Cava dei Rocchi, the quarry from which the vast columns used in the colonnade of the temples of Paestum were allegedly cut by the ancient Greeks. Their cylindrical scars are still visible. In Castellabate too, history is refreshingly close at hand: in 1990 the cargo of a submerged shipwreck from the first century BC was discovered 40 m off the coast, the contents of which are on display in the Museum of the Sea in Villa Matarazzo. The area’s waters are noteworthy for their cleanliness and have been awarded a blue flag rating every year since 2003. This has coincided with a slow but steady rise in tourism over the last decade, with visitor after visitor claiming to have “discovered” the village. In the past, the tourist trade was almost exclusively regional but thanks to local travel agencies collaborating with their foreign counterparts, the amount of visitors from overseas has dramatically increased. Alessandra Florio from La Pergola Hotel credits the rise in numbers, and the longer holiday season this creates, to wedding planners based in Norway, Britain and Ireland, who organise up to 300 weddings a year in the village. On summer evenings, the palm-lined promenade exudes a balmy romance. In the early morning, like an advent calendar the village’s shutters creak open one by one, and by noon the hum of conversation reaches a crescendo. Come lunchtime however, the streets quickly empty. What was previously a carnival of laughter becomes a ghost town devoid of noise, as if plunged into silence by a power cut. In Piazza Matarazzo, those foolish enough to be caught outside in the midday summer sun remain stuck in time, turned to pillars of salt wherever they found themselves when the church bells struck siesta time. People slump on seats, against walls, under trees, all stoically willing this unwritten curfew to end. Some hours later, at an always imprecise time, the electricity is suddenly plugged back in, the figures come to life and the high volume carnival once more resumes. And maybe, just maybe, it’s time for another ice cream. How to get there: Driving from Rome (320 km): Caserta to Salerno, then take the A3 Salerno – Reggio Calabria, exiting at either Battipaglia or Eboli for the statale 18 in the direction of Paestum, Agropoli Sud, arriving at S. Maria di Castellabate. Train from Naples central train station to Agropoli, then local bus or taxi to S. Maria di Castellabate. Useful numbers: S.
